You joke now, but Xbox One is actually adding achievements for watching TV
I'm very curious of the Xbox One ecosystem. They seem poised to be second fiddle to Sony in this generation, for now. I mean, I like their vision and a lot of the stuff they were going to do originally. But, at this point, a lot of us are heavily invested into PlayStation brand, especially digitally. And they are just tearing it apart in their consumer approach.

Puppeteer Metacritic: 82

Polygon score: 60

Interesting.
Yeah, I'm done with them on reviews. Here's Phil Kollar on Mercenary:

Occasionally awkward controls and convoluted map design aside, it accomplishes the goal of seeming like a big, fun, explosion-packed, AAA shooter. But that's it.
It's exactly the sentiment I was so angry seeing when I saw multiple complaints of that nature. But Gone Home is definitely a 10 and deserved 3 articles by editor's on "what that game meant to them".

Puppeteer Metacritic: 82

Polygon score: 60

Interesting.
I know they have an editor review the game and then a review board that determines if the score is correct (people who haven't played or completed the game deciding the score...interesting) but in regards to their Sony bias, maybe it's a journalist by journalist case? I liked the idea of Polygon of bringing in the very best editors of former sites to make this "super gaming site". Now, I see the spare post by them and the rest of the site being run by unknowns. Still, their articles are better written than those on Kotaku/Joystiq.

Make no mistake, MS truly believes that in couple of years they will convince the world that when they walk into their respective homes they will want their TV to tell them if they have unread email, box scores, and what TV will be recorded that evening. They think that's more important than playing videogames. It really can do all of that stuff, too. Sony thinks that it's more important to win the short game of being an amazing game console and when sentient televisions are fashionable that the technology to make it happen will be easy and accessible to big companies like them.

Man, Galaga Legions feels like a poor man's Super Stardust. Nearly fell asleep before the first wave was finished. Shame, too, because I love Pacman DX. And hadn't even heard of Puppeteer before today. What an incredibly sharp and imaginative looking game.*

*polygon review was critical as fuck , though, lol. not helping my case. breakfuss am sad.
Haha I've actually been checking once a day for the Polygon review to go up. Funny that you of all people were the first one to notice and mention it in this thread. But it sounds like we can agree on how lame Galaga Legions DX is, if you almost fell asleep during the first wave. It's a homeless person's Super Stardust HD. It sucks.

I'm sitting this one out *grabs popcorn*
I can't imagine there's a whole lot for anyone to say. The biggest proponent of the "Polygon is not biased and you're all paranoid" stance is the one who pointed out the atypically low review score.

EDIT: But yeah, fuck Polygon.

We're Putting You On Suicide Watch!
- You watched the entire first season and the premiere of season two in one sitting...without inserting forks into your eyeballs.

Difficulty from PS3T: 10/10
I hate these kind of posts (the one I'm doing), but that was absolutely fuck ing hilarious. "We're putting you on suicide watch!" is perfect!

I'm tempted to get Aliens: Colonial Marines for $8 despite the awful reviews for it. Maybe I should wait for a $5 physical copy on Black Friday. For a game like this I can see it happening.
If someone offers you $8 to play Aliens: Colonial Marines, you should turn them down and be insulted that they think your time is worth so little.

Seriously, the game is broken. Aliens don't feel like aliens. They feel more like cardboard cutouts racing at you in a carnival booth game.

RE: Mindy -- I LOVE this show. Mostly because when it's on my wife watches it and I'm free to read or play vita or whatever.

achievements for watching tv... can only lead to achievements for watching commercials. i am so glad i'm not in any way vested into that ecosystem. i feel gross just thinking about the ramifications.

about to plat NLKS --

final thoughts.

way too easy overall, but it's a nice casual kingdom builder. i love some of the concepts (30 unit army made up of everything from lumberjacks to soldiers to doctors to wizards), all decked out in custom outfits... but in practice that just means spamming them all at some lone enemy. the lack of tactics in a game absolutely begging for tactical combat is sad... but again, speaks to its casual roots.

the trophies are absurdly tedious. i've had a rubber band on my vita all day. (spoiler for length, not really content)

no, i'm not kidding. one trophy requires all 7 princesses to 'love' you... but you can only really accomplish this at the end of the game (post-quests) by hanging out with each for several hours. ridiculous.nothing, however, will ever top my least favorite trophy of all time - find 30 people in your kingdom that will teach you songs to hum. i know this sounds bad, but it's worse that you can imagine.

overall... meh? i think my wife would have enjoyed it more than me. it was just too casual. it has the illusion of fun, but the mechanics just don't measure up.

