Building a spreadsheet of prices right now. Codemasters jumps up to the top of the "fuck You" list with Dirt 3 being listed at $15 for a seven day rental. That's about twice what I recall spending to rent games at Blockbuster back in the day.

I do like that a number of these games are the Ultimate Editions, so you at least get access to the DLC with the game.

Edit: I've also seen a few games that are not on PSN at all, like Alpha Protocol and El Shaddai, which is a cool thing to see.

Edit:

Mega Man 9: $3/$4/$6/$8

Mega Man 10: $3/$6/$8/$15

Mega Man 10 is $9.99 on PS3, but if you want a long-term rental, it's 50% extra. Capcom's on the "fuck You" list.

Something to keep in mind is Playstation Now will be available on platforms where buying the actual game won't be possible. There are PS4 owners who don't own PS3s, but there is also another market of people who simply bought a Bravia tv or bought a Playstation TV mainly to stream Netflix and other content.

Some of the Playstation Now prices don't make sense for gamers who buy a console every generation, but for the other consumers Sony probably hopes to attract the prices might be reasonable. The less than casual to the non-gamer. They can try these games without having to buy a full fledged console.

I was so excited to see what this PSNow thing is all about!
Wow. A couple people here obviously understand PSNow, but...

They could have taken the WiiU approach and let the console boot up in some sort of PS3 mode. I don't want to speculate on exactly how much that would have driven up the cost, but it was certainly doable.

And if they are allowing you to "rent" PS3 ports on PS4, there is absolutely no reason why, at the very least, digital purchases couldn't have been brought over.... if not physical copies as well. I'm sorry but your Cell processor comment just doesn't fly. Even people who know nothing about the hardware should be able to put this together.... If you can "rent" the PS3 version on PS4, it's a simple matter to give you access to your PSN library on the same service. Or have they finally agreed to let people access their available PSN games via this service? Because, last I heard, that wasn't the case on PS4....
So much wrong in here. Can't believe you go on to call others ignorant later in the conversation.

So...

1) For the console to "boot up in some sort of PS3 mode" would have required them to put the Cell processor in the PS4. Then you'd also need extra engineering to deal with power, chip placement, memory, and other issues relating to a secondary processor. All in all, it would have added $100-200 to the price of a ps4 for a feature people like to bitch about but rarely actually used back when the PS3 had hardware emu.

In other words, while "doable" it would have been stupid as hell for Sony to put BC into the PS4. That said, it's quite likely th ps5 will have BC now that they've abandoned Cell / unique architecture.

2) "And if they are allowing you to "rent" PS3 ports on PS4, there is absolutely no reason why, at the very least, digital purchases couldn't have been brought over"

The PS4 isn't running PSNow games. It's just showing video from the game running on a server. So... yes, there is a reason. There is no difference between a PS3 bluray game and a PS3 PSN game -- both are coded for the ps3 architecture, just one is on a disc.

3) " Even people who know nothing about the hardware should be able to put this together"

You obviously know nothing about the architecture, so how about you put it together.

4) "If you can "rent" the PS3 version on PS4, it's a simple matter to give you access to your PSN library on the same service."

If you paid, say, $10 to buy Pixeljunk Monsters on PS3, then you paid to be able to download the game and play it on your PS3(s).

You did not pay for unlimited streaming of the game using dedicated servers. If Sony gave us all the games we already owned on PSNow for free, the service would bleed money forever. I mean, seriously, imagine someone who got FFTactics putting 100s of hours of stress on their server farm for 'free'... it just makes no economic sense.

5) Consider Netflix. Netflix streams fixed video files. Very simple, one server can service many users. PSNow isn't streaming fixed video, it's actually processing user input (with very little lag, amazinging) and transmitting dynamic game content. It's amazing they pulled it off from a technical standpoint.

6) PSNow is heavily targeting people who do not own a given console. Sure, if you have PS3, often the cheapest way to get the game will be to buy it used somewhere. But if you want convenience, or if you only have a Bravia TV or a tablet, then all of a sudden you can play the Uncharted series with minimal investment. That's the primary audience. Not cheapassgamers that already have ps3s and buy everything on clearance.

-----

I've used PSNow. I think it's a fantastic service. It's not really for me, because I have a ps2/3/4 and vita and an insane backlog. But I could see myself using it on rare occasions.

I think the 4 hour option is actually interesting. Cheap way to sample a game, or, more likely, if you've got friends over and just want to have something quick to play.

I can confirm that, as of right now, PS Now access on PS4 will not give you free access to anything hosted. It's as if everything you bought on PS3 never happened. I was hoping against hope that that would change as the service became public but I know that will never happen.
Again, that would be unfeasible. You paid for a license on your ps3. You did not pay for unlimited streaming of the game off of servers for perpetuity.

