If you think they aren't willing to pay $100 to lock consumers into a digital ecosystem for seven years of purchases, you haven't been paying attention to the digital platform wars.

Many tech companies are comfortable with not making a profit for a few years in order to make money hand over fist later. This is how business works. You roll out short-term value to consumers to create a relationship you can exploit later. That's why deals tend to get worse over time.

I would bet anyone $50 that the difference between the SKUs will be at least $80.

If they do low-ball the digital edition price, expect to see continued retooling of PSNow to be more like Gamepass. That's what MS is banking on, their services making up the difference in the initial loss on consoles. Hell, they don't even care to take losses at this point and are actively promoting it.

To me, that's how they'll stay viable and maybe shore in some good will from customers who won't be able to trade in games.
 
I think $350 for digital, and $450 for disc. Just so they can say, that if you pay $50 more than the Series S, you can get double the power, and more storage space, or for $50 less than Series X, you can get a console that is almost as powerful that can play 4K Blu Rays.

I'm thinking of maybe finally buying myself a PSVR for Christmas. Are there any killer apps from this sale that are must haves? I already own No Man's Sky, and I heard that's like a whole new experience in VR.

I know I will pay almost whatever extra price the disc version PS5 is.

I just like having discs.  I like seeing them on sale.  I like giving them as presents.  I like getting them as presents.

I also like digital games but the options of a disc drive makes whatever the extra cost is worth it to me.

I also will really like putting a BluRay that I own forever with no digital license into the PS5 and watching it.

 
Moss is short but it's a joy and other people seem to love playing it when you are showing off your VR.  

Farpoint is what VR first person shooters should be but you really need the gun add on to fully experience it.

Astrobot is excellent and a ball to play.

If you like classic Battlezone, then Battlezone is definitely worth buying.

I think VR Worlds has a non-interactive dive in the ocean movie thing that is GREAT to show VR to people.  I don't know how much it is on sale but it might be better to pick up if it's ever a freebie.

Carnival Games was a lot of fun.  It's kiddie but it's a nice little diversion.

Rigs made me sick for days with motion sickness and I couldn't even get through the tutorial.  (and Wipeout with all of its fast paced motion didn't affect me)

Eh, I don't know what games you like but maybe this gives you more information.

I have one of the last ones of those with the digital emulation. It upscales my PS2 games, and they look great on an HDTV.

Sony will phase out physical media entirely the second it becomes viable, and we're already trending in that direction. Mid-gen is the right time for that, when people are already inextricably invested into your ecosystem. The optical drive SKU doesn't exist because they want it to, it exists because it has to right now to avoid a similar backlash to what Xbox One got last generation, but I have no doubt we're in a transition period and this SKU probably will be the last Playstation console that will have a physical drive.

As more people opt for the cheaper PS5de, attitudes and expectations will change and eventually the extra sales from the physical media option won't be worth the cost of production. I think that's likely to happen pretty fast. I'm willing to bet the PS5 Pro won't have an optical drive.

I mentioned Until Dawn Rush of Blood, VR Worlds (for the ocean dive), and Carnival Games earlier. I would certainly add Job Simulator to the list. Beat Saber as well. I also have Resident Evil 7 but I haven't played it yet cause i don't wanna have a heart attack!

The majority of Sony and Microsoft fans are going to buy the more expensive ones with the disc drives, and continue buying physical games. If you release a more powerful console that suddenly won't play any of the games that people spent thousands of dollars on, you will have a bunch of extremely pissed off fans. Sony already experienced this in the past when they tried to make a PSP that couldn't play UMDs. The backlash was hard and fast. I'm thinking that physical media is here to stay, for the moment. We still live in a country where our internet speeds for most households aren't even good enough to stream HD movies, let alone 4K content. Other countries like Japan with their super fast internet available everywhere, might be ready for the all digital future, but America is not. And, as long as some games keep getting ripped from digital store fronts, and only end up available in disc form, people will continue buying physical copies. That's not even mentioning data caps per month from companies like Comcast. I'd much rather put a disc in my console that has 50gb of content saved on it, then have to download that 50gb of content over the internet, and possibly breach my data cap for the month, and pay a big fine to my internet company.
 
