Do you not remember how shitty PSN was back in the PS3 days? I rather pay $60 (and who here really pays that) for a year of reliable PSN then return to the crap we had before. I played most online games on my 360 back then. Live was better IMO.
I had no problems with PS3 online. You really think paying to play online makes your experience better? Research MLB The Show 17's server errors and other online problems it had. The devs had to give free in game content to customers as a way of saying sorry and the servers remained bad all year. That is a Sony exclusive game too. Why didn't the cost of PS+ make their experience perfect like many here claim paying does? How does an exclusive Sony game that you have to pay extra to play online suck so hard? Shouldn't it be flawless because millions of gamers are paying $60 a year?

All I can say is I had much better experiences with PSN over the last few years then I did previously. It costs money to run a large network. $5 a month (if you pay full price) doesn't seem that bad to me.

So Fortnite proves you don't need to charge money for online play. That's my whole point. PS3 had the perfect setup. Online play is free and you had the option of paying if you wanted to rent random games every month and get discounts. OPTION is the key word here. Online play was free. Fortnite and other games prove that you can still keep the online play free and make money.
You fundamentally are misunderstanding issues. Fortnite proves nothing in regards to PSN. For that is a successful free to play game that profits off of DLC like costumes. There are no costumes for PSN to sell. It is not the game. It is the infrastructure. Comparing infrastructure to a game is ridiculous to begin with.

People will always find ways to justify consumerism. I wouldn't be surprised if those people were all libertarians who think free market capitalism means the corporations who charge them money to unlock content already on the disc are entirely accountable to consumers for said practice, when they've already proven that they'll adhere to exploitative corporate business models just to play current games. I'm sure that once we see net neutrality repealed we'll also be getting posts about how great it is paying premiums for more bandwidth to reduce lag in multiplayer.
Oh please, first of all stop trying to guess what other people think or believe. People aren't defending Sony, they are responding to an point of view that fundamentally misunderstands the core issues at play. We can have a discussion all day about how online should be free, but if someone starts out comparing it to fortnite you're going to end up with people explaining Sony's point of view. That's not defending, that's being forced to side against ignorance.

Meanwhile, in our hobby it's pretty much impossible not to support bad policies. We don't even own what we buy anymore. We're all guilty of that, but on the other hand there's absolutely nothing we can do about it short of piracy. That creates an ethical issue of whether you support Developers or not despite standard practices.

You absolutely do own the game if you buy physical. I am only bringing up Fortnite because it does have infrastructure in place.  How else would it be able to support millions of people playing it online?  Sony was free last gen with online.  Plenty of people still paid extra to rent games and get discounts.  Sony could have absolutely still kept online free this gen and plenty of people would have still paid for PS+. Giving customers options is not a bad thing.  It's nice to know there are game devs out there that realize free online gives more gamers access to play their games. You don't think free online play wouldn't give Sony a huge advantage over the competition?  It's something Nintendo should advertise but it looks like in 4 months they will also start charging for online.  PC is free and no one here seems to understand why.  If PC can be free, the other companies can be too.

I get why so many people feel the need to stick up for paying M$ or Sony to play their games online.  Many have stated they only pay to rent the games and get discounts.  Others might not care about that and just pay to play games online.  Makes no sense to me but if Sony and M$ want less gamers online, that's their right.

Tell that to the people with discs of MAG. ;)

While some libertarian aspects are appealing, I dont know many who, when pinned down, would say that pure free market capitalism is "perfect." I'll say one thing though, I think the reason these video game 'practices' are accepted is because the price of games, particularly of the AAA variety, is artificially too low. All games should *not* be $60 MSRP. A game like God of War with high production values and high critical acclaim should fetch a higher price. But for some reason, the industry settled on $60 as the 'acceptable' price. Then then hide the costs elsewhere to make up the difference. I think, implicitly, the vast majority of gamers know this, thus they are okay with paying more for these 'services' cause they know they are getting a reduced cost of the game.

I still remember paying $95 for a copy of Super Street Fighter II on the Genesis in the 90's. And I still think that was a fair price.

Construe that position however you want, but your second paragraph exemplifies your defense of these practices as you put forth the hyperbole that we don't own any games we buy and you can either unethically steal from companies or support them by accepting the practices without even acknowledging the ones that don't pad their wallets with the "standard practice" of charging fees to play online. Scolding me for stating that these dumb apologist stances lead to further limitations and more fees is a bit hypocritical given what you followed that with, but I wouldn't expect anything less from fanboys in their designated thread who seem content to pay for something that was previous free. You're given a few free games a month, with the incentive to buy every console to fully benefit from it, and you're given the opportunity to pay them discounted prices to buy more games. But I don't think that allows for the compliance the business model is escalating towards. Net neutrality passed and will inevitably happen, and I see people adopting the same "we don't own the internet anyway, every ISP does it" attitude in defense of what essentially results in more corporate exaction.

My gaming heyday was back when games were finished on release and online gaming was free (though it still is on 2/4 platforms). I'm against all of the micro-transaction and premium content policies, and anything else implemented that I see as taking advantage of the consumer. Microsoft started charging people to play online, Sony followed suit. The XB1 limits game sharing to the owner of the game, and I wonder how long it'll take Sony to do the same. People should realize they're encouraging these bad practices instead of denying it and defending the companies for starting them.