I can't imagine there's a whole lot for anyone to say. The biggest proponent of the "Polygon is not biased and you're all paranoid" stance is the one who pointed out the atypically low review score.
wait, gettinmoney isn't breakfuss. gettinmoney is a anti-poly unicorn.

Glad everyone was able to have fun at my expense tonight over my Mindy download. And yeah, I tried Galaga DX and it does indeed suck. It is an ugly game too unlike their gorgeous and sylized pac-man championship dx.

I guess you guys were right about the oled vitas being the better sku. This Japanese guy managed to get a comparison pic. The bezel isn't doing the new model any favors, either.

Chrono Trigger? No way. This battle system is like if Chrono Trigger and Earthbound had a retarded kid. They took all the skills from Chrono Trigger, just changed the names. There's no ATB, no dual/tri skills as far as I've seen in my first hour. Not really seeing elements playing a big part in battles either, as I haven't seen a single elemental skill from Ogden or any of the monsters yet.

I'm a little disappointed. So many things are just recycled from the first game. From the skills, to the "witty" phrases that enemies shout at you during battles. Menu system is almost entirely the same, except now there's a tab for quest info.

Unless you LOVED the first one, then avoid the second until there's a crazy sale. More like Book I.5. If I was a Polygon write, I'd give it a 2/10. Since I'm not paid by Microsoft though...6/10 so far.
The battle system being that you run into enemies on the map and fight them right there with Earthbound's ability to lure enemies away from the group to make a potentially bigger fight easier.

Ogden never cast elemental spells in the first game, so I don't know why you'd expect him to all of a sudden have them in Book II. He just had heal and antidote before. Of course they'd have some of the same things from the first game, it's a sequel. To each their own, though.

It took me a few seconds to figure out the perspective of that pic.

As a current Vita owner, I'm obviously not the target market for the new Vita model, but if they can get the retail price low enough to get the Vita into more hands than it's a win for me since anything that expands the user base can only help to bring new games to the system that I can play on my current Vita. And as we have seen for the past couple weeks, there isn't a company out there that wouldn't love to increase margins and sell more product.

I also think that if you were to buy the cheap Vita model and take it home where you don't have another Vita to compare it to you'll find the LCD screen to be perfectly fine. It won't be the best but without a side by side comparison hopefully you won't be nit-picking about screen quality since you'll be too busy enjoying some games. If it's the only Vita in the house then by default it's the best looking one.

That said, the LCD screen does look like it needs a color adjustment but that may just be the way the light hits the new screen surface.

so if u have 4GB card, can u play it?

3GB Download + patch 1.2GB
As others mentioned, you can't play the digital version of killzone from a 4gb card. I think they even put a warning on the store stating that an 8gb card was the minimum required. I'm using the cart anyways (the only copy left at my best buy).

...eww. Time to watch for the original vita to go on sale on black friday or something to secure myself a backup when mine eventually dies lol.

I was thinking about purchasing the new Vita version but didn't realize that the difference between OLED and LCD screens would be so drastic. If a good original Vita deal pops up on Black Friday, I might have to jump on it. Been stockpiling these free PS+ Vita games so might as well actually play them.

Well, my understanding is that it's a different color space. So you're taking a game optimized for OLED's color space and displaying it on an LCD screen. Shouldn't this be fixable via a patch? I mean I agree that looks bad, but the colors on my iPhone 4 look great. Definitely no yellow cast or anything of that sort.

For me, and probably a bunch others, it's just the simple fact that we've been spoiled by the great picture on the OLED so it's hard to go backwards to an inferior screen. It's just like when I thought 720p was the greatest thing ever to happen to gaming. Now I'm gaming in 1080p and anything 720p looks bad to me haha. Not that 720p is bad by all means, it's just I've been spoiled with 1080p

So basically, for new perspective vita owners, which they are obviously shooting for, the screen will probably look just fine to them as long as games are optimized for that screen. Us original vita owners will always think it looks crappy in comparison though lol.

There's some Grade 5 and 6 Wi-Fi Vitas for $120+ tax on Cowboom's deal of the day for anyone looking for an OLED one.  I had a grade 6 without any cables in my cart, saw a Grade 5 with the cables, and used another browser to snag it.  I just released the grade 6 back into the wild.

A counter argument to the LCD vs. OLED debate:

That makes the LCD look better, so it may depend on the game. Or maybe it depends on the bias of the person taking the picture. ;)

Yes, I see the glare, thus bias, but the LCD pic looks great. Color is sharp.