My top PSVR game is still Superhot, but I haven't bought a new one in some time. Looking at both Star Wars squadrons in VR and Vader immortal though.

The majority of Sony and Microsoft fans are going to buy the more expensive ones with the disc drives, and continue buying physical games. If you release a more powerful console that suddenly won't play any of the games that people spent thousands of dollars on, you will have a bunch of extremely pissed off fans. Sony already experienced this in the past when they tried to make a PSP that couldn't play UMDs. The backlash was hard and fast. I'm thinking that physical media is here to stay, for the moment. We still live in a country where our internet speeds for most households aren't even good enough to stream HD movies, let alone 4K content.

Some of what you say is true now, and that's why they're releasing a physical SKU at PS5 launch. But it probably won't be true much longer. Anyway, the data is trending in an obvious direction plus some of what you said just isn't true:

All digital is coming, no matter how much we love physical (and I do), and the pricing here is gonna play a role in its adoption. There's a lot more to be said, but it's ultimately off topic. I've staked my estimations, and I am definitely not arguing from what I want to happen, but what I think is likely. The only thing left to do is to wait until early November when PS5 finally announces its prices and release date. :) (Or maybe they'll announce it in 2021, whatever)

Just to add to the VR thing, if Minecraft is your jam, they're about to add VR to that as well.

I just don't see all digital working unless sony completely changes their entire way of running things and the internet providers increase in both pricing, number of providers available and internet quality.  First they would have to create a new version of psn.

Second they would have to drastically cut the price of digital games as very few people are gonna pay full 60+ for digital games when they could go to walmart, best buy for those with gcu, amazon prime discount on occasion etc and get them 10$ or whatever cheaper and have other incentives like being able to trade/sell their game.  Most I could see them selling games for is 30$ for big titles 20-10 for anything else.

3rd they'd have to sell the console for maybe 300 at most given that it has little value itself.  They aren't nintendo and lack the strong line up of exclusives to back up an all digital console and would be directly competing with every other console with a handicap and pc gaming like steam. 

I really just don't see digital only becoming a thing until they either have a way to get people to jump into it via exclusives and drastic pricing differences or they just eliminate it and alienate most consumers.

I still think Sony is really shooting themselves in the foot by not making the PS5 backwards compatible with PS1-PS4 games. How does Sony beat MS? By taking away their advantage. I've been playing PS1 and PS2 games upscaled  with anit-aliasing and all the bells and whistles on 15 year old PC hardware. If you've never seen or played an older game on an emulator then you're missing out as these games look like remasters with many of the old 4:3 games being able to run at 1080p through some kind of voodo magic. There is also a semi functional PS3 emulator out right now but progress is is slow compared to other platforms and nobody knows the PS3 architecture better than Sony.

We know that Sony has great games and what could be better than playing all of your old favorite classics upscaled to keep you busy while next gen games start to trickle in slowly within the next few years. Would make people more likely to adopt next gen if they knew the PS5 did something that the PS4 can't.

Xbox is poised to have the most powerful console lowest next gen entry price point, great value with gamepass with EA Play now being included for free and MS 15 1st party studios so you know the exclusives are coming eventually.  If Sony come out right now with their typical predictable high price low value leaning on exclusives model in the middle of this current Xbox hype wave then they're going to get memed to death online.

 
There is zero chance Sony phases out a disc-based system during this gen. ZERO. Things are not moving quickly enough in that direction.

I will happily come back here and eat crow if necessary in, say, 2023. But the chance is zero.

 
Piracy is the future of games preservation, I guess. It's really sad to see the customer lose so much of it's power in the digital age.

