:ps4: Foul Play - $2.00 to $100.00 [customspoiler='Fine Print'] :ps4: Foul Play is a part of the PlayStation Heroes program, which means that you can pay your choice among a variety of price points for an item that is usually a theme for entries into a contest to win some prize with most of the money going to a charity. There are no details at the moment for what the prize for buying Foul Play offers, so I'll post that whenever it's announced.

Edit: From the PlayStation Heroes app on PS4, the Foul Play promotion is for a trip to PlayStation Experience in December. Once you purchase the game, you're supposed to go here to register for the actual contest, though you should wait until the page is updated for the PlayStation Experience promotion instead of whatever it's on at the moment.[/customspoiler]

I'm interested in 3rd Birthday and Tactics Ogre, but $10 a piece seems overpriced for psp games...are these worth the price?
Tactics Ogre is a long game and has replay value also.

I haven't played much of the The 3rd Birthday yet but it seems like a fun enough game. $5-7.50 would be a better price but who knows if it will ever drop that low.

The 3rd Birthday has only been on sale twice in the 4.5 years it has been out on PSN with the other being in January for the same price, so it's not like that happens very often.

So.. How is Gauntlet on the PS4? good? bad?

And I take it the Necromancer DLC on PC will be DLC at some point? (Or is it included in the "Slayer Edition"?)

Ahh nvm the Necromancer is $4.99 DLC. Stupid PSN store layout.. Click on a game from their special pages and you can't see any DLC listed, do a search for the game.. and *then* you can see any DLC.

Anyway, how does it play? $25 (with DLC) may be too much.. may wait till a sale.

*opens up PSN*

So let's see what's on sale.

*looks*

I think I have a problem.

I really enjoyed Gauntlet on PC for what it's worth. There's no good demo out there but basically the melee dudes hack and slash and dodge (The Valkyrie blocks) while the archer shoots and plants bombs and the wizard kills everything with Magicka style commands. The necromancer is a solid 5th character, you use summoned skeletons to attack so your melee attacks have a bit of range and a blind spot up close and you are constantly building meter to spawn swarms.

Unlike what you expect of Gauntlet, there actually are interesting mechanics. It's a fine game solo and I'm looking forward to the changes in the new version. Hopefully they don't gum it up with stat grind or other crap.

EDIT: Apparently the new version is out and changes a lot. My review may be inaccurate. Gonna test it now.

I really think most people in Gauntlet forums are utterly incapable of reasoning about or understanding this game. They keep crying for more stat upgrades and perks like that's a good thing.

Disappointed in these sales, I already own most of the titles I'd be interested in except for XIII-2/LR and DmC.

Then I see that only LR is remotely considered a kind of maybe deal, I can find the other two for cheaper if I just go physical.

Might grab some of the PS1 classics if I find a decently priced Vita on AWD.

Quality games just really poor sales :\ Wallet is safe for now.

I should have mentioned I have Gauntlet for PC also. I liked it, didn't understand all the hate for it really. (not like it was a lot, but there was some hate)

I picked up the Necro DLC during a sale, but have not played with her yet. I keep intending to go back and play it again.. Life gets in the way.

I think I may wait for a sale to grab it on PS4. Hope it's good so I will be waiting to watch the PS4 exclusive gameplay vids.

Idk everyone. Idk.

Parasite eves look tempting but will I actually ever play them?!

I just don't know.

Thexder Neo is finally mine. I remember drooling at the box art for the original Thexder as a kid in my local babbages wishing I could afford an Amiga.

The update is live on PC so you can right now go taste what the PS4 version will be like.

You think "Oh, Gauntlet? From the maker's of Magicka? Welp, no sense even TRYING to enjoy that solo or sober." But no. It's a clever game made cleverer still with the update.

The new camera sucks though.
Even though I have finished Enslaved I always wanted the DLC, so decided to grab the premium edition to mop up missed trophies and for the DLC..

I spent a lot on this sale, my pickups are:

Beach Buggy Racing
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited
ENSLAVED: Odyssey to the West Premium Edition
Furmins
King Oddball

Not bad for what is about the cost of a single retail game.

