Thanks, you might have me convinced. Visuals don't really bother me, my main concern is the gameplay. Hopefully I won't be too frustrated with the controls and such.
The controls take some getting used to, but the same is true for MGS2, so you might as well get acquainted if you're planning on playing through the HD collection. Kojima is always a little too ambitious than technology has allowed, but it makes for some excellent game design. That, and MGS is much shorter than 2 or 3, so if you absolutely hate it, better to find out now. I recently played MGS2 for the first time, and while I really enjoyed it, it seemed like it would never end.

Just to add probably the only dissenting opinion on this on the entire internet, I found the controls abysmal on MGS and on the HD collection - to the point where I found I couldn't make myself play any of them. Never played any of them when they were originally out, so it was all new experiences to me and it just felt clunky and like the stealth mechanics of the genre have been improved upon by leaps and bounds in the current generation (by other games). The cutscene length was also an issue for me, but that's a stylistic thing which I certainly wouldn't hold against it.

I'm sure they really are fantastic games, but coming late to the party I found myself quite frustrated and disappointed. Don't know if you're in the same boat as me but just something to keep in mind. I'm sure I'll try again when I have fewer backlogged games since they are so well regarded.

I've recently played through MGS2 and 3 on Vita (for the first time) and 1 is still my favorite. Play it! :) I'm looking forward to playing through 4 at some point. The controls aren't bad but do take getting used to, if you go in with that frame of mind you'll be good.

I was thinking of taking on Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes on the Gamecube to scratch that itch as well.

Maybe I'll do that since I can't play Spyro 1-3 and Crash 1-3 on my Vita.

Too bad Twin Snakes will probably never get the HD treatment (and if it did, it'd be in Wii U most likely). I still have a copy that I never got around to playing...

Regarding controls, the common wisdom seems to be: play them in order. Improvements in the controls in MGS3&4 apparently make it hard to go back to the first two games. I'm still waiting for a rainy or sick day to power through MGS3 myself.

So the controls are significantly improved from MGS2 to MGS3?  I have never played any of them (except a few minutes of MGS4 on PS3) but wanted to try them on the Vita.  I put MGS2 to the side when I was frustrated (mostly by the controls) and intended to give it another try.  Then a good trade in offer came along, so I got rid of it figuring I might try it again the future if I find a great deal.  If MGS3 has significantly better controls, I may pick it up again.

I don't recall ever having control issues with MGS1 or 2.  They're different, yeah.  But I thought they were pretty easy to master.

Oh, except for [customspoiler="MGS2 Spoiler"] the Raiden swordfight at the end.  That was beyond painful.[/customspoiler]

They really made strides with modernizing the controls in MGS4. MGS3's control scheme leans more towards the MGS1 & MGS2 side of things.

The only real flaw in MGS2's controls is that they place a heavy emphasis on the use of analog buttons. I can't tell you how many times I've set off an alarm because I didn't release the button gently enough. :bomb:

They modernized the controls first in MGS3 Subsistence. That's when they first opened the door to the 3D camera and more of a third person stealth title. MGS1, 2, and 3 (original) were always about the fixed camera angles (mostly from above).

IMO, MGS1 is definitely still the best and the subpar graphics give it a certain charm that I think a lot of games today lack. I feel the same way about Silent Hill 1. Those terrible graphics gave it a far more eerie atmosphere than any of the more polished / higher res'd titles that followed it.

Thanks for all the input guys. I played MGS4 a few years back and despite not knowing a lot of the story, I loved it. I think I'll go ahead and give the first a shot. I usually like to experience the beginnings of a series if I'm able.

The Wolf Among Us will launch on PSN on Tuesday:

The Wolf Among Us will also premiere on PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3 in North America on Tuesday October 15th. The PlayStation 3 version of the game series will be available for consumers to purchase as individual episodes for $4.99 USD or as a Season Pass for $19.99 which will include episodes 1-5 as they are released.

Having zero familiarity with the comic, this game looks pretty good- I'll definitely play through it just because of The Walking Dead last year.

I wonder when we're going to get some firm details on TWD Season 2...

i hope they dont just try to do another walking dead, but based on a different comic. im definitely excited to try it though.

They finally release the Crash series and you can't even play it on the Vita. OMG, it's like Sony doesn't want my money. I was gonna buy all four games. Haven't played them in years. SMH.

Does anyone know if PS1 games that weren't Vita compatible were later on made compatible?

Edit: I'm late as hell as far as them bein' released. I always looked for the games through the Vita which would explain why lol.

Crash series has been out for a while, bud.

I'm gonna edit your face in a second.

Anyway if anyone could answer my question, it would be appreciated.

