Perhaps not underrated, but probably under most people's radars, I think (at least in the West). Particularly for those that have a PS3, but not a Vita, like me. This looks totally like my type of game, and somehow I have either never heard of it or had forgotten all about it before it came out.
Yes, get it! It's just so intriguing when you have to deduce which of your teammates are traitors. Even when you guess wrong, it's interesting when your former comrades understandably get livid about being put to death. LOL!

I'm sure you've been asked this before, but why is your username named after Mad Catz? Most of their products have been crap throughout the company's history save for the SF4 product line.

Wait, are you being serious?
Yes completely serious. I played Disgaea Infinite before getting into the main games. They introduce all of the characters and you very quickly get to know who is who, what the Prinny characters are, and so on dood. The main thing is to actually like the whole find-your-fate style of gaming mixed with rewinding time to try and influence different outcomes. It's really a pretty fun experience... and you don't need to have any Disgaea background to enjoy it.

The best SRPGs ranked in order:

- Fire Emblem  Radiant Dawn

- Fire Emblem Path of Radiance

- XCOM 2

- Final Fantasy Tactics

- Fire Emblem: Awakening

- Ogre Battle Tactics

- Vandal Hearts 2

- Jeanne D'Arc (most underrated, too)

- Valkyrie Chronicles (originality gets points here)

- XCOM EU

This list is totally official as deemed by the Global Strategy Role Playing Game Association.

EDIT: Honorable mention: The first Disgaea

Wow xcom 2 is that good? I really liked the earlier xcom on the 360 (i wont say first bc thats the old pc original) but kinda slept on this sequel. What makes it better than xcom EU?

I definitely understand his frustration with underrated titles because mine would have to be Lost Dimension, a vastly underrated and very original title IMO. I want to someone to hit me in the head so I can experience it all over again.
That is indeed a lot of fun, but becomes way too easy by the end of the game, and NG+ gets easier even faster as nothing is done to increase the difficulty of the enemies.

Did the consoles get Enemy Within? Because I would say Xcom 2 is better than EU but not as good as EW. It's kind of a weird middle ground between them in terms of features, but 2 is absolutely worth playing. Its inevitable expansion should make it the definitive game.

How is ZHP? I know not all NIS games are created equal, and I like its style, at least.
It is tricky to balance rogue-likes that offer permanent upgrades. Too little emphasis and it feels like they are meaningless. Too much emphasis and it creates grind walls that no matter your ability, you will have to stop and make several trips into earlier dungeons to level up so that you can pass it. I hit a grind wall in ZHP and lost interest.

This is the first game in a really, really, long time that I have stayed up playing until 3am, 5am, etc. Cannot put it down. It is fine tuned to perfection, IMO. The best SRPG to come out in years hands down. If you like EU, go out and buy this right now. You won't be disappointed.

Disclosure: Loading times can be long. There are occasional glitches and crashes. But I give this game a 10/10.

EDIT: fwiw, I enjoy challenging game play and for the most part, this game rewards careful planning. There are so many different styles you can play with, too. The new "concealment" game play is really awesome. It gives you the chance to ambush enemies, among other things. Great balance in the game, too, but hands down Rangers are the most lethal, useful of all classes.

Yep, it is.. 2K Denies it, but I can see the denial as part of a way to get as much as they can before it goes F2P
Also, Evolve went F2P. but only on PC.. not console yet.
Randy Pritchard confirmed the other day that it is getting a few to play trial version that can upgrade to the full game, but they're still working out the details.

I honestly loved Mysteria

Also where is the Shining Force series?

But seriously, I never could get into most SRPGs because of how the character's stats and skills are based on their actions in combat, instead of the entire party getting XP (which is why I loved Mysteria)

I hit a grind wall in ZHP and lost interest.
Grinding in an NIS game????? Holy moley!

eh your not missing out the games a mess. balance is crap, objects can block shots for no rhyme or reason and other times the enemy can shoot right through them and thats on top of shitty hit detection, mega death tank chapter, story writing seems like it was written by a 4 year old after reading about world war 2. My favorite thing was when I threw a grenade and it bounced under or through the enemy tank. or the lancers bazooka missing the giant rock slabs and most objects in general. Or all the times where I was point blank to an enemies face with a machine gun and they can miss/dodge it.

