PS3 yellow'd from update today.
:bomb:
Apparently, you can transfer them console to console through a network cable and/or upload them to PS+. Other than that, you're borked.

I just used the hairdryer for 15 minutes and am hoping I can at least get the game out and deactivate the console. If I get REALLY lucky, maybe I'll be able to back up some of the saves.

edit: Welp, hairdryer didn't work so off to sony it goes...along with all my saves...:bomb:
Hey I feel your pain, I lost a 55 hour Trinty Souls save that I was pissed about. And I had a game in each time the system died...the reflow worked and got my first game out (you might want to invest some money to try this, mine lasted an extra 9 days before it died again, up to you), then luckily the second time the system fired up for 10 seconds allowing me to get the second disc out of the system, but yeah I understand where you're coming from.

My biggest issue right now is getting all of my data back, I have almost 5 years and 40GB of data to recover even with a fast internet connection (had access to my nephews internet yesterday), it is still taking forever to get back.

Yeah I'm going to get into the habit of backing up all of my saves I've created or updated each month so unless it's copyright protected (which is a fucking stupid practice btw) I'll have access to it.

Sorry to hear about your issue, I know it's little in the way of consolation to you, but know you're not the only one its happened too.
mine just died too a day after the update, for the 2nd time.
its a 60gb ps3 with 500gb swap..
im gona buy the 320gb bundle since its bound to die again.
I updated my nephews launch 60GB yesterday with no issues either, so it's not the update, just bad luck with the systems all frying short of their 5th birthdays.

Yeah...there wouldn't be a reflow trick if it wasn't common...kinda fucked up if you ask me. Now I know to back up after every week though. I can't stomach paying for PS+ after this. If only I had a PS3 with 3.55 fw...heh...I kid I kid.

I lost Bayonetta(good thing I only beat it once), 150 hour Demon's Souls(not too broken up about it since I can dupe), GT5(really pissed about this one), Resistance 3(somewhat pissed about this one), and Killzone 3(meh), and 200 hour Resonance of Fate. I'm so glad that I upgraded my hdd last year or else I would've lost all my PS2 saves too since I had to back stuff up. I better get credited one download slot for my PSN purchases though.

I considered doing a more "proper" reflow, but I'd rather just get it replaced one last time. Chances are that the next time it breaks, I won't really have the time to do as much gaming anyways. Sure will miss my fatty though.

Pretty much. If we had stronger consumer protection laws over here, we wouldn't have this problem, or at least it wouldn't cost us a new PS3 just to get our units fixed.

ive lost at least 2 diff demons souls saves the last due to a corrupted backup. the could save system for plus is awesome for those saves that are protected since you can upload them to it and put your regular saves on something else.

they really should have allowed for easy swapping harddrives into new ps3s because if you dont do regular backups or have cloud youre sol as soon as your ps3 dies.

No kidding. Even the 360 does that.

I hope to cthulhu that they can fix my fatty.

I don't think you'll get your PS3 back. When I sent mine in for repair they just sent a refurbished unit out the day after receiving mine at their facility. Of course, when I got it and put my HDD in the system I had to do an install, which erased everything.

Yeah, usually Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo will send you a refurb instead of fixing your unit. The process is faster and easier for them.

I don't disagree that I'll get a different unit this time. It's just that the last time I sent it for a borked BR drive, they replaced the drive and I got my unit back. I know that YLOD is harder to fix than a BR drive, so I'm still hoping against hope...heh.

After my PS3 died, I do a complete back-up once a month, and in between those periods, I copy the save of the game I'm currently playing to a thumb drive after every play session.
Reflowing with an oven works. I've done it on a few Laptops and video cards even.

It's same idea but tends to work better / last longer.

I've bought a few YLOD PS3's off craigslist and ebay baked them tested for a week or so and resold them as refurbs for decent profits.
If it really works I might try it with my 60gb. Would be nice to get some of those saves off it

Update: took it to a friends house and did heat gun trick. It worked! I turned the playstation on and deactivated my psn account. I have no idea if it worked as I was still able to play my downloadable games. Im hoping it worked. Anyone know if its possible to transfer save files if I buy a new ps3? Been looking online and I can't seem to find answers.

Connect two units together with a network cable to use the transfer feature or upload everything to PS+. Those are your only options.

Thanks! Ill look into that. I didn't know there was a function that did that. Hopefully keeping my ps3 off until I try that will keep it working.
Thank you.

I bought mine Aug. '07. This is why I rarely play my PS3 since I have moved to AZ and I never fire it up in the summer. When I lived in northern UT it was cheap to have the air conditioner cool the apartment down in summer and fall and in winter and spring I would open the window and the snow-crisp air would keep my PS3 from sounding like a jet engine.

Honestly, I don't use my PS3 much because I don't have time and I don't like the heat it generates. But the above reason does keep me from firing it up in the rare event I do have time. I have also never used it flat (always vertical) and I have never had it in a shelf under the TV (always up on an end table with ventilation around it). I'm hoping all of this will help me earn better longevity. I don't want to lose BC (much less needlessly spend extra money on something because Sony is too stupid to build anything right). But it sounds like I better update the thermal paste and clean the dust out once I move back to cooler climates and decide to start using it more regularly.

That is everything I ever did. I always used mine.
Another way to think about it is if you never use your machine it is just as much of a paper weight as a dead one.
