I'm not happy with Sony's decision to remove PS3, Vita and PSP from the web store. I like to browse the Japanese store on my desktop using Chrome to translate and now it's going to be much harder for me to search for games.

I think it's pretty normal for anyone who was invested in all of the old systems. The download list on PS3/Vita includes all PS3/PSP/Vita purchases so if you played on all those machines it's easy to have a huge download list.

 
Looking at the list, several of the games stand out as utilizing VR, special peripherals, or having lots of licensed content.

However, keep in mind that Sony says all PS4 games could be subject to "errors and unexpected behavior".

In the case of games like Shadow Complex Remastered and Hitman Go, I expect these got on the list because they were exhibiting an especially apparent number of errors and bugs that were apparent to perfunctory testing. 

I wouldn't be surprised if more games get tagged as "Playable on: PS4 only" once real players start actually playing these games, and run into more game-killing errors and bugs.

With this in mind, the "PS+ Collection" seems like a great idea: when some of these popular PS4 titles end up having game-breaking bugs when played on PS5, it will be a lot easier for them to say "whoops", and worst case pull the title out of PS+ Collection and stamp it with "Playable on: PS4 only", and say "sorry, but it was free so you can't complain", rather than have to issue a bunch of refunds to everyone who buys those titles.

i doubt its a rights issue and moreso that these particular games are specifically designed with the ps4 hardware standard in mind. 

 
btw Romancing SaGa 3 Vita does show up on the PS3 store, so still available for now

What is the PS4 game experience like on PS5?
PS4 titles get even better on PS5. Select PS4 titles will see increased loading speeds on the PS5 console, and will also leverage Game Boost, offering improved or more stable frame rates. Some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may see higher fidelity. Additionally, PS4 games will also take advantage of some of PS5’s new UX features, but more to come on that later.

What about PS4 games on PS Now and PS Plus?
Backward compatible PS4 games included in PS Plus or PS Now will run on PS5.

Can I stream PS4 games on PS5?
Yes, Remote Play from PS4 to PS5 and PS Now streaming are supported. The benefit of streaming is that you can save your storage space on PS5. Please note that PS4 games will not leverage PS5’s Game Boost through streaming.

How do PS4 game transfers and game saves work between the two consoles?
You can transfer digital games, game data, and game saves from a PS4 console to a PS5 console using LAN cables, or by connecting wirelessly (WiFi). If you’ve already stored PS4 games and game data in the external USB storage device connected to your PS4, you can bring them over to PS5 with that external USB storage device. And if you are a PS Plus member, you can also sync PS4 game saves on PS5 through cloud storage.

Please note that the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.

For Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, when players decide to upgrade from PS4 to PS5 their game saves will transfer.* Sackboy: A Big Adventure also will support game save transfers from PS4 to PS5 in an update that will be delivered shortly after the release of the game.* We’ll share additional details on both games closer to launch.

How will I know which PS4 games aren’t playable?

Well I'm pretty disappointed in this decision to remove the ability to buy games for the Vita from the web store. The vita store is not always the most up to date and there have been problems with it not working from time to time.

I think I'm going to check my wish list and buy a few last vita games I had on it before the change the store. Just wanted to give people a heads up if they still buy games for PSP/VITA or PS3.

I don't understand the removal of themes and avatars, especially when every damn CE THEY released was part of the selling point. Not like it matters much since I just turned on the PS4 today after five months to prepare the transfer to PS5. If not for Demon's Souls, they wouldn't even have my money this year. Disgraceful.

 
I totally get the ire relating to the lack of legacy bc. But the outrage over the storefronts just seems...silly. Vita's been dead to Sony since 2014. Ps3 is 14 years old, peeps. It's just a cost effective move.

If you want those games, plug in your consoles and bite the bullet. Or, just friggin softmod them and get whatever you want (don't go online with Ps3 though!!)

Gonna be screwed once they officially end all PS3/PSP/Vita support completely. I'm probably going to go through and dl the patches for games I've uninstalled in the past sometime this weekend. Since I have the old 160GB HDD I used before putting the 500GB HDD in my PS3 right now. Just in case, as this shows Sony will turn off the life support switch with very little notice.

