What am I missing with not knowing what DLNA is? Tons of people are freaking out about it.
People just like to complain when companies take out services that no one uses. Just like when Sony got rid of Linux from the PS3. Also, I don't think that people understand that both the PS4 and XBone are going to launch with some features missing. Because Sony and Microsoft are completely unable to patch their consoles. I actually think it said in the PS4 FAQ: "We will never, ever release a firmware update to add new features in our projected 10 year console lifespan. Ha ha. Jokes on you. You all suck."

And then Microsoft release a statement saying "Sony said everyone sucks? Fine, we say they suck more!"

Anyone else notice you need a one time internet (or mail in for bluray disc) connection to activate bluray+dvd play back on PS4? Why?

Will I be able to watch Blu-ray movies on PS4?

Yes, you will need to download and install PS4’s day-one system software update 1.50, and then activate your Blu-ray Disc video capability with a one-time activation through the internet in order to play Blu-ray Disc films and DVD video content.

What if I’m not able to or don’t want to connect my PS4 system online?

PS4 owners in North America can contact SCEA Consumer Services at (800) 345-7669 to request a Blu-ray activation disc that will be distributed via mail.

Also, I don't think that people understand that both the PS4 and XBone are going to launch with some features missing.
Exactly. I'd be shocked if most of the things that people are overly upset about are not added in with firmware updates by next fall at the latest. They have to focus on making a stable OS with the core features for the launch that does enough to keep people happy for the first few months, but they have a schedule of planned updates post-launch that they can work on once 1.50 is out.

It's not like this happens with every modern console that can do firmware updates.

You guys talk about Sony's "indie" love as if Microsoft didn't do it first. And, still, indie devs sell more games on XBLA, lol.
Are you sure? I don't know about PSN sales, but every developer I've seen post about XBLA sales has indicated sales on XBLA as being very low, most arguing that the cause is oversaturation in the XBLA marketplace (i.e., a flood of too many shitty games keeping people from finding good games that they'd actually buy).

This one in particular comes to mind:

http://www.vg247.com/2011/07/19/steam-revenue-for-zeboyd-games-beat-out-xbox-live-sales-in-just-six-days/

developer of indie RPGs Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World ... made more money in one week on Steam as a $3 bundle, than the months both spent individually on XBL.

compared to the revenue gained being on XBL Indie Games Service for “over a year and a half.”
This could be saying more about Steam (or perhaps about discounted bundles) than it is about XBLA, but I think the implication goes both ways.

Did we just agree on something? If Tyler jumps in and agrees too, we may cause the apocalypse.

XBL Indie Games is not XBLA. XBL Indie Games was botched horribly in several ways, but those games can do well on Steam because they're not treated like second-class citizens compared to every other game on the service.

@captain, I hear what you're saying about the ads and clutter on the dashboard. I'm speaking more to the functionality. The XMB feels sluggish, and if you have lots of media (as I do), it can be a pain accessing it. It just has so many idiosyncrasies I dislike. The way it handles downloads. The store. Background music. When I try to message someone in-game, for instance, everything stutters. Multitasking is nonexistent. Good thing is, the vita nearly fixed all of this. Also, I stream media to my ps3 daily. Tons of people do this. Just like tons of people...listen to podcasts.

@josh1 I meant in comparison to PSN. I think it was team meat who said this when asked why so many devs do the exclusivity thing. Steam obviously blows both out of the water.

@frisky I'm not sure why you say it isn't a "core" feature. I probably use it as much for those purposes as i do to play games. If they plan to patch it in, there's no reason they can't say so. Lol, but, how would mp3 playback de-stabilize an OS? Hell, here I was hoping they'd ADD support for avi, flac, etc... Their intentions seem pretty clear to me, but, I'll wait and see.

So, playing Resident Evil 4 HD for the first time thanks to that last PSN sale. Maybe I still need to get used to it, but wow...the controls are less than desirable. I'm swarmed by fifty pseudo-zombies and it takes a year and a day just to turn around. The aiming takes some doing too. Also, I shouldn't have to shotgun a chainsaw-weilding mad-man ten times just to down him.

I'll give the game another try, but I'm not too impressed thus far.

It's obviously the shitton of ads that are immediately streamed to your Xbox on startup that causes the long booting time. When I don't have Xbox Live, I make sure it's not even connected to the Internet.
I always figured it was my old fat Elite console causing the slowdown. If I had known it all had to do with my internet connection I would have disconnected it a long time ago and just plugged it in whenever I needed to download a game.