I'll give it points for the unique combat engine but man the game needed some quality control and tlc.
Oh, you're talking about Valkryia Chronicles. I didn't have most of the issues you had. I sure wouldn't say it's crap, and I know tons of people loved the story. My biggest gripe with it is that the scoring system rewarded speed over all other variables, which meant the 'best' way to play was scout rush. I would have -greatly- preferred a scoring system which rewarded low team damage, etc. I wanted to play slow and tactical, not rush, and that hurt the game overall for me.

lost dimension isn't underrated or at the very least I've seen nothing but praise for it in comparison to natural doctrine which was panned from the get go ignoring that its tagline was prepare to die or something like that over and over and over and over again.

It sounds like you're reviewing two games you haven't played. Critics panning ND means almost nothing - most reviewers don't put enough time into games, and ND requires you learn it's systems. Most of the reviews make it -very- clear the reviewers did not understand the mechanics. They'd complain about getting hit 50 times by a troop of orcs, when they should have been slaughtering those lowly orcs using the same mechanics the orcs used to slaughter them. If you give time to ND, it will reward you with stellar mechanics. They're just wildly different than anyone has seen before.

LD sounds pretty cool. I have heard negative reviews, though, mostly about the 'replayable' part of the story being too luck based. I am very much looking forward to buying it on sale though.

How is ZHP? I know not all NIS games are created equal, and I like its style, at least.
It's worth picking up. I paid full price back so I could play it on my Vita back when it never went on sale.

It's a roguelike, though you start at level 1 every time you enter a dungeon [but keep various upgrades so you're always 'stronger']. There's a plot to follow, and some interesting mechanics. Iiirc, inventory has a disgaea feel [like most nis games in related genres].

my biggest issue with it was that there is a sort of 'meta-game' where you use base building to increase your overall capabilities. On paper, this sounds cool. In practice, I found it obtuse, confusing, and unfun to the point that I basically burnt out on the game.

That said, I do think it's worth the chance if you like roguelikes and/or nis games.

I honestly loved Mysteria

Also where is the Shining Force series?

But seriously, I never could get into most SRPGs because of how the character's stats and skills are based on their actions in combat, instead of the entire party getting XP (which is why I loved Mysteria)
Trying to plan srpgs so certain chars get the kills or grinding the same move over and over is the worst. Thankfully some don't do this.

Conceptually, I get why someone tried this idea... it sounds cool to only get better at something if you do it. In practice, however, it's awful as you intentionally have some giant rat gnaw on a character so another character can keep casting heal.

Did the consoles get Enemy Within? Because I would say Xcom 2 is better than EU but not as good as EW. It's kind of a weird middle ground between them in terms of features, but 2 is absolutely worth playing. Its inevitable expansion should make it the definitive game.
i think even the vita version is EW.

Post deals, not your FAQ walkthrough.
We all have backlogs that last a thousand years, yet cry every time a week doesn't pile on enough sales to further our misery/addiction. Part of that addiction is reading about games to add to said backlog, so we know more about games we'll never play. In order for this cycle to continue peacefully without the world imploding, some of us actually need to play some small subset of the games so we can discuss them. Without those players, we'd only have the people who like to shit upon games they've never played, and where would be then? Newark.

Turns out that Best Buy doesn't even have the item at all in their database. Guess it's best to wait and hope that the price doesn't change and try to price match Target when it comes out.
Oh yeah, i forgot that it isnt listed on best buy yet, im sure the listing will be up soon though. Keep an eye out for it

But reading your posts takes away from my gaming time.

And don't bad mouth Newark. Whenever I get to name a sports team in a game, I call them the Newark Carjackers.

Actually, I just could never get in to SRPGs. Too much planning and aiming and being at the right height. FFT and Disagea were fun but then there were RULES and things I had to be mindful of. It became work. Valkyria Chronicles was great the amount I played it but same thing. And then one of my guys dies and it's PERMANENT?!? fuck that. If someone's gonna die, it better be in a cut scene that I can't be blamed for.

All in all, this is a good sale for me.

I already own, unfortunately, most of the Lego games on disc.

I remember that I don't like SRPGs and certainly don't have time for a new one now.

I'm sure they'll be on sale many times before I get around to play them.

Backlog unchanged.

My PSVR pre-order finally shipped a few minutes ago from Amazon. It says I'll get it by 8 PM tomorrow, so I probably won't get much time into it until Friday.

Looks like my PSVR Amazon order shipped but has been delayed in CA according to UPS. I was hoping to test it out tomorrow, but I suppose Friday works as I was ultimately setting time aside for the weekend anyway. I'll post some honest thoughts on it if people are interested. I'm going into the whole VR thing with an open mind, no expectation or biases.

Which version of Natural Doctrine is best? Thinking about picking it up since I doubt it'll get any cheaper.