Wish I had grabbed Flame Over and Puddle from week 1, oh well.
Crap. I forgot to buy enslaved. I knew i was missing a game.
I as well beat the game but never bought/played the DLC

Anyone thinking about Parasite Eve 2, for the love of Aya Brea look up some reviews before you make the same mistake I did and buy it only to realize the awful tank controls make enjoying it impossible.

OTOH the first PE still holds up well, is tightly paced (especially when compared to modern JRPGs' bloatedness), and is worth buying and playing.

I put 80+ hours on DmC PC and I bought DmC:DE for my new PS4. I was mad DE never hit PC. Now I'm FURIOUS.

DmC looks amazing at 60 FPS and there are so many under the hood tweaks (Turbo mode) that really fix a lot of the awful crap about the game (No skip button on escorting Kat. Mundus is still a lifeless boring villain and when faced with a chance to explain why enslaving humanity ISN'T a good thing in the face of his eloquent case in favor of it, Dante can only muster obscenities.). There's still a lot of it but it's just a wonderful revision of a solid game.

DMC4:SE is pretty good as well but it suffers from the fact that it's still DMC4: An awful game. Yeah, everyone and their dog LOOOOOOOVES jackass don't give a shit Dante. He is fun. People are either combolords making videos with Dante or mindlessly giving lip service to them too. Fine, whatever. That doesn't change the fact that it's a miserable tedious game with an enemy roster that makes musou enemies look interesting. The levels are utter trash the first time, full of awful puzzles and platforming. I don't care about the backtracking. If they were good levels, it wouldn't be a problem because you are supposed to play the game six fuck ing times anyway because it is a complete casual snoozefest for the first two runs until you finally get some difficulty. Only now you triple that for having two more sets of characters to play. Oh, and Nero sucks. Not as a character. Only casuals whine about that. He just isn't fun to play.

Back on topic, Vergil, Trish, and Lady are all quite fun to play. They aren't hugely full featured but they stand head and shoulders above Dante and Nero in the fun department. Just being able to muck around with them is worth the price of admission alone. Though, given the choice, I would play PC and just download a 100% save file so I don't have to play that shit-ass campaign to get to the good part.

Don't get me wrong. DMC4 is still backed by a solid combat system that is not emulated anywhere else in the genre (Even DmC is almost as different from DMC4 as both are from Bayonetta.). But it just does every single thing it can to let down the combat unless for you doing crazy Dante combos is its own reward. Still, worth it if DMC4 combat at all interests you because it really is that tasty to sample.

EDIT: If you didn't play DMC4 on PC, first, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU. Second, DMC4SE would be your first taste of Turbo Mode and LDK Mode. The first is amazing because it helps you finish an awful DMC4 level roughly 20% faster. The second is its own difficulty which throws 4 bajillion monsters into each encounter which is gloriously stupid and as anti-DMC as you could possibly get without having black hair but it is certainly a fun diversion.

Treat DMC4SE like a toy to muck with, an instrument to learn how to play. It's FAR better at that than as a game.
Nero is OP in dmc4 once you upgrade his arm and guns. The arm will reach across the whole screen and the charged shot level 3 will obliterate everything in sight

First, everyone in DMC4 is OP. That's kinda the point. It's why I spent so much time describing the enemies as pathetic and the game as easy and that you must provide your own fun making combos.

Second, him being OP isn't the problem. Vergil can beat just about everything with just spamming spin2win and trick but he's still fun. Nero isn't fun. That's the problem.

Were Xenogears and Threads of Fate removed because they were accidentally listed on the sale? Also is the 3rd Birthday any good?
Yes and meh. The gameplay is tolerable but if you have any attachment to the first two parasite eve games, 3rd birthday will just make you angry

I don't know about that. I still go back and play DMC4 just because I think Nero is fun. Second best game in the series, imo.

I found it really disappointing compared to the first game.

I missed out on the Disagaea/Prinny sale. Hope the deals are back later this year. I'd also like to see Ys 7 and Lunar go on sale. Never see XSeed sales anymore.

both of those were physically on sale on amazon new along with tits and I think one other game for 10$ each nov of last year. shame you missed it. I think the other game was so1 going by my order history.

