Yeah I've heard that. Still interested to see what it's all about.

I have no problem with super-hard platformers like Super Meat Boy, the only reason I dislike Spelunky is because there's no checkpoint/save system. Does La Mulana have checkpoints and stuff, or is it like Spelunky where you die 3 times and you're playing the whole game over again?

I have heard that La Mulana has some extremely subtle puzzles.

Yeah it's been hilarious reading that. Tons of "well I would get it but it might go free in a few months" posts as well.
Just a heads up Spelunky
has shortcuts when you beat the levels and meet Mr. Tunnel Man.

You're not going to like Nuclear Throne, then. It's a rogue-like too. You die and you start over with a new randomly generated world.

Are those supposed to show up right away? I gave the required item to the required person, but after my game ended and I went to the required place, it looked the same with no spoiler thing. Haven't gone back since to check (because other shit distracted me), so maybe dude just needed time to work.

The Tunnel Man asks for 3 items. You can't give them all at once, so it takes 3 trips (at least). You can look up what he asks for and when if you don't want to discover it on your own.

Incidentally, Spelunky has (automatic) cross-save, so your shortcut unlocks transfer across PS3/Vita (and eventually, PS4)

La Mulana is basically the bastard child of Fez and Spelunky.

You're gonna love it!
Did you forget to use the sarcasm font? :p

Also, I'm more pumped for Log Moolana 2.

The XBL thread has people who are super pissed that they are making games free that they already bought. It's like time travel.
I wouldn't say I'm super pissed. Just more kicking myself for not touching the GWG games earlier. I've owned like 80% of them and it gets annoying when I haven't even touched them yet. I wish there was a selection you could choose from sometimes, but I'm not mad at MS or anything. It's just the usual buyer's remorse.

It's not like PS+ where the sub is required either, there's just no benefit to buying them other than the possibility of extra playtime.

SR: The Third is the first game I haven't owned from GWG in months, I'm kinda excited (even though I own it on PC and was just playing it today).

I gotta take a shit.
Is that you Jay?

So I just read a rumour about the MS side of E3, and part of it is a remake of Battletoads by Rare. Could be the best E3 in years if true. :p

Do I look like that moronic dolt?

Well fuck me right in the ear hole. I barely made it to the end of the caves twice (once without the required item), how in the name of Jesus Rollerblading Christ am I supposed to do it twice more?!?!?1?one

p.p.s. ps move = gimmick / rear touch pad = gimmick / kinect = gimmick / jayremedy = gimmick / 3d screen = gimmick / oculus rift = gimmick
Of those, I've heard VR transcends gimmick - when the tech achieves true immersion, it's supposed to be straight up amazing, a new way of viewing the world (or, vr world, i suppose). It's not an gimmicky add-on or an alteration, but essentially it's own category. Give it 10 years, though. I think move might finally find a home with morpheus, too.

Back touch pad was just a bad idea, though. I can see why someone thought it was worth investigating as an idea, but it should never have left the research dept. Same with jay.

I know this is three posts in a row, but bear with me:

There is a creature in Demon Gaze that urinates on your party for mass damage.    And it also "shits like a machinegun" which does a large number of small attacks that will silence/paralyze any character hit.

This game is awesome.

I have no problem with super-hard platformers like Super Meat Boy, the only reason I dislike Spelunky is because there's no checkpoint/save system. Does La Mulana have checkpoints and stuff, or is it like Spelunky where you die 3 times and you're playing the whole game over again?
Do you play Spelunky for the story? There's no need for saves in that game.

You're not going to like Nuclear Throne, then. It's a rogue-like too. You die and you start over with a new randomly generated world.
Yeah I'll probably get it when it's on sale, not like it, then complain about it. Maybe they'll have some permanent upgrades in there, but sounds unlikely.

I don't think he was talking about you. There was one dude in the XBL thread that was like "put yourself in my place" about buying Dust and Deadlight for super cheap a few months earlier. The newly created MS Slap to the Face™.

The chart I posted only compares Nintendo to Sony's gaming division. Yes, they've taken huge losses. Yes, they've mishandled Wii U. My point is that they've been consistently more healthy than both Sony and Playstation. They've achieved this by being conservative as fuck, to a fault at times (like many Japanese companies).

What I still can't understand are the calls for them to abandon ship and "go third party". Based on the information at hand how can you hold that position? Professor? Anyone. Why is Wii U's lack of traction worse than Vita's? Why is PS3's five year loss permissible but Wii U's one and half not? Why is Nintendo's push for 3D worse than Sony's? Why is Nintendo "gimmicky" for pursuing NFC yet Sony not for pouring millions in to VR?

