well my problem with the shooting is because of the lack of a real cover system (shooting around corners is virtually impossible). The stealth is fine, braindead AI not considered, but I just hate how they completely ignore any of your NPC companions (for example Elli was standing in a hallway completely nonchalant and an enemy walked directly into her without any sort of recognition). It really breaks the immersion for me, and knowing that this isn't just a glitch but intentional by Naughty Dog doesn't really help. I guess I will have to see if my opinion changes greatly once I've beat it, but so far I'm just a tad disappointed.
Really? That was an intentional decision?! Wow, I just don't see the logic in that as it was one of the most grating immersion breaking things and keeps happening over and over.

I get the immersion breaking when Ellie is right in front of people, but if they let you be spotted with her, people would blast the A.I. all sorts. Bioshock: Infinite and The Last of Us had to find ways to not let your partner ruin combat for you. I think Bioshock did it more elegantly, but still. I'd much rather have my immersion broken for a bit than have myself raging at Ellie for getting her and Joel spotted and killed over and over.

As for not liking the gameplay, I felt the same for a bit. That is, until I sat down with the multiplayer. I've sank about 22+ hours into the multiplayer and I'm still addicted. When you start to really balance out what the game gives you, you'll see that it's overall a really well-built game.

Wow. Only game I've done that to this generation was Bayonetta.
I think everyone probably has one game they've done this with at sometime. Like I said, I took the week off. Normally I can play games during my work day, but it causes me to miss out on some story stuff when I have to actually work. I wanted complete focus for this one, and in my opinion it was worth it.

Yeah, but when you have Ellie and another character running around screaming and running into oblivious infected it's like really... Fortunately they don't give you away or that would just be controller throwing, I know because one time they did just randomly start attacking a clicker they bumped into and drew the whole area down onto me after I had slowly crept through half of it. That was a moment where I put it away for the rest of the night.

The multiplayer is so good, that's the only downside to having received a damaged copy and getting to play the game for free before returning it. I'm still impressed how well they took the single player mechanics and adapted them to a multiplayer game mode.

I'm beyond horrible about beating games but that's the one game I sat down and beat twice in a row. Helped that I was needing to do so to win a sweet shirt from Penny Arcade but still would have wanted to do it anyway. That just gave me some motivation to not start something else.

I haven't tried the multiplayer, but I'll give it a go when I'm gone with the story. I see what you are saying, and that was from what I understand Naughty Dog's intention, but honestly I feel like it is the wrong way to do it. If it was just a rare occurrence I could let it go easier, but almost every time you are trying to hide from enemies your companions feel the need to keep moving back and forth or just standing out in the open. It feels like lazy AI programming, and I expected more from such a top tier developer.

See, this makes me want to go back and play UC3 now that it's on Plus because as a newer PS3 owner I missed actually playing the series but hearing all the hype around it. Really curious to go back and play those and see how they handled some of the things that weren't quite as sharp as they could have been in TLoU since even without playing the series you can see it's the same basic foundation.

All this talk about Bayonetta makes me think I need to put it in the front of the backlog.
I know the PS3 version had some graphical issues, frame rate and load times mostly I believe, since it came out at the tail end of when devs were still trying to figure out the PS3 so the 360 was getting the noticeably better multi-platform versions on a lot of games. Not sure if that ever got properly addressed.

Regardless though Bayonetta is still one of my favorite games this generation and to me one of the best examples of the sub-genre. The combat's super polished and fun but the game just has this great vibe and never takes itself all that seriously where DMC is all grumbly and serious. Bayonetta 2 is the game that's going to force me to buy a WiiU eventually.

do yourself a favor and play them in order. Jumping into UC3 cold turkey is really not the best way to experience it, as more than the other two it really focuses on the characters you've come to know, and I think most of the jokes and revelations would be lost on someone that hadn't experienced the series from the beginning. Not to mention Uncharted 1 and 2 are amazing, with 2 being one of my favorite games of all time (to chime in on the replaying talk above, I beat UC2 3-4 times and still have fun every time I go back). At only $10 or so a piece now you really owe it to yourself to check them out ^_^

Good to know, that's the main reason I didn't at least peek at UC3 after I finished TLoU.  Suppose it can sit on my backlog a while longer and maybe the dual pack with the first two will show up for $10 somewhere during the holiday madness.

I tried the first Uncharted, and couldn't get more than halfway through. Tried the second, and same result. Reluctantly I tried the third and absolutely loved it. Also loved Golden Abyss. I know that's a little weird, so I went back to try the first two again and still couldn't get more than halfway through on each.

