Sorry to divert topic, but I got into the Little Big Planet Vita Beta. It says you get a "test" custom for the Vita Version after the best is done. Now I feel like pre-ordering the game.
So 1 TB in base 10 = about 976.5 GB in base 2 if I did my math correctly. Then you take away some space that the OS needs for its files, and there you go.
Since it's off-topic, I'll spoiler it.

Close. It's 931 GB in base 2. For every 1000s unit change, you lose the ~2.4%. So when dealing in GB, you lose 2.4%^3 bytes.

Don't mean to divert this thread but I figure with people hopping on after E3 and the amount of full game downloads we are about to get I thought I would share. It is crazy that in the end a 1TB drive most likely starts with 830GB on a PS3. It is still a huge amount of space but that is big difference from what one might think they were getting. Sony kinda dropped the ball on that part of the OS design.

Same. The game is super fun so far. Looks shocking good on the Vita.

yeah i got the biggest hd the ps3 had 3 years ago with the 160 gig, then got the biggest i could find 2 years ago with 320 gig. i was shocked when the 320 gig after all installed and ready to go only had like 270 gig free. i was like wtf.
now im down to 6gig and installing/deleting etc like mad. oh wellz. tis life.
Ok so I upgraded my hard drive today. Not a problem at except for the fact 3 out of 4 screws stripped on me. It was really ridiculous but I got it to work. So I learned a few things about HDs today. First, a 500 GB is actually 465 GB based on some thing where the manufacturer rates a GB as 1000000000 bytes but in reality the device reads it as 1073741824 bytes so it is actually less. I also learned that the PS3 reserves quit a bit of space on a larger drive (not sure if it is a straight % or what the calculation is) so that my free space on an empty drive is 413GB. It was a little eye opening for sure. I know on my 60GB drive I had like 55GB/47GB free. Seems silly the PS has to reserve so much space but maybe there is no good way to mathematically do this so a "%" is used instead.
Even more off-topic but where's a good place to look for HD installation recommendations and instructions? I don't even want to begin downloading the free PS+ stuff until I upgrade my 120GB to 500. I'd like to know what is the best (and cheapest) drive to get, how to transfer stuff, and of course how to install. I figure there's probably tons of info on the web but there might be a few "go to" sources.

I mean, is this all there is to it?

http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-PlayStation-3-Slim-Hard-Drive-Replacement/3223/1

That is really, really simple. I've been yanking old HD's out of a couple of dead laptops and installing them in external enclosures and this looks way simpler.

The big questions then are which drives to get (the ones they link to are $100+) and how to transfer stuff (anything easier/better than just dumping saves to a USB drive?).

On the HD topic, is it possible to attach an external HD to a PS3? I assume the answer is no. QI would love to connect a 1 TB and be done with it.

I used a combo of YouTube, and Google. Basically what you want to remember when it comes to picking a drive is:

1. Has to be a 2.5 inch laptop HDD. 5400 rpm not 7200 due to overheating issues.

2. The problem with backing up media, such as movies, music and games is you're gonna need an external HDD with some of the space(partition) formatted to fat32. You can do this through disk management in windows. Unfortunately, windows only allows you to format partitions in fat32 up to 32gb iirc.

When you've got the new drive in, you can take the old one, put in an enclosure (sold on amazon for a couple bucks), and format it on your pc to ntfs. Then you'll be able to use it as an external HDD.

G'luck!!

You can, but ps3 only recognizes FAT32. External HDD are in ntfs, which means you would have to create partitions within the HDD in order to use it on ps3.

D'oh - OK, the link I found was recommending 7200 RPM drives so I was looking at those on Amazon. I found a Seagate 750GB 7200 RPM drive for $80. But speed isn't such a huge thing for the PS3 (vs. say a laptop) so the overheating would be a more critical issue. I'll look at 5400's now.

As for backup, well, all my own saves can be put on the PS+ cloud. I don't care if I have to redownload games/themes/avatars/etc - kind of annoying but it can be done. In fact, with a bigger HD I can download a lot more that is not on this PS3 (but is on the older one upstairs). It is really just the game saves of my two sons that I'd have to copy off first - and that can be done via the USB flash drive.

This is a little pricier, but, man with 1TB I don't think I'd have to worry about all my free PS+ stuff any time soon ;)

There's a review on there saying it fits the fat PS3 models. That doesn't matter, though - the HD enclosures are the same (or at least compatible), right?

If you don't have anything other than saves to worry about, then it sounds like you're on the right track!

The 1tb may seem pricey, but just think of how much a proprietary one would cost!! >.<

I was fortunate enough to have a 500gb external HDD just laying around. So I just took the bare drive out of that and used it as my replacement.

EDIT: Just looking at the HDD you chose, and if I may, I would recommend the seagate. It's going for a couple dollars cheaper, and it's got more reviews!

I'm seeing a Seagate that is about $97 but sold by a third party with $9 shipping - so about the same. Anyways, I've blown this topic far enough off the tracks here. But then again, all this great PS+ content does make upgrading HD's somewhat relevant ;).