Although anyone with a Wii knows how it feels when Nintendo ended support for the Eshop on that. Especially for the Skyward Sword channel download, which was the only way to patch the game breaking bug for it

That's been my biggest fear with Sony. I don't really trust them to keep those legacy platforms networks alive forever. Microsoft is doing an incredible job at making it feel at least that my digital purchases with them are secure (as long as its back compatible. I worry they'll kill 360 download servers at somepoint too) but Sony is really making it feel like an expedited process. I'm not sure about an external HDD but I can tell you first hand the internal HDD is upgradable. Might not be a bad idea to start downloading all your digital purchases for safe keeping.

My softmodded Vita makes me feel a bit safer in regards to still having access to content even when sony kills those download servers but my PS3 and PSP I am definitely concerned about. I really wish sony would support back compatibility and their old systems. Just give us some emulators for ps5 and I'll be so damn happy

Would Sony closing PS3/Vita store fronts cause patches to no longer be accessible? If Sony ever denies me access to digital games or DLC I purchased after the thousands I have spent, I am contacting an attorney.

IIRC and HDD connected to a PS3 will only work as storage for Media and Saves, or as a backup drive if you are upgrading to a bigger internal HDD or moving to a new system, but you cannot actually play from it like on the new systems.

A couple months ago I reconnected my PS3 updated it to the newest FW and deleted a bunch of stuff that has either been "Remastered" or "Rereleased" (As in resold to you by just cleaning up the graphics and marginally boosting performance) and downloaded exclusive stuff that is still worth having in the system like MGS4 (reinstalled to have all the patches and stuff downloaded) Heavenly Sword, The Infamous games, Resistance Tirlogy, Killzone Trilogy. Downloaded some old stuff like the Turtles in time Remake, Scott Pilgrim, Marvel VS Capcom 2 (took forever to look them up on the download list)

Its super easy to softmod the PS3 if you can read and follow a tutorial pretty much fool proof, as long as you dont intend to go online with it I would say thats the best way to safekeep your stuff.

To play the games. Ever since Sony disabled trophy passes, they are irrelevant. I still enjoy collecting, but I'm not going to freak out about not being able to sync ps3 ones if I ever soft mod it. You can (and should) create an alt account when doing this anyways, so you can earn them there.

I certainly wouldn't say they're irrelevant. Trophies were around for a long time before trophy passes ever came into existence. And while they were a nice bonus, trophy passes ultimately didn't offer much to the trophy experience. You'd need to earn 10 platinums to make $10, so unless you can find 10 games that sell for $1 each, you're not even breaking even. Especially if you consider the time invested in earning said trophies.

I don't know, I feel a sense of completion and achievement from earning trophies; it's something I enjoy collecting, much in the same way as I may need to have every MCU movie on 3D Blu-Ray, every Matthew Sweet album, or every Lego Dimensions set, etc. While I do agree in playing games just to play games (which is part of the reason I'm upset that the PS5 won't support my PSX and PS2 games,) I honestly find myself putting off playing any games that I'm not going to earn trophies in. I have thousands of unplayed games on other systems like the PSX, PS2, DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. that fall to the wayside because my mind is like, "If I'm playing this other game, then I'm taking time away from playing a game that's going to give me trophies."

The outrage is more centered around the fact that Sony has been setting a precedent, or expectation, that BC and the money we funnel into digital stores will be lost over time. Will this just happen again with PS6? Being able to carry over purchased content like themes should not have an expiration date unless actually specified when purchasing.

Biting the bullet is a poor excuse when the competition is making quite the legacy platform for themselves. And that will matter down the road.

Vita may have been dead to Sony since 2014, but multiple games have released for the system in the last several months so it is certainly not entirely dead.

More entitled nonsense. When I bought a theme/game for my PS3 I had no reasonable expectation nor did they promise that 15 years later I would be able to use that theme/game on my PS5. If they took away the ability for me to play it on the PS3 that would be different but expecting to be able to use it on every console in the future is ridiculous.

Which still begs the question; Why are people still falling for this whole digital library crap when they know full well that there will come a day when they will no longer be able to download and play the games that they paid good money for?

I think convenience is very compelling, but the irony (on CAG) is that most people don’t value their money. For me, I don’t buy digital unless it’s free or included in a CE where the money was spent on other physical items of actual value to me. It’s also why I’m 100% ok with Game Pass because I’m only renting content and that is understood up front. Digital content can be taken away without notice, but if someone did that with physical goods we have a word for it: stealing.

