Ok I was wrong. Shipwreck is just as MS biased as Cheapy and Wombat. Based on his twitter rants today. LOL.
I'm going to regret posting this, but I'd love to know where Microsoft brand loyalty comes from. The 360 is a fine product, but I don't know what Microsoft has been doing for their customers in recent years. It's pretty easy for me to point at what Sony has been doing right for me between the IGC, PS+ discounts, vita design w/ remote play, etc - I just genuinely don't know what actively draws people in to Microsoft's warm bosom.

Lack of brain cells.

MS loyalty really is mind blowing, I dont even think Apple loyalty/fangirls are as bad.

Honestly, I think it has less to do with what Microsoft has done right, and more within at Sony used to do wrong. If you ask diehard Microsoft fanboys why they're so in love with the 360, almost all of the answers are going to be about things that are at least 4-5 years old. My cousin is like this, and whenever I try to explain why I lean towards Sony, I usually get "Well at least XBL has never been hacked." Unfortunately for Sony, a lot of people think like this. Fortunately for us, they're always trying to prove those people wrong by doing awesome things that we benefit from.

I just like the 360s communication and messaging system better than PS3. And the online feels better. Don't hate on me though as I love both. I am actually thinking that the PS4 is going to greatly improve on what I believe the ps3 lacks. Two weeks!

As for exclusives PS3 has way more.

yeah its always

-XBL never got hacked (which I heard they did just not as long/big)

- 360 WAS cheaper(another past thing)

- 360 WAS selling more

Then a bunch of opinionated things like better exclusives,  better online play, etc

One thing that Sony does that I just feel never gets enough attention is their growing support for indie games.and in turn, I don't think Microsoft gets enough criticism for how hard they make the development process for some of these smaller developers.

Dont forget the auto updates and auto uploads to cloud saves. I love that on PSN.

Most Microsoft fanboy responses about that are that indie games suck.

Most of my friends game on the 360 and they always use the hacking incident as why Sony sucks. I had a friend whose had 4 Xbox 360s in his house. Out of those 4 machines they were sent back a total of 13 times with the RROD. The same friends launch PS3 just died this year. I think Sony has learned from this last generations problems.

As someone that uses his 360 more than PS3, I can say it's about convenience. If I want to chat with friends or play games with them, it's far easier to connect on 360 than PS3. Also my wife often games with me and the fact that she can sign in on her own profile and get achievements is a big reason why I tend to game on that machine over PS3.

That being said, I'm getting a PS4 eventually because they've added all the things I've listed, so Sony has won me over. But right now I'm in the Microsoft camp for the time being.

Likely true. It seems like a lot of PS+ subscribers like to complain about getting indie freebies because they want the multi-million dollar AAA titles for free - like there's more 'value' to them making their subscription/account more valuable. Plus, those indie games are like 3 cents on Steam so they're overpaying for PS+.

Thanks to Sony I've played a ton of cool indie games I would've never bothered with - and some really shitty ones - but that's been one of the coolest benefits of backing Sony lately. I'm stoked as fuck that we get resogun and contrast for ps4.

Edit: Ohh, that's why I don't get the Microsoft thing. It's because I don't have friends that I play with regularly? I never hook up a headset either. That would explain a lot of what I'm missing about what Microsoft brings to the table for the gamer. The hacking thing was a highly publicized (ultimately) non-issue but I think it eventually birthed PS+ when they saw the response to the Welcome Back program so it was really one of the greatest things that happened to Sony + us.

But you aren't being a fanboy, its ok to have a preference.

I think the 360 is better in a variety of ways. One example: my kids can play online on the Xbox together, using their own accounts, at the same time on one Xbox and chat with their friends online together while doing so. For example, playing Minecraft. The PS3 can't do that. We now know that PS4 will allow multiple accounts to be logged in at once, so that's great, but it's unclear if each person can be using a headset. I hope that it can do that, otherwise it will be short in at least one way vs even the 360.

I've been playing my PS3 a lot more than my 360 in the past several months and that's mostly due to the Vita and because I just needed a change. There's good exclusives and the games play well. I think the PS3 is kind of clunky, to be honest, but it plays games.

And Indie games. Definitely Indie. Heck, just Pinball Arcade is one of the key reasons I play PS3.

I just got a PS3 after a few years on the xbox, primarily because I plan to get a PS4 and all the free PS+ games got the better of me.  Two things I haven't gotten used to yet:

1) the UI for the PS3 seems inferior so far compared to the xbox.  I'm sure I'll get used to it in time.

2) lack of AA battery compatibility.  Nothing like running low on juice, or buying a new Move set and having to wait for the batteries to charge up.  On the xbox I just slap in a fresh set of Eneloops and I'm back in action.

The XMB is MUCH slower than the 360's dashboard. The 360 just has a better pool of resources dedicated to the UI.

