Thankfully, I don't have any expectations of Kingdom Heart III at all, since I haven't played any of the other KH games to contrast it to.  I have them, mind you (and have had KH3 pre-ordered since 2015,) but I held off on playing them since I know they have Final Fantasy characters, and to get the most from their appearances, I want to wait until I've at least played the FF games that they appear in.  FF7 was the last Final Fantasy game I played and I've been having such a hard time bringing myself to play FF8.

 
The games don't really go into the FF characters' stories at all. In fact several of them are rewritten entirely to fit into the series' narrative.

I spent most of last year playing through the whole series to get ready for this game. It was my first time playing Birth by Sleep, which is actually vital to understanding the plot of KH3.
 
I love the Kingdom Hearts series. The plot is pure nonsense. Don't worry about playing other games to understand it because people who have played all the games don't understand it. It was convoluted and nonsensical in the very first game and has only upped the bar in each game after. Their is no game that is vital to understanding the plot of KH3 because these games are not made to be understood.

 
Most of it makes sense. It just takes a combination of 10 games to understand anything. Skip one, including the mobile games, and you're screwed. But even then, there's a lot of holes and BS. Although -a lot- of the missing link is in 358/2.

I remember the first time i played Kingdom Hearts 2 on PS2 and my head exploded from the opening part of the game.

I skipped playing the Gameboy Advance game Chain of Memories so that opening part was nuts.

The longer the video the more they explain, the more they explain the crazier it gets.

 
Kingdom Hearts 3 is going to have videos that recaps the past games. I played most of the games (Chain of Memories card battle system killed that game for me, but I did watch all the cutscenes) when I got that All In One bundle. I'm still going to watch the recap video when I start Kingdom Hearts 3.

 
Chains was probably one of the more convoluted ones. The most important, and makes most sense would be KH1 + KH2 + 358/2, followed by BBS + DDD. Then just ignore Chains, Coded, X, and Unchained X, which shouldn't have been made canon to begin with.

Excited to get into the "Trails" series with the PS4 ports of 1 and 2 coming in the next 2 months. And Day's Gone looks great, can't wait to play it, getting that God of War release date must mean Sony has confidence in the title.

Agreed, but the general sentiment from a lot of commentators who have seen it up close is negative or at least not very positive and i've noticed that this generally tends to work out as the same end result in most cases. I know there are exceptions like Doom, but generally, pre-release impressions from industry veterans tend to be fairly accurate at predicting the finished product.

 
I'm playing through re: CoM right now and I don't know if I can finish it. The card battle system just kills any enjoyment to me. I'll probably try and slog it out, but ugh I'm ready to jump into KH 2 FM already.

Be warned, I just quit on KH2 FM after about 20 hours because on the default difficulty the game is way too easy and it gets very boring. I'm not saying I'm some KH master, I generally don't like hard games, I'm saying you literally can't lose by just mashing attack and spamming the link moves so watch out if you don't want to quit 2 KH games in a row.

I quit that game on PS2 because I thought it was such a dumb mechanic. I understand them implementing that on DS, but on PS2 that mechanic didn't need to stay.

The FF characters are just there to have more characters. They are totally seperate incarnations than those that appear in the FF games, like the events of the various FF games are not at all connected to KH. You literally just need to know the character's name and you're all set.

I don't think you've paid much attention to them if that's what you've come away with. I've played them all and understand the plot. Every game is vital except Coded and Union X. You can watch a video for Chain of Memories though to avoid the card crap.

as far as we know the digital all in one is just for that pre-order bundle. There is the physical "The Story so Far" bundle though.

I'm with you on that since I beat both KH games on ps2 back in the day and I don't remember a damn thing.Yet I vividly remember FF7/Xenogears/Chrono trigger stories and characters and I played them before KH games.So yeah the KH games make no damn sense and you'd have to watch a YouTube video and have someone break the story down bit by bit to understand it.

You only played 1 and 2 which would explain the confusion.

Yes, the entire plot is a huge mess, and playing the games years apart from eachother especially with some not being released in chronologucal story order doesn't help. I didn't get most of the story because i had only played two of the games. However after playing the remastered collections in the order they're presented everything clicks better.

The story is unnecessarily complicated, but I didn't have much trouble getting it when I played through the collections.

Also, at this point everyone is either Xehanort, Sora, or in Sora.

I'd like to appreciate that despite all the different platforms the games have been on over the years, we actually have collections to play every major game in the series in one place, at a reasonable price. It's very helpful and good for getting new fans or re-igniting interest in old fans.

I read on another forum that the Ace Combat 5 port that comes with Ace Combat 7 will only be available until sometime in February, and then it won't be available at all, bundled or separately.

 
Kingdom Hearts 1 is great.

Chain of Memories sucks but it's worth playing through.

Kingdom Hearts 2 kind of has this feeling that it's the game they wanted to make in the first place. There's a lot of repeating areas and characters and scenes from the first game with some expansion.

While I'd likely put KH1 in a top favorites games list of mine, I actually enjoyed the *playing* of KH2 much more. I felt like the combat sections were fun not a chore. A few years ago, I booted up a KH2 save to replay the Sephiroth fight. Hmm, maybe I'll do that again soon. Though I should probably play BbS at some point.

 
I think KH2 is more polished and better at what it's trying to do, but I still prefer the original game because it does and has things that the other games don't, or not as well.
