If anyone still needs a PS Move Sharpshooter to go with the House of the Dead bundle that was so cheap in October, Toys R Us has them on clearance for $10 new.  Got one tonight, makes the games much more fun. :)

If they promote their games and do a good job of getting the word out, they can at least do just fine if not do really well. You can't really use their failure as a sign that all other indies will fail because nobody buys them.

The Ethan MH people didn't do much of anything to promote their game, as you can see from their post history on the PS.Blog. They only posted to say "It's coming!" and then "It's out!" nearly four months later.

True, but it's not as if this is a unique case. Many Indie developers get pass over do to having too high a price point for people to take a risk and get the word out. Stuff like Retro/Grade comes to mind, which is a really cool game that nobody played. I picked it up for $2.50 on Steam on a friends recommendation, and feel a lot more people would have as well if the price had been lower.

Some might say it isn't fair to compare the two, but a lot of unknown games wind up selling really well on mobile platforms which I feel has a lot to do with the low price of admission. Speaking for myself, I'd be much more likely to spend $3 on a whim than $10, which a lot of developers might consider devaluing their game but the alternative is often selling few if any at all.

I guess I'm just too saturated with games to be willing to spend more than a few bucks on something obscure, so maybe it's just me. Or maybe Ethan is just a bad game I couldn't say. I'm losing my train of thought so this is probably all gibberish anyway.

Do you think the PS Blog allows free reign on their blog?

I never understood how some girls who are overweight could have huge guts and no breasts.  That's like backwards.

As for that Ethan game, it's the type of thing that makes me feel bad because it's exactly my type of game.  Like NinjaSquirrel said, I am just way too inundated with other games to consider buying it (or almost any game) for $10.

I do agree that their marketing was poor.  Even if they didn't have a huge budget for marketing, they could have done tons of community connections on sites like NeoGAF and Reddit and at least try to develop more goodwill for themselves and the game.  I also agree that the market is just oversaturated at this point.  Which is a good thing for gamers and a bad thing for developers.  I buy pretty much everything but I'm an exception and a lunatic.  My friends buy 5-15 games a year and are perfectly happy, yet I bet there were close to 300 games released for the PS3 in 2013.  Those numbers just don't bode well for developers.

Finally, I think what surprises me the most is that most of this team was part of the same team that made Funky Lab Rat.  This game looks exactly like Funky Lab Rat.  Was Funky Lab Rat so successful that it merited a spiritual successor?  I can't possibly imagine it was, I wonder what fueled them to think this game would be any different than Funky Lab Rat?

All that being said, I'll gladly grab Ethan at 50% off or more.

Retro/Grade has the added side effect of being a game designed to be played with a Guitar Hero or Rock Band guitar, so there's an odd stigma to that aspect that drives people away from that even if it's optional. I thought that game was well worth $10 for the rad soundtrack and the unique way it lets you play the game. That developer took forever making that game, so its initial hype for the weird/awesome control ideas died down big time by the time it was released four or five years later. He even admitted that he made mistakes during development of that game and tried to rectify that with his new game, which I think is called Neverending Nightmares or something similar to that.

You keep bringing up good examples of indies that handle their business the wrong way whether in the promotion or development aspects, or even both. Announcing your game way too early or just not spreading the word about it very well can have a huge impact on the game's chances. The good thing is that with Twitter, Youtube, Twitch, and sites like PlayStation Blog, indies have several ways to spread the word and give their games a better chance of actually succeeding no matter the platform. Anybody that ignores or improperly uses that stuff has nobody to really blame but themselves for their poor performance, certainly not the audience for not knowing what the hell this weird game is that just released.

Free reign in what sense? They can talk to Sid and the team about announcing new things on the Blog when they have something new to announce, as I'm sure they don't turn down teams that want to post on there. It's even mentioned quite often on the Blogcast by Sid or whoever when they talk about new releases that "we should probably contact those guys about posting something on the Blog" because some of them don't seem to get that it's a good idea to get their game on there and interact with the rabid audience that comments on there, sometimes on dumb things not related to the topic at hand. Initiative helps a lot with this sort of thing. Remember when Capcom frequented the blog and whoever it was that did ever post replied to every single comment? Their games tended to sell well because of that sort of engagement with the audience, never mind that they're Capcom and their releases tend to be a bit more anticipated by default than the average indie game.