I personally love that the PS3 controllers don't use batteries. Not only do I hate having to buy them, but it makes me feel like an environmental criminal to keep tossing those things out. Just get an extra long cord and you can charge and play if you're not doing that already.

As a new PS3 owner, I have to say I'm loving the console, I've already made it through:

MGS4, Uncharted 2 and 3, The Last of Us, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, inFamous, Ico

That being said, I love it for exclusives only, I would never purchase any Multi-Plats on the PS3 and I will also be getting a One before a PS4.

I think the whole fan-boy thing needs to die, just be a gamer. Was it really ever N64 Vs. PS? No, at least I never saw anything like that.

Just own all the consoles or the consoles you want to. It's all personal preference. One isn't better than the other.

@Glassghost: Technically what I think caused all the comparisons between consoles and created fanboys was the fact that games werent mulitplatform back then. So there was no preferences or which is better. But I do agree with you. Who cares what consoles or games you play.

I like being able to use Eneloop rechargeable batteries in the the Xbox controllers a lot, as swapping out when they are dead is convenient and means little down time, and it's environmentally friendly too, but generally I haven't had a big problem with the PS3 controllers. At least they hold a charge for quite a while. And yes, there is the USB option in a pinch. If I could just find the USB cable….

Frisky - people are being reasonable. It's frightening.

Anybody know how long the two Corpse Party games will be on sale? I was planning on picking up a PSN card tomorrow, but if the sale is already over with, forget it.

The XMB is MUCH slower than the 360's dashboard. The 360 just has a better pool of resources dedicated to the UI.
I find this to be the exact opposite. Ever since MS changed the dashboard to Metro style and increased the ads, the 360 Dashboard is a huge pain - especially on startup. I can turn on my PS3 and start a game about 2 to 3 times faster than I can on Xbox. That being said, both are much slower than they should be. I might actually be more excited for next gen for simple things like how the operating system functions as much as I am for the next gen games.

I personally love that the PS3 controllers don't use batteries. Not only do I hate having to buy them, but it makes me feel like an environmental criminal to keep tossing those things out. Just get an extra long cord and you can charge and play if you're not doing that already.
Or be like me and have 6 DS3's to rotate with while you play.

Reading the PS4 FAQ, I found a few interesting things on there.

There's a minimum requirement of at least 160 GB for the replacement hard drive, though there's no reason for anybody to stick a smaller HDD in there.

The announced PS4 features not available at launch:

  • Share controller via the internet to assist a friend
  • Suspend/Resume mode
  • Wireless Stereo Headsets support
    Wireless Stereo Headset
  • Pulse Wired Stereo Headset
  • Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset Elite Edition

You'll be able to set the 100 PSN Friends that display on the PS3 if you go over that on PS4. They're working on making sure games and apps on PS3 can support the entire PS4 friends list.

I didn't know that Injustice: Gods Among Us was a PS4 launch title.

It seems to suggest that Gamesharing is over with on PS4. Your account has a primary "Home" console and can login to any other console one at a time, but when your account is logged out, the games you downloaded on that other PS4 aren't available for the console owner to keep playing.

You can charge the DS4 when the PS4 is off, though EU people have to enable that option first. You can output game audio through a headset plugged into the DS4. You can text chat with PS3 users, but not video chat. Party chat works across PS4 and Vita.

The DS4's upgrade motion controls allow you to do text input by just pointing the controller at the screen, which sounds like the way Wii handled text input.

No media server support at launch is a big disappointment for me.

You get 1 GB of cloud storage for saves on PS4, which means 3 GB total amongst all three platforms.

The PS Blog just posted this epic FAQ about the PS4.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/10/30/ps4-the-ultimate-faq-north-america/

As someone excited to pick it up day 1, I read the whole thing. No big surprises. I am annoyed that it won't read audio CDs, though. It's not something I would use all of the time, but seriously how hard is it to add this feature?
I don't think it's about how hard it is to add, but whether the cost is worth it in 2013.

So, here's some rumor fodder. When you purchase digital Puppeteer (as a number of you have), it has the cross buy 'Choose a version' button (like Sound Shapes has for example) on the page instead of the 'Download to PS3' button.

hrmmmm....
I want to say that I've seen that on PS3-only games before, usually after a stint on PS+ that created a weird different version thing despite being able to get either.

I think first impressions often stick and Sony did itself no favors with the launch of the PS3. The console's initial price and the way it was marketed was a complete disaster. A lot of my friends really got behind the 360 because of this and never looked back. No matter what I say to them today about the PS3 and the benefits of PS+ it just blows right over their head because they made up their mind a long time ago.

no dlna, no audio cds, no mp3s

so half of what i use my ps3 for isnt currently in the ps4. thats... less than ideal.

also no custom soundtracks in games (except with a fucking music unlimited subscription). just fuck that right up that nose.

