Sony released financials this morning. Net loss of $1.26 billion for the fiscal year. Another expected loss of $500 million for the next. Professor, are you there? Pls help me understand. Will this mean they finally go ...third party?

Wow, that's worse than the initial $1.1 billion loss estimate months back. I thought they'd have turned it around a little after the sale of their laptop division, and the success the PS4 has had. Just more proof that the profit margins on PS4 are razor thin right now.

As for where they go from here, it depends on whether or not Kaz and upper-level management are willing to stop being stubborn prideful idiots.

Not sure what I've said to give the impression I'm more a "fan" of Nintendo, but okay. And I wasn't being facetious earlier. I geniuenly want to know what this means since they continue to be the least healthy of the three companies. If it's inevitable Nintendo go third party, what will become of Playstation?
Sony is making a lot of changes to the business, getting rid of unprofitable sectors, etc., is my understanding. Obviously that doesn't change the numbers from the previous year, or can contribute to them, but it's a process that should improve their future profitability. I haven't really heard of Nintendo doing anything to try to fix the problems they have. Then again I don't really pay attention to Nintendo because their hardware is cheap gimmicky crap nowadays and it pisses me off that they get so many nice exclusives I'd rather see elsewhere.

Problem is that loss includes all the buildings they sold and the laptop division sale, iirc. Last I heard they weren't dumping the money pit that is their TV division either, but rather spinning it off into something they wholly own (as in something they're solely financially responsible for). I'm gonna guess more layoffs are coming like the Santa Monica ones then.

I think a majority of that loss is Sony getting rid of the PC division.

The 3DS is anything but gimmicky crap..there is a reason they sell so many consoles.
I'd say the hardware is underpowered and a little bit gimmicky (3D), the reason they sell so many is because of the library. The Vita's strong suit is the hardware, and the 3DS' is the library. For most, library > hardware, so that's why the 3DS is out in the lead sales-wise.

I think a majority of that loss is Sony getting rid of the PC division.
How do you lose so much money selling a PC division?

Not sure what I've said to give the impression I'm more a "fan" of Nintendo, but okay. And I wasn't being facetious earlier. I geniuenly want to know what this means since they continue to be the least healthy of the three companies. If it's inevitable Nintendo go third party, what will become of Playstation?
They're restructuring, which, even in light of all their sales to stop plunging money into worthless endeavors ( PC and Mobile divisions) require money to do so. Yes, it seems as they are in a pickle, but the products they are pushing at the forefront, like the PS4 is stemming the tide. Microsoft is forcing Sony to be aggressive, yes, but healthy competition so far. Sony is not doing the Nintendo, which after amassing huge amounts of money thanks to the Wii and handhelds ( DS onwards), are taking hit after hit with nothing to show for.

All in all, Nintendo is a no show and has been since the gamecube. They exploited every valuable franchise they have, revived it and killed it beyond sane limits. I enjoy Pokemon, but it does not blind me to the most uninspiring game company and developer in the last decade. Those who clamor for games like Smash for 3DS and Wii U have snorted cocaine right from Reggie's butt to support such a company.

For all its evil, Microsoft at least has tried to drive innovation(trying to get all Big Brother on us, though). Sony is "listening" to the gamers, and let's see how long they stick to it.

Tl;dr

Nintendo Sux, Microsoft Evil, Sony wins Console Wars.

It's a shame the company as a whole is doing bad, but from what I've read the gaming division is on the upswing. It grossed $9.507 billion for the fiscal year.

The margins might be razor thin, I dont know, but this loss has nothing to do with Playstation. The Playstation brand is making a ton of money. The rest of Sony is the problem.

What library? Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Legend of Zelda, Smash? The same shit for the past 10-15 years? At least some measure of justice is being handed down to Nintendo.

Buying P3P certainly isn't going to help with your plats.
Like I get those anyway. Besides it's just going to be part of my ongoing digital hoarding.

Baseball is the best, but the replay thing they've implemented is indeed terrible. I mean on the one hand they've done a good job with overturning calls that should have been overturned and not overturning ones that shouldn't be, but there is definitely something missing in baseball this year because of it. Managers storming out of the dugout and arguing bloody murder with the umpires. The slow walk out and looking into the dugout for a signal is awful.
Well except for that one time that Yunel Escobar struck out on a 4-2 count and they still got it wrong after going to replay.