Actually that line of thinking is scary. Sure cheap to sample a game but not as cheap as a demo. Do they make demos anymore?

Only a few games would be great for four hours. Maybe PSASBR? Party games or split screen shooters.

Not for most games and not always demos that are representative of the final product.

I'd say the four hour option is perfect for an afternoon rental when you have friends over and want to play something new for a few hours.

Looking at the PS Now pricing and it's weird how much some of these publishers/developers are charging and how some, mostly indies, are restricting options to 90 days. I'm not sure why Telltale thinks anybody needs 90 days for their episodes and are charging 80% of what they cost natively on PS3. I hope some of these publishers see that charging $20-$40 for the highest tier is ridiculous when they're just rentals.

I'd be fine with $2 for four hours and $6 for a week for retail stuff. I don't know that PSN games would be something that I'd rent.

I'll have to do some research and come up with a list of price comparisons to PS3.
besides being digital what makes this any better then say gamefly. i mean if your paying 6 bucks to rent a game, couldnt you just rent it from gamefly cheaper. 6 bucks per week would be 24 per month. Could be on a 2 games at a time via gamefly (i know their shipping sucks though)

Slidecage making sense. w t f ?

It's better BECAUSE it's digital. Instant access to the game. Instant gratification.

Still too pricey but if someone wants a game now, this would be the solution.

All right! I finally got paid after missing two weeks of deals that I REALLY wanted to buy but literally could not afford. Whoo hoo. \sarcasm

Now there is nothing I want. Hopefully better sales will come again really soon.

I could drive out to redbox and spent $1.20-1.50 on a movie, or for 3X-4X more I could stay sitting in my chair and rent the same movie streaming from my cable provider. Obviously a great many people must choose the latter option otherwise they wouldn't go through the trouble to offer it. For value conscious people, such as ALL OF US since this is CHEAPASSgamer, PS NOW sounds like a strange, foreign, silly thing because we're all stingy tightwads, this service isn't really aimed us.

Man, too bad Dragon's Crown isn't cross buy. That would've been sweeeeeeeet.
It's not crossbuy but according to responses in the comments we will still get both versions of the game.

Appreciate it. I'll likely never boot this thing up again but I guess it might make sense for someone...out there. Bravia owners, perhaps. Or someone that suddenly dectdes they want play games on their private yacht.
I'm the same way, then I think about stuff like:

What if there's some ps2 rpg I feel like playing, and don't want to deal with paying, say, $10 or $20 on amazon used, then reselling, dealing with shipping, etc. A monthly rental might make sense.

Or, sometimes I feel like replaying a game like Uncharted 2... but I sold that long ago. Heck, when Uncharted 2 came out, I rebought Uncharted to play that again and then sold it. Paying $7 to run through U2 again rather than dealing with the Amazon spin around sort of makes sense to me.

I still don't know, I'm definitely not the primary audience. I'd probably just spend that $7 on a vita game and wait for an Uncharted collection to come to PS4. But I can see the draw of psnow, even if i don't need it. If I had more disposable income (the kind of person that pays digital rental prices for movies, for example), I'd probably be fine renting lots of games. But i'm cheap.

Ehhh I don't consider myself a "tightwad". Ironically, I spend more on games than I ever have since joining CAG. It's all about value for me and I don't see much with PS Now. Options are always nice, though.

Demos don't exist for all games, and demos don't have trophies and rarely carry progress over to the real game.

I agree $3 for 4 hours sounds expensive (which is why you just rent for a week or month and get a reasonable price), but at the same point I can't imagine it getting much cheaper. At $2 for four hours, you can beat almost any game other than rpg for $4, which is dirt cheap. Publisher gets a cut, servers cost money, at some point it's just not viable.

I mean, hell, many people rent movies that last 2 hours for more than that.

among other things, you don't need to own the console. heck, eventually, you won't even need to own 'a' console. but you'll still be able to play uncharted by just investing in a dual shock 3 or 4 (which they may even decide to just include with Bravia tvs or something if they think it's worth it).

you also don't need to wait. which is a big deal. when i used to get 3 movies at a time from netflix, i never, ever wanted to watch whatever was at home... because that's what i wanted to watch days/weeks/months ago. Netflix Watch It Now suits me much better, because I get to watch it instantly. Same thing here.

I rarely have the attention span to play through a game without jumping to another before completion. I've been getting better at it but knowing I have "a week" to beat something isn't how I like to game. Especially if I plunked down $7 or $8.