The lopsided pseudo-analysis is just funny to me. Sure, I'd like for more of you to give them a chance, but it's whatever. I'd like for me people to buy a Vita as well. People want they want, though. You'll notice most of us so-called Nintendo "fans" actually play a little bit of everything. Craziness.
I think you either missed my point earlier (or chose to ignore it) when I said that Sony did have an awful few years, but they're rebounding despite internal restructuring struggles. Yes, it's taking a while, but have you ever restructured an entire multibillion dollar company? I personally have not, but my assumption would be that it would take more than a couple years. Hell, the company I work at, just to get a few departments changed around seems to take forever.

I don't know why you're ignoring the numbers. Nintendo lost almost half of what Sony lost AS AN ENTIRE COMPANY that has arms and legs in many branches of the business world. Nintendo focuses on games. Tyler posted sales numbers earlier that directly explained that huge surge from the chart you presented to us. The Wii was an anomaly. Lightning in a bottle. They took a strong gimmick, and people ate that shit up. And then Nintendo apparently said to themselves "Hey guys, we can do whatever the fuck we want!" and they completely botched the shit out of their "next-gen" console release. They had a chance to finally take the success of the Wii and get on par with the quality consoles that Microsoft and Sony were both offering, and they completely botched the shit out of it. Their "next-gen" for the last two generations has been one behind MS and Sony. The Wii was slightly above PS2/Xbox, and nowhere near 360/PS3. The same with the Wii U and PS4/Xbone.

Again, the numbers don't lie. Go look at the sales figures. Wii U sales are dropping and they're dropping from a position that wasn't very high to begin with. The Wii U has been out for what...two and a half years now? And the PS4 surpassed it's total sales in 6 months (6.1 million units to 7.5 million compared to the data I can find). The Xbone is almost above the Wii U as well. How are you going to argue with that? I'm not going to argue that Vita has had poor sales, because the fact is, it has. What I would argue, is that perhaps Sony should consider giving up on the handheld market, and making Vita their last. Not having a handheld is working out pretty well for Microsoft.

This is a long term thing. I'm not sitting here with the assumption that Nintendo is going to announce at E3 they're no longer making consoles. I'm not a fucking retard. But if you really can't look at the sales data and the trends of these last couple years, and say that it couldn't be a possibility that they move on, I don't know what to tell you. Companies like Sega and Atari faced sales and poor financials for a number of years before getting out of the game, and Nintendo will too. They had a damn good run, with an impressive library that's nothing to dismiss. But they're not evolving with the times, and as someone said earlier they appear to not give a shit about what consumers want. "Hey, our fans have been asking for a robust online network since Gamecube...should we build that into the Wii U? Nah, fuck it! People will buy it anyway, because we're Nintendo!"

The main difference between Nintendo and Microsoft/Sony, is that they don't recognize that people just want to play games, sometimes. Two generations of consoles and handhelds, they've built the system entirely, 100% around a gimmick. Sony and Microsoft ripped off these gimmicks, after seeing the initial success (motion controls) and touted them as the greatest things every. However, they were smart enough to realize that not every game should have these things. Games should just be able to play games with a controller. Nintendo needs to release a powerhouse console, with no stupid fucking gimmicks. Go back to the prii-Wii days and just put a controller in my hand and let me play my game. If they really wanted respect in my book, they'd go back to the Official Nintendo Seal of Approval concept and make it mean something like it used to. Make it so these third party, garage based companies cant bog your system down with a bunch of shit games.

And if you're even going to say "Xbox and PS3 have shit games too!" like the Wii and Wii U don't have more shit games than every console ever created, combined...I will drive to wherever you are and smack you upside the head until it makes sense to you.

Yeah I've heard that. Still interested to see what it's all about.

I have heard that La Mulana has some extremely subtle puzzles.
There are save points, but they are spread pretty far apart and can screw you over really badly if you save when you don't have enough health/are in a bad place. The puzzles are why I compare it to Fez, as they both feature extremely obscure solutions which are nigh impossible (at least at first) to solve without a guide. I've yet to make it very deep into the game, but it's not for lack of trying.

Also the platforming controls are weird. Very very weird. I can't really describe it, but it's basically to platforming what Resident Evil 1's controls are to survival horror.

Seriously Cap? I thought you were just trolling him and egging him on. Not actually arguing with him.

Yup.  And you're batman and ProfessorStotch is Mac from Always Sunny and BobbyTastic is a stuffed dragon and wrencrest is a hot naked chick and Frisky is an animated badger.

P3P is really made for people who've played P3 to death. FES would've been the much better choice if you've never played the game before.
Everywhere I've looked is full of people who agree the female protagonist exclusive to P3P has better interactions and social links. Also apparently you don't have control over your party members in FES but do in P3P. That is huge to me. Being portable helps too. I own all the Personas portable now.

