:ps4: Foul Play - $2.00 to $100.00 [customspoiler='Fine Print'] :ps4: Foul Play is a part of the PlayStation Heroes program, which means that you can pay your choice among a variety of price points for an item that is usually a theme for entries into a contest to win some prize with most of the money going to a charity. There are no details at the moment for what the prize for buying Foul Play offers, so I'll post that whenever it's announced.

Edit: From the PlayStation Heroes app on PS4, the Foul Play promotion is for a trip to PlayStation Experience in December. Once you purchase the game, you're supposed to go here to register for the actual contest, though you should wait until the page is updated for the PlayStation Experience promotion instead of whatever it's on at the moment.[/customspoiler]

So, I'm new to PS4 and I'm not too familiar with the sales trends for games on PSN. Are these prices good or should I wait? Which games should I bite on, if any?

Rayman legends $16
Tomb Raider $12
Shadow of mordor $23.99
Infamous second son $19.99
Driveclub $24
Tomb raider is a good price if you haven't played it. Drive club is good but if you're on the fence I'm sure new retail copies will go lower by fall. Infamous is good but I wouldn't get it digital at that price. Not sure about rayman and shadow could probably be found cheaper if that's the base game at that price.

Driveclub was already $19.99 at Gamestop at least once. I think those other games have been cheap in gamefly used game sales

That's kind of the feeling I had. Prices aren't great. I played Tomb Raider on PS3 and loved it. I want it on my PS4 but not at that price. I think I'll be patient and hope for a good flash sale somewhere down the line. I got a few games to catch up on in the meantime.

Yea. So far I've only bit on driveclub ($24.99) and destiny ($44.99). So still need a couple more to hit that $100 mark.

Driveclub is a permanent price drop, so you don't need to rush to get that game.

So no flash sale over the weekend... but Steam is wrapping up, E3 is behind us... maybe we'll get a good sale this week or weekend!  I did well only spending the cash in my Steam account (about $5) and the cash earned from selling the free cards they gave out (about $2 or so worth).  So since I did so well I'm primed for a really good sale.

PS3 related (and on a personal note)...

I started the upgrade on my PS3 last night after deleting some bigger games that I have no intent to play anytime soon.  I'm finally going to have some space on my PS3 (well not enough, there never will be enough, but 1TB is a jump from the 250G I started with).  I got the system backed up (a little over 200G of data).  It took over 6 hours and ended around 2am.  So this morning I popped out the old harddrive and inserted the new and was greeted with a system os issue.  Had to research that real quick.  No problem getting the os update downloaded from sony and putting it on a jumpdrive inside of \PS3\UPDATE\.  Got the os update install done and basic system setup... now I'm blasting that away and restoring from my backup.  Another 6 hours and I should have my PS3 back to normal with more space and ready for some gaming.  Unlike the last several months or so where I've not gamed much at all, I'm going to get back to digging through my massive collection.

Shenmue 3 is now over 3.5Million.  I'm shocked people are upset that Sony is helping fund this in some way (I read somewhere it's just helping market the game).  This is easily the most fair Kickstarter out there.  For $29 you get what should be a $60 game from mostly the original folks that made the first two games.  It's a no brainer for fans of Shenmue... hopefully others jump on the band waggon even for just a good deal.    I'd love to see this a huge success as I've waited 14 years and now another ~2.5 years to go.  This is what I need to stay motivated to play videogames.  I don't care what system it came too, if I didn't own it... I'd buy it!  Or at least I'd upgrade a pc or something.

Debating strongly with myself for tomb raider at $12. Played and platinumed on PS3 but would like to play it again but don't know if I want it digital.

Idk why I can't load store but is there anything I should get for ps 4? I have $56 in wallet and another $40 would be $100 so I'd add it if there's stuff worth for ps4?
I'll have to buy on browser on iPhone so please reply
Thx

The iOS and Android Playstation apps have been updated to allow PSN card redemption within the app, by using the keyboard or by scanning the card with the device camera.

I would put some serious money into a Legend of Dragoon remake or even a sequel.

I would also give Nintendo a lot of money for a Crystalis remake. Getting desperate enough for that game on a newer console that I may well even suck it up and play the GBC version with all its stupid changes, were that made available.

