My bad. 37, then. Still way too small of a sample to draw any conclusions. I'm not seeing the Sony bias. With all the reviews compiled, maybe we can draw some sort of conclusion about how they treat Japanese games, or AAA games or franchise games. Who knows -- maybe something is there. As of now, nothing supports that claim, and certainly nothing supports the notion that it's deliberate.

The Bureau and Lost Planet 3 pretty much fall within the average, though.
so... we know:

1) Microsoft funded the site with around $750k.

2) They have a habit of giving Sony exclusives low scores, and in some cases, extremely low scores - to the point that many people on many websites have noticed.

And... you're saying "nothing supports that claim" that Polygon is biased? C'mon, both of these points clearly 'support' the claim that Polygon is biased. Do they prove it beyond a doubt?

Of course not, because nothing could 'prove' it short of a ex-Polygon employee admitting it, which would never happen. They can always hide behind it being their opinion. I mean, heck, all they would need to do is give one Sony exclusive a good review and then they could hide behind that as a shield saying 'see?! we're not biased!'.

By your definition, at what point would something 'support the claim'?

I'm not saying they are definitely biased. I personally think they are, in part due to following the (MS) money, and in part because giving a hyped game the 'worst' review earns clicks and ad revenue.

We're talking 'gaming journalism' - where nearly everyone involved is getting free swag, free trips, and ultimately their paychecks since the sites themselves get their advertising dollars from the same companies they review. It's a perfect storm of corruptive influences, complete with text book scandals showing it in action... and it's somehow hard to believe Polygon would be biased?

All I have to say is, why do we care? Even if they are biased it's not as if it affects any of us, nor will continually debating it change anything. It's been said before, but I think it stands to be repeated, that you should find a reviewer or several who you agree with and stick with them. The beauty of the internet is how many options you have, which is why I've never seen the point in singling out reviews. There will always be people that like/dislike a game more/less than everyone else, but if the games I like are not the same as the person reviewing, then why should it matter? I might still like it or hate it regardless so it doesn't serve much of any purpose to me at least, other than getting a basic understanding of how the game works. If Polygon is actually fixing their reviews to gain more hits, well, clearly it's working because they are constantly popping up in this thread alone despite the fact that no one here seems to have any affinity for the site or its editors.

I just don't see the point in continuing to beat this horse to death, but I'm tired and not thinking completely coherently so whatever I suppose...

So I have to state my displeasure that every PS3 game doesn't support screenshots. Just found out FF14 had it earlier and that was awesome. Now I find out that Diablo 3 doesn't appear to and that's awful. Have this bug where I've got both the red and white angel wings on at once and it looks fantastic.

I just don't see the point in continuing to beat this horse to death, but I'm tired and not thinking completely coherently so whatever I suppose...
Yep, thought we had all agreed that doing your own research and understanding who's opinions are in line with your own was most important than scores when we had this same conversation last month.

I completely agree with your approach to game reviews. But allow me to pick on your remarks above... If you replace 'they' with the name of any website or media outlet known to be disingenuous or overly biased when providing information then you already have your answer for why we should care.

I can tell you why I care: Developers' compensation is tied to Metacritic scores. It's a sad truth, but if Polygon is giving arbitrarily low scores to PS exclusives (and it sure looks like they are, whether as clickbait or MS bias doesn't really matter) they're hitting real people in the pocketbook. And making it less likely that those people will be around to develop something else I'll enjoy.

Ahh...waking up to the habitual horse being beaten again here is like that first sip of horrible coffee at work. You hate it, but it just somehow feels right and you can't have your day without it.

I didn't know you could take a screenshot on the PS3. I will have to look up how you do that... ah, it is PS button + Start at same time. I believe that's the same as on Vita.

I find the Polygon stuff quite interesting, but whether or not they are actually biased I don't really care.  Not like I lose sleep over it or anything.  And really, what else is there to talk about this week?  Retro City Rampage on sale for the thousandth time and $4 off of Puppeteer?

And ya, it's beating a dead horse, but at least it's not quite as juvenile as the "piss" and "slap in the face" stuff.

I personally think we need to slap some Polygon editors, then drown them in our piss, THEN continue to beat them after they are dead. Ultimate psn thread justice.

Only certain games apparently even though it's a native feature. Unfortunately Diablo 3 is not one of those but at least FF14 is.
I try to take a screenshot on most of the PS3 games I play, and I can never get it to work. Vita, I have no problem with. I think Wipeout 2048 was the only game I've found on Vita that wouldn't let me take a screenshot. I can't seem to ever get it to work on PS3.

Yeah, it takes the developer actually implementing it from what I read which is just silly if it's a feature of the OS. I'm excited for the PS4 just because of things like that and being able to stream gameplay without jumping through a bunch of hoops.

One of the big benefits of PS4, in my opinion, is how Sony is changing things that were formerly a developer required feature. Remote play being the big one, obviously. But since screenshots are enabled on almost all Vita games, I would imagine PS4 would be the same. Allow the feature unless the dev blocks it.

has the following games ever been on PS+ discount?
Floating Cloud God Saves The Pilgrims HD
Flying Hamster HD
Velocity Ultra

I had a dream last night that was set in kind of a Demon Soul's type environment and I killed this demon thing in a really cool way and I thought to myself, "Man, I wish I could have had that recorded so I could show people like with the PS4."