@josh1 I meant in comparison to PSN. I think it was team meat who said this when asked why so many devs do the exclusivity thing. Steam obviously blows both out of the water.
I always wonder if Steam really does all that amazing for indie devs. So many people who use Steam never buy anything until games are 50% off or more. Waiting on sales seems much more common than on XBLA/PSN games. With the Humble Bundles and such, there are many people who never buy indie games until they can get them for pennies. So indie devs obviously sale tons more units on Steam but I wonder if their revenue is really all that much higher than what they see from XBLA and PSN.

Not trying to hate on Steam, I think they do a ton of things right when it comes to indie games. Just curious about the that one specific thing.

All I said is that the launch OS is focused on the core features that the OS team can get polished up into a good, stable build for the launch. They've got a roadmap for when they can add the other big features and small stuff that didn't make it, which is where you'll see most of the features that people are obsessing about being added over the next year. Why do they need to specifically state that future firmware updates will address the things that aren't in there right now? Did the PSP, PS3, and Vita not show that there's no need to worry about that stuff? If they don't add MP3 and media server support in the next year, then you can come back here and post the most obnoxious brag post you can come up with.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/174587/Steam_sales_How_deep_discounts_really_affect_your_games.php

It's been a well-documented fact that Steam sales bring in more revenue than many of those games get early on due to the volume of sales that they bring in.

Runic Games CEO Max Schaefer, for instance, tells us that while it's been almost three years since his studio launched Torchlight, Valve's Steam promotions have helped the game maintain healthy sales to this very day.

"We find that we get several thousand percent increases in units and revenue on the days of the Steam sales, and unit sales are usually about double the normal for a few weeks after the sales are over," he says.

This year's Summer Sale (which ended July 22) was particularly noteworthy for Runic, as it helped Torchlight hit its second biggest day ever in terms of overall unit sales -- not bad for a game that came out in October 2009.

Saying the 360's dashboard has as many ads as some people exaggerate makes me wonder "how does this affect anyone?"

Microsoft blitzed the industry at the beginning of this gen.

Exclusive AAA titles? 360

Console online multiplayer that was functional more often than not? 360

Split screen games that people loved? 360

Indie games? 360

Etc. Microsoft killed it at the beginning of the generation where more hardcore gamers (for the lack of a better term) were either not sold on the Wii or willing to burn $600 on a console with no good games at the time, like the PS3 (I did the latter :p).

They simply were in a position to succeed because Sony was so prone to fucking things up, and Sony did that wonderfully a lot of the time. Things like copying the Wii with the failed Move while compared to Kinect's success, the hacking of PSN, the terrible download speeds and install rates of PS3 games, etc. all fueled Microsoft's fire.

Multiplats becoming more prominent this generation and the few exclusives that actually sold consoles being on the 360's side more often than not also helped the system.

So yeah, you may be saying, "I know all of that, why isn't ol' Blabby answering my question?" The reason that people still love the 360? They still actually get games and plenty to play, not to mention, a lot of these people either don't care outside of the games that are multiplayer and where their friends are (Halo, Gears, FIFA, etc.) or are okay with the aforementioned multiplats because it's not like GTA, BioShock, etc. didn't come out on the 360 to play (among other reasons, of course). Exclusives really don't matter this generation in the minds of lots of people.

Wow your post oozes with fanboyism. I have owned both consoles since launch and to say ps3 had no good games early on is just comical.

Wow your post oozes with fanboyism. Not even close I have owned both consoles since launch and to say ps3 had no good games early on is just comical. My favorite game of this generation is Uncharted Drake's Fortune. The PS3 didn't have a game that sell people until 2008 with Metal Gear Solid 4.

With halloween coming up, I was looking through the PS1 classics and noticed Silent Hill 1 and Resident Evil 1-3. Anyone got any recommendations for any of them? Was thinking about getting both Silent Hill 1 and RE 1 just to see how they play

I have to be a dick about this, I'm sorry, but GO LIONS

Unfortunately Frisky only knows what PS+ related sales will be expiring next week. If it's a non-PS+ discount it's best to assume the deal will only last for one week, but there's no way of knowing.

Maybe Frisky can add some sort of caveat to the "Expiring Next Week" section explaining that if it has a red X it's definitely expiring next week, but if it doesn't have a red X it doesn't necessarily mean it won't be expiring next week.
How about the new mini-FAQ I added to the OP to address a few of the bigger questions that always get asked around here?

