Also, I do believe that song you are referring to is no longer in the game. I know it's not in the iOS versions, and I think someone said the PSN version is the same way.
Can we get confirmation on whether this song is in the game. And um... which song exactly we're talking about?

Re: VC vs. SA
SA is a better game imo, with a significantly larger world, light rpg features, and significantly more to do. You can seriously just sandbox this game for ages.
That said, Vice City is an absolute freakin' masterpiece. The setting, music, and story are impeccable.

You really can't go wrong with either. If either game was remade in HD with trophies, I'd pay $60 in a heartbeat. GTA5 can't come soon enough.
Pssst. We are still using polygons... just many, many more.

While some of the previous answers tried to answer you, I'm actually not sure in this specific circumstance. Like, the previous posters are absolutely correct as to why you use formulas rather than store fixed hit rates... but I think you were actually asking why the hit rates are stored as formulas that only contained numbers. And you're right, the formulas listed are... odd.

For example:
0.85 - 0.10 = 75% chance to hit
at that point, you could just have stored hitrate = .75 and used that, since as it is the .85 and .1 are meaningless.

My guess? They're oversimplifying to get the info across to the fanbase. Perhaps the .85 is fixed, but the .10 is an actual variable based on [terrain/character skill/something] with an end result that's 'about' .75. (ie, hitrate = .85 - dexteritypenalty)

And they changed the formula to increase the overall result about 12.5%... but just simplified how they're telling us so as not to lose people in the formulaic math.
They are variables based on the hit rate of the current party member and enemy's evade rate, which was explained in the original Facebook post by the developers.

We've also taken this opportunity to reduce the miss rate across the board - currently the miss rate is calculated based on your hit percentage minus the enemies evade percentage. We're now adding 1 and dividing everything by two, so if you have a 85% chance to hit and the enemy has a 10% chance to evade, it would be like this:

Yikes! Glad I bought this on Steam before they relisted them with those tracks removed, though I think the PC version also allows a custom soundtrack so it wouldn't matter as much if you happened to have the MP3s of the removed songs. They should mention this on the digital distribution sites selling this though like PSN, IOS, etc. People are expecting that they are buying the same game with the original soundtrack. Ah well, this isn't the first time music licenses have caused games and tv shows to remove the song or halted them from being re-released period.
I remember hearing that, for technical reasons, the PS2 port was delayed because they couldn't remove the songs and had to reacquire the licenses. Any truth to that?
One of the Michael Jackson songs was what played at the beginning of the game when you first get control, right? That definitely wasn't there when I played the first few missions for the video I recorded.

This makes me sad. Well, if anyone needs an old school kick, Walmart and Amazon still sell the PS2 Trilogy for $19.99.

It's weird that sony animation studios is not making the movie themselves, that would seem like a perfect fit. Anyways, I'm looking forward to the R&D game sale, want to get quest for booty and size matters.
As true as this is, this wasn't the question that he was referring to.

The reasoning behind this is as follows. If the values such as attack power are already there, deriving a new value through formulas saves memory space, especially if it means a new field for every data structure. The downside is that computation is required every time that field is used (there are code/compiler optimizations to circumvent this though, which I won't elaborate due to space limitations). More importantly, as your character levels up, values such as hit rate must be scaled. Instead of storing a table that matches level to hit rate, attack, defense etc. the program can just give the formula and the code can compute these values dynamically. This second point is obviously not orthogonal to the first point, but serves the same purpose: more efficient code execution.
My post addressed your doubt exactly. It's a classic coding trade off between storing data and computing it on the fly in coding.

Yep, which is why you cannot store the static table. Well, you could, it will be a multi-dimensional key look up table, but wildly inefficient.

Dragon's Crown's release date has been announced:
Dragon's Crown, the 2-D action multiplayer beat 'em up from Vanillaware and ATLUS will officially arrive in North America on Aug. 6, 2013 as exclusives for the PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®Vita systems. The game's official website is also now live. New screenshots from the game are available to download here.

Dragon's Crown will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita systems for $49.99 and $39.99 respectively and is available for pre-orders now from major retailers. The game is expected to receive a T rating from the ESRB, but is not yet rated. More details about the game will be revealed in the future, with updates on the official Dragon's Crown website at: http://www.atlus.com/dragonscrown/

I wonder if Capcom's recent announcement for the release of the Dungeons & Dragons arcade games helped speed things along. Vanillaware seemed content to keep mum about the game indefinitely.

Ouch, Dragon's Crown is coming out on the same day as Tales of Xillia. Still really wish it was cross-play. I don't know which version to get, especially since you can't play online with people that have the other version.
My post addressed your doubt exactly. It's a classic coding trade off between storing data and computing it on the fly in coding.
no, i understand this. the issue isn't with storing date/computing on the fly -- it's about the very specific example given that had no variables. i think the poster was asking why the example read '.85 - .1' and not just .75. See what I mean?