How does Golden Abyss fit into the big picture? Would I be OK checking that out or is it one of those that falls in the middle so while it's a side story still relies on the other games?

It taks place before the first game. So essentially a prequel. Easiest game of the four, even on its hardest difficulty.

You should give UC2 another go. Plot is loads better than UC3's. In fact, a good portion of UC3 didn't make any sense. I can't recall which of the games had better set pieces, though. Might be a tossup.

I couldn't possibly recommend Bayonetta anymore. Hands down my favorite game from this generation. Don't play it for the story though, play it for the silky smooth action and combat and wonderful visuals. Oh and I loved the music, and that is very rarely a standout feature for me. Like Eldritch said, the game never takes itself seriously at all, which I think is a good thing. But it does lead to a nonsensical story.

Eldritch is right that on release the 360 version was significantly better. They did patch the PS3 version to allow a full install of a game which greatly improved the load times, which was the biggest issue. (Pre-patch, the PS3 version had to load in order to display the pause screen. It loaded all the time. It was awful)

Ok after I finish up a couple games I have going I'll play Bayonetta next. I don't know why it was neglected but it keeps getting passed up by other games. Sometimes it takes some talk on CAG to remind of games I really need to play.

Thanks Tyler and Eldritch

I've only played UC2 so far but I also highly recommend this game. Amazing set pieces and a great sense of adventure throughout. Only real knock I have against it would be the somewhat forgettable main villain and the laughably easy final boss battle. Really looking forward to playing UC3 when I get around to it.

Not to go off on my own little rant but I'm still rather irritated that Pixel Junk Monsters for Vita is going to be $15.  I know they've put more into it than just porting it to Vita but charging that much for it puts me off something I would have bought day one if it had been cheaper.

Wait that was a real spoiler for Last of Us?  I just figured it was BS.  If so then that dude is a total fucking asshole.

I don't know why we're talkin about the game in here anyways, it opens it up for shit like that.

It sounds kinda dumb though so I don't think it is for real. Granted, I don't want anyone to correct me if I'm wrong either.

which of the .99 games are worth a grab? I heard critter crunch is decent but am not familiar with any of the other ones. Any recomendations?

As for the other ones How long is Gugir and Growlanser on sale? I have all the other psp rpgs listed last time they were on sale. I cant decide if i should get these for 7.50 or wait to see if they go cheaper like some of the others did this time

Critter Crunch and Every Shooter seem to be the best and the ones I bough. The Atlus stuff is really a mystery and I don't think there's been any indication about it.

Just finished the demo of Blast Factor and it seems no fun at all. It is pretty though.

I also finally got around to starting up Everyday Shooter. That one is fun and pretty and sounds damn good. Wholeheartedly worth a buck.

I think that if you haven't watched a movie in almost 15 years that you're no long allowed to complain about spoilers. Also the Dread Pirate Roberts is Westley.

Inconceivable!!!

During the final Bioshock Infinite battle it tells me, "at times Elizabeth will provide you with ammo or salts, press square to accept them". The last battle!
Has she offered these things to you before? Have you accepted them? Maybe she's been sending you signals this whole time and the game's trying to get you to notice them? Maybe she's trying to get away from you by getting you arrested on a felony weapons charge if you don't keel over from hypertension and heart disease?

That's your own damn fault for not playing the entire thing in one sitting. What are you, an animal?

Saw it ten years ago, thing is there's a lot of people here who are a lot younger who may not have. Not everyone is in our age group.

Anyone know of good psn games for someone at a beginner-ish level of Japanese? At this point I've got the kana down, for the most part, and am working on a bit of vocab.
Of all the games I've purchased on PSN, the easiest is definitely Rung Rung: Oz no Mahoutsukai ~Another World~. You can find some info on it here: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/03/12/gungho-bringing-six-more-psone-imports-to-north-america/ , or go here to see an actual gameplay video (might need to log in): http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm14435097.

But for any game on PSN, kana mastery alone won't be quite enough. You'll need to know a lot of grammar, too. And, of course, the more vocabulary you memorize, the less time you spend looking words up in a dictionary while you play. ;)

At this point, what I'd recommend (if you've just finished learning the kana) is to play a kana-only game, like Pokemon. Even if you don't understand a single word, playing it will give you an endless stream of kana to practice reading. That's what I did, and it helped speed up my kana reading significantly.

