When I look at this list in all it's accuracy, I'm glad I didn't waste my time after playing that shitty first game

I don't think anything about it now when a game has an embargo. Just as many highly reviewed games have them these days as poorly reviewed ones.
There's a few whack-jobs out there that for some reason really enjoy the 1st AC. But it's terribly boring and you should give AC2 a shot.

If you want to play the first Ass Creed, just play through the first assassination. Everything after that is exactly the same. I wish I was lying, but I'm really not. You do three side quests to get information, which are all the same, regardless of your target, and then you assassinate. After that, you run away, rinse, and repeat.

then watch the ending on YouTube. I liked that part and it might help a little storywise later.

Also, honestly, the story of the first game isn't even that important when compared to the series as a whole. You can easily Wikipedia what the game is about and start with the second game.

The only reason to play the first game is so you can say "Holy shit, I can't believe how improved the second game is" with the rest of us who had to suffer through the first.

If you want to play the first Ass Creed, just play through the first assassination. Everything after that is exactly the same. I wish I was lying, but I'm really not. You do three side quests to get information, which are all the same, regardless of your target, and then you assassinate. After that, you run away, rinse, and repeat.
Exactly why I never gave the rest a chance. I was being facetious though... I'm not about to argue that the series is anywhere near as horrible as that first game. I know I'm probably missing out on some good stuff but I've got enough on my plate that I'm not too concerned about what I'm missing.

The coolest thing about the first game was the leap of faith to the sound of that screech... and that got old after I did it twice.

Why wait til next month to get watchdogs for 20 when you can get it and the collector's edition strategy guide for $48+tax (including rz certs) total with the bestbuy deal.

Then you can trade the game in for that much and pick it up again when super cheap if you really like it. Idk but worked out well with southpark.

Aside from the first game and the random mobile/handheld crap, the series is one of my favorite. This also means we can expect a post from affa about how Ass Creed is single handedly destroying the gaming industry.

count me in the camp of those who skipped AC1 and started with 2.  I cant even imagine going back to AC1 now, 2 feels really clunky going back to it after Black Flag.

I recently replayed 2, and I do agree that it was a little clunky. But it's still my favorite because of the fact that it was just so simple. No extra objectives, no needing to hire assassins and sending them on missions. And 2 is where they really broke the mythology of the series open and made you think it could really be the start of something awesome.

Series spoilers below:

Based on what I've heard and seen about Black Flag, they kind of threw the mythology out the window. I'm hoping it comes back though. The whole first civilization/Juno and Minerva stuff was so awesome. I know they make appearances, but I'm hoping we don't just lose everything Desmond and crew did.

My list of Assassin's Creed games, from good to bad:

1) Assassin's Creed

1) AC Brotherhood (It could be a tossup with 1, since Cesare Borgia really elevated this game)

3) AC Black Flag

4) AC 2

5) AC3

6) Revelations
Strange.

There's a few whack-jobs out there that for some reason really enjoy the 1st AC. But it's terribly boring and you should give AC2 a shot.
Not strange.

You suffered through it? I turned that shit off and threw away the disc after about an hour of gameplay. It was just by chance that I heard how much improved the second game was so I gave Ass Creed 2 a shot and loved it.

If Steamworld Dig, OlliOlli, Luftrausers, or Mutant Mudds goes on sale tomorrow I will be so happy!
I want to purchase all of these games and a triple trade of Tearaway at Target tomorrow would help that out. I hope you're as good at predicting the future as you are at stealing games.

Both my roommates told me how amazing it was, so I kept playing and waiting for something awesome. The only reason I even gave 2 a chance was because it came out while I was stranded in bed after a broken leg. I didn't have much else to play at the time, and was out of work on medical leave while not being paid for it. The young me said "I'll never have a reason to use the long term disability benefit!" so I opted out of it and not even two weeks later some chick turns left in front of me, while I'm doing 50. My car flipped twice and plowed into a gas station, narrowly missing the pumps and almost blowing the place to pieces. Somehow I ended up with just a broken leg, and an unpaid 6 month vacation from work. I could only afford one game at the time and it ended up being AC2.