It is really weird to see Kevin Butler doing Wendy's commercials:

I honestly came in here with something on topic to say and then that came on TV and I totally lost it.

Sony does want your money. It's Activison that doesn't.

Just a heads up, the Arrow skin for Injustice Gods Among Us is now free at PSN and Live.

Well I lucked into a great deal on a Vita off of CraigsList yesterday.  Vita and a 16 GB card for $110.  No scratches on screen.  A few scratches on the silver lining on the outside edge and the charging cable is a bit worse for wear.

Now I have something to play this huge backlog of Vita games from plus.  I do not even know what half the games are when I went scrolling through my download list last night.  Since I am currently in a trophy/achievement competition, I went ahead and went for Sound Shapes first from the backlog.  I am hoping I can play through story mode and beat mode and the easier death mode levels before doing a cloud save and auto-popping the rest along with the plat.  Not sure if that will work, but I'm going to try.

I already was addicted to this thread.  Now that I own a Vita as well, it will be even more interesting to follow.

Debating on the Crash series, what are the chances they will update the games so they are playable on the Vita?
Total speculation, but at this point the chances have to be really low. There is constantly people asking for it on the blog and other places, and whoever is in charge of upgrading them to work on the Vita (whether it's Activision or Sony) just must not care.

It will work. I got the platinum in Sound Shapes on my Vita. All I had to do was do the cloud sync to the ps3 and all of them will pop. Fair warning, some of the death mode levels can be insanely infuriating. THis really has to do with the fact that some of the levels rely mostly on luck.

I was trying to look into that yesterday and can't really see who holds the rights for the Spyro and Crash games in Europe.   It does look like Activision holds the licenses around the world, but the oddity is why can the games be played on the Vita/PS3/PSP in Europe, but only the PS3/PSP here.  (I know this is the case, as I have Crash Bandicoot running on my U.S. PSP.)

Very odd stuff.

Oh I know. I already got 100% on the game on PS3. I want to replay most of it since it is so easy for the competition I am in since the auto-pop trophies wouldn't count. Then I am just going to sync the rest to get another plat. No desire to play that damn planet level with the random spawns again. My blood pressure goes up just thinking about that level.

I lucked out and got a Vita with 5 games and an 8gb chip for $120.  Traded the games in at Gamestop and got like $45 in credit, so it was about $75 for the Vita.  Downloaded all my PSN+ games and bought Persona 4 Golden when it went on sale.  I'm in love with this device now.  P4G is so addicting.

Between this and Disgaea D2, my social life is dead.

D2's gameplay has been very fun for me.  They fixed a lot of the annoying things about the previous Disgaea games, like throwing diagonally.  The master/pupil thing is a lot better now.  It's so much easier to teach everyone healing spells as well as clerics attack spells now.

They added a few new mechanics to help your weaker characters level up/gain mana faster too.  The cheat system removes the whole having to go through the dark assembly to make monsters stronger/weaker, so that's a plus.  All in all, if you loved the previous Disgaeas, this one will satisfy you.

I'm about 10 hours into the game now, and I haven't gone past chapter 3 yet.  Been too busy grinding the item world.

The first was great. I haven't played 2. I didn't like 3 much, either in story or mechanics. I thought the lack of a M/P relationship was a huge downgrade, and hated having to buy skills when just leveling up to get them and using them to improve makes more sense.

D2 has to be my favorite Disgaea so far. Other than that 4 and 3's remake were the best for me.

Love all the new mechanics, especially mounting and diagonal throws

I'm a huge fan of how easy it is to switch pupils, the cheat shop, promoting a unit to a higher version (so you don't have to reincarnate), the evilites and the training facilities. The item assembly is pretty cool too. I haven't played 4 yet, so I don't know if any of those are in that, but D2 is awesome so far (I'm at the end of chapter 4).

For the Spend 50 get 10, I assume it's pre-tax and 49.98 won't count?  Considering P4Golden (19.99) and Dragon's Crown (29.99).  Push comes to shove I can throw in a 50 cent avatar or some shit.

That's a bad sign. "Every budget" means "some cheap things and some crap sales like this week's CoD event."

:whistle2:(

I really wish that capcom would do their steam sale from this week on psn next week. I would buy RE:ORC if they did. Seriously. That's how much I'd like to see a sale that doesn't suck.

Edit - please everyone stop talking about how great the new disgaea is. I absolutely don't have time for that right now. I just can't do it!

(I love disgaea)

Thanks Frisky, I'll be cautiously optimistic for next week.

Also, despite what most others have said they wanted, I hope it's not some type of "Scary Game Halloween sale". I don't really like horror games and pretty much have all the ones I'm even remotely interested in.