So, playing Resident Evil 4 HD for the first time thanks to that last PSN sale. Maybe I still need to get used to it, but wow...the controls are less than desirable. I'm swarmed by fifty pseudo-zombies and it takes a year and a day just to turn around. The aiming takes some doing too. Also, I shouldn't have to shotgun a chainsaw-weilding mad-man ten times just to down him.

I'll give the game another try, but I'm not too impressed thus far.
Yeah, I watched some gameplay videos and just couldn't do it when I saw the shitty cursor movement thing for aiming.

I like it, if people actually read it, which is always hard to determine. To me it's worded slightly oddly since you are using "X Game" as the generic term for any game and actually using the letter "X" to denote expiring games.

Maybe something like "Will [blank] game still be on sale next week? It has no red X next to it."

Just my 2 cents. Thanks as always.

Try control scheme 2. If your'e used to modern third person shooters it might help you readjust.

It's either that or you can't appreciate one of the best games ever.

Resident Evil 1 and 2 are classics. RE1 is campy as all hell and downright laughable in its awfulness at times, but it's a classic and one that some may not enjoy when compared to the games of now. RE2 is everything RE1 was but better.

Silent Hill 1 is a real scary game, but a bit more strict in its difficulty when compared to Resident Evil. If you lack patience, it might not be for you. Fatal Frame 1 and 2 are on sale $2 each if you have PS+, and they're classically spooky games as well.

Look up some gameplay vids on the ones you're interested in to see what you think might be up your alley.

It should be much better now.

Looking at my transactions history, it seems that I've spent over 100 dollars. Thus I get 20 dollars back by virtue. Now the question is, what to get with that bonus 20 bucks? ~looks at his first option Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires~

Ok thank you for letting me know! I haven't played any of the old RE's but I've heard people say they're much better than the ones being released today. After watching the trailer for RE 1, I might skip that one, it's looking pretty crappy. I'll prob end up getting RE 2 and 3 and possibly Silent Hill

I'm not sure how well they'll hold up, especially if it will be your first time playing them and you won't have the benefit of nostalgia clouding your judgment, but since it saves you $4 (!) I would recommend picking up RE 2 instead of 1. Not too much backstory to miss out on and the general consensus would be that it's the best in the original trilogy.

Hmm, it says you get a "minimum" of 1 point per $1 you spend on PSN, which equates to 1 cent per $1.  Not much, but I guess it helps a little, bringing you to 11% if you stack it with the PS credit card... or close to 31% if you buy exclusively during the cash-back promos.

Journey worth $15? (I know I'm late to the party)
A beautiful experience, but I could see the price drop in the future if it hasn't already done so before.

I wish both teams had lost somehow, but I hate the Cardinals more than I do Bawston so good for them I guess. Happy that Napoli got away from our stinking garbage shit cheater base to get a ring, though. Solid dude.

Go Cowboys/Mavs.

Anybody know how long the two Corpse Party games will be on sale? I was planning on picking up a PSN card tomorrow, but if the sale is already over with, forget it.
Despite what that other guy said a few pages back, they are still on sale for $9.99 each and should not go off sale till Tuesday afternoon at the earliest.

No, wait for a sale (its been on sale several times) or if you don't have Flower try and find a good deal on the disc version, Journey Collectors edition which comes with Flower and Fl0w as well as some exclusive Journey special features. It's $20 currently on amazon but can probably be found for cheaper around black Friday.

Oh oh I love talking afoul the classic survival horror games! Yes I'd avoid resident evil 1. It's aged horribly. I still love it, but 2 and especially 3 are tremendously better. If your looking for story points on ps3, the umbrella chronicles is probably your best bet(especially if you have the move), but really, you aren't missing much.

wether or not the classic resident evils are better than the new ones simply comes down to your specific taste. They are ALL great games despite whatever people say. They are well made. People's opinions just differ so much because the latest installments stray from the classic gameplay and survival horror aspect. I love them all, but you can't go wrong with the classics. Each game bring something different to the table, I think that's why I love this particular zombie franchise the most. There's a slew of great characters and varying gameplay.

2 is my all time favorite resident evil. 3 is an under rated gem IMO. mostly because it's very similar to 2, in that it takes place in the same city scenario, but the gameplay is much better and the nemesis creature presents an amazing pursuer. He's always after you! You have to give the older games some real time. Get used to the controls and the ways about them. The tank controls are very difficult to get the Hang of at first, but give it a few hours, it will become second nature.

