mind blown. I had no idea square locked and found tapping frustrating since it requires leaving the sticks. I'll have to give HM another try ...
Square to lock is better than tap to lock, but gunplay still feels really rough. In through chapter 10 and have a couple A+ ratings, but I don't know if I'd ever be able to get A+ on all. Some of the levels would require mixing guns and melee to get high point combos, but I can't get aimed the right way, lift thumb to hit square, re-aim, re-lock fluidly no matter how many times I try :whistle2:(

Maybe it would work better as a dual stick shooter on PS3, but the reticle seems to try to snap to enemies on the Vita and that throws me off.

I'm going to try again with this lock-on option. One of my biggest complaints, aside from the terrible noises the game makes, was that I could never shoot anyone with a gun because I couldn't aim.

Let's try it again.
I had the exact same aiming issue...but there were situations when melee didn't work against a guy with a gun, so I kept dying until I got in lucky shots. This should help, I hope.

If there wasn't a bit of randomness, then the encounters would be less exciting and less rewarding when you do pull off a perfect run on that level. If they all just moved on the same path, had the same exact reactions to what you did, and never veered off that course, it would just be a more of a tedious experience than what it felt like for me with the randomness. You have to be able to think on your feet to react and improvise for how things turn out.
I feel the exact opposite way. If there wasn't randomness, then you could learn from your mistakes and eventually master it. Randomness means luck is involved and beating something because you got lucky isn't rewarding at all.

Also, getting shot from off screen and dying in one shot doesn't give you much time to think on your feet.

You could just throw your weapon at that sort of enemy, then run up to them and take them out before they can get back up.

You can easily learn from your mistakes with the randomness, as you can see how your actions affect things and learn how to react to them. If you go into a room and fire upon a group of enemies, but those remaining don't flinch, then run back out, pause, and take aim on the remaining guys. If they do react and come after you, go back out the door and try to use the door to knock them down and finish them off. Go into the situation with a plan of attack that makes the most of your surroundings since cover and line-of-sight are very important when tackling each level.

Randomness also means you have new opportunities to try new things to see how things turn out. If you really can't tell what the effects of your actions are, then I can't really help you there.

Is this lock on in hotline Miami also on the ps3 version? i might try again. or not. Dont know if my add will kick in again.

Of course, I believe you can use square for a quick lock-on or either R2 or L2 to look around and lock-on to enemies that you're pointing at.

Thanks super low PS+ sale prices. Now I have PvsZ for my Vita too, despite already owning it on XB360 & Android.

That's why you can drag around the screen to check your surroundings.
Doesn't help if they're on random patrols.

All you're talking about is learning game mechanics, which is applicable to every single game.

The way you're describing isn't really random, as you're implying that your actions have an effect on the outcome. What Jay said, is that he does the same thing every time, and it produces different results. If you do something the same way 10 different times, and you get 10 different results, then it's clear that your actions have no effect on the outcome. However, if you do something 10 times and 9 of those times you get the same result, but then maybe 1 time is different, you can plan. That's like saying in a game with randomly generated levels or enemy patterns, you can plan ahead if you die enough times. But you can't, because it's random, and you have no idea what the next time will be.

For example, in Hotline, running into a room with 4 guys, there's no telling if 1 will spot you, none, or all 4. There is nothing you can do to change this. I was stuck at the same spot for a while, going into the room the same way, only to have a different result every time. I forget what chapter it is, but I want to say 5. There's a spot where there are two bat dudes and two gun dudes circling a room. I'd wait until the first gun dude gets close to the door and attempt to bash him and the other gun dude. Same exact entry, every time.