Yes I have xcom EW as well but by the time I got it (on sale) I was playing other games an it got stuck in the backlog. Then my PS4 came along and now I cant even play my 360 because I love my PS4 so much more.

Been enjoying 100ft Robot Golf a good bit. It's a silly golf game where it's more of a race to finish first than get the better score as you knock down buildings, block your opponent's shot, and move quickly to win each hole. The campaign's a nice throwback to the crappy anime of the 80s and the commentary by the McElroy brothers is nice and silly. There's even a cool Saints Row-themed skin for your golfing robot that was a surprise to see.

For some reason I always had it in my head that it was just another port. Guess I'll pick that up then.

Perhaps not underrated, but probably under most people's radars, I think (at least in the West). Particularly for those that have a PS3, but not a Vita, like me. This looks totally like my type of game, and somehow I have either never heard of it or had forgotten all about it before it came out.
It's a pretty well known title as far as jrpgs go. To people who don't normally play them I could see how it'd go under the radar. It also helped that its published by atlus so anyone who is a fan of their games and or has an email newsletter sub will know about it. I and many others scored a copy for half off from gohastings a while back.

hmm maybe try the fire emblem titles like awakening and fates? They have settings to ignore the perma death for them and don't have alot of rules you need to pay attention to like in other srpgs. sony wise arc the lad 1 and 4 are also good. Though they do have a height system in 1 I think but most maps don't use it.

Does anyone know how often NIS puts their games on sale? I'm interested in getting Disgaea 5 digital, and the disc rarely even hits $40, but I can wait if there should be further and deeper discounts in the future. Or is this the buy in point for the next year or two?

I'm looking forward to hearing PSVR impressions tomorrow from anyone who's getting it at launch. Let us know what you think.
I'm interested in the feedback as well. I like the general concept... but I think the reality of it is going to be a mixed bag due to the resolution, how people react differently first person games, and a sever software drought (common to new addons). I know for myself that going back to old FPS's just gives me a headache after a while... I'd imagine any high action in this will do the same. One guy in the PSVR thread already mentioned how Drive Club VR gave him a headache after one race. Others have posted stuff on other sites about feeling nausea and getting headaches. So it'll be a great experience for some but for many it will prove too much which will just create too much negative feedback.

I know there has been a lot of investment to make consumer level VR... but I have a bad feeling this is going to end up on a similar level to past addon devices. I just hope if this does fail that it doesn't have the same kind of negative backlash like what Sega had during the Genesis/32X/SegaCD fiasco. The main plus is PS4 Pro doesn't fractionalize the market making one set of gamers feel left out. VR though, in some cases will. Especially anything that is VR only.

Yeah, I think VR is just too niche to be a success at this point and Sony is almost surely going to give up on it as soon as it sees it as their next Vita (which is likely already does). VR just has too many hurdles both technologically and from a marketing standpoint to be anything else right now. One day it will get there, but for right now, it's looking like PS VR has a good chance of being relegated to a similar place in history as the other peripherals/add-ons you mentioned. I imagine we'll be seeing few games in production and the VR units themselves on clearance within a year or so.

I hope I'm wrong since I'd like to see Sony succeed and like to see people enjoy the product and would also like to see future iterations and improvements.

Decently often, but not too often...maybe 3-4 times a year? It's not like the Atlus stuff that pops up every month or so.

I'm here to say that VR is a gimmick. I have tried every VR out today and I have tried out some cool tech they are adding to it in the future (Samsung has a pair of headphones that make you feel like you're moving.)

It is cool for 15 minutes. After that, it's whatever. And after that, it's no thanks. It is cool for experiences, but gaming? IDK. To each their own, I guess. I still prefer couch.

Also, the military has been using VR experiences for a while now. Their headsets cost $80,000 a pop. VR motion sickness is very real; if you're in the military and were training for a prolonged period with VR, you are forbidden to operate heavy machinery or drive a vehicle for 24 hours. The side effects on the brain linger for a while. This is an actual rule in the military.

Just my two bits. Again, to each their own. If you get a VR, I hope you really enjoy it. I really do.

So should one expect the original PS4 to go on sale the day the Pro releases, later, or is now a good a time as any?
Wait because the slim just launched and one the pro launches you'll at least have a chance at snagged a original model as someone's clearing then out. That just happened recently with VCR model Xbox systems and the slim has been out longer. Not to mention a better deal occurred on the slim than what original models were clearanced for. Plus holidays are officially happening at most retailers already so you don't pay full price for any big ticket item right now. Basically everything in existence will go on sale sometime within the next four months.