Because 99% of the people who play videogames (myself included) don't care. I play through on average 100 games a year. I almost never go back and replay through something. I barely have enough time to play through all the current games I'm interested in. If I do replay something it's far more likely to be a remake/remaster then the original. When I purchase a game it is so that I can enjoy the experience and then I move on I don't need to have the ability to play that one game for the rest of my life.

The problem now is even if you buy physical copies all the day one patches just to make games playable means you probably will not be able to play physical copies either when servers go offline.
I went all in on PS4 this gen after being on 360 and og xbox the last generations. Microsoft very much has my attention with bc and forward compatability. I honestly see it as a reason to jump ship and get a series x instead of a PS5.

There's also a school of thought that if you buy digital, you don't need to worry about your disc reader going bad.

I buy some digital and some physical, so I'm kind of set either way.  Not all eggs in one basket sort of deal.

I've lost more games to CD rot (hello Sega CD) than I have to digital licenses being revoked.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be dead before I lose my digital libraries.

The funny part about digital vs. disc is it’s the same exact thing except you can hold one. The disc downloads the full game anyways in this day and age, plus read the eula and even with a disc you don’t own the game lol.

Plus with most games being required nowadays to have the user online, the disc is useless without any type of network connection.

This. We're purchasing a license to download and play it, hence why I'm starting to transition to fully digital. If you're that concerned about bc, go buy the old consoles and learn how to fix them yourself (youtube is your friend) and you can be good for ages.

Sony's dickish attitude towards it's customer base is annoying. I have all 3 systems, and am more invested in PS than the others, but MS is by far the most consumer friendly at this point. The Japanese companies really need to work on their treatment of their bases in my opinion.
 
I can't relate to the preserve in original form instinct personally... I hate the way 360/PS3 games look these days and have no desire to go back to them on their native platforms. Emulation not only bypasses a lot of those issues, but also lets you upscale resolutions and textures while adding some post-processing and running at a higher framerate. I wouldn't touch anything from the 360/PS3 generation natively at this point.

Just curious if anyone's dl'ed Persona 3 or 4 PS2 Classics for PS3.   It mentioned that there could be compatibility issues since it's not running on it's original hardware.   Has anyone ran into issues with these digital only versions for PS3?   I'd rather get these versions(since they're $10 each) and it's one less reason to dig out my PS2.

 
Over on PC, the fact that you can continue playing a game almost indefinitely is a big deal. The typical play-pattern on console is to always play the latest big release. The typical play-pattern for PC gamers is to have one game that you "main" for years, even sometimes decades. The games get regular support patches for easily 10 years or more. One of the recent games I've been enjoying on PC came out in 1997, and I started playing it for the first time this year. It should be stressed, this is overwhelmingly the typical play-pattern for PC gamers. 

Microsoft is trying to bring that PC experience over to Xbox, integrating their Xbox console lineup with their "Xbox on Windows 10" PC platform, making "Xbox Play Anywhere" (sharing your saves/profile between console and PC) universal for all first-party titles going forward, etc. 

I think this convergence between PC and consoles is going to change the way people play on console.

By far the biggest benefit of consoles, in my opinion, was the ability to pop a game cartridge into your console, boot up straight into the game and start playing. No hassle, no time investment to set up.

That has slowly been eroded away: now we have to boot into full operating systems. Games take multiple hours to download. We have to tediously manage our hard-drive space because only a few AAA games will fill up our hard-drives with their massive texture files. This makes it's a massively aversive experience just to choose which games to play.

Behavioral psychology tells us all these factors have enormous influences on our experience playing games. 

All those factors have always been present on PC, and I think they contribute to why people end up "maining" one title on PC: if you play one title you really like, it's painless and friction-free to just hop right into that title. Playing literally anything else other than your "main" introduces a little friction, and behavioral psychology tells us that little bit of friction is enough to change your behavior.

I don't know about currently as I heard it had been patched out but the original versions were said to eat saves so they were unplayable basically.

Do yourself a favor and get the psp version of 3. vanilla and fes on the ps2 aren't worth playing due to no manual control over party members and the ai is full on derp in vanilla and less stupid in fes but still lacking any common sense. Like there are 5 enemies and they are all weak to wind but I'm gonna target the same one twice in a row and waste my turns.

p3p is the superior version of the game as it also adds in the other party members s links and femc route on top of the other stuff like skill cards and manual control of party members.