Results:

1. Gun dude A spots me and kills me before I can bash him.

2. Gun dude B spots me and kills me before I can bash him.

3. Gun dude B kills me before I can kill Gun dude A.

4. Neither spots me, and I bash both, but get spotted by Batman (yes he's in this game) A, who kills me.

5. Neither spots me, and I bash both, but get spotted by Batman B, who kills me.

6. Neither spots me, and I'm able to bash Batman A only to be killed by Batman B.

7. Neither spots me, and I'm able to bash Batman B, only to be killed by Batman A.

8. Neither spots me, but I'm able to bash both Batmen and get out of the room.

9. Neither spots me, but I'm able to bash both Batmen, only to be killed by the guy with a shotgun outside the room.

10. Neither spots me, I'm able to kill both Batmen, and the Shottie dude, and clear the level.

11. I don't kill anyone and Shottie dude spots me as soon as I open the door and kills me.

Now I know some will say "Well just kill the guys faster." However, if I'm finishing a bash on one guy, obviously there's a split second delay before I can lay a bash on another guy. By the time I finish the bash, I've been shot or bashed myself. Keep in mind, that I've entered the room the same exact way every single time, and produced at least 11 different results that no preplanning or thinking ahead has an impact on.

Now, as Jay said about the Souls games, most of the time nothing is random. Enemies are in the same spots, if you die, you can plan ahead. You can't plan ahead for something that's random.

Pick a number 1 - 100, and I'll randomly pick a result. You can't say "I picked 75, and it was 29...so planning ahead makes me think to pick 29...WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE NEXT NUMBER IS 47?!"

Only thing you can do is see what random event happens most often, and play hoping that that event occurs.

Edit: Also, Jay, sorry if I misunderstood what you were saying.

Edit 2: I think that was the first non-sarcastic post I've made in this thread in a good 6 months.

What are people's opinions on the PS+ required for multiplayer on PS4? Seems like most of you have it, but is this a good or bad direction for Sony to take?

Just got a vita. So I have ps+. What else do I need to get??
Some type of grips. Best $4 I've spent in a long time.

It's a good move. I hate to toot my own horn (no I don't) but it was pretty easy to see this coming. Get people used to paying a subscription fee with PS+ and then lock multiplayer behind it for next gen. I'm remaining cautiously optimistic that the PS+ games remain fairly high caliber, but seems possible that their quality and/or quantity dips over time.

I'd bet the single highest revenue source for Xbox 360 was all the Xbox Live fees they were raking in. Hopefully Sony can duplicate that somewhat.

Fine. Hotline Miami sucks. Sony's pissed on the Vita once again.

The situation I described was the same situation where you did the same thing and got two different outcomes, so how is that not random?

Thanks for explaining the exact situation that you're talking about. I just started up that level to see what exactly you guys were talking about by casing the joint first. It's the NE room where there are two melee guys behind a desk with two gunmen circling the room. In this situation, I'd use the door to take out the gunmen one at a time and make sure to have the door between me and the guys inside as much as possible because that's always a good strategy in Hotline Miami. The horse mask makes door hits a one-hit kill to make that an easy strategy. Another strategy is to knock them out and take their gun if it falls within reach so they couldn't pick it up when they get up, which means less guns and you can kind of play with the aggro mechanic to lure the enemies out one or two at a time to make an overwhelming situation much easier to grasp.

I played it a few times to see how it played out and it definitely can go a few different ways. It took me a few tries to beat all four men, which has me knocking out the two gunmen and one of them ran away from his gun to grab a knife that spawned in that room. I waited for one of the gunmen to return by the door and took him out, which prompted two of the remaining guys to run at the door and I killed both with the crowbar I had, leaving the knife guy last and I just bumrushed him to take him out. Besides that scenario, knocking the gunmen out usually caused them to take new, random paths around that room, which made it a little harder to find a good place to jump into the fray.

There's another room like that upstairs and the two gunmen are not circling the room, so I mainly played with drawing aggro of one guy at a time to take out a gunman and melee guy and the other gunman was just walked around. I then threw a bat at him, knocked him up against a wall and finished him off. That left another guy just standing around since he had not seen the antics I just pulled since there is a big pillar/wall in the middle of the room. I just moved around the wall while locked-on and threw a bat at him to knock him out for the easy kill.

