Reports of some peoples HDD getting reformatted. That sucks.
Where? I haven't heard anything of the sort.

And seriously, what the fuck is going on?

I don't know what I'll do if I lose my 100% Genji save.
All th Xbots were waiting for this moment.
...or did they PLAN this moment? Think about it. The plot (or the conspiracy portion of it at least) thickens.

I also feel the compulsive need to post this picture as a general reaction:

However, ye of little faith will face the wraith of he who walks behind the rows. The unfaithful will never get a WORKING PS3 ever again and they will be hurled into the abyss for their sins will never be forgiven in the eyes of god. FAITHFUL! YOU MUST BELIEVE. FOR TO BELIEVE IS THE ONLY WAY YE SHALL BE SAVED!

Let me find one of the posts...
I just got a message "your hd will now be rebuilt"

wtf?!?!?!1
my PS3 suffered a critical error, and I get that message. I turned it off and on until I got rid of it (clicking on almost anything triggered it again) and I put in my PSP memory card and transferred all my save data to it, then I let it rebuild. It never happened again.

Just saying there are some reports, so don't do anything with your console just yet. Cause that would suck.
I don't know what I'll do if I lose my 100% Genji save.
That made me laugh my ass off.

it's because the PSN isn't working, otherwise he'd be on that.

Very strange stuff well looks like I won't be streaming until further notice.

Hmmm PSN card is white and finally updated my trophies and gamerpic. Odd though when I click the link below it says the page doesn't exist.
Mine went back in time and brought me back a raptor. They're fucking strong. Gotta go!
Mine brought me back Sony stock, I told the stupid thing Google...

I'm not sure if this has been posted or not but for all the people saying they lost their trophies: PS3 trophies are backed up onto a server off of your PS3. As long as you synced your trophies, you did NOT lose your trophies.

I just booted up my girlfriend's PS3 and it did indeed have the 31/12/1999 date and once I loaded up Bad Company it did "erase" her trophies from the PS3. I shut down the PS3 and went online and logged into her account on the PlayStation site and all of her trophies still showed up on that site perfectly fine.

Actually I AM on PSN right now. Though it's odd to watch people log off and not come back on. The list just keeps getting smaller and smaller.
"most likely has to do with the leap year."

quoted by Brian (PC gamer extraordinaire) on joystiq
It's not even leap year. Sony can't even get its bugs right.

Guys, it's just like what the Zune had in 2008, except that PS3's are still functional. Expect everything to be back to normal by Tuesday.

Lot of good this will do anyone if the PS3's end up shatting the bed...

Sony twitter updates

PSN status update: We're narrowing down the issue and continue to work to restore service to all. Updates as soon as we have them.

PSN status update (part 2): Readers/followers are confirming that "slim" units (120/250 GB models) are connecting normally.

My cousin just came back from walmart. No ps3 slims. I guess ill just have to wait for this to get fixed.

wow must be nice to have the income of some of you guys who take this opertunity to buy a xbox or slim.. Id just wait it out.

This is from GAF. Should be put on OP:
Everyone READ THIS PLEASE.

Here's what's going on right now: something with the PS3's internal clock has borked in some pre-slim models. This is not a PSN issue; it has to do with your PS3's clock. This clock is NOT related to the OS clock. It seems to be a leap year bug. Setting your clock ahead will do nothing. All PS3s around the world were affected at the exact same time.

Does this affect me?

-If you have a Slim PS3, you're good to go. Continue playing it as normal.
-If you have a "fat" PS3, you may be affected. Some fat PS3s have worked ok, but it seems a good majority have been bugged.

What does this bug mean?

-If affected, your date and time has been set to a random past date. This prevents you from signing into PSN, playing any PSN games, or using any DLC. Your trophies will also not display correctly or be able to sync.

How do I fix it?

-You can't. Even if you don't sign into PSN, it won't help. This is a hardware issue.

So, what do I do?

-Wait 24 hours. Other products that have had similar bugs have corrected themselves after the "bugged" day. On Monday around 6pm central time, all PS3s will automatically correct themselves...maybe.

-If that doesn't work, we'll need a firmware update from Sony, which should be a pretty important priority for them right now.

Did I lose my data/themes/etc?

Your save data/games/dlc/themes are fine. They'll be fixed when the PS3 is fixed. Trophies are uncertain right now, but they'll be fine if you've synced them before the PS3 was bugged. Unsynced trophies are an unknown right now.

So there ya go, my handy FAQ.
Are you really this naive?

Don't worry guys,

I just checked, and the Avatar theatrical trailer I had downloaded on a previous date still works. I know, because I just watched it.

Us rich folk have to stick together.

Anyone have a $20? I need to blow my nose.

That's boring, I much prefer the doomsaying.

Seriously though, the most interesting bit will come if the system doesn't auto-correct after 24 hours. I haven't turned on my PS3 since yesterday but from what I've read, I won't be able to get online with it right now with the problems that the hardware seems to be experiencing. As such, how would I get a firmware fix on my old 20 gb model?