Definitely the case with me. The hubris of the PS3 launch was disgusting, and it made me write them off completely despite being a lifetime PS1/2 owner forever. It wasn't until Demon's Souls that I put it aside and bought the reasonably priced slim model with Valkyria and Souls.

I've never owned a 360 because the only big exclusive was Halo and that series has been awful since Halo 2.

I've been saying this for a while. Another huge benefit for the PS3 is not only the built in bluray player, but the fact that you can use apps like Netflix and Hulu without having to pay an additional annual fee. More casual gamers who are looking for a system to be both a gaming system and a media hub would have a huge advantage to choose PS3, even though I'm sure most of them go with the 360. Every media-related thing they'll want to do on the 360 is going to cost them another $60 per year.

And anyone who says the 360 UI is better than the PS3 one is insane in my book. Since the "metro" updates on 360 the dashboard is pakced with ads, everything useful is buried behind several layers, and the initial bootup is slow as fucking molasses. The Xbox 360 dashboard has consistently gotten worse with every update.

Like i said before, I don't own a 360 so my only experience with the dashboard was early on when my friends would bring it over to my place. If the new 'metro' thing you guys are mentioning is that bad then there's no excuse for it.

I could deal with the other issues if it just wasn't so miserably slow.

Ironically, after my 360 ban I was no longer able to connect to the internet, and my dashboard booted up literally 20x quicker.

I like the 360 UI in theory, but something did seem to go awry over the past year or so of updates - I understand Microsoft was/is going through a global UI branding strategy of some sort between Windows Phone/Win 8/Xbox and that was purportedly the drive behind the changes, but that alone makes me wonder how much sway corporate has over the games division. All that said, their overlay menu (pressing the Xbox button while playing a game or whatever) was always a favorite feature of mine and functioned flawlessly and brilliantly. I've just briefly watched the youtube videos of the UIs for Xbox One and PS4 and they both look fine I guess. I just want it to work and have the least possible number of steps until I'm octodad.

p.s. sorry I took the thread waaay off the rails.

Frisky, do you know if we have to install disc based games prior to playing them on the PS4?

I read the FAQ but the only thing mentioned was that each game is cached (temporary) but if you have to do it every time it would be a pain in the ass. Nevermind, the fact that 8-10 games would fill up the 500GB HDD.

It's easy to add, but there are licensing costs associated with implementing the standard, certifying the product, putting the CD logo on the packaging. They probably decided that the cost/benefit didn't justify including the feature.

Same calculus Nintendo worked through when deciding not to enable DVD movie playback on the Wii.

It says that all physical games have to install, but some will do it in the background while you play them.

Yes, all PS4 Blu-ray Disc games must be cached to the hard drive to ensure a smooth gaming experience. However, certain titles may not require you to wait for the game data to be fully cached before starting gameplay. In order to start playing disc-based games, users will need to insert the game disc into PS4 just like on the PS3 system.

It's obviously the shitton of ads that are immediately streamed to your Xbox on startup that causes the long booting time. When I don't have Xbox Live, I make sure it's not even connected to the Internet.

Thx. That was my interpretation as well. Just wanted a second set of eyes on it to be sure. I guess we will have to be mindful of hdd space. I might just upgrade mine in the spring.

I can't speak for CheapyD or any of those other Microsoft shills, but I think MS/xbox is needed because they bring a different sensibility to the industry. You guys talk about Sony's "indie" love as if Microsoft didn't do it first. And, still, indie devs sell more games on XBLA, lol. I own every iteration of playstation and its portables, but it has its deficiencies. The OS and UI are atrocious (though it has improved).

Before MS, online-play/commerce was virtually non-existent on consoles. Account systems and digital content (with demos, no less)? Who do you think ushered in these things? Hell, Sony JUST gave us a website counterpart to the store. Netflix, lastfm and other media apps...MS brought these to consoles. And what about all of you trophy addicts? Who standardized that? Stuff like custom soundtracks and party chat might seem trivial, but people like it.

I don't think Gold is worth the money, and I don't like the proprietary hardware. I prefer my ps3. But, let's not lose our minds. It's not about the more powerful hardware anymore. This isn't the 80s. Sony can be conservative (and, stubborn) as fuck. The Dualshock has been virtually the same for 15 years. Hubris is why they lost their lead this gen.

I'm still leaning towards picking up a PS4 before anything else, but this DLNA and mp3 business is pure and utter bullshit. Really, it's indefensible.

I'm sorry, but when you charge $50 a year for Xbox Live, and then give me a dashboard that's no lie, 90% ads, you really have some balls. Sony's taken very few steps in improving it's UI, but Microsoft has easily taken 1000 steps backwards since the launch of the original 360.

What am I missing with not knowing what DLNA is? Tons of people are freaking out about it.
It's basically what allows you to make media files accessible on your network and playable from the PS4. For example I have a NAS (network-attached storage) device with all my movies, TV shows, and music. On my PS3 when I go to videos or audio I can play them. No additional work required.
