SUPERBEAT: XONiC

Is it worth the 5.99?
It certainly is tempting at that price. But since it's supposedly on the harder side I think I will pass. I have enough trouble with ff theatrhythm as it is right now.

Games just don't work this way anymore. Pretty much all games require a day 1 patch these days. And I am not sure why people in the Midwest don't have time for downloads. Why is their time more valuable than mine?
Average speeds are FAR slower than for those of us on the coasts. Military people don't get much internet at all (convenient you overlooked that part. And yes, the military's free time is indeed more valuable than yours). Also, I don't like the "it is how it is, therefore it's OK and acceptable" argument. That's a weak justification.

This Spyro situation isnt just some patch. They are deliberately shipping the game unfinished in order to reach a stockholder deadline and then "fixing it" through required downloads.

"Games just dont work like that anymore" Tell that to Nintendo. When I bought Mario Odyssey, Zelda BotW, and Splatoon 2, I opened the package, inserted the game, and immediately started playing. Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and say that should be the norm. Finished products do not need a day 1 patch. Unfinished products do. I say we stop buying unfinished products.

I have Spyro Pre-ordered and I am going to see if they change their stance on this before release.
If they do not I am going to cancel the pre-order. I only pre-ordered the game because of a discount offer.
I have more interest in Spider-man and Dragon Quest in September so do right for the consumer or see your sales figures drop.

I've been getting more into rhythm games, but I'm still not very good at them. I bought Superbeat a while back and I do like it, but it's pretty difficult for me.

Went to the Flash sale page, saw a bunch of normal prices. Thought that maybe I wasn't logged in, so my Plus discount wasn't showing.

...

...

BUT I WAS LOGGED IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you were joking, but fyi, flash sales are for everyone including non plus subscribers so there is rarely if ever additional PS+ discounts on top of flash sale prices.

I wasn't overlooking that you mentioned people in the military. I was granting that you were right about that. The odds that studios consider that when making decisions are slim though.
And I get that Nintendo does things differently, but that isn't very relevant to the discussion. We aren't talking about Nintendo games. That one developer (whose games are available on 1 console) does things differently doesn't change that when I get a PS4 game I always have to download a patch for it to work optimally. Nintendo first party games make up what? 5% of all games? Probably less? I stand by the games don't work that way comment. Consumers don't care enough about this issue. It has already been decided.

Damn.  I was getting back into Destiny 2, grinding for the 400 armor....but just found out forsaken raises the cap to 600.  Makes it not worththe effort as drops will scale up more when it releases and probably can get higher quicker.

I can sometimes agree on patches, but again, this Spyro situation is about far more than just a rudimentary patch.

Your entire post was about Nintendo and not talking about Nintendo. The dude is right. Day 1 patches are fucking stupid, and people who justify it--like you're doing--are both stupid and annoying.

I'm not justifying it and it doesn't matter if it is stupid. The market has spoken (at least on the day 1 patches, we will see about Spyro) and the bottom line is that people don't care. If they did it would effect sales, and it does not. Complain about it all you want, it is a near unavoidable part of gaming now.

I don't even have the heart to buy the six games I'm interested from the double discount sale. It made it even easier to pass with the lack of a 20% off code. I can't justify spending around $66 right now. I'll make a mini splurge purchase however and pick up Windjammers. Looks like loads of fun and $1.49 with PS+ is a sweet deal.

I do not mind day 1 patches if they are bug fixes.
But a day 1 16gb download is pure BS.

A day 1 1-2 gb max download... fine.
I understand that the day a game goes “gold” and the actual release date can be a while. I sure hope the devs dont just say “well the game is gold, my work is done”

Granted, i do believe some rush to go gold, and then fix what they knew was bad later.

Your entire post was about Nintendo and not talking about Nintendo. The dude is right. Day 1 patches are fucking stupid, and people who justify it--like you're doing--are both stupid and annoying.
I have a far bigger problem with people who don't understand the difference between terms like defend, justify, explain, and general acceptance.

But I am on team stupid anyway, perhaps because I've actually developed a ton of software in my life. Back in the day, carts and lack of online forced Developers to commit to a specific version, and bugs and glitches were unfixable. Thankfully, games were also of an exponentially smaller scope and the market was incredibly different.

Now you have you have massively complex games and a far more mature Market. You have fan bases that lose their minds on every delay. You have marketing budgets budgets in the millions, committing yourself to a specific date.

So yes, day one patches are a fantastic thing. It means the developer kept working on perfecting their game after they are forced to go gold, hoping to ensure we get a proper product upon launch.

Longing for the days of no patch releases misses all the benefits online patches have given us, including the incredibly complex games we now take for granted. Sure, there are some negative side effects as some companies pressured by time and money are forced to release in a non ready state. That's a shame, but is also a fact of modern software. It would be worse without day one patches. Far far far worse.

I have no idea why they chose to release Spyro the way they are. It's unfortunate for sure. But day one patches? I'm happy being on team stupid.

Don't get me wrong, I would prefer a world in which Tech asking for another few months to perfect a product met with easy approval from executives, marketing, accounting, and fans. But that is not the world we live in, and expecting it to be even a possibility is what some may refer to as stupid.

Some quick reviews of some of the smaller games I've played and bought in recent sales.

Unholy Heights. This sounded really interesting, you manage a hotel for Monsters and then use those monsters staying at your place to defend against Heroes. You need to maintain and improve your properties to get better monsters. In practice, I found the game rather soulless and something felt off about the pace

Lock's Quest. You build defenses and then fend off enemies in a tower defense base defense hybrid. I wanted to love this but it feels really clunky or something. There are several bad design decisions that just break the game for me. For example, the time limit during base design. Absolutely unnecessary. If you want to play a far better version of this game get 'the castle game'

Infinifactory - finally, a great game. By the makers of chem lab, another fantastic game, this puzzle game has you using a bunch of parts like conveyor belt, turntables, pushers, and sensors to build a assembly line factory to create specific Creations based on the parts you're given. It's an absolutely fantastic puzzle game that scratches all the right itches if you like the program, organize, optimize, solve problems. Highly recommended. No, seriously, extremely highly recommended.

Yeah I am happy to see dead cells getting such strong scores. Wasn’t sure if it was going to be as good as the early previews and if I was just buying the hype. But it looks like it’s going to be a gem. Glad to have gotten it from the start with a bit of a discount too!