Fatal frame 1 and 2 are also great, a great alternative survival horror game. It's slow as well but give it some time, the controls are great for these ones. It's arguably the scariest of the lot to be honest. It's quite tense and different.

Silent hill is tough for me, it's also great but it's hard to get into IMO. Ive never felt the urge to replay any silent hills. Though I've replayed resident evil 2 and 3 a handful of times in the past 10 years alone. (Usually every other Halloween!)

I know I Am Alive got sort of disappointing reviews, but does the sale make it easier to swallow? I don't have PS+ so I'd be paying $6.

Also, have the Fatal Frame games aged well? I've never played them but for the price, I keep thinking I should.

Get plus. Seriously. Besides that, I plan on picking all of them up, along with Siren. Should keep me occupied for a while.

I'm still not sure why you think mp3 playback and local media streaming fall outside the realm of core features. Simply because you don't use them? Obviously enough of a shitstorm was raised that someone from Sony responded (albeit vaguely). This is a $400 multimedia device that cannot play the most rudimentary of file types.

Neither one us knows exactly why they've made these omissions, but it's pretty damn naive to suggest "OS stability". I mean. What?

As far as the update timeline, why do they explicitly mention other forthcoming features while saying absolutely nothing about this, lol? And the blind PS3 updates are a bad comparison since they probably added most of that stuff as they went along.

I certainly hope they patch these things in, but I won't believe it was always a part the plan. If we can freely criticize Microsoft here for their supposed anti-consumer policies, we should be able to do the same to Sony. It's all love. :)

I hate you so much.

No. At this point wait for a sale. People seem to think it was an awesome experience, but it's really not that awesome of a game when it comes down to the gameplay. It's a simple 2-3 hour platformer.

I wish both teams had lost somehow, but I hate the Cardinals more than I do Bawston so good for them I guess.
Yeah I hate them both very much. It was tough to watch because someone had to win. I was enjoying all the shots of miserable Cardinals players, but then Fox went and ruined it by showing happy Boston players.

I Am Alive setting and look was cool, and for the most part gameplay was ok. However, that damn stamina bar really ruined the fun and at times made restarting at checkpoints unbearable. Eventually it just became unplayable, especially in large areas outside buildings where you had to use up a lot of stamina. They just seemed to forget to make the game fun to play.

Noobie question for you guys. I just recently got a ps3. Its a 80 gb model. Its not backwards compatible. If I download the ps2 classics will they work since they are download games or can this unit not work on ps2 at all?
The downloadable PS2 games on PSN are software emulated and will work on your PS3. Whether they will play 100%, I can't say for certain...but if not that would only be because of a lack of testing on Sony's part.

Personally I think so, but I'm partial to arthouse indie games so I can't say for sure how you would enjoy it.

From a CAG perspective it has been on sale several times and the disc can be found for close to the same price, so there isn't any particular reason to suddenly buy it now unless you are dieing to play it. I wouldn't be surprised to see it added to PS+ sometime in the future as well if you have it.

I was completely taken by surprise by the backlash from the whole mp3/streaming thing - maybe Sony was genuinely surprised too. It's not like they have a little background process on the ps3 that records what everyone does on their systems (do they?). They really seem like they're trying to reverse that image of arrogance from the PS3 launch and at least kinda listening to consumers and reacting accordingly to things lately (DRM, HDMI out recording, love of indies, continuation of free games on to PS4, etc) so I'd give them time.

If I were to make a wild guess, I expect the simplest answer is probably the most likely - they were looking for ways to cut costs to hit $400 and skipping media features to avoid licensing MP3 or DLNA or whatever tech was agreed upon in a conference room because it both helps promote their music/video services and cuts per system costs. It's a good business decision for them if they expected not enough people would care.

But I'm to this day surprised to learn that people still pirate movies/mp3s, so what do I know.

The FAQ made it pretty clear that MP3, CD and DNLA were left out on purpose, and they had no intent of adding it. The PS4 does NOT play MP3s. Etc. It wasn't - this feature will be added in a future update. To play music on the PS4 you *have* to pay for their streaming service. They state that clearly. It's simple as that - an attempt at another revenue stream. Now if there's enough of a backlash I'm sure they'll change their minds. Myself, I have never once played an audio CD or MP3, or streamed anything to the PS3. However I have copied a couple movies over to it. The omissions aren't a big deal to me, especially the music. I play that on my stereo (have a computer hooked up to it).