For older and obscure games, I could see the appeal. But from the looks of it, a lot of these games are still in heavy circulation at a similar price PS Now commands to rent them. I'm all for digital convenience but that's just crayyy. I will gladly hop my ass in the car and head down to the piss-stained floors of Gamestop before I pay 3x as much to play an inferior version of Uncharted 2...that I can't even keep.

I'm thinking Sony is going to make a lot of money by offering the Playstation Now in hotel rooms, and take advantage of all those traveling with kids. There's certainly a market for this.

lol at some of the rental prices being the same as the purchase prices.  Buy Sonic CD for $4.99 or stream-rent it for the exact same price, hmmm.

The amount of negative reception it's getting for the price is reassuring, as it at least raises the odds Sony will take that into account when pricing the subscription service and such.  Even some of the most typically uninformed and naive areas of the internet (Facebook comments, PlayStation Blog comments) are in unanimous agreement that the pricing model doesn't make sense in accordance with purchasing costs.  Doesn't seem likely that many will bite at this point-- at least not enough to make it worthwhile to keep the prices so high (when cutting the cost to something more agreeable would generate significant demand).

The one counterargument I've seen thrown around is that it's most useful for those who don't own PS3s.  That could be a good source of their sales in a few years, but being so early into the PS4's life, I'd bet that a very large number of PS4 owners are also PS3 owners.

Sorry if this has already been answered, but when renting a game on psnow and it's $3 for 4 hours does that mean I get to rent it until I've actually played it for 4 hours? Or does it mean if I rent it at 10 am I only have until 2 pm to play it. Hope that made sense.

Technically, neither, it's slightly more complex... when you rent something, the timer doesn't start right away, but waits until you start playing. So let's say I rent it tonight, but then get caught up doing something else. I finally start the game next Tuesday... and then the timer starts and I have 4hrs/week/whatever to play it.

So if you start the game at 10 am, you'd only have till 2pm... but you could have rented it well in advance.

It's likely the pricing will never make sense to those of us on this site. They aren't competing with how cheap you can get a disc only version from gamestop, or how cheap you can get it from PSN. If you have a ps3, you'll certainly be able to find cheaper ways to get the game. But if you've got disposable income and like convenience, or don't have a ps3 at all, then... maybe?

I mean, heck, I just looked up the movie Lone Survivor. It's 4.99 SD, 5.99 HD. OR... I could drive 1 minute and rent it a bluray from Redbox for $1.25. Yet... people still go digital. Why? I have no idea, because I'm not the target market.

And that's why people talking about driving to gamestop to buy games cheaper, etc, are sort of missing the point. There is added value in just clicking a button and getting a game. Most of us have no interest in that added value (we're on a site called cheapassgamer where people sometimes jump through hoops to save a dollar). Products like this are aimed at disposableincomegamer.

I don't see what being so-called cheap has to do with this. In fact I sometimes feel that "cheap ass gamer" is a bit of a misnomer. Most of us are clearly willing to spend when the value is apparent. How many of us already have PS4s? And hell, it doesn't get more "premium niche" than Vita.

The current pricing structure for PS Now flat-out sucks. It's not a simple binary of conivence and price. I frequently use Vudu and other digital services. The redbox comparison is a poor one because it ignores things like availability, bandwidth usage and ease of use.

I'm willing to forgo a few dollars in savings if it makes sense. I'm not seeing it here. Sure, we can point out a few instances where it might prove advantageous but can you honestly see this taking off in its current form? Games often take weeks to finish so I'm not getting the whole instant gratification defense. What's an hour more to go down to a store and buy it? Or a few days for it to ship from Amazon or Gamefly?

Part of the beta feedback should absolutely concern these prices and I hope Sony is paying attention. I know they spent quite a bit of money acquiring the service and likely even more tailoring it to their needs so I really do want it to be successful.

What time do the games go live? I know with the 360/XB1 they usually go live a few hours before the first day. It's 11:27am Eastern Here and it's still showing up full price for me.

I guess I just don't agree that the pricing structure sucks. Like I said, digitally renting a movie is often $6, sometimes more. For that price, you get a game for a week. And the technology behind the two are quite different -- the film is just streaming a simple file, psnow essentially requires a dedicated ps3 server, input, dynamic content, etc. Not to mention, we're talking about two hours of movie watching verses possibly 40+ hours of gaming, depending on the gamer.

The reason being 'cheap' comes into play is because many of us would never rent a film for $6 in the first place. We're into deals, and we know that's not a deal. Likewise, we know how and where to get better prices on games. And I believe that means we're never going to be the target market of a service based largely on convenience. Convenience costs, and many here are out for the best deal, even if that mean driving to 3 different stores trying to price match some mistake in an advert, spending $10 of gas in the process.