There were definitely some random elements, but the goals of what you want to do with each room are the same each time. Enemies may react differently, but when you know and understand the mechanics and the general idea of what enemies are likely to do, the randomness doesn't really change much of what you still have to do to take them all out. It may sound pretentious or whatever, but there's not much more to it. Play smart and you can start to see what sort of strategies work for the different situations you'll see, especially since you'll likely play each scenario out at least a few times each. It gives you a lot of practice.

Now, going back to what you're saying with the second bold point. I'd advise against doing a finishing kill when enemies are in the same room, as you're just asking for them to give you a quick death. Pick on one guy at a time and draw them away from the crowd if possible to make the situations easy to handle rather than trying to play it like an action game and take everybody on at once. You've got the time to assess and evaluate what's going on, so you don't need to rush it unless that's your style.

What are people's opinions on the PS+ required for multiplayer on PS4? Seems like most of you have it, but is this a good or bad direction for Sony to take?
Many of us here have had PS+ for a long time and don't really plan to let it lapse, so the PS4 situation changes nothing for us. We get the games we've been getting and we continue to have access to multiplayer as a bonus for us since that's not what we got the subs for in the first place.

Ha Ha

I have it on iOS, Android, Xbox 360, PC, PS3, and Vita...........

I think I need help
You just know a good thing when you see it. I've played through the game dozens of times now, but it's nice to see that PvZ2 is finally out on a non-iOS device (Android/Nexus 7). I'd easily pay $15 for a Vita version without the freemium hooks.

I figured we would eventually get Hotline Miami as a PS+ game, and was glad to finally get to try it out after hearing a lot of people rave about the game.  I went into it imagining that I would find it kind of interesting but would hate it from frustration due to it being described by some as "like a puzzle game with murder".

I enjoyed it more than I thought i would and I have played it the past few nights since we got it and now have gotten all the trophies. Aside from a few annoying instances it wasn't too bad and I was surprised I had finished my first playthrough on it in a couple of hours since I hadn't really looked into the game much but saw my friend dying repeatedly trying to do an early chapter.  After trying to be really careful during my first playthrough it's funny to think of how I can run through the chapters now and I would imagine that will be for most of you guys that like it enough to finish the story, I mostly avoided guns aside from a few instances where you don't have a choice but to use them.

I'm a little bit behind you but I'm I think I'm on the same path as you. I took my time and was super careful during my first playthrough. Now that I'm going for all A+ scores, I'm shocked how quick I can get through the levels. Honestly going rampage style works a lot better than taking it slow at times.

I'm getting my metroidvania on with Batman Blackgate. It's delightful!

I'm terrified of Hotline Miami after reading this thread today.
Glad to hear you're enjoying Blackgate. I'll grab it when it gets to about $15 either digital or retail. Reviews haven't scared me off but they didn't instill a ton of faith either.

Kotaku said it was amazing. But we know they're not a credible source.

Polygon gave it an 8 so that's really like a 12 at every other site.
Yeah but it's also on 3DS, and knowing Polygon's obvious Nintendo bias you have to subtract about 5 points from that 12, so their real score is about a 7.

I'm sure the reviewer/editor was pulling their hair out trying to assign a score. "It's Nintendo so we have to love it but it's Sony so we have to hate it!!!!!"

Excellent point, Tyler. Had it been same game, Sony exclusive it would have received a negative score.

Also, I just watched Django. It was good, just way too fucking long. My only complaint is the same complaint I have with the LOTR series: way too many needless scenes of people just walking or riding horses to show off scenery.

I just got the Hotline Miami platinum trophy this afternoon after playing it off and on since Tuesday. For those having trouble seeing enemies coming, I can't recommend enough that you alter your view almost like quick sniping in an fps. But here you should be holding down L2 and use the R-stick to pan. Alternate panning and going for broke hitting combos and your scores are bound to rise.