Since you ran the XBL thread for a while, how many XBLA games came out that nobody there had a clue in hell what it was or that it was out that week? Tons? And they bombed, too? That's a shocker.

Edit: Actually reading the post and the second sentence says they went quiet after launch, so they admit to doing that right off the bat and they wonder what went wrong? Your game comes out and you're not trying to tell everybody about it at every site you can?

It's like Frisky's posts are the odd ones out when you look at this thread in general.

Commenting about games and PSN and shit.

It's just funny.

Oh, and Frisky, thanks for the info about the 22 GB Ni No Kuni.  I'm at 1%.  Should be another two weeks or so.  By the time it downloads, I'll have gotten some other new game for Christmas.

Maybe you should stop being such a cheapass and pay for faster internet.

I wish. I have 150/65 FIOS upstairs but no signal downstairs where the PS3 is even with repeaters and wires running through the house. Its very frustrating.
I'd move the ps3 and connect it to your router with a hard line until the DL is done if its really that slow in its usual spot.

By free reign I just mean you think the blog would let every indie game do bi-weekly or monthly updates on their games? Seems like they may not want more than 3 or 4 posts per day as it may alienate readers if they post too much stuff that isn't interesting to the majority of readers. I'm just speculating though, I have no idea. Maybe the staff at PS Blog are starved for content and would gladly post anything they can get their hands on. I don't know...

It's equally as bad, actually worse, on XBLA. Most downloadables get a quick cut-and-paste mention on Major Nelson's site, but that's it. Neither console store is particularly friendly towards smaller indie titles either, though I'd say PS Store is friendlier than the marketplace on 360.

fuckin essays up in this bitch.
Still not nearly as bad when all the nerds come out to argue about the 6th best Final Fantasy game or which version and which order of which version to play the Persona series.

What's a good one to pick up for someone who hasn't played any of the games in the series? I checked Gamefaqs, and the universal consensus is that XIII is the best so I'm thinking about starting with that

On a somewhat related note, if you guys haven't heard, Final Fantasy VIII is out on Steam. It comes with built-in GameShark codes that will automatically draw low-level magic for you, if you happen to be one of the people who complain about the five minutes it takes to max out your Cures. ;) I'm tempted to buy it since it's tied for my favorite FF, but the lack of language choices puts me off when I was hoping my next playthrough would be in Japanese for the reading practice.

In order: FFT, FF8, FF7, FF6, FF10/FF12. Never played these long enough to rate FF9, FF13, FF1-5. Also 6 may be ranked higher as played it a long time but not long enough.

FFT - awesome story, great characters, awesome gameplay. This kind of holds true as the reason for every FF games rank. Each varies little to moderately better or worse in each category and can be argued about amongst fans.

You could at least explain why.
Well final fantasy is tricky, you can't rely on anyone else's opinion or recommendation on these games. They are all vastly different and depends on what your into really. If your an rpg fan, just know they are all generally good games, especially 3-10. So you win with whatever you choose. You may find your not digging XIII so then try another to find your groove.

Explain why, you fucking asshole.

On another note, I'm obsessing over Hotline Miami. I think it's because my hands finally understand the control system. I've A+ed chapters 1-8 and 16. Six left and then it's mainly just grindy stuff for the platinum.

PS3 players should see, if they haven't already, and update being pushed out. This update allows for the Cross-Play feature compatibility with the Vita.

So we should definitely buy Terraria now on PS3 while it's on sale if we want to play it on Vita, right?

I'd think that they have to have something of importance to write about to be able to post on the blog, but outside of that, it wouldn't be a big deal to do that. The Retro/Grade guy had three posts in the month before launch that were posted every other week, so it's not hard if you have some good reasons to post that often.