I just watched an IGN video tutorial on upgrading and they just connected a 1TB external HD to do the backup. But I guess they just neglected to mention the FAT32 formatting issue? Seems like a big deal as most people wouldn't have that and would connect their external drives and not have them work. Or does the backup utility work regardless? I'm guessing probably not.

http://www.gamefront.com/how-to-upgrade-or-replace-your-ps3-hard-drive/

This is the website I used. It covers the back up and firmware stuff. I have a fat PS3 so I actually did not have to download the firmware. I assume it is store on some type of on board memory that the slim no longer has. I did do a backup and restore but I only has like 7 GB of stuff, which is about to change big time.

I actually got a 500GB Seagate 7200 rpm drive over the 500GB WD Scorpio Blue 5400 rpm. The heating issue is debatable since many people have used the 7200 rpm drive with no problems. In fact my drive pulls less power than the WD one. It was $10 more but it has twice the cache. I figure I am running more straight from the HD that it will help will load times. It was not cheap though. I got it for $90 at BBY but I just felt safer buying through them and I have a ton of credit.

Just hope that none of those game saves are locked or you'll have to copy everything off the HDD just to get those ones to be included if I remember correctly. That's what happened with my 40gb PS3 when I bought a slim. I had a save for Mercenaries 2 and found out it was copy protected(fuck you, EA/Pandemic). Unfortunately I don't think that the people at my closest GS woulda lemme in their back room to transfer everything from my old HDD on my 40gb to the slim PS3's HDD, so I was SOL since I needed to trade the old PS3 and some games to get enough for the slim.

I just looked at your Seagate 750GB...I wish I would have seen that before today. I think that is a new price for that drive because I looked at my 500GB drive and it was cheaper than the 750 yesterday. I will try not to dwell, I will try not to dwell, I will try not to dwell...I'm dwelling.

In theory, once you plug in the new HDD, the PS3 should format it automatically. IF IT DOES NOT, however, you'll have to manually download(on your pc) the latest PS3 update(from Sony, google "latest firmware update PS3" an it should come up) onto a thumb drive, plug that into one of the PS3s USB inputs, and follow the directions on the screen.

Btw, when you download the latest firmware update, be sure to create a folder named PS3, then within that folder, create another named UPDATE. Put the update in the UPDATE folder.

It all sounds complicated, but once you're done you'll think it was a peice of cake!

Yeah, I'm getting the update now just in case. But I was talking about the formatting of the backup drive (to us the Backup Utility prior to taking the old HD out). I suppose one way I could do that would be to manually delete all the games, data, and installs and just leave the user accounts and game saves there then hopefully that will be small enough to back up to a USB flash drive all at once.

Oh, I see. Don't think you'll have any issues with those.

It is going to take me all month to just download everything at the rate I am going right now. It is not my network either since I downloaded some stuff on my Xbox at a much faster rate and both are currently hard connected to my network. I have not always had this slow of downloads from them. I wonder if this PS+ stuff is slamming their network?

I have a question. So my internet is shitty and well basically what I want is to know if I can backup PSN games to an external HD of some sort. I got a few that are like 10 gigs or so and I don't just want to delete them because it will take about 3+ days to redownload one of them.

If I have to, I will but I would rather not due to my bad internet.

Unless you're Plus, but oh yeah, you don't think it's worth it.

Extremely simple to replace the HD. Lots of little, but simple steps.

1) Copy all locked game saves to the cloud (and non-locked ones too if you have the space).

2) If you have an external drive the same size or bigger than your current ps3 HDD follow the following steps (if not, skip to step 8 and you'll have to redownload everything)

3) Connect external drive to a PC.

4) Download a format utility (here's one, but there are others out there: http://download.cnet.com/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool/3000-2094_4-10974082.html?tag=mncol

5) Format drive with utility to FAT32

6) Connect newly formatted external drive to PS3

7) Go to PS3 system settings --> Back-up utility --> external drive (this may take a while depending on amount of content)

8) Turn off PS3, remove harddrive cover (on side for fat, on bottom for slim). Remove HDD, unscrew the couple of screws (CAUTIOUSLY or you will strip them!)

9) Remove old HDD, replace with new 2.5" 5400 rpm HDD (7200 rpm optional), replace screws, slide into PS3, put back on cover.

10) Turn on PS3. For fat, it'll auto prompt you to format. For slim, you'll have to download the latest update (step 11)

11) Go to http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/index.htm and download the update onto a thumbdrive. You'll have to make a folder called PS3 with a subfolder called UPDATE and then place the download in that folder.

12) Insert thumbdrive into PS3 USB port, follow prompts to upload onto PS3, then format when prompted.

13) Go to system settings --> back-up utility --> restore and select your external drive. (This will bring your system back to the previous settings on your newest drive).

14) Copy protected game saves from the cloud onto your HDD and everything will be back to normal!! You might have to attempt to sync your trophies several times, but even if it says failed, it actually is updating a few each time. I had to do it 4 times before it successfully finished, and each attempt took about 5-10 minutes each.

I'm 95% sure you can, you just can't play them off of the external drive.