He was asking why you'd use a formula instead of just storing .75, since the examples shown were stripped of variables (.85 - x).

There is absolutely no reason to store a value as '.85 - .1'. There are, however, many reasons to store a value as '.85 - x'. The post showed the '.85 - .1' as a simplified example, but i think it caused the initial question because someone didn't understand why that would be a formula (and they're right, it wouldn't be).

you are correct that there are many reasons to use formulas instead of fixed variables/lookup tables, but i'm saying i don't think that's actually what was being asked. i think it was confusion over the variable-less example given.

Very excited about Dragon's Crown. Finally a (almost) full-blown beatem-up title. Hope the length lives up to its retail price tag.

Finally!
This game looks great, couch coop with friends will be epic, glad I managed to keep my PS3 $30 pre-order at Amazon.

I was looking at the Resident Evil sale, and it looks like this would be a good opportunity to get into the series. I've never played any of them (I know, I know...) Anyway, I was thinking about getting the second one, but should I really start with the 1st one or does it really even matter?

It really doesn't matter. The Resident Evil story is a huge cluster f and will not be any clearer if you play the games in order. Just play which ones you think you would like (I personally recommend RE 2 and RE 4).

In terms of story and pacing, RE2 has aged better. Less terrible dialogue, a more interesting setting, etc. Its still cheesy at times, but RE1 was intentionally campy, at times to a fault. RE3 is also worth your time but that game is better played after becoming familiar with the series IMO, especially since the story occurs concurrently with RE2. You even revisit some of more iconic settings for a brief moment, which is way cooler after playing RE2. RE4 is the easiest to recommend but I still have a lot of love for the PS1 games.

Thanks for posting. Interesting that RPGs are number 1, I really don't like them that much, I'm surprised that so many people do. I wish fighters were lower and platformers and puzzles were higher. Oh, it's also nice to see Multiplayer rank so low.

It's $15+tax at Gamefly right now. I'd definitely recommend going that route, that way you can get something out of it if (when?) you decide you don't like it.

2 and 4 are the best from the series but remember that they have tank controls.

^I think a few people are still holding out hope that they will. On the PS Blog they mentioned that it wasn't the full list of RE content on sale. More than likely the additional content will just be add-ons for RE5, RE6, and RE:ORC but it's possible that they put the bundle on sale as well.

Awesome, if it's $10 or less that seems like an awesome deal. I know FFA didn't get rave reviews, but I love tower defense games, and Ratchet and Clank is a franchise I can never get enough of. Deadlocked is probably my second or third least favorite ratchet game, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't replay it for trophies. I expect there will also be new multiplayer servers, which I never got to try on the original release:)

Looks like the update is rolling in.

There are a bunch of RE games discounted under "Grand Theft Auto Sale" in the SEN store on the web.

Said screw it and bought Dragon Fantasy. Figured id support the developer. To those of you who bought it do you play in enhanced mode or not? I almost think i may like turning it off for a more 16 bit feel, but it looks better with it on on the vita. What do you guys play on?

wait what? I thought Dragons Crown WAS cross play.. did they take that out? That really sucks if thats the case, i looked forward to actually using that feature for once, since the gameplay lends itself well to vita or ps3

Played through it exclusively in enhanced mode.

The only cross-platform features Dragon's Crown has so far is Cross Save. Cross Play was ruled out a while ago, though it might've been part of the lies that Ignition spread when they were initially publishing it.
wait what? I thought Dragons Crown WAS cross play.. did they take that out? That really sucks if thats the case, i looked forward to actually using that feature for once, since the gameplay lends itself well to vita or ps3
No, it's only cross-save, meaning if you have both versions, you can transfer your save data from one system to another. That's the only cross-platform feature. PS3 owners can only play with PS3 owners, & same for Vita.

The website is up but in the US, PSN hasn't.

That would explain why my code for Black Rock Shooter(PSP) won't register correctly.

Was going to buy Vice City today but I haven't played my PS3 in a couple weeks so I had to update it. By the time it was finished and I could sign back in it wasn't on sale anymore.

Oh well.

for future reference, you can buy things off the sonyentertainmentnetwork.com store, and download them from your history on your playstation device:)

Yup, web store means there's no excuse.
The new star trek is only 54.99 on the ps store where as at gamestop it is 59.99
this has been the trend lately to try and encourage digital full game downloads. Personally I still choose retail when possible, because my HDD is stuffed full of PS+ goodies:whistle2:&

Sadly i can't find anything but a preview of the game where it seems all they got was a 20 min demo. I was hoping to find a review of star trek to see if it is any good