Not if Nintendo gets their way, they are going sue crazy with pirating sites, and getting a ton of them shutdown. Also, next year Japan is tightening it's copyright laws even harder than they ever were for all kinds of media.

This morning apparently, people who owned the game + season pass, had the Ultimate Edition showing up as purchased on the PSN store. Ironic that they claimed something couldn't happen, actually happened by accident. It has since been fixed and it shows that the Ultimate Edition needs to be purchased again.

I didn't really care for the Scott Pilgrim game, even playing it in local co-op. It's pretty basic IIRC. I imagine it'll be even less fun all these years later.

People in the Xbox thread are trying to claim that Sony is terrified of the Xbox Series X, so they have dropped the PS5 price to match it. I doubt that is true. It just sounds like wild speculations. But, the rumored prices as it stands are $499 for the disc version, and $399 for the digital version.

There are some rumblings that the Series S may have some negatives. The ram being less then the One X is one of them. Some devs and even digital foundry said things about it.

Only Xbox one game I have on disc is Bee simulator for my kids, but if I get a next gen XB I'm going for the Series X.

 
Yeah, I'm probably going for the X also. I already have $480 in Microsoft cash that I got online for only $414 with various website discounts and coupons. Meaning as of now, I am $66 ahead of paying the full $500 price. That gives me enough money to extend my GamePass Ultimate subscription if I want, or I could be a lunatic, and buy games with that hypothetical money.

What kind of delusional world are you living in? Nobody in the Xbox thread is saying Sony is terrified. Quit trying to troll you ignorant fuck.
 
I don't have a 4K TV, so my only major beef with current generation console games is long load times, which are relatively fixed with an SSD.

The only place where I want significantly more performance is in VR (both on my gaming PC and on the PS4). It's nuts that the PS5 won't be backwards compatible with PS4 games. They have an enormous VR catalog which could run amazingly well on day 1. Instead anyone buying a PS5 mostly for VR purposes is gambling that the game devs will port their games, and that's a risk because the PS5+VR userbase is likely to be very small.

I would buy a PS5 at launch if they'd announce VR backwards compatibility. Hell, maybe that is what they are going to announce tomorrow for the last day of the VR announcements week.

Without backwards compatibility, I'm probably better off buying a PS4 Pro than a PS5.

It's cute that you have a crush on me. But, if you read the article that was posted, you can see that it says exactly what I said. That Sony was scared into reducing their price when Microsoft revealed the Series X to be $500.

That’s funny. I posted that article and don’t see the word “scared” at all. Just that they may be reducing it in response to the Series X pricing. Pretty big difference than everyone running around the Xbox thread saying Sony is “terrified.”

Where are you getting your info? The PS5 is backwards compatible with both PS4 games and PSVR.

 
I think it is safe to say Sony would have preferred to be dealing with a $599 X and $399 S, but I doubt they are "scared".  I sure they planned for this eventuality, the "worst case" scenario came true and they will probably have to commit to a $499 price and deal with the initial loss.

The S is definitely a bigger concern for them (and probably less expected), as they bet on a similarly powered "entry level", but smaller SSD and no drive.  Microsoft played their hand differently and have a very attractive price at this level.  Sony won't be able to match that, $399 or maybe $429 seems more likely.

That said, maybe I read above wrong, but it's just the PS4 VR games we don't have compatibility info on, but the rest of the PS4 disc and digital games will be BC?  I'd love to upgrade my Pro, but this will be a big factor.  I don't have PSVR and don't care about that, but my shelf of PS4 games had better work, and hopefully some of the newer ones get some upgrades.

 
It would be nice to have VR compatibility with PS5, but they really need to release PSV2 in 2021 or 2022. PSVR is a nice gimmick but it wasn't quite as good as I hoped it would be during the time I owned one. Reminded me alot of the way Sony will roll something out first and then drop support for it (Vita, PS Eye, Motion Controllers, etc). Hoping this time they stick with it and greatly enhance the control options.