The insurance determined the chick was at fault. We lawyered up and got almost $50k in the bank after medical bills were paid.

Don't under estimate Tyler's prediction power. Tyler said put Flower and Slam Bolt Scrappers on sale and what does Sony do the next day? They put them on sale.

Wow, just think how close we were to not having the captian around!

I look at AC1, and sure, it had its faults but the potential to be something really good. I don't think ditching Altair and going with Ezio for 3 games was the right idea. I think Brotherhood was the pinnacle of the series, but it evolved into a much different game than 1 tried to bring.

I recall the E3 being that AC1 was to have living crowds, and sure, the interactions were nice, limited though and many were put off due to its repetitive nature.

Damn. Glad to know it worked out (although having something broken in a leg means it never works out).

I remember when we started debating buying a house in here. That sure elicited stories.

P1, p2, p3p, odin sphere, gungnir, growlanser. Buy or bust?
I'd grab the P's and Growlanser. I love SRPGs but Gungnir just didnt click with me for some reason. Odin Sphere gets a pass simply since its not playable on Vita.

So you want him to be wrong?

I expect to get my GAF updates from you so I don't have to visit there.
Well I'm going to keep posting them. Every time I see something ultra stupid on another website, I always get pissed that my hyper-critical PSN thread associates aren't around to mercilessly make fun of it.

I'm glad your the lucky person to inform us. Keep up the great work.

How long is the atlus sale on for? I was thinking of getting persona 1 + 2 + 3 as well as crimson gem saga.

/edit .. .figure i can play these all on my vita if they're good

Yes to P3P, Gungnir, and Growlanser IMO. No to the other three.

I don't think anything about it now when a game has an embargo. Just as many highly reviewed games have them these days as poorly reviewed ones.
If you watch TB's The Mailroom videos, he just talked about this a week or so ago. He said the embargoes aren't to hold back news of a game, but rather because the first site to post a review is going to get a ton of traffic. The embargo is to make it so people don't just throw a review out there for clicks; they give out the game, put in a waiting period, and that helps review sites stay a bit more honest by putting time in it. Supposedly. Also it allows smaller reviewers, who don't have a huge staff that can be thrown at a game list, to have time to get a review out at the same time as everybody else.

Question for you guys, Can I still get in on the $10 PS3 to PS4 upgrade promo, or is it too late? I bought a copy of AC4: Black Flag at launch and redeemed the upgrade code, but didn't purchase a PS4 up until earlier this month.

Now when I looked up AC4: BF on the PS4 psn store, the game is showing 59.99 for me, is there a certain way about doing the upgrade?

If not and turns out it's too late, I will just trade it in to Target tomorrow (if the TiV holds) for 26.XX  and just hold out on a sale on the PS4 version.

Thanks for any help.

The Digital Upgrade program has ended. Disc-based codes needed to be redeemed before 3/31/14 and are no longer valid.

You'd think with the last 25 years of 2D fighting games people would pick up at least some sort of basic understanding on how a game works. Not everyone grew up in the arcade, but expecting someone to hold your hand through every step of just learning how to play a game is ridiculous.

The joy in fighting games originally came from seeing a move list, attempting a few and seeing what that move did in relation to others. Then you adapt, learn, and better yourself with what you've accomplished so far. Those tutorials are decent for people who've never played a fighting game before, but it kills the joy of finding things out on your own.

Then again we live in a world where the most popular games have hour-long segments of just walking and having people talk at you to explain everything that could be done by just playing the game on your own, so who knows.
I haven't played a 2D fighting game in any meaningful way since one of the versions of Street Fighter II on the SNES, which was about 20 years ago and that was just a rental that I played for a weekend with a friend. I'm sorry to bust your perception that everybody has played 2D fighters to death and don't need good tutorials, but that's the truth.