The only thing being lost out on besides some cutscenes is The Answer epilogue which is universally considered too grindy so I'll just YouTube it when I'm finished. I can also live without 3D enviornments for the social aspects of the game. Its actually even a bit of a plus since it lessens tedious backtracking.

Nuclear Throne blog post!

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/05/14/the-randomized-fun-of-nuclear-throne-on-ps4-ps3-ps-vita/#sf2940531

Shows I think Vita footage. Hopefully this baby is 3 way cross-buy!
This looks unquestionably better than Spelunky.

Then again, what doesn't.

I signed in for the first time in months just to "like" this post. And I didn't condense that shit in the quote because it is THAT good.

Not for nothing, but the PS2 was built around a gimmick too (DVD player). The PS2 and the Wii are very similar, the major differences are the risks PS2 games could take because of the huge install base (that the Wii's never did, for the most part, most of the good Wii games are niche) and the fact that the PS2's gimmick wasn't directly involved in the gaming. But the DVD player did have a lot to do with why the console was so underpowered.

The PS2 had more shovelware than the Wii and Wii U combined, by the way, it just also had a ton of good games. :)

The DVD player wasn't a gimmick. DVD players were the new thing and were selling for a lot more than what most people wanted to shell out for it. The PS2 including the player was bloody brilliant, offering a solution at a much lower cost that, for most of its console cycle, was one of the better quality players on the market. And with DVDs providing a MUCH better quality picture and sound, they were already in demand when the PS2 released. It was just one of those things that people didn't know they wanted/needed until they actually saw it.

Eh, I still consider it a gimmick. It's a good gimmick, but it's a gimmick. It's why the PS2 sold gangbusters (and why the attach rate for software on it was such garbage, a good amount of people only owned it for DVDs), and it led to a lot of shovelware and marketing towards the more casual gamer. The idea of selling it as a DVD player with games is also why the hardware was arguably shit (noticeably worse specs than the Gamecube and the original Xbox), because they wanted to keep the cost down. Sound familiar?

The only major differences between the two are the gimmick and the library. That's it.

And yet the PS2 had the best library of the 3.

And yet the PS2 had the best library of the 3.
Not denying that at all. Just making a point. A console can be gimmick-based and still be good. All depends on the strength of the library.

Edit: I should add that the PS2 only had the best library due to its exclusives, almost all its multiplatform offerings were worse than its counterparts. Maybe there's hope for the Xbone?

The PS2 didn't just have a better library than the systems you mentioned, it had arguably one of the greatest libraries of all time.  Was there a lot of shovelware?  Yes.  But its relative to the massive size of the library.  The life cycle of the system was insane and nothing like we had ever seen before.

Well I have to say I am, and always have been, in the boat that a DVD player is not a gimmick. It was a brilliant and natural advancement that is now an industry standard.

Gimmicks dont have staying power, mass appeal, or set standards.

Well, I think basing a system around selling a DVD player makes it a gimmick, but agree to disagree.

I wouldn't consider upgrades to storage and formats are gimmicks. If that's the case, we can go back to NES with building in save features on cartridges. These kind of upgrades are necessary to make advancements. Waggle is not.

That's not what I'm saying. The original Xbox had DVD support (via a Playback Kit) and I wouldn't say it was a gimmick for the console. I call it a gimmick because it was integral to the PS2's image/sales pitch (like I said the idea was to sell you a DVD player that can play games too). Like the original Xbox's gimmick would be Xbox Live. It doesn't make it a bad thing, but I still think of it as a gimmick.

Full party control is nice, but it makes the game way too easy because the game was designed with AI in mind, and full party control decimates any challenge since it wasn't restructured to accommodate for the new features. The new social links are really good for the female lead, but you get the most of out them if you know the P3 universe inside and out. The Answer isn't the selling point for FES, since it's lackluster as a whole, and you get the same experience by youtubing it, but for me a big part of the experience in P3 was its wonderful atmosphere and presentation, which is obviously scaled down significantly in the portable version.

I'm saying this as someone who loves the game, but maybe the portability is really all you need, but as great as P3P is, I would never call it the definitive version of the game.

I really just take that as marketing. Something new isn't necessarily a gimmick. Like someone else said, gimmicks usually don't last and stick around. Sony does this with all their consoles. PS1 with CDs and PS3 with blu ray. Whatever new format PS5 uses, they'll make sure to preach the hell out of it. Microsoft did do the same with XBL, but I wouldn't consider that a gimmick either, again because of the whole necessary to advance the industry thing.

We wouldn't have the games we have without Nintendo.
We wouldn't have some of the media formats to play them without Sony.
We wouldn't have the online infrastructure we have in gaming without Microsoft.

All three companies have made advancements in the industry. We definitely wouldn't have the need for shitty shovelware without Nintendo's waggle, so we can thank them for that too.