To be honest, I can't possibly imagine why someone would get Tomb Raider if they were new to PSN. Tomb Raider is in almost every way a reskin of Uncharted only with every detectable angstrom of breezy fun and charm surgically removed. I mean it's almost literally a dark ugly nihilist mirror of Nathan Drake's breezy fun, right down to the gratuitous explosions, the "Whoawhoahowhoa" of Drake getting pounded around by everything he deals with replaced with Lara whimpering through her dismal suffering simulator, the spoiler twist of the first Drake getting played straight with no twist in TR...

I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a fine game. Good mechanics, good stuff to look at, nice shooting/melee mix. Absolutely worth playing but... even that disappointing mess Uncharted 3 is more entertaining.

The worst part? Drake is so much closer to TRL/A/U Lara than Punished Lara if you put your finger on the scale to account for the different styles of charm, delighted mastery versus lucky rogue.

I personally liked how Tomb Raider was much grittier and darker overall than the Uncharted games. I love them both but certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from playing TR just because of the Uncharted series.

It did get away from the actual tomb raiding, aside from the many optional tombs. But the gameplay and set pieces were excellent.

For me, Tomb Raider felt like a much more engaging experience than Uncharted in nearly every way. I do prefer the characters and story in Uncharted, but in terms of gameplay I think Tomb Raider has better shooting mechanics, better traversal, FAR better exploration, more depth and sense of character progression, and more variety thanks to the crafting, upgrade system, and weapons.

Uncharted is the type of game I probably would have never even finished if not for the production values and great presentration, because underneath it all it's just not that interesting of an experience. On the other hand, I found a lot to appreicate in Tomb Raider in spite of the fact that the story was weak and most of the characters were annoying. It just has more substance than any of the Uncharted games when it comes to what matters to me, which is gameplay and design.

I'd love to fill my vita up with them as well

I had to try and find the music from the R&C trailer.

I'm not sure I am capable of parrying such an argument. I found myself wishing for a post-game wave combat style mode in Tomb Raider because I certainly enjoyed the parts of the game I can play. And my experience with Uncharted did not leave me so longing (That said, you shoot a lot more people a lot more often in Uncharted. Sometimes interminably so when they lose track of pacing in Uncharted 3.) though I can say DRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE was a better final boss than I expected. I cannot speak to the enduring quality of Uncharted's mechanics as much as I could Tomb Raider's as my memory is not up to the task. That said, I don't care for stat/progression systems ever and upgrade systems rarely as anything but busywork.

I don't mind grit and dark but the grit and dark felt so artificial, in part because it tried to layer a survival curtain over Uncharted's scripted explosion roller coasters and copious shootouts. You could sense the authors' thumb on the scale, keeping it weighed toward pain. After a while it just felt like a Lara suffering sim and the entire story would have been pretty much Uncharted 3 more coherent and less stupid edition if they just
didn't kill off the two old school adventurer characters and they survived cracking wise, killing cultists, showing Lara the ropes while bickering about the good old days blah blah.
It's a minor nitpick, again. I do enjoy the game. It just hews so close to the Uncharted at times that I just wish we had Drake back sometimes. Or TRL era Lara.

I took a long break from Tomb Raider after the first hour because the way they beat the shit out of Lara in such an artificial attempt to make you care about her through empathy/violence, but when I came back, it was definitely a better experience. They did not need to stoop to such cheap tactics to sell me on this newbie Lara, so that cheapened the experience for me at first.

I know they advertise that it's is lighter and more power efficient but I wonder if there are any physical changes to the console beside the matt finish. I have a vertical stand that I'm rather fond of.

To be fair, it's tough to name even one thing memorable about the game's plot/events beyond that. That was their claim to fame and they had to ride it.

This is why I don't like grim. It's always watered down and flavorless and bland. Except when it's Nier, then it's unintentionally hilarious. Or when it's Watchmen but even that was a magnificently produced ugly soulless piece of work. And in that broad spectrum subgenre of theme flavor, there are precious few Watchmens.

Of course to me I just kept thinking as Lara was subjected to untreated wound after untreated wound, "Well, at least she has the vigor of youth to walk all this abuse off."

I didn't find the story in Tomb Raider to be particularly grim, but that's probably because I couldn't take the characters seriously enough to really care about what was happening to them. Luckily, the characters were goofy and awkward enough to keep from being completely intolerable so I was able to appreciate the things the game did well, which actually turned out to be a lot of things. Not all games can have characters that are as well realized and easy to root for as Uncharted, but I'll take a so-bad-its-almost-interesting character like the ones in Tomb Raider over the utterly bland and unpalettable characters from, say, pretty much any Ubisoft game, every time.