It also depends on the lighting and the amount of fingerprints on your device as well according to those 2 pictures haha. Not really a good comparison shot to be honest.

Edit: I see you edited it right after I started this post haha. So you see what I mean.

Yeah, but I think the LCD will look great too, and that pic seems to show that. My iPhone 4 has an LCD screen and it looks fantastic. So I think this OLED vs. LCD thing is overblown. As long as they didn't go too cheap on the display, the LCD should look great too. Maybe black isn't quite as black. I don't know. Black looks like black on my iPhone, so maybe my eyes just aren't uber enough. LOL.

Puppeteer Metacritic: 82

Polygon score: 60

Interesting.
I understand why people find it unsettling, but, again, they just seem to grade everything more critically. They're like the Pitchfork of games, lol. Wonderful 101 recently received a 6 as well. I've just sort of grown annoyed at the strain of paranoia surrounding the gaming media. Might have unfairly taken that out on @affa, but you have to understand I grew up on this stuff. EGM, PSM, Nintendo Power, etc...they were just as important to me as the "content creators". Heck, even now I spend more time reading and talking about games than I do playing.

I can't imagine there's a whole lot for anyone to say. The biggest proponent of the "Polygon is not biased and you're all paranoid" stance is the one who pointed out the atypically low review score.
All praise to the mighty Polygod. But, seriously, even though I enjoy some of their features (they actually wrote one of the most scathing editorials during the whole Microsoft DRM fiasco), I am not defending their reviews. I just don't think they're biased. They failed to mention Puppeteer's price, which I think should be considered. The game also appears to be very ambitious. It's enough for me to pick it up, but ehhh, to each his own.

An iphone also cost 3x-4x as much as a vita.

It sounds like this display switch is working. Everybody is buying a 2nd OLED Vita and clearing out the stock they couldn't otherwise sell. LOL.

The LCD screen doesn't look significantly worse, just different. Id rather see a vibrant game like Rayman to show off a comparison, I think with those bright colors it might be more noticeable. At least, it doesn't look like it will be a night and day difference on the new model.

Damn, I thought the 75% off with GTAV pre-order sale was limited to one game, but that does not appear to be the case.  Guess I'll be adding some more PS2 classics to the pile.

I believe Ogden had "blastios" in the first game, which was a fire spell. In book II he does get both a fire and ice slash area skill (this is in reference to the comment you quoted). I don't know if he will get any more, since I'm in another part of the game. I'm enjoying it so far, but it can get a little choppy on the Vita. I also managed to crash the game once, lol.

Looks like I will just keep my extra brand new Vita that I was trying to sell. I figured the $90 I spent on it as a back up will never happen again since the new model was announced.

That website where I purchased it was one of the best for deals for the Vita during launch. Sorry I can't post website name as CAG doesn't like the site plus they sold out a long time ago.

Nobody can beat Brand New Vitas for $90 and 3DS XL for $60.

Damn it, i thought this conversation died.

1) I grew up reading all of those too.

2) You don't bite the hand that feeds.

We are talking about a multi-billion dollar industry in which all of the major review sites earn their revenue through ads sourced by the big players.

Let's talk movies for a second.

Did you know Sony got busted (and heavily fined) for faking an entire movie reviewer for several ads?

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/flatter-to-deceive-sony-pays-out-for-fake-film-reviews-6162441.html

But I'm sure all the 'real' movie reviewers are trustworthy... right? I mean, nobody would ever give a piece of trash 5 stars just so their name and brand would get national exposure in ads, right?

Glad everyone was able to have fun at my expense tonight over my Mindy download. And yeah, I tried Galaga DX and it does indeed suck. It is an ugly game too unlike their gorgeous and sylized pac-man championship dx.

I guess you guys were right about the oled vitas being the better sku. This Japanese guy managed to get a comparison pic. The bezel isn't doing the new model any favors, either.
I'm upset that I paid money for Galaga, not because it's free but because it could have been so much better. Also because it's free.

Sony's original iterations of their products are works of art. The PS2, PS3 and Vita are all gorgeous hardware, the "upgraded" products are ugly. That's why it's worth paying extra for a launch model.

I think the slim PS2 and PS3 are much prettier than the originals. Super slim, you may have a point though.

That makes it look better because someone used a flash on the OLED screen...

If you look at the actual picture instead of that sad gif it's just like the RO one with one vita on top of the other. However the original vita is on top and angled really badly so the flash hits it. Either the person sucks at taking photos, which is entirely possible, or it was done on purpose.

