He's brutal all right, but my personal favorite boss of the entire game. That entire section of the game is it's high point.

Nothing annoys me more than playing for an hour, dying and have to start way back where you started. At least in my experience, the checkpoints are further apart than any Souls game I have played. The shortcuts are far more subtle than usual, but I do agree the checkpoints did seem rather far apart. Especially in the beginning when you suck and really need them.

Never spent an hour between checkpoints on Bloodborne, More like 15 minutes at most for each section. And don't think I ever lost a blood stain except to bosses, so even when you do die it just means you get extra blood echoes for clearing out the area a second time, so you don't feel like you flushed any time down the drain. I'm a really shitty player too so it's not that.

You might just be missing the checkpoints? Or maybe you're missing the shortcuts? Just like in the first Dark Souls (not so much Dark Souls II), lots of "checkpoints" are actually hidden shortcuts you have to seek out to unlock that connect a later area back to the same lantern. Bloodborne actually has WAY more consistent checkpoints than Souls--like WAY more to the point that it's noticeable that they were probably trying to cut down on the anxiety of Souls bonfire scarcity. If you think there are fewer checkpoints than Souls, you are probably missing the shortcuts. Because I and most Souls players will agree Borne has way more than Souls.

Just like in Souls, if you're struggling in one section it's pretty easy to go somewhere else, clear it out and level your character up enough that you won't struggle anymore. I remember Priestess Elissia being a struggle, giving up on her for a bit and clearing out the Witches left of the Cathedral (really easy area with tons of echoes), then coming back to Elissia and almost being upset how easy she was the second time with my character leveled up.

p.s. if you're pre-Gascoigne yeah, that intro section is a baptism by fire for lots of players. It's incredibly rewarding once you get through it and beat Gascoigne. Have fun with the difficulty and bask in the pain. Some of my favorite streams (hell, only streams I've watched) are Souls virgins playing Bloodborne. It's a really great intro and it's amazing to watch the player transformation as they struggle to "git gud". Really rewarding games and worth revisiting.

The only Souls game I've actually completed was Demons Souls. But even the others I've played, I've gotten further than Bloodborne.

So, yes. I suck and readily admit it.

Why I own every Souls game and haven't completed any but the first? I have a problem.

I am finding Nioh to be more rewarding even with the difficulty. Perhaps the more linear nature is more suited to me.

Bloodborne was my first FS game that I actually played through also and platted it within a week after launch. It wasn't as challenging as I thought it would be. The 15 minutes or so that I played DS2, I felt was more tough.

I really need to play the rest though, just got to put some time aside for them.
