Saiyuki and Front Mission 3 are two of my all-time favorite games. Brilliant games!

Damn too bad i missed the Final Fantasy sale. Its too bad, i wanted IX and maybe VII. When was WIld Arms free? I dont remember that at all. I guess i can wait, im just concerned some may get delisted at some point. I'm always leery especially about big licenced games. I know relatively recently people who bought Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles got screwed when it got delisted

What about the more niche games like i said? Vanguard Bandits, Saiyuki, Front mission, Rhapsody, stuff like that? Do they ever go on sale?

Man you guys are fucking old! :)
I remember the very first issue of GamePro... I think I still have it somewhere. :oldman:

Quick question... can anyone recall how often the Marvel Pinball tables have been on sale? Or if they've ever been on sale at all? Been messing around with it and wouldn't mind picking up the other DLCs.

Perhaps reviews should just be whittled down a star rating and nothing else? A review score is worthless without an explanation of where the score came from. A review is an opinion - It's only of value if you can read and find out WHY they came up with that score. Then you can decide whether the factors they considered matter to you. Having said that, I don't trust any video game reviews. I think they are all in cahoots with somebody. ;)

When I started writing reviews for GameGravy.com a year and a half ago, all the games I did were paid for with my own money. So there was no bias there at all for me.

I agree that reviews should be read to get the full understanding of what the author means. For me, I would write it, then create my bullets and score based on my text. Like previous posters have said, I tried to explain some of the details of playing, avoid spoilers, and mention what I liked and didn't like, much like I would explain it to a friend that was interested in the game. Looking back I seemed to give mostly higher scores (except Heroes of Ruin, which I ripped apart).

I haven't written one for awhile, but I'm hoping back on the train with a DuckTales one this week.

Bah, guess I'll jump on the reviewing reviews train also.

I think of it in two ways:

1. Find someone who usually has the same taste as me. I would put that reviewer's opinion higher than anyone else as there is a history of similar games we both would like.

2. Don't focus all one one review, read many reviews. See if there are similarities in opinion on where the game has pros and cons. One review isn't enough, but a clearer picture of the game can be built with 4-5 reviews from different sites.

Geez you guys are really critical of your reviews/reviewers haha. I could care less about the f'in score. Usually after reading reviews for a game it just comes down to if it's playable/enjoyable for me or not. It doesn't make a damn bit of difference to me if it's a 10/10 game or a 7/10 game.

I've believe we've beaten this debate to death now. I think the new motto for this thread should be beating things to death. :p

I play whatever demos/trials are out like you mentioned and always find it curious when others don't when the option is available. But demos can be deceptive too or not a good representation of the overall product and that's why I like (spoiler free) reviews. Then I decide what's right for me.

The only time I've ever regretted playing a demo was for the original Bioshock. It was technically a new IP (I never played System Shock) and though I loved the previews I wanted to try it for myself before committing to buying the LE. I loved the demo, but wish I could have savored the wonderful intro to the game as a whole. When I played the retail copy I was sad I couldn't re-experience it for the first time. Maybe that's just a compliment to how much I loved it :)

Previously I would consume every game (and movie) trailer and many previews before playing (or watching) the final product. For the last year or so I've been trying to go into movies and games with the least amount of info needed to determine my interest. I've been enjoying that immensely. The sense of wonder and surprise when going into games like Mass Effect 3, Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us relatively blind has been extremely rewarding.
Nicely put! And you mentioned like four of my all time favorite games for this gen. High five!

Eh, grabbed Ducktales this morning.  I haven't regretted buying Stealth Inc or Cloudberry Kingdom yet, hopefully Ducktales keeps that streak alive. Plus $6 back at the end of the month will be nice.

The funny thing for me about Plus is I don't even need more games (although I'll gladly take them), I need more time to play them :)

to those posting favorably about DOA5+

I like the DOA series but i typically avoid fighting games on the vita.  Usually I reserve those for PS3 and use a stick with them.  Are there any convincing or exclusive reasons why I should pick up the vita version if I already own the PS3 vanilla disc?  Thanks

I personally love fighters on the vita. And DOA is my favorite fighting game next to tekken.

Still trying to decide on Ducktales. I never played the NES version, but have some minor nostalgia for the TV show. The reviews seem to indicate that its really only for those who enjoyed the original. I picked up Stealth Inc, so I'd technically get $2 back for buying it, but I just don't know.

Just for the record, that's not how that works. If a game is delisted after you purchase it, you can still download it whenever you need. Delisting only screws the people who never got around to buying it in time, not those who already paid for the game.

(Well, except for the people who play multiplayer modes and can no longer find new players, like when Catan or Punisher: No Mercy were taken down.)