Nope. Floating Cloud God is really new.

EU PS+ got one or two of those free so maybe we'll get them eventually (*cough cough*) but I'm dying on a sale for Velocity Ultra to check it out.

New Little King's Story --

sweet and charming. none of the rumored slowdown is really an issue for me - i notice it rarely in my congested city, but by the time your population is big enough for it to be an issue you're likely fast traveling and skipping over your main city anyway.

the biggest issue i have with the game is the same one i had with the wii version (but forgot) -- it's just too easy. way, way, too easy. but running around and finding gear and killing monsters and bosses is fun enough, i guess.

Ultimately, I'd say it's great pick up if you're looking for something fairly casual. you've got a small army of followers that you get to dress up with weapons, armors, and gear across a number of jobs. For example, I think i currently have lumberjack with a ninja hat, a business suit, and a pillow axe on my team of 23 right now. taking them around, opening up new areas with their skills, and killing/searching for new lewt to wear is definitely fun, if a bit grindy.

i actually prefer the 'anime' look of this one to the cartoony look of the wii version, which just amplified the casualness of the game for me. i do remember now why i put the wii version down, though - lack of challenge.

----

Unit 13 -- I absolutely loved this game. A budget FPS, certainly, but solid mechanics overall and i really appreciated the no-nonsense mission selection. Sure, there was no direct campaign, but it was fun. Different agents forced different play, which was nice. Some of the very last missions (special assassination missions) had some ridiculous spawn tunnels that were aggravating, but none of the main content had that problem.

EDITED TO ADD- actually, i just realized i put it as FPS, but really it's 3rd person. Though.. in many ways it plays more like a FPS than most other TPS games, except when you're in cover.

Tons of replayability due to every mission having a randomizer option as well as a daily challenge. plus the entire game is based on scoring chains, so you can replay a level to death if you want.

i've plat'd it and don't want to delete it.

as much as i love this game, i hate it too. i've never rage quit a game so much in my life. the death doesn't actually bother me - i'm very used to permadeath and don't mind it at all. it's that the deaths relate to platforming, and i'm just not the biggest fan of platformers to begin with. still, this game has a massive amount of depth to it...there are entire secret levels and tactics that i'll likely never experience. but i understand the importance of that depth; i have that level of understanding of many of the secrets of Nethack. for a fan of platformers i could see this being their forever game.

Totally agree.

Bad reviews can destroy careers and lives. Heck, even on Amazon people post 1 star reviews of books and albums they haven't even read or listened to -- work that people may have spent a year or more of their life creating. It's disgusting.

So when a high profile website like Polygon or IGN give a blatantly lowball review to a Medal of Honor, or a Killzone: Mercenary, or a Dragon's Crown, it definitely annoys me. They're playing with peoples careers and the work they put their blood sweat and tears into.

I mean, c'mon, Polygon gave Resitance Vita a better score than Killzone... and while, sure, different reviewers have different opinions, at some point we have to wonder -- hmm, is there any reason someone might try to undercut the review of a game widely considered to be the best handheld FPS ever, an absolute beauty, and potential system seller? Sadly, the answer is yes.

on a personal level, i also know these same reviewers get all their gear and games for free, plus trips and swag. This bothers me. it's corrupt.

question - i know when you buy a game there is a way to set it to 'auto-download' to your ps3 or vita. can i do this with a game i bought ages ago? or do i need to go through my download list? (i want to use the webstore to redownload a game on my vita, basically).

has the following games ever been on PS+ discount?
Floating Cloud God Saves The Pilgrims HD
Flying Hamster HD
Velocity Ultra
lol, i'm all up on those 3 too thanks to the conversation on another forum.

all 3 are pretty darn new, i believe.

If you've had PS+ for a long time, you might have all 3 in their original PSP mini form already. I know I do. That said, I still want to buy Velocity Ultra because I loved the mini and the demo (plus trophies and HD). I'll buy Flying Hamster if there is a price break. I disliked the Floating Cloud mini... but I hear the second analog stick improves it greatly. Need to see if there's a vita demo for either of those...

Flying Hamster and Floating Cloud are pretty cheap even not on sale, though.

so...

1. Even if they received this money indirectly through Vox, it's problematic. We agree on that. Thing is, as you suggest later on, the entire industry is currently setup this way. Rev3, Machinima, IGN, Gamespot, CAG, Gametrailers...they all receive ad revenue from publishers and hardware manufactures. I'm not suggesting it should remain as incestuous as it appears to be, but I honestly don't think there's some nasty plan behind all of it. Gaming "journalism" began almost as an enthusiast thing. It totally needs to evolve if it wants to be taken more seriously, but there's no need to to be disingenuous and target our frustrations at websites that don't have views consistent with our own.

