I'm not even touching the base game until there's a good sale on the DLC. I'm trying to get my trophy completion percentage up and the Plat alone only gets you 57% for the game since there are so many DLC trophies.
Good luck with Flappy Goat... it’s a pain in the ass.

What could they give away that no one may have just bought? ...Goat Simulator?

The problem is that the two complaints - not giving away great games and giving away games people already have - are contradictory. The more popular a game is, the more likely people are to already have it, because it's popular. Then they offer less popular or indie games, and people bemoan the lack of quality titles. I remember the same thing happening with Club Nintendo years ago, when they started offering game downloads.
I agree with this to an extent. But now that they offer fewer games there's even less of a chance of people not owning whatever games it is that is free for that month. And they could at least offer the dlc with whatever free games they do since that would be something most people are not going to already have as far fewer people buy dlc. Though even with the most popular games sony could put on psn not everyone is going to own them given that most games barely sell a fraction of how many owned systems there are from what I understand.

They could at least refrain from making the plus games something that has been included as a digital code in ps4 console bundles. I know that’s how I got my digital copy of the Nathan Drake Collection.

They don't give the DLC because often the game is being given away to juice sales of DLC, which people will be more likely to want given they have access to the game now. DLC often holds its price point for longer than the game itself. Giving away the game and generate some extra sales of $10-20 DLC from people that would have otherwise not bought any of it is not a bad plan.

I know this would never happen, but sometimes I wish that Sony would just figure out what the average per month ‘cost’ is for the ‘free’ games, and then just give me an equivalent monthly coupon/credit to use as I wish on the game of my choice. Honestly, almost every month I check the game announcement post on the PS Blog, and see the complaints from people who either already have the games being given or those who hate the choices Sony made. In that way, if Sony were smart, they would go to something like a Twitch Prime model, where people could then use their credit/discount as they wish on an item (or two) of their choice. Some would go for discounts on the AAA games, while others would lean towards digital-only, indie titles.

Long story short, give consumers choice, and they’re more likely to apply their credit/discounts towards purchases that keep them in the PlayStation ecosystem longer going forward. And I’m guessing Sony would hear far fewer complaints, and perhaps even build up some gamer goodwill that seems to have been lacking lately, when compared against Microsoft.

twitch prime is subsidized by amazon, xbox gamepass is subsidized by microsoft, sony has nothing else going for it to subsidize something like this. trust me, when all you crying about sony not bending over backwards for you go to xbox and they get on equal footing or even the lead next gen, all that "goodwill" microsoft is giving out now will dry up. i mean, damn, ps plus has been sub $40 for the past couple weeks in multiple places, how much of that do you want back?

Honestly, if Sony leaned more into providing more/deeper discounts with PS+ as opposed to giving away monthly games, I suspect they would make more money over the long term. And all things being equal, that would be my preference. I only offered the original suggestion because I don’t think they could get away with taking away the ‘free’ games benefit cold turkey without taking a major PR hit (which they don’t want/need to do, with the new generation around the corner). But honestly, I have a hard time thinking that those managing that aspect of PS+ don’t see the process as a monthly headache, especially as it seems like a thankless/no-win scenario. I’m just trying to figure out a solution where both sides can see it more as win-win, instead of the community splintering into those who are dissatisfied and those typified by your post/response. Perhaps you can’t please everyone though...

I think the only problem is that you’re probably imagining that monthly cost per person to be a number that would entice people as an alternative, when it’s likely no more than $2, and I’m probably being very generous.

There are 36 million subscribers and there is no way they are shelling out anywhere close to 2 bucks per subscriber per month. It would be a few cents per person. 10 cents would be 3.6 million dollars split two ways.

I mostly agree with you. I did say I was being generous. The only thing I contend is that 36 million subscribers number is probably being juiced up by Sony.

Not meant as an attack, just furthering your point that the refund or discount they would offer in lieu of "free" games would be peanuts. Sony is publically traded so I doubt they could get away with totally cooking the books outside of something like using number of subscription during the year (active plus lapsed subscriptions) rather than just active subscriptions.

My next question is what percentage does Sony take off the top for digital content. Goat Simulator sold 2.5 million copies and is reported to have made 12 million both as of 2016. ~$4.80 per unit for a $10 game (not accounting for dlc). I would guess Sony gets 30-35% of the digital sales price. Traditional retail makes ~25% on games after distribution channels so that would roughly make sense.

It’s most likely just a check upfront. $2M to the publisher of Goat Simulator, or whatever we each think the number could be. Anything else seems needlessly complicated. Supposedly there was a documentary with the guys behind Rocket League and they may have spilled a bean or two when talking about the PS Plus deal that kicked them off, and it was an upfront payment.

Seriously, they could at least make it look like they were trying.... also feel bad for anyone that just opened a PS4 and bought Uncharted that game. Goat Sim?...why? How do they even pick these games?
Lol it just occurred to me: wasn't Uncharted one of the pack-ins for the holiday bundle? I mean JFC Sony. . .

People would sell their codes; opens a whole can of worms. The way it's set up now they don't have to offer jack shit and some people who have subs don't even bother spending time claiming their free games. I don't understand it myself but even the fiancee doesn't because she can't be fussed if she doesn't care about the game. Although, it makes sense given I have played MAYBE 1-2 of the free PS+ games I've claimed in the last decade. The whole system just needs to be abandoned TBH because it's trash.

Like GamePass does?
This right here is what is going to contend with PS5 exclusives. Sony is just resting on their laurels again producing the same fucking proven formula games over and over and people eat it up. Will that bubble ever burst? I hope so, but realistically all they'd have to do is continue the sequel train for a generation or two and they will still do well. COD is the biggest example of license to print money so I'd see no reason for them to stop now.

GPU provides real value and concerns of unsustainable business model have been reassured from Phil himself, so I'm rooting for them. It's already the talk of the industry and turning heads, so 2020 is going to be an excellent kick-off to a real console war again.

Got an email today saying that if you log into DC Universe Online before January 31st, you get an item that makes one of your heroes the max level in the game for free. Because it's the game's 9th anniversary.

I'm going to stream some Hades here in an hour, which is the new game from Supergiant Games (Bastion, Transistor, Pyre) that should be coming to consoles later this year.

Thanks for the link. I basically played Borderlands 3, Borderlands and Far Cry New Dawn.

I also saved $6 thanks to PS+!!!!!

Not sure they want to brag about how crappy the additional savings are for having PS+

Also apparently no free prizes for me.
The free stuff page is definitely broken. I can’t get it either.