My favorites in the main numbered FF games (in descending order of preference):

FF6 - I'm not sure if nostalgia plays into this decision, but I was amazed at the depth of the character development and story in this game.  For people who did not grow up on NES and SNES JRPG's, it may take them longer to get used to the "retro aesthetic," but the visuals of FF6 were incredible for its time, and the music is STILL top notch.  It's hard to create beautiful sprite work (see Dragon Fantasy book 2 as an awful counter-example), so FF6's visuals and music still hold their own today.  The esper mechanic is interesting, though it also makes the classes much less distinct by the end of the game as everyone can learn the same spells.  The defining point for FF6 is its rich story and the interplay and camaraderie between the cast's many players.  I will never forget Kefka's digitized laugh or the story moments of Cyan, Locke, Celes, and many others.  I want to cite specific examples but I think players should experience them for themselves :)

FF12 - I know, I know, I'm probably in the minority here, and I totally get that.  However, as an ardent player of the MMO FFXI (which I won't count in this list), I thought FF12's gameplay mechanics simulated an offline FFXI quite well, though I still missed skillchains.  The world was expansive and beautiful (sometimes to a fault due to the long distances of travel), but I appreciated it at the time as it made the world feel huge and alive.  Now as I've gotten older, I prefer fast travel systems as opposed to long periods of travel (15 minute waits for airships in FFXI, I'm looking at you).  The story was forgettable but overall inoffensive, and I actually liked most of the characters.  I also think FF12 had the best English dub in the series.  The world was full of secrets, and my favorite part of the game was sneaking through high level areas among enemies who would one-shot me to get the Zodiac Spear early.  However, just like FFXI, FF12 had too many obfuscated secrets and mechanics that would have been impossible to uncover without a walkthrough or strategy guide.  I found this mystique charming back then but I'd probably hate it today.

FF7 - Everyone knows about this game by now.  I'm pretty tired of the constant shilling (the Advent Children movie and Dirge of Cerberus were awful, though I quite liked Crisis Core.  In fact, Crisis Core is one of my favorite games on the PSP, and the ending still gives me chills to think about even today!), but I cannot deny that I absolutely loved this game when it came out.  Sure, the story is a bit too convoluted for its own good and sometimes it felt like they threw in weird plot twists for seemingly no reason other than to shock you, but the materia system is still my favorite gameplay mechanic of a main FF game.  Music is still great, visuals are quite dated now but passable, but lord... I wish I could skip those summon cutscenes.

FF4 - Having completed the DS remake a few years back, I definitely realized I had rose tinted goggles when I thought FF4's plot was revolutionary.  Looking back, it's silly how I thought all the "sacrifices" in the game were so brave and heroic, and the characters are rather one dimensional with the slight exception of Cecil and a couple others.  Still, the plot was deep for its time and the visuals and music are still gorgeous.  FF4 also introduced the ATB which was a great step up in my opinion over most turn based systems (with the exception of, in order of preference, Shadow Hearts 2, Grandia 2, FF10).

FF1 - Classic.  I probably spent the most hours on this game overall than any other non-MMO game in my life.  I've beaten the game probably over 8 times (3-4 times on the NES, 1-2 times on GBA, another on PSP, and once again on iOS), including 4 WHM and 4 MNK challenges.  Story is stupid, characters are practically non-existent, but I still love the class system.  Seiken Densetsu 3 does the class system better (I think the job selection of FF3, FF5 and FFT are good but have little weight when you can switch on the fly).

FFX - I never beat FFX due to real life tearing me away from video games around this time, but what I did play I loved.  This would probably be higher on the list if I had ever finished it.  I'm looking forward to the HD remakes on the Vita!!!

FF5 - Boring story, boring characters, and somehow I felt the visuals took a step back from FF4.  However, the job system was interesting, even if a bit broken, and it was one of the first games that made me eager to develop new strategies for non-boss battles.  Overall rather forgettable for me though, with few memorable moments or songs.

FF2 - The first true story I witnessed in any game.  It's pretty silly by today's standards, but the innovation of the leveling mechanics and keyword/password conversation system was quite interesting.  Unfortunately, it doesn't really stand the test of time, as it's rather counterintuitive to become stronger by constantly hitting myself in battle.

FF3 - Eh... I could never get into this game.  The job system is decent but the overall pacing is just too slow.

FF8 - Someone is going to mail me a letter laced with Anthrax for this placement.  I couldn't get past the first 4 or 5 hours because I hated the main character and the junction gameplay mechanic.  I read up on the plot later and was glad I never gave it a second glance.  /ducks

FF9 - Never played this so I can't give any judgment.

As for non-mainline FF games, Crisis Core is probably my favorite, followed closely by FF Tactics.