The DS was a no-show? Really?

Also, you're deluded if you don't think Sony isn't evil too, specifically the higher-ups. Just less evil.

The only product they have that's pushing to the forefront is the PS4, and as I already noted, profits are razor thin on them right now. Sony can't be kept afloat solely by their console division, it's small potatoes compared to the rest of what they own. At the very least, they have insurance as a core source of revenue.

It's a shame the company as a whole is doing bad, but from what I've read the gaming division is on the upswing. It grossed $9.507 billion for the fiscal year.
Gross is irrelevant. Profit % is what matters here. But no one's denying that the gaming division is doing great.

The margins might be razor thin, I dont know, but this loss has nothing to do with Playstation. The Playstation brand is making a ton of money. The rest of Sony is the problem.
I completely agree. It's just that Sony cannot rely solely on insurance and their gaming division to keep their head above water, especially with the low amount of profit compared to gross they're currently generating from the gaming division. The margins are thin though because the attach rate is currently garbage. Hopefully that'll start changing in the next year or so with the release of more games.

What library? Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Legend of Zelda, Smash? The same shit for the past 10-15 years? At least some measure of justice is being handed down to Nintendo.
Not everybody has a hate-boner against Nintendo like you seem to. They've definitely fucked up with the Wii U, but I like the library they've had for the 3DS so far. I'm not saying the Vita's is shit or anything (it isn't, even if it's a little niche), but it needs more first-party love it is not getting. Back me up here Tyler.

By being shunned out of gaming as a whole? Microsoft excommunicated him, and not even singing their gospel will get Tyler in their good graces.

Except the phony 3D gimmick on it sucks (it has a very narrow viewing angle that is hard to maintain for a mobile system, most people just turn it off), and they built the whole handheld around it. Think of how much better the 3DS could have been if Nintendo had skipped that gimmick and improved other areas (two analog sticks instead of one, better screen, better battery, etc.)

These thoughts echo mine pretty closely (though I would have been a bit more mean in my response). Nintendo has been struggling recently because of a lot of bad decisions, but they've released two of the best selling consoles of all time since the Gamecube. What a stupid thing to say.

You should actually read the reports and such before you make comments. As others have said, the PS brand is doing fine, with expected losses from a new console launch. The rest of Sony is a shit show. The main difference? All Nintendo does is make games and they're still losing more money than Sony's game division. Nintendo reported a $450 million loss, while the PS division of Sony reported $78 million.

As others have said, Sony as a whole is restructuring and making smart moves, such as getting out of the PC market. Despite all the internal turmoil at the company, their losses are still lower than their record lows of 2011/2012. So it shows that, despite large losses as a company, they're making progress and moving forward, while Nintendo continues to dig themselves into a giant money pit.

There are always rumors of Microsoft selling off the Xbox brand so that it can focus just on games and not be dragged down by the losses within there's t of the company. I wish they and Sony would both do this.

I know you love to adamantly defend Nintendo for some reason, but in this case the numbers don't lie.

Don't get me wrong, I love pokemon, played every single one of them. I just find it appalling anybody can defend their behavior of running their franchises to the ground, offering little innovation in each iteration (Activision and Nintendo have competed quite nicely in this regards since 2007). Also, the Wii and the DS family have carried Nintendo through these losses.

If they had called it Mario Kart VIII. Professor and others wouldn't have realized it was the 8th one. Stupid mistake.

Is there anyone who bought all the characters + all original costumes for DOA5 core fighters for $20 a while back? It looks like they are now offering all the costumes again -- I'm just wondering why it even lets me add this item to my cart when I should already own it? Well, it look like the other two costume packs on sale are new, so I'll probably be getting those.

When you take into account property, materials, legal fees, then paying off executives and other things like early termination of contracts with other companies. These are some of the costs that a company just has to swallow and just pay out of pocket since this is not a profit but its all marked up as a loss.