I have a question, With ps + are the free games via cloud or download? Do you get to keep free or paid content if ps+ isnt continued. Trying to figure out what size hd ps3 to buy, Thanks

Via download. You keep all paid content + free avatars/themes. You get locked out of any free games until you renew your membership. 500gb should be plenty sufficient.

The slim came out in 2009, PS+ only started in 2010 if I remember correctly, so that would've been kind of impossible back then.

But yeah, not at $50 it's not worth it to me. Maybe 1/3 that and I'll bite though. Cmon Target ad misprint again.

I know it wouldn't have helped you then, but it will help people now.

Even though I still think that $50 (while fair) is a bit expensive for the one year subscription. I somehow feel more comfortable paying the full price for PS+ over say $35 for one year of Live.
But for people WITHOUT PS+, they still have to copy everything over I assume? I don't just automatically assume everyone on here has PS+.
Which is why I said unless you're Plus.

I'm pretty sure there is no other way to back up copyrighted saves and move them to a new hard drive. You can back up your system but it has to go back to the same hard drive. I'm not 100% on this, but pretty sure.

If I'm remembering correctly, Cheapest sold his old system to get a slim just before the big update that allowed you to do a direct transfer of all of your content from one PS3 to another.

Since it's been pages of HDD talk, I'll give my two cents.

1) I used to love Seagate, but their quality has slowly gone down and down. Western Digital is still good though.
2) The 640GB Western Digitals are crap.
3) Western Digital Scorpio Blues are low-end, and not great. I highly recommend Scorpio Blacks.
4) About the heat issue. When it was tested YEARS ago, the 7200 rpm drives weren't significantly hotter. Nowadays, if you get a 7200 rpm Scorpio Black over a 5400 rpm Scorpio Blue, the Black will actually be cooler. In my laptop, my 500GB Scorpio Black is almost a whole 10 degrees cooler than a 640 GB Scorpio Blue, for example.

For example, I think this would be a good choice, if you're ok with the price.

Yeah. I got a slim just about day and date that they released them to stores. That was during the one trade promo where GS was giving $150 for fat PS3's and I think the MSRP had just dropped to $299.99 not too long before that.

Hmmm... OK, the blues have good reviews and people say they work great with the PS3, but I don't mind mitigating any chance of failure by buying a better one. That's worth a slighly higher "insurance" price. This one is about $7 cheaper than the 1TB blue. There isn't much difference between 750 and 1TB (while I'm sure I could fill either, I doubt I will have to). I just want to be able to download all of the current PS+ free games (everything from start till now), all future ones, and of course all the games I've bought and all the updates for all those games and many disc-based ones too. I don't need to store a bunch of media stuff on it, though, because I have a network-attached drive to play movies and music from. So for just gaming-related purposes I'm sure 750 GB is fine. I just checked my Slim and it is a 120GB with about 15GB free at the moment - and I have yet to download any of the big PS+ games for this month and about 2/3 of my PSN purchases and PS+ freebies are not even on this system yet.

OK - I'm buying that one. Now to see if I can scrounge up an external drive to backup my system...

Edit: And sweet - I just found an old 250GB external USB hard drive on my desk that was sent to me in my old job that is FAT32 format. It has some data on it that I can just wipe. I guess both me and them forgot I had it ;).

I have a 40 gig and have to delete installs all the time...I guess I could crack open the 250 GB, but I am not sure that will be enough either.

Argh...I can't seem to add points to my 360 account.

Anyway, is there a reason (besides Microsoft has the licenses to distribute them) why PS3 only owners can't have titles like Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun, Raiden IV, Raiden Fighters Aces, and Triggerheart Excellica?

I'm so going for a 1TB when I have the money. Got a 320GB external hard drive and will probably just delete/back-up all the free stuff I got from PSN.

Hi guys, my Ps3 slim 120 GB is almost full... thanks PS+ \\:D/ !!!
So now I have to upgrade my HDD but I only have $65 and I'm looking for 320 GB of capacity. Would you please recommend me the best options for that price?

Thanks in advance.

The western digital scorpio blue are great drives, the only thing different about the scorpio blue is that the warranty is 3 years vs 5 years on the scorpio black, and the scorpio blue are 5400RPM drives vs 7200RPM for the scorpio black.

I only use western digital hard drives, they run cool, and quiet. I have one in my PS3, one in my macbook pro, and another in my sony vaio. The oldest one in my sony vaio is a scorpio blue from 2007, still runs great till this day. The PS3 is 4 years old and I bought the scorpio black 7200RPM drive for it, it has been exactly one year since I upgraded and it still works like new.

No - thus the last 2 pages of discussion on upgrading the hard drive in the PS3 ;).

No, the PS3 doesn't run games off an external hard drive. The PS3 actually formats and encrypts the drive when you place a hard drive in it. It runs in a different proprietary file system. This is why no PC can read the contents of a drive that has been inserted into the PS3.

Does anyone know a direct way to upload saves manually to the cloud, and then redownload them to my new hard drive? I've obviously played games before and after having Plus which haven't been saved ;)

Go to the save and hit the triangle button. It'll give you options for the save there.