Awww, you wrote all this in response to some joke posts. I feel bad now.

I'm a huge ff fan especially 6 so his post was cool to me. Ff9 is a must play jay remedy

The odds of it being cross-buy are slim to none I imagine due to it being on such a discount this week for the ps3. The most we could probably hope for is some kind of small discount for people who already own the ps3 version

I think Bob was saying this because it's going to be Cross Play.

Edit: Wait, maybe I'm an idiot. I think I'm not sure what Cross Play is vs Remote Play. :p

XIII was p good but I'd say Mystic Quest is the best intro. It'll get you hooked on the series fer shure.

Seriously, though, FFIV is my favorite in the series by far. I liked the linear approach, the class system was fixed and made sense, and the emphasis for the game was almost completely on the story and the characters.

Otherwise...I got right to the end of FF1 on the NES ages ago, but was severely under-leveled. I ended up never completed it because I didn't want to do a bunch of grinding right at the end for the last boss.

Never played II or III or V.

I found FFVI and FFVII to be rather dull in the latter half, and just quit playing right at the end of both because I wasn't interested at all by that point. The split party nonsense in FFVI was the last straw; most of the characters were trash and I ignored them, but the game kept making me use them anyway.

FFT was quite good, though the original PS1 version's story was incomprehensible due to the horrendous translation. I still need to go back and play FFT: WotL to get the better version there.

Never played FF8.

I played a bit of FF9 and would like to go back to it, but at this point it's terribly dated. Maybe if it comes out on Steam and there are graphics mods like FF7 got I'll give it another try.

Never played X. Looking forward to the HD remake.

Played a bit of XII. Thinking about emulating it as the ability system was pretty neat.

Played a bit of XIII and quit about 4 hours in because it was the easiest and most pointless "game" I'd ever played. I think XIII was probably what inspired the Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls game. "Look! This FF doesn't make you do anything but hit the same button over and over again? That's so cool, we should do it!"

I don't pay money for MMOs anymore, so that rules out XI and XIV.

Seriously, though...Mystic Quest. Not much of a FF game, but it was filled with simple fun. :)

FF jabber:

I got confused by the FF talk and thought suddenly FFXIII had become well-loved.   :)  The Mystic Quest talk made me smile, though.  I actually really like that game.

Going to just sit here for a second thinking about it.

I'd really like to replay FFV and VI, but everyone says the PSOne versions are such crud.  I, too, am used to the cartridge versions, so I do fear that the fake load times might annoy me.  I'm still hoping for remakes or re-releases of V and VI on 3DS or Vita (or hell, PSP), even if all they did was release those unpopular new iPhone versions.  I know, someone is going to bring up the GBA versions, but I played those and have no desire to again cram GBA carts into my old DS whose screens now seem tiny compared to my 3DS XL.

Okay, there.

Actual thing I came here to ask:

ANYWAY, so I have my PS3 set to turn on every night.  Every Goddamn night.  Yet I just looked in my queue, and Ni no Kuni is still in there.  I'll go check my PS3 and see if my tiny hard drive is out of space or something, but barring that, what's the deal?  I've noticed this before that sometimes my PS3 will continue to turn on nightly but won't download stuff.  Sometimes it's due to needing a system update, not being able to log in, or lack of HDD space, but barring all that, what the hell else could be the deal?  Because I swear it's done it before for apparently no reason.

Edit:  Well, I turned it on, and it said the file system or storage device had become corrupted and would be restored.  Oops.  This has happened twice in the last few months.  Maybe time for a new HDD, but I don't have the $$, and it seems a shame to upgrade the HDD near the end of the system's lifespan.

What's a good speed for download rates from PSN? I moved my router and rigged up some stuff to fix my download of Ni No Kuni.

I used to get 55 / 35 wireless on my PC pre moving router

Now I get 15 / 10 wireless on my PC

PS3 Internet Connection Test is varying between 3-6 / 0.5-2 wireless.

100 foot long Ethernet cable running through my house giving me 17.5-33 / 8-24

I guess I'll use the Ethernet cable for this download but what do people get for wireless usually from PSN

I'm having a crisis!  My PS3 keeps booting to a red screen and "the file system is corrupted and will be restored"!  Then it restores it, reboots, and does it again!