And while I agree Redbox pricing isn't relevant to PSNow pricing, it was relevant to my example of people paying 5x the price to sit at home and not drive to a redbox when renting new release films digitally. Those same people likely don't want to drive to a gamestop if they don't want to drive to the local supermarket/convenience store.

I think people get sticker shocked at the 4 hour rental plan, but the rest of them seem pretty fair (excepting some ridiculous outliers which people use as examples, but that's not Sony's fault when pubs set the prices).

I don't see $7 or $8 for a week as being particularly bad. Many of the 3 month prices are great too. And the 4 hour one is more expensive, sure, but that's how all subscriptions are tiered -- you get better deals as you go higher up.

If a game takes weeks to finish, then get the 3 month plan. Or buy it used. But again, you own a ps3 so you have that option. For someone who doesn't, or doesn't feel like dealing with buy/resell, I can see the appeal of just busting through, say, Uncharted, for $7 or so for a week.

Do I see this as successful? Eventually, yes. Maybe not this year or next, and certainly not till they have a subscription service in place. But in terms of the 'future'? Very much so. Many people already stream their films through netflix, amazon, etc, and stream their music through various services. 10 years ago we'd all think that was crazy, because we wanted personal libraries. Times change, not always for the better.

But I definitely think there are some people out there who would love to just have their tv, a controller in a drawer, and drop $8 every once in awhile to play a title like Infamous or Uncharted 2 or whatever. No investment in a console, no hardware lying around. Just like so many have given up their music/film libraries for the ease of digital.

I'm also perfectly fine not being the target audience. I know the prices they'd need to convince me are so low as to be unreasonable. But that's because I've already invested $1k+ in their hardware suite and therefore am perfectly set to play games locally for cheaper.

EDIT -- put it this way -- i not totally on board to pay $8 to have Uncharted for a week, because I have a ps3. I might do it since I sold Uncharted... but probably not? But if I could pay $8 to, say, play through each Halo, or Crackdown? I'm much more likely. I don't have, nor will I ever buy, the hardware. But if I could stream it for minimal investment? Sure, why not?

Renting movies from Amazon, Vudu, etc. usually costs $3-$6 depending on SD/HD and you can only watch it for 24-48 hours once you start it. PS Now gives you seven days to play a game for about $6 for most of them, which is about what I paid to rent games from Blockbuster when that was the best option out there. I make that comparison ignoring the crazier prices that certain publishers are setting because we can both agree that those people are stupid for setting those prices.

If you're renting a game this way, you're going to play it much like you'd focus your time on a game you got from Blockbuster back in the day to get the most out of it for your money and not just ignore it like you would for something from Netflix or Gamefly because the monthly fee causes a lack of rush to use it up. Offering a subscription service for access to some of the games would be great to get rid of the a la carte/time pressure that it currently has for those that would be likely to use it. That's what OnLive did after that initial terrible sub + purchase business model failed and it was pretty cool for the bits that I used it.

If you have a PS3 and can easily go get the physical versions of these games from a local store instead, why would you care about this service at all in its current form?

There's a demo so that you can get a taste of the weirdness to see if you want more of that. I've only played the first, but it's a good, weird game.

i like to know the price. Heard 19.99 then 29.99 now 39.99

i buy it at 20. I pass at 30 and run from it at 40

There's going to be a release date announcement of a fairly big PS4/Vita indie game that I know people around here are looking forward to on Tuesday that isn't Minecraft, so keep an eye out for that.

Played a bunch of Rogue Legacy. I finally figured out what the chicken phobia trait does, though I don't know why it didn't seem to happen earlier when I think I had previous people with that trait.

Reading all the discussions and debates about PS Now reminds me just why I buy as many games as possible from Steam and use my PS3 for exclusives (mostly).

I love that I can go back and boot up something like Baldur's Gate 2 without worry.

Running steam games on my pc sucks - even games you wouldn't think are intensive heat up my laptop instantly. And I have no desire for a proper rig. More to the point, I want to stick a game in and have it work... so consoles for me it is, despite actually preferring many of the 'deeper' pc games over console fare.

And ps3 games will always work on my ps3. it only gets sticky during generational changes, and now that the ps4 has (mostly) standardized architecture, that problem may go away.

Yeah, but my point with that post was that the pricing reception everywhere else was also overwhelmingly negative. Even the bargain-naive seem staunchly opposed to it.

hope its an rpg but wont count on it

SAO Fragment release date is August 19th....I will buy at $29.99 easily but 40 dollars is full physical vita purchase price which I don't feel is good for a digital only game.