Companies that make fighting games not only want the hardcore crowd to get involved, but also new people that don't play them much or at all that would want a training and/or tutorial mode so that they can learn the nuances of the gameplay to go beyond button mashing. You either go the Divekick route and give it a simple control system that anybody could understand or you do tutorials like Skullgirls to show the player all of the mechanics and moves it offers with feedback on why it's better to crouch block versus stand block and all that. Not everybody is an expert at a genre that has gotten increasingly complicated over the years, so I'd think anybody jumping into the genre that has an interest in broadening their audience would include a good tutorial to show those unfamiliar with that specific game or the genre as a whole what's going on.

If I'm just supposed to look at the movelist and just mess around with it, it usually ends up with me button mashing through an arcade mode until I get frustrated and quit because they don't expect somebody that doesn't know what they're doing to bother playing their game. But when they give their games out on PS+ (KOFXIII, SFIVAE, SFxTK, SKE). they're giving them to everybody out there from experts to newbies, so they blow their chance at attracting those newbies without a decent tutorial mode to educate them on the game.

They're very different games. The first AC is a big sandbox game where you're mostly given free reign to roam the city, explore to find those flags, and eventually complete the missions leading up to the assassination. The second is more of a traditional open world game where you run around to do missions and occasionally explore to collect things or do side stuff in the limited amount of space that is opened up to you in a much more structured fashion. It's like the difference between Crackdown (ACI) and Grand Theft Auto (ACII).

You guys don't think Persona 1 + 2 are worth playing before 3 and 4?
They're play very differently from the last two games and are not necessary to play first unless you want more of that series after playing P3 and P4. They're good games, but are just products of that era of JRPGs that haven't aged that well for most people.

They should end on Tuesday since most Atlus sales last for one week. The X in the OP means they'll end with the next update.

Cool thanks, I may still pick them up because I'm cool with playing the older games. Just started the final fantasy series at Origins lol

SFxTk has a pretty decent tutorial, but that game is essentially for newbies already so it doesn't really count for much. As far as them being given to subscribers, that alone should entice newcomers to the games as it is. Having an extensive tutorial shouldn't really factor into the value of the game since you're already getting it for 'free'. Yes, it's good for people completely new to fighting games, but the majority of people who play fighting games casually just pick them up and mash with friends. That is the casual market when they sell the game to people. Stuff like Injustice and Marvel vs. Capcom is sold to entice people with names they recognize and have it running at a party with a bunch of people.

I thought Ezio was/is a monumentally unlikable douche-bag, and the support cast in AC2 is so gratingly horrible it was like listening to someone having taco bell diarrhea through a megaphone every time they interrupted the game to talk.

Stopped playing about halfway through AC2 because I just couldn't stand having the damn hacking-club interject some completely trite piece of unneeded exposition dialogue whenever I'd find something remotely interesting in the world. Completely ruined the immersion-factor over what the first game had.

Revelations bringing Altair back was something I'd been wanting to check out, but your ranking list is making me think again...

Otherwise, I guess I'll just continue being a "whack-job" by liking AC1. Glad to see I'm not alone in that regard.

One of your favorites, eh? I'll decide whether or not to give it another try based on my enjoyment of your other recommendation, Hot Shots. They're pretty much the same thing.

Most you guys really don't go on GAF then? You miss terrible awesome things like this:

As if the review isn't enough to make you want to choke someone, 14 of 19 people found the review helpful.

I almost blew up the internet after I read this... had my finger on the button but then I thought "What would all the stupid people do with their free time if there were no internet?"

Got a few laughs at the responses at least.

Yes, people that play fighting games don't need the tutorials, but those that don't play them could certainly use them to move past the button mashing phase and have a better chance of enjoying them. Being free via PS+ isn't really enough of an incentive for non-fighting fans to play them if there isn't anything of substance to show them how to play when they can easily go play something else that isn't so demanding of their time to enjoy, especially when they have so many other options with a PS+ sub. It's a case of whether they want to appeal to the same audience they already have in their pockets or expanding a bit to be more inclusive of those outside of that niche. I don't know why anybody would argue against the need for tutorials.