Tarantino's movies are really hit-and-miss with me. I loved Inglorious Basterds. There was a ton of dialogue in that one too, but almost all of it was delivered by Christopher Waltz in one of the most awesome/despicable roles I've ever seen.

Then there's Death Proof. :wall:

only 1 movie that wasn't good. cry me a river  Waltz is da shit!

Basically Hotline Miami is a top-down perspective Hitman game on amphetamines, it's easier to progress if you make kills silently but you often have to kill several enemies rapidly to prevent discovery.

Regarding randomness, I remember a particular mission (I think it was within the first third of the game) near the start sometimes a guard would spawn and move facing west, and sometimes it would spawn at a quarter turn. If he spawned west, it was possible to melee him fairly easily, but if he spawned quarter turn the patrol he followed made it extremely difficult to sneak up on him without alerting him.

Look out ahead is helpful when planning, but I can't tell you how many times I died being shot from offscreen on the later levels that require gunplay as you can't really stop and look ahead when you are trying to hit several enemies quickly and switch guns so you don't run out of bullets.

If you get stuck on a level, I find a good mask to try is don juan as lethal doors may not do the best for your score but will make quick work of enemies so you aren't stuck in a bash animation when others come. I was also partial to the wolf mask (knife) so that you always knew you started with a decent melee weapon which can be thrown in a pinch to kill most common enemies in one hit silently.

Has anyone come across any free game rental codes for Redbox lately? I'm thinking about doing a quick and free run through Beyond: Two Souls.
They used to have a free game rental one for texting them SAINTS, not sure if it's still going on. Good call on Beyond. I beat it through Redbox and hated just about all of it. So, so awful.

3 days later and I platinumed Hotline Miami. God, I loved it.

Dead Rising 2 Off The Record... I read this game brought back the free roam aspect from the first game but the reviews seem to be pretty mixed. Anyone, who has spent some time with it, care to share their thoughts? thanks

If you skipped Dead Rising 2 but played and enjoyed DR1, I think OTR would be a good choice. I played on PC after playing DR2 on 360, so no experience with the series on PS3, but I really enjoy the games. OTR had more options to play at your own pace. If you don't enjoy Capcom-style crazy, best to pretend the games don't exist . . . but I'm a fan. Roll with the insane plot and it's a fun ride.

Having the Wii version of Resident Evil 4 being my only RE experience, I'm having a hard time adapting to the PS3 controls for RE4. Keep trying to fully rotate the camera and having trouble aiming. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it, just felt like bitching.

I'm really curious when reading reactions of Hotline Miami of who is actually using the lock-on targeting versus just straight dual-stick shooting and who is run-and-gunning through the levels versus being moving a measured, careful pace to take out enemies as stealthy as possible. I'd imagine that those sorts of things can change the experience a great deal, especially when first getting into the game.
I'd been using lock-on targeting since the beginning when it was introduced. You definitely have to be careful, it doesn't function well as a typical dual-stick shooter.

When I hit Chapter 5 I worked on the trophy 'These Are My Guns', and I see a lot of what you're saying. Trying to clear that level out without using any weapons was definitely a challenge. Some of the randomness made it a bit more frustrating than I would have preferred but there's way more depth to the game than it initially appears. I said I wasn't very impressed, but I keep coming back to it, it's growing on me.

I enjoyed OTR quite a bit. OTR has Sandbox mode, which is like Inifinity mode for DR 1, except there is no health decay, it is truly free roam where you can get PP/level up and that carries over to story mode.

I think I got up to level 50 (maxed out) in sandbox mode before I even touched the story in OTR.

It is basically the same game as DR2, with Frank West instead of Chuck Green, a few different bosses, and a somewhat different story, a few new combo weapons, all set in the same location (with 2 location additions in OTR).

You're definitely not the only one who has bitched about the RE4 controls. I personally didn't have any issues but many people on CAG maligned them over the years.

Hope you used the Tony mask, that made it much much simpler.