After that, furigana-based games are very useful (Ni no Kuni is what I'd recommend most, if you can get your hands on a Japanese or Asian copy). Unfortunately, there aren't any furigana games on the U.S. PSN store, unless I'm mistaken.

Finally got the 5k trophy in Jetpack Joyride on Vita, so all I left to do in that game is buy everything else in the shop.
Puke. That game's trophies are a grindfest. Good luck with that... I couldn't force myself to do it.

Saw it ten years ago, thing is there's a lot of people here who are a lot younger who may not have. Not everyone is in our age group.
This. I'm a little late to the conversation so I have no idea what movie you guys have been talking about, nor do I care to. I pretty much despise spoilers of all kinds. Not everyone (like me) has the money or the time to keep up with everything. Because I'm so far behind with everything, its rare for me to get to experience anything as a new release. In fact, a friend of mine bought me The Last of Us this week as a birthday gift and that's the closest I've gotten to a new release of anything in a long time.

My point is everyone's situation is different and some considerations should be made.

To revisit an old topic where I preferred story over challenge on games today versus old, oh my goodness will Bioshock Infinite let go of my hand already? I realize they have the 1999 mode but that doesn't make up for the fact that I'm nearing the end and they still tell me which button to push to find the right direction or to use my vigors in battle. Ridiculous amount of hand holding for a game that has a weak story.
in Bioshocks defense (well, in a backhanded sort of way) the series has never be known for difficultly. As much as I loved the original for atmosphere, it's the go to example of a game a monkey could beat. Since enemy damage is kept even if you die, and you can die infinitely going back to the nearest vitachamber, the 'challenge' of enemies is a complete illusion.

however, i haven't played B:Infinite yet. But i do know what you mean... Ni No Kuni was an amazing game that i absolutely loved, but i still feel it's death grip on my hand for non-combat elements. That game never, ever stops explaining its non-combat mechanics to you.

which of the .99 games are worth a grab? I heard critter crunch is decent but am not familiar with any of the other ones. Any recomendations?

As for the other ones How long is Gugir and Growlanser on sale? I have all the other psp rpgs listed last time they were on sale. I cant decide if i should get these for 7.50 or wait to see if they go cheaper like some of the others did this time
I still need to check out the demo for Blast Factor, but I'll probably end up buying it cuz it has trophies.

I'll probably get Everyday Shooter as well even without trophies because it looks pretty trippy and interesting.

I'm gonna pass on Calling all Cars because there's no trophies, no more online servers, and I don't see myself ever booting that up when I have a gaming night with friends.

Finally got the 5k trophy in Jetpack Joyride on Vita, so all I left to do in that game is buy everything else in the shop.
Nice job. Like someone already said, that last trophy is a huge grind if you don't want to spend real cash. I didn't bother getting it.

Well considering you can turn off vita chambers (and with it the persistent enemy damage), I always thought it was a great compromise for those that wanted something difficult and those that wanted to just experience the world and story. I don't know if there is the option in Infinite though, though I personally never found it as easy as everyone else. I don't know, maybe I just suck at shooters

I'm not writing it off, there are just so many things (the horrible shooting, AI, stealth mechanics, and glitches) that make it hard for me to understand the perfect scores. I do think it is a really really good game, but I find overlooking all of the problems is somewhat overkill. I can get the need not to nitpick a game to death, but I guess others just have different opinions on what is and isn't worth criticizing. So yeah, I don't want to argue TLoU's merits or anything, just needed to say something about my lack of understanding.
horrible shooting is actually intentional, imo, and i love it. if you could easily kill things running at you the survival horror aspect would be gone. by the end of the game when you've upgraded 'gun sway', and have better/upgrade weapons... you'll be fine. i think it was a fine gameplay decision.

if your companions could be seen by the AI we'd all hate our companions with a passion. making them 'invisible' (usually, except where they help out) was really the only choice ND had. yes, i can see why it would break immersion... i just don't see any other options because nobody (and i mean nobody) would want the companions to mess up a perfectly good stealth run. that would be beyond infuriating.

now, that said... they should have reduced companion chatter during key stealth sequences.

i actually enjoyed the stealth mechanics.

AI wise... it was alright. I can see the complaints, but again we have an issue where if a game actually had incredible AI, it would simply be too difficult for the majority of people. 5 enemies coming at you should be able to kill you, period. So, sadly, stuff like having an enemy stop looking for you after 1 minute is almost required.

PS -- best multiplayer this gen, imo. well, except maybe BF, but that's different.