2. The only place I know of that propagates the Polygon rubbish is GAF, and consequently, people appear to be echoing it here. It's silly and reductive. Any idiot can see they grade games more critically. God forbid they don't give every fuck-ing new release an 11/10. And, God forbid they actually use the entire 10-point scale (lol, TMNT got a 1/10 yesterday). How does this lend itself to a Sony bias? How can you conclusively suggest that they have it out for them? Maybe it's something else. How are they grading other exclusives? How are they grading AAA or indie? Maybe they care more about narrative-driven works. I don't know. And, I'm not saying I need @tyler to do an entire statistical analysis of the data, lol. It's just irresponsible for you or anyone else to disparage an entire staff of writers based on a "hunch" that they may be minions for Major Nelson. I mean, shit, really? Pass the tinfoil hats while you're at it. I say this as someone who takes many of the opinions here seriously. You rave on and on about Spelunky? I buy it. But, I honestly do have to call into question anyone's judgement who's quick to call someone else "biased" because they disagree with them.

Let's take The Last of Us, for instance. Would I have given it a 7.5? Probably not. But everything Polygon said about it was spot on. While every other publication was proclaiming it the Citizen Kane of gaming (lololwat?!), they weren't simply sold on Naughty Dog's penchant for high production value. They thoughtfully made the case that there should be a distinction between story and story-telling. There's obviously a great deal to love about TLoU, but the actual plot isn't all that special. It's a strong character piece for the main protagonist, in that it guides the player sympathetically through his increasing display of sociopathy, but other than that, it just doesn't really have many moving or thought-provoking scenarios. It honestly felt like the typical by-the-number apocalyptic flick, but admittedly, the way Naughty Dog presents the story is very, very good. Add to that the wonky "stealth" mechanics, and it shouldn't be that difficult to see why some aren't as smitten with it. So, sure, we can debate whether it was fair for Polygon to deconstruct the game that way, but to pawn it off as "Sony bias"? Come onnnnnn. I appreciate that they brought another perspective and ultimately elevated the discourse.

Polygon reviews = Miley Cyrus twerking

There's no such thing as bad publicity.

We're all just feeding the machine here...

I don't know if Polygon is really just doing it for attention, but those who are opposed to them are only helping them by pointing it out.

But, I honestly do have to call into question anyone's judgement who's quick to call someone else "biased" because they disagree with them.
but you're missing the point. i'm not calling them biased because i disagree with a review. i'm concerned their biased because they consistently rate specific games very low, and that specificity is almost always related to sony exclusives.

you keep trivializing the pattern, and acting like we complain about each review in a vacuum. if they disliked dragon's crown (65), so be it. if they disliked ni no kuni (65), so be it. If they disliked Kilzone Merc, so be it. If they were underwhelmed by TLOU, so be it.

But when they're consistently underrating games with such a specific criteria (highly hyped/lauded Sony exclusives) and consistently giving it the lowest or second lowest review on metacritic, and within said reviews docking points that they don't dock other games for... then yes, people will notice and complain.

And of import - we're not just talking about a 5 point sway or something. We're talking about 60/65 reviews in a industry that we all know often gives garbage games 7s.

Do I think Mass Effect 3 deserved Poly's 10? No. Do I think the obviously unfinished Tomb Raider deserved a 9? No. But whatever, I don't mind if I disagree with a review.

But this isn't 'disagreeing with a review'. This is noticing a distinct and consistent pattern. Huge difference. Now, sure, it might be completely random chance. Absolutely, might just be random chance. Or, we can follow the money in an industry known to be corrupt.

If they rated every big 3ds game say, 20 points lower than average, you can be sure we'd be hearing about that, too. But they don't.

I had no idea you could take screenshots on the PS3.
You can't natively, so that's why you don't know about it. It's an option that developers can enable like custom soundtracks, video recording, and some other features. I haven't checked for it in a while, but the early way it was implemented required you to push the PS button, go over to the pictures tab, and then click the Screenshot option that only appears for games that support it. It's much nicer when games offer that directly within the game than doing it in that clunky way.

Any idea if/when Assassins Creed Liberation is coming to PsN?

Just grabbed it for 19.99 like new on amazon and debating if its worth it.

No way of knowing, but I'm pretty sure a console version was just confirmed the other day.  We'll know for sure on Tuesday.

Not that that has anything to do with your question.

This sounds harsh but reviewers shouldn't hesitate giving a game a low score because of Metacritic. Ideally they have to take the game as a whole and not worry about outside factors like whether the dev will get a bonus check. Developers know how the industry runs so they shouldn't go into it expecting an extra check either. At the end of the day this industry is a business and companies care about the bottom line.

And yes, PR and reviewers should be completely separate. The video game industry has no problem mixing business with pleasure and they should be more restrictive in that regard. I do appreciate the media sites with full disclosure that giveaway all their swag so not all are greedy or necessarily corrupt.

As for free trips, all forms of media companies do it. Movie companies will fly movie journalists to their sets for previews and interviews. Music studios will fly journalist to listening/launch parties. They give them access to coverage that way and I'm sure it's to help sway the journalists. I'm not saying it's right, but it's definitely not unique to the games industry.