Man you guys are fucking old! :) I loved EGM. Ah the days before the internet. The excitement of getting a new mag in the mail with all those pretty pictures! It is nice to have all the info at your fingertips now, but we miss something...
I used to play PBM games (you mail in a turn sheet and get a either a hand written or computer generated result every week). And I'm in my 30s. I -loved- getting mail when i was a kid. CGW and EGM were both great, though CGW had Scorpia.

And now I watch the console wars going on in various forums, and i realize... this gen has lasted so long, that there are now legal adults who only ever owned one of the current consoles during their formative years... no wonder they're so emotionally attached. If I got saltly about console wars I'd still be bemoaning the death of Intellivision. Who needs a DS4 when you've got a disc, a billion buttons, and a curly cord?

I've believe we've beaten this debate to death now. I think the new motto for this thread should be beating things to death. :p
i read this thread for the plot.

It has first-person touch-screen combat. ;)

As with many things vita, if you have constant, unrestricted access to your ps3 all day every day there's very little reason to purchase a port of a ps3 title. If any of the following describes you, it might be a good fit for you:
- can't play your ps3 whenever you want i.e. family shared tv
- you like playing games / practicing fighting games while having mindless tv on
- you have a long, non-driving commute (bus, rail, etc)
- you play in bed to help go to sleep
- you like supporting products you enjoy to hopefully encourage future development
- you just enjoy playing games on the vita because it's a damn nice piece of hardware
- edit: almost forgot - you have a newborn that you get up with (seems to be a popular reason 'round these parts)

Huh, I didn't know that DuckTales was getting a box release for PS3. Is that something they'll actually stock at Target/Walmart, or is it more of Gamestop/specialty store item? Or is it only on the Capcom online store?

For those of you who have sound shapes I'm thinking of grabbing it but have no creativity when it comes to the making music part. Is it a big part of the game? Can I still enjoy the game or even play it properly if I don't want to do any of that?

Thanks

Yes. There are thousands of user-made levels for you to download. If you're not interested in playing OTHER peoples' levels then you might not like it.

It's just a download code and a pin, I think, and it costs more money.

Gettinmoney is right, it does have a retail box but inside the box is just a download code for the game and a little Ducktales pin. The retail price is $20. I don't imagine there will be a ton on the shelves everywhere, but who knows. If you definitely want it, I'd just grab it at Gamestop or Amazon.

It's sort of like Marvel vs Capcom 2's re-release. It's just the box and inside is a code and I think a special pin/badge/trinket for buying the "physical copy". There is no disc from what I understand. Of course I've been wrong plenty of times before. :p

You're right. You just get a special edition Disney pin and a download code in the retail copy.

It's a slap in the face!
Don't you start with that, we haven't had any of that talk in like a day and a half!

It has first-person touch-screen combat. ;)
Oh boy, that just seems like asking for trouble in a series known mostly for it's jiggle physics.

I actually just started playing some of the community stuff a few days ago and it is incredible. If you enjoy the game there will be plenty of levels to play without ever touching the editor (other than the tutorial bit they make you do).

FYI Street Fighter X Tekken is NOT on sale this week and was supposed to be on sale next week.  Sumioni: Demon Arts is on sale this week for $10.49 ($7.34 for Plus).

Was just about to add Ducktales to my cart, but it is up to full price and ready to download. Not that bummed since I was waffling all day and this made my decision easy.

I think all of the new releases are up, actually. Are they really trying to sell Payday 2 for $40?? I felt kind of ripped off after getting the first one for free during the Play promotion a few years ago.

Payday 2 is supposed to be a lot more of a bigger budget title this time around where the first one was more of an indie title which is why it's got the higher price tag.

Store update in progress.  Items being added to the sale page but prices haven't changed for Plus yet.  Runner 2 is free now though.

As far as unannounced sales I'm seeing 1000 Tiny Claws, Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess, and Who's That Flying on the sale listings.  1000 Tiny Claws is showing at $1.75 and the other two at $2.49.

Edit- Plus prices are up on almost everything.

Payday 2 looks awesome, but I'll wait on it.  The trophies also seem much easier than the first's so it's not like I'll need an elite squad this time.

Anyone have any sugestions for the vita titles for this week and aug 20th? i just bought Ninja gaiden sigma plus 2, and soul sacrifice...but don't want to youtube tons of reviews before i read from other cag's if the titles are good or not.

I'm getting Katamari and Soul Sacrifice myself; maybe going to cave on Atelier Totori Plus as well. Gravity Rush is great, but free for Plus, and Ridge Racer is mostly paid DLC. Otherwise most of the stuff is kind of in the middle and going to depend on your preferences.

Atelier Totori Plus: The Adventurer of Arland not yet :(
I'm buying you some reading comprehension books for the holidays my friend.

Edit- I should have been paying more attention a few minutes ago, Guilty Gear was set to $3.75 for a bit.