The 3D on the 3DS is a gimmick, but my older son loves it. He plays his 3DS in 3D mode always unless somebody is trying to watch him play over his shoulder. He is annoyed that Pokemon X/Y do not always play in 3D. On the other hand my younger son never uses it. I find it mildly entertaining, but only for short periods of time. Point is that whether or not the 3D is cool or just a gimmick depends on the individual.

Also did Tyler show interest in a game that I mentioned in the same sentence as Spelunky today, or am I still reeling from the effects of past 3D use???

I don't have much to add, but the home console sales numbers of Nintendo consoles is really interesting.

From NES to WiiU, in millions:

61.91 > 49.1 > 32.93 > 21.74 < 100.9 > 6.17

Those numbers really seem to suggest that the Wii was quite the anomaly.

I enjoyed the Nintendo consoles during the last gen, though good quality games were few and far between. I was always jealous of the cool shit on PS3 though. When I had the choice between Wii U & PS3, I thought a good long while before going with PS3 (blu-ray helped there). I'm so glad I did too because I've loved the shot out of it while the Wii U still doesn't have anything I really need to play. I mean the new Mario games look cool, but nothing I'm stressing about missing. Then I eventually traded my 3DS because nothing fun (for my tastes) was coming. Again, I had a blast on Wii & 3DS, but have no regrets at all being an all Sony dude now. They just match my older gaming tastes so much better. I'll always have my NES through N64 nostalgia though.

They are different bundles but you already have those costumes, so don't buy it obviously. I don't know how this new costume bundle is packaged. With any luck, they actually listed it as one download and you won't have to download the costumes individually because that would get annoying fast.

Gamecube was a good console. Plus I modded ours so we could play that crazy and awesome japanese game where you are a rotating propellor, the name of which is escaping me at the moment. Loved the multiplayer battles in that especially. Unfortunately my mod stopped working several years back, so no Japanese games for us. I keep meaning to see if I can get it working again but haven't gotten around to it.

I don't like the 3DS. I loved the DS. When I got the Vita I realized I do like a nice resolution with a nice screen and some power. Hardware wise the Vita makes the 3DS feel like a Tonka toy to me. The DS had a steady stream of games I care about. The 3DS never had the right games for me. I don't care about stuff like Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and Fire Emblem. Paper Mario was awful. I haven't played new Zelda yet. I didn't bother with New Super Mario Bros. 2 because although I'm sure it's good looked too damn similar to the other games. My 2 favorites on the system have been Mario 3D Land and RE: Revelations. Past that I'm finding it hard to care. I'm not really into JRPGs. The 3D viewing angles suck for me. I turn it off.

I want Nintendo to release a more powerful, thinner, better resolution screened version of the 3DS without 3D and an HDMI out port. Boom done.

 Yesss, yesss. There it is. I'll never understand the animus toward Nintendo (or Microsoft, for that matter). Each company has made its share of contributions. I shudder to think what things would be like if they all operated the same or simply made their own iterations of Killzone.

As for Sony's so-called "restructuring", they've been doing so for what seems like forever. I wonder how much longer they can continue hemorrhaging like this. Sure, Playstation is doing well but is it enough? Their console business doesn't appear to be all that profitable. Even if they were to eventually spin Playstation into its own company it's still unclear (to me) how it could exist in its current form. Their R&D is buoyed by other divisions. Economies of scale play a huge part in why Sony is able to make certain moves that others cannot. Could a video game company (like Nintendo) have eaten the initial losses Playstation saw with PS3 and vita? Could Nintendo sustain themselves on those type of margins?

Look, I agree they shit the bed with Wii U. I just choose to express my frustrations in the proper places ...instead of a playstation thread. It pisses me off to no end that the Wii missed the HD boat, or that they still can't seem to get their internet/account system together. Among other things. But claiming Nintendo has little business acumen or is headed toward Sega's fate is oversimplifying things.

Also, for good measure:

Wrong. The 3D aspect is a terrible gimmick, as was the 2-screen aspect of the 2DS. Additionally the hardware is a piece of crap with terrible-resolution and quality screens (no joke the PPI is lower than the original PSP's was.) Saying it's quality because it sells well is like saying New Kids On the Block and Justin Bieber are terrific musicians.

