We wouldn't have the games we have without Nintendo.
We wouldn't have some of the media formats to play them without Sony.
We wouldn't have the online infrastructure we have in gaming without Microsoft.

All three companies have made advancements in the industry. We definitely wouldn't have the need for shitty shovelware without the PS EyeToy and Nintendo's waggle, so we can thank them for that too.

Yea...I don't know how anybody considers a company offering an in-demand technology upgrade in their console at a significantly lower price a "gimmick".

I have not played P3P, but I have played both the original P3 and FES. The Answer is definitely skippable but still worth youtubing. I didn't find it to be as grindy as people said, but it was irritating, and it takes a lot of time to play through for what little you get out of it.

As for P3P, it benefits largely from the lessens Atlus learned between P3 and P4. Stuff like having more social links with your party members and controlling them in combat are things P4 did. I do have to wonder if playing FeMC first is a good idea though. I've seen people say it completely changes the tone of the game, and a lot of people that then prefer her (perhaps from having played her first?) get upset when her story isn't considered "canon" and she is never brought up again.

And a note about not being able to control your party members: I may have been one of the few people that didn't mind it in P3. It made combat faster, and you generally could always predict what the AI would do and plan accordingly. The actions performed by the main character were always the most important and if you play smart you never have any real problems. The other characters are just there so you don't get focus fired by the enemy. It wasn't until I played The Answer that I finally understood why people found it to be so irritating.

Appreciate the response. All I wanted to know earlier is why Sony was exempt from your doomsaying. Even when you isolate the gaming division it's still not historically been as profitable as Nintendo. The PS4 has great momentum but it sells at a loss while the Wii U does not. Sony gambled and it'll likely pay off sooner than anyone expected. But they are two different companies with different philosophies. Do I wish Nintendo had the most amazing, top of the line hardware? Absolutely. Do I think Nintendo has made several stupid moves? Absolutely. I'm no apologist, but I also recognize that Nintendo, somehow, has managed to not only survive, but thrive, in an industry beset on all sides with new competitors and changes. It's disingenuous to suggest a company of its size can sustain the losses Playstation or Xbox have, or operate at such ridiculously thin margins. Microsoft paid out over 1 billion in RROD repairs alone. Shit like that will never happen at Nintendo. Sales & revenue=/=profit.

Yes, I'm equally as tired of the motion control/waggle nonsense. Give us choices, at least. Yes, the Wii U should have been more powerful, and yes, it'd be nice if it was cheaper. But that doesn't mean their strategy should be to go head to head with Sony. N64...Gamecube..each equally as or more powerful than their Playstation counterparts yet still demolished sales-wise.

-The Wii U has been out for 1 1/2 years, not 2 1/2
-Nintendo's net loss was 229 billion. Their operating loss was ~500 million, so that's not a fair comparison. Sony's was 1 BILLION.
-Nintendo has a forecast of ~400 million in profit for the next year. Sony has forecast of ~500 million in losses. Again, I do not know where you are getting the idea Nintendo is the one we should be most concerned for.
-As a side (since it was mentioned above), Nintendo still pulled in more profit during the Gamecube/PS2 era. Yes, I know GBA had a lot do with it. Point stands.

There are two definitions of gimmick.  The general definition of a gimmick is something to differentiate yourself from your competition in order to make people want your product.  The other definition is the one with the negative connotation that means some bullshit that is used to hook people but is really dumb.

What do you guys think about trophies and achievements? Do you think all Final fantasy games before XIII sucked because they didn't have trophies/achievements?

XIII is the best because of the trophies. Plus the higher the sequel, the better the game.

 
Also, Canada wins. I'm going to root for my second favorite NHL team, the Ducks. Other than the Bruins, they're the only team I love more than anything.

They're still in the playoffs, right?
 
All this Nintendo vs Sony talk is missing some key financial points. Or burying them in long discourses.

Bottom line is that the Sony conglomerate, while terribly unhealthy, managed to produce operating income. The net loss was the result of write offs associated with restructuring (sale of the PC business, etc) and write downs (devaluing bluray manufacturing assets and IP in light of slowing sales). They've got more painful restructuring to do, but the fact that there's positive cash flow suggests they're salvageable.

Nintendo has an operating loss and doesn't have underperforming businesses to restructure, sell, or spinoff. They're gaming's sick man. I love Big N and hope they can survive by eating into cash, stemming Wii U losses, and limping into the next console generation.

Microsoft made such a stupid decision locking up DVD playback on the first Xbox by requiring an arbitrary accessory. It's also equally stupid that Voodoo Vince was never made BC. I still have that game in my collection despite no Xbox to play.

the time of day I play is apparently when they perform maintenance so I've only been able to gaze at the selection longingly, unable to play anything.

On an unrelated note (and speaking of gimmicks?) has anyone actually been using the 'real name friends' feature on the ps4? I don't get it - was there a demand to be able to take your intimate playstation friend relationship to the next level? looking forward to being able to go together with my playstation real name friends in a future update.