Say what you will about Ubisoft and I will usually agree, but they can make a good bro character when they try. The ending to Conviction was downright magical. "Brother... that's family, right?... Yeah... I thought so."

I think Splinter Cell has the advantage of originating in a time before their fomulaic open world games. I actually like the characters from older stuff like Sands of Time, Splinter Cell, and Beyond Good & Evil. But man, I just don't want to play as any of the charcaters they've made in the last five years or so.

I keep trying to make it through Uncharted, in part because everyone loves the series and in part because I'm friends with one of the lead designers of 2 and 3. But the first one is just too difficult for me, which is especially weird given the light tone of the series. I can't make it past level 4 where there seems to be an endless stream of enemies.

It's frustrating and inexplicable. I'm in my late 30s and grew up playing super-hard arcade and console games. But for whatever reason, I can't get past level 4 of Uncharted. Oh well, I'll try again when the PS4 remasters come out. If I can't beat the first one then, I'll just skip to 2 and 3.

I didn't have this issue with Tomb Raider. In fact, I beat the game and don't remember dying much other than on the QTEs. So that is another potential difference between the two, in addition to tone.

Tomb Raider was a great game, but I do agree the tone was unearned. This is a series that took its inspiration from Indiana Jones pulp and became a hit in part because it let teenage boys shoot dinosaurs while back-flipping and looking at boobs. Not every series needs the Chris Nolan treatment.

You could just be bad, old man.

That said, regen health cover shooters are not my favorite games because you tend to be so damn brittle that only one mistake offs you and the definition of mistake is applied very, very generously in the game's favor. Uncharted 1 is also rough around the edges being a launch title and having that awful motion grenade throwing but still a solid story.

Tomb Raider did a better job of balancing it, certainly. Lara could take as many bullets as she could puncture wounds and I think there was a nifty dodge move and some melee back and forth that gave it enough of a state space to play with.

True. Once you hit AC and FC3, the protags are pretty much all ciphers. Though with FC3 I'm fine because everyone else is interesting. AC? Eh... (I wish I knew what was going on in the design of FC3. The trailer had the drug professor saying things he never said in the game to suggest a trippier tone than what we got... not that I minded what we got.)

SC has an established main character who is a badass soldier and has a daughter and routinely talks with the lady on comms. Even when they shift the tone of the universe twice in two games, you still can't NOT write that character as a striking manly man.

It's not just you. I found Uncharted 1 to have some really frustrating combat encounters. Uncharted 2 is miles above 1, that I recommend to whoever asks me about the series, that they start with 2. I think some people would get turned off by playing 1. When I played 1, I would get frustrated that I would need a break from playing, unlike with 2 where the pacing was perfect and I never wanted to put it down.

Everyone talks about uncharted being this masterpiece series...I really, really like uncharted 2, but uncharted 1 I thought was pretty bad. 3 was kinda weird

This is perfectly defensible. I would defend Uncharted 1 just for being a strong start to the formula despite the weakness but the real prize is always going to be Uncharted 2.

It's almost like people are allowed to have opinions.
NOT ON MY WATCH

Uncharted wasn't a launch title. It came out an entire year after the PS3 was released.

I never bothered with Uncharted even though I think I own it. Uncharted 2 is probably one of the best 5 games I've ever played and Tomb Raider is right there with it. It's the only post-NES game I've ever played through more than once and for anyone that knows me and my terrible gaming habits that says a lot.

Well, I mean, sure, they refined some aspects of Uncharted; it came out after Uncharted.

But I can't believe you're giving any credit to it's crafting and upgrade systems. Tomb Raider's 'crafting' system was so obviously unfinished and taped on, some deeper mechanic they'd hoped to code but ran out of time for. Hunting for stuff at the beginning, for example, you get those materials that do what exactly? Oh. Pretty much nothing.

And the tombs? Awful. Terrible. The tombs in Lara Croft Guardian of Light were 100x better. The tombs in Tomb Raider were, like crafting/materials, silly little pittances that were (hopefully) a result of a missed deadline.

don't get me wrong, the game got some stuff right, but it got a lot wrong too.