Regardless it's a pretty sad representation. Even more sad is the fact IGN even used the picture in their article. Way to go IGN :p

I also don't know why so many people are trying to defend the LCD screen online and saying it's just as good etc. It's a simple fact that one screen is better with newer tech than the other, can't get around that lol. It's not like there's been leaps and bounds in LCD technology or something.

A picture of the screens viewed on a computer will rarely if ever be an accurate representation of the differences in the screens. I highly doubt it will be that drastic of a change.... plus my oled little black splotches it gets during a black screen bother me so having an LED instead might be an improvement at least in that regard.

Just going to remind everyone that If they're switching to LCD they're doing it to cut production costs so do you really think they're using a top end LCD in it?  We already know that they feel screen quality is expendable enough to drop the OLED.  The LCD might look perfectly fine but that doesn't mean it's the same.

Man, Galaga Legions feels like a poor man's Super Stardust. Nearly fell asleep before the first wave was finished. Shame, too, because I love Pacman DX.
I don't know if you're just name dropping Super Stardust as an example of a dual-stick shooter to compare it to, but there's not much similar between the two outside of the controls.

I'll drop some critical thoughts about why Galaga Legions isn't as good as the Pac-Man Championship Edition games:

The thing that really makes a big difference between the two revival series is that the Pac-Man CE games are designed around the things that were core concepts of the original games while the Galaga Legions games seem to be going in a different direction than the original Galaga games did.

The original Pac-Man games were all about the strategy of the routes you took around the maze to get all of the pellets, power pellets, and fruit while avoiding the ghosts to get through the game as efficiently as possible. Pac-Man CE and DX build upon that same strategy with the added effect of the score multipliers/combos, time limits, the maze transformations, and the bombs that adds some more good layers to that formula.

I'm not as big of a fan of Galaga as I am of Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, but the classic Galaga is basically a clone of Space Invaders with its own twists to that formula that basically makes it an early shmup. The core concept is trying to shoot all of the enemies, avoiding those that are flying at you, and trying to survive as long as possible, so you're basically just trying to be as efficient as possible. Galaga Legions changes up a number of those core mechanics so that it's now a dual-stick shooter and you don't need to shoot all of the enemies, as you just need to shoot the boss alien that's usually hidden in the hordes of aliens that try to swarm you. They try to force it into a Pac-Man CE-style structure, but playing it clearly shows that it doesn't work for a shmup without much flexibility to let it be its own thing.

If I had the say, I'd tell them to take a look at what Square Enix/Taito did with Space Invaders to make it a new and exciting experience that builds off of what made that original game so great, as Space Invaders Extreme and Space Invaders Infinity Gene really did some cool things with that game to take it in the two main directions that shook it up in a good way. Extreme took the original concept of the crazy single-screen shooter and went crazy with the art style and all that while Infinity Gene turned it into more of a traditional scrolling shmup with a really cool art style of its own. Shooters evolved a lot in the 30 years since those games came out, so there are lots of things they could inject to make it a more modern experience without changing the core fundamentals of those original games.

The short version: They fucked it up so that Galaga Legions doesn't really feel at all like it's built upon the core fundamentals of what made Galaga a classic arcade game. They nailed that idea with Pac-Man CE and tried to apply that template to Galaga without letting it become its own thing.

A good breakdown of the differences and why one was extremely successful and why the other was a complete floppity doppity.

So I've decided that I need to drastically cut back on my video gaming time and the best way to do that is to stop caring about trophies.  In fact, I'm even going to go so far as to make a new PSN name.

Just wait for a year from now when you realize that you want to care about trophies again and you realize that you have to play all those games over again!

As others mentioned, you can't play the digital version of killzone from a 4gb card. I think they even put a warning on the store stating that an 8gb card was the minimum required. I'm using the cart anyways (the only copy left at my best buy).
You would be correct about the warning. In fact the warning is still there when you bring up description page for the game on the Vita store. I'm usually all for DD but in the case of this game I went ahead and bought the physical copy. I just bought a 32 GB card and have quite a few games on it...one of which is Playstation All-Stars which, thanks to constant patches, ballooned up to nearly three times its original download size. I could see that happening with Killzone considering there was a Day One 1.2 GB update (you know more updates and patches are coming to keep the MP balanced) and any map packs will add to the size as well. Physical copy for the win! At least in this case.

BTW...the game is AWESOME. And it sucks the Vita battery down quickly.

Well, I'm still going to go for trophies that I want to go for. For example, I'll most likely be platinuming Dark and Demon's Souls again, but this is to remove all temptation of going after trophies I don't want to go after. This is going to help me obliterate my game collection.