That's a good point. Some games are definitely better than others, but I think the market reflects that already with games that don't do well typically dropping/tanking/bricking in price shortly after release and celebrated IPs taking much longer to get a discount. Games with marketable pedigree still get shallow discounts, and I think that should be what you're saying makes them worth it and not service fees and surcharges that don't add anything to the game. I'd even include skins on that one, since it's not DLC that adds any value or story whereas something like Wild Hunt or SotFS does.

I'm pretty sure you can gameshare digital games on Xbox One as long as you each give each other your passwords.  There are directions on their official site about it. Sony doesn't allow that to my knowledge and neither does Nintendo.

plz stay on topic guys plzzzzzz tlak about the deals
No, let’s talk politics. I frequently change my political beliefs based on SJW ramblings about the glory that is net-neutrality and how I’ll have to pay for premium packages as soon as it is repealed...months ago now.

Will backpage have its own premium tier?

Yeah I know but it's still free for the next 4 months.

I don't care how Fortnite is doing it or other free to play online games. They find out ways to not charge people a fee to play online. M$ and Sony should be doing the same. It should be included in the cost of the console or game. You are really okay with paying $300-400 or whatever for a new console and then paying $60 for a game and then paying an extra $50-60 a year to unlock content off that game you just bought?? Makes zero sense.
Are you okay paying $300-400 for a console and then having to spend another $60 on a game just to use it? That makes zero sense. Game prices should be part of the console price.

How many times did you look at a thesaurus while writing that post?

You don't own any games you buy. You purchase a license to access the game and the license can be revoked at any time.

It hasn't been repealed yet. There's still a lot of legal stuff going on around it.

A lot of the nickel and diming comes from the base price not increasing. In a lot of ways, those have kept the base games much cheaper for people who don't need them.

Adjusted for inflation, $40 20 years ago is now $61.54, and $60 is now $92.31. Would you rather all these micro-transactions went away, and every game's MSRP is $100-140?

I think I would rather have a $60 game with no costumes than a $100+ game with a bunch of costumes. That's just me though.

Can anyone with a Vita vouch for what Disgaea game I should pick up if I’m only really interested in one? I played the original Disgaea on PS2 back in the day, but haven’t touched the series since then. They’re all on sale now for Golden Week (Disgaea 1 and 2 for $5.99, 3 and 4 for $14.99 IIRC).

Was going to get .hack, but looks like i'd get bored fast. I also have way too many games I haven't played like Gravity Rush 1 & 2.

Game will get cheaper eventually, so rather wait and not buy just because it's on sale. Going to see if Sony has a Golden week 2 sale?
odds are low it will drop further in price. They don't print alot of copies for the .hack series in the past so I doubt they started now.

two is worth playing as it is really easy and was the only serious attempt at them telling a story. I dont rec three because the writing is painfully bad and they break the fourth wall nearly every sentence.

4 has a demo for the vita and is cheaper physical on ps3. I think 3 is also cheap on ps3. the reason being the vita version is an enhanced port for both 3 and 4 iirc.

Finally! Just got the platinum for God of War. What a hell of a ride! I really enjoyed the game but those damn trials were not enjoyable. It got to the point where I saved them for the end game and just wanted to get them over with lol

Yeah, I did the trials in post-game as well and that was when I dropped the difficulty from Normal to Easy since there are no difficulty trophies. Why raise my blood pressure when I don't have to? :D

Out of curiosity, how long did it take you to complete?
There was a day or two I didn’t get on to play at all so I’d say just under 2 weeks. I didn’t use any guide until the end to finish up a couple collectibles and to find the last few ravens I missed so I’d say searching every nook and cranny as I played for those damn things is what really extended my play time the most. If I would have used a guide the entire time I think it can easily be done 100% in a week. That might sound like a negative thing but the production values and pure fun on the game are well worth it. I actually really appreciate games like this where I can go all in and finish it in a reasonable amount of time rather than most games I can never see the end of the tunnel without totally dedicating all of my time and ignoring every other game that comes out or that sits in my backlog.

Did you get an email with a theme from Sony as congratulations as they did for those who platinum'ed Horizon? I try not to get too into trophies, but Im really considering going for the platinum even though I need to move onto the next game in my backlog.

What, no extra plus discounts for star wars pinball this year?  Missed it last time and will continue to wait...

Agree 100%. This is what killed a lot of Eastern games for me. They don't respect your time at all

I much prefer a 10 hour game to a 60 hour game. 60 hour games were nice as a kid with limited money and extra time but now with extra money and limited time, preferences have changed.

No email.....yet lol

Who knows though. I know Horizon did it but if I remember correctly they didn’t start sending them out right away. Also, they may have just done that because it was a new IP and perhaps they were trying to build (more) positive hype around it.

Now that God of War is off my plate I’m not sure what to tackle next...go back to barely chipping away at my current 70 hour playthrough of Nioh Complete Edition or slap the VR headset on and rot my brain cells with some Rick and Morty or the other 100 games I’ve bought and haven’t played yet haha

Fixed it.

For $20 it’s worth it, but it’s not as good as the past GT’s
I disagree. The quantity of content is way less, but quality has gone way up. Previous GTs were chock full of cars and tracks, but they were mostly cosmetic and physical modeling was lackluster. Contrast that with GT Sport which has a tighter focus and every car is modeled beautifully. Online at S-rank is also the cleanest I’ve ever played outside of iRacing. Well worth the $20.