The 3ds xl has a much larger 3d viewing angle, and a much much much better battery life.
And a much worse picture since the resolution is the same, but stretched out onto a bigger set of screens. Looking at it gives me a headache after only a few minutes of play.

Has anyone played persona 2:innocent sin for psp/vita?
I'm loving persona 3 and have persona 4 but is persona 2 worth playing?
How does it compare to those two?
I've got it but only played the first hour or so of it. I know it's supposed to be good, but it isn't much like Persona 3 or 4.

There are no social links in the earlier Persona games and demon fusing is a bit different. Instead there is this kind of weird demon negotiation system. I don't know how it changed in 2, but in 1 you have to try and guess the mood of demons in battle in order to try to win them over to your side. Each character got different negotiation moves which would have an effect on a different mood stat. It was weird, and could be used in place of actual fighting.

The setting is still that of high schoolers getting wrapped up in paranormal strangeness. The theme of Persona 2 seemed to be about rumors. I seem to recall rumors could be made real, and there being a game system in which you purposefully manipulate them in order to cause events to happen.

I think it's probably worth playing, I just haven't had time for it (and it doesn't hurt that I have it in UMD format, bleh). If you haven't played Persona 4 yet though it does a great job of refining what they started in Persona 3.

If you do try it, keep in mind that Pesona 2 has two parts. Innocent Sin is the first one, which got the PSP port you are talking about. Eternal Punishment is the second part that never came to NA until recently as a classic on the PSN store.

Edit: I got this backwards. Innocent Sin is apparently the one that never came to NA, hence the PSP port I guess.

Isn't that pretty much the definition of a gimmick? An optional, somewhat quirky, feature that some might find appealing and others will ignore/hate?

Maybe I'm spoiled by my vita, but I hate/hate/hate my 3ds xl because everytime i come back to it, it's dead. Suspend mode just doesn't preserve battery life at all.

I bought it with the plans to play a certain set of games (fire emblem, etrian, chrono, twewy, etc) but now i've had it for 6 months and used it for maybe... 10 hours? I need to just sell the damn thing.

It's just too hard to switch to it after playing vita. I don't mind (or use) the 3d and stuff, but it's... hard to describe, it just feels like I'm playing with a cheaply made toy. But I could get past that, except every time I've went to go play it the battery is dead.

It doesn't help that games (physical) seem to be quite expensive on the 3ds -- some maintaining $30-40 price over years. I'm spoiled by psn sales and a huge backlog at this point.

When the economy really crashed Sony started taking massive hits with no end in sight. They decided to start selling off unneeded parts and getting out of businesses that didn't turn a profit. All of the "restructuring" are not going to bring immidiate financial stability. For instance, The sale of the PC Division isn't complete, there are tons of parts and so fourth that are just sitting there and they have to be accounted for in the financials. The difference between Sony and Nintendo, is Sony is a multifacit company, not just an electronics company. Sony has financial companies, health insurance or something like that, Electronics, Gaming, Music, and movie studios. There is a lot more to it then one thing, but when you close a division, or launch a new product... you lose money right off the bat. Sony is trimming off all the non-profiting parts of the company (I.E. The computers, the Sony headquarters... etc.) They are getting down to the basics and parts of the company that are profitable so the company as a whole is profitable.

Nintendo is just a gaming company... and they are not doing anything to change the massive losses they are getting. The biggest part of their company that is profitable is the handheld sector. If Nintendo were smart... they would just focus on the handhelds and release software as a third party. They would make bank bringing Mario and the like to Xbox and Playstation, and the Handhelds speak to themselves. Heck they could make it where the 3ds connects to a TV and then you get a similar Wii/Wii U experience. Everyone knows Iwata is doing nothing as a CEO to try and fix Nintendo's problems, and unless he does something, Nintendo could be completely done.

I didn't have an issue with battery life. I usually just plugged it in with my phone when I went to bed. But the holding prices on 3DS games (retail and digital) was a big reason I sold. I mean their idea if a digital sale is $2 off Petz Horsez 3D Dreamz or some shit. Seeing all the awesome Vita sales and then looking at the eShop just made me frustrated.