Really disappointed that we haven't had an Ys Seven sale in a really long time. I passed on Seven and a couple of the other games right before or around Cecelta came out thinking they weren't my type of game. Ended up loving Cecelta and have been waiting for another sale on them since and only Oath in Felghana has had one.

Can you post about your experience with Thexder Neo? I'm still on the fence about that and Moon Diver which is supposed to be similar to Strider but neither game reviewed very well.

I really like it, its a true spiritual remake of the classic. Here is a great review from CGR.

Is there any reason to get Final Fantasy 3 on the vita if you had it on the DS?
If you played it, you would know that it's not worth double dipping for. This game, along with FFII are the black sheep of the FF series. At $9.99, it's overpriced.

The story really isn't that bad and I understand that they were introducing the job system, but there is such a grind on the job system to master everything, it took a ridiculous amount of time to complete. Also, The characters overall were not memorable compared to others in the series.

Given that the remake could have addressed this unnecessary grind (but chose not to), I felt it really took away from the satisfaction of completing the game with everyone completely maxed. Once I realized that maxing everything was not something in my best interest, I just ran through the storyline to complete the game. It will take you 9999 hours to get everyone maxed.

That was the first NISA sale we've had in a couple of years, so it's not likely to happen again any time soon.

I would be interested in the community's thoughts on PSN Chrono Trigger.  $5 seems worth it for a true classic.  Especially since the SNES cart goes for $100 used.

I'm probably one of the few people on earth that never played the superior SNES and DS versions.  That said, do the pause screens on the PSN version truly wreck the experience?  The internet hatred of the PSN version seems particularly strong from those that played the SNES or DS versions.  However, does anyone have a positive experience from playing the PSN version?  I'm hoping the pause screen issue is overblown, but maybe it really is a frustrating deal breaker.  Thx for sharing.

Just note that playing the PSone version you will have loading....good old loading. You still get the anime cutscenes, which were new with that version, and their is likely some input lag in the menus and such. I'm sure it will be fine and I bet if you play it on the Vita it will likely load decently enough.

It is a classic for a reason and was gorgeous at the time with a great soundtrack and some great characters (still don't like the cavegirl....). Magus was awesome and Frog was one of Square's best characters ever.

Here are two videos i found on youtube, you can be the judge if it is something you could tolerate. CT is also available for original wii VC (port of SNES), android and iOS (Port of DS version with more touch controls).

Do you have access to a PSP? You could... *ahem* do some things to get the firmware in shape to run an emulated SNES Chrono Trigger pretty easily.

Have you given this a try yet? It's a snippet of Javascript that makes managing your PSN purchase history a lot more manageable.
OMG, PSDLE is amazing, thank you for sharing. When vendors start giving us the same access to OUR digital data that enthusiasts do, it will be a happy day. Sony should hire this guy, or at least pay him a royalty on this script. Looking at and sorting our digital purchases should be this easy from the web and the consoles.

+1 I played through chrono trigger on my PSP

If you even think you might be interested in mobile retro gaming emulation, you would be remiss to not own a PSP. I own a 1000, bought day one and later added a PSP-GO. PSP can emulate every console up to and including the PlayStation/PSX, and the screen and controls are perfect for doing so. You can also get a microSD to MSPD adapter for storage. It's really perfect, and perfectly inexpensive for retro gaming.

I will always have a PSP in my collection until CFW is released for Vita, that's the only thing I can imagine might replace it.

Noticed there are some games on sale that are under $9.99 which I don't own yet.

Any recommendations on the following games:

Front Mission 3

Elevator Action Deluxe

Vagrant Story

Moon Diver

Citizens of Earth

TorqueL

Right now I have Thexder in my cart.  Any feedback is welcome.

I have resisted most of these FF (and S-E) sales because I know if I buy these games they are only going into the black hole backlog.  That is the backlog beyond the backlog where I'm not sure I'll ever actually have the time required to play them completely.  I did grab FF7 during one of the sales last year but still have yet to play it digitally (I used to own a black label version on PS1).   I have it loaded on my PSTV.. if I manage to start it I think it'll only confirm that I just don't have as much time for this stuff as I used too.  So I think I'm safe this week.

Been playing the heck out of some of my recent purchases.  King Oddball on PSTV has been great fun.  I'm nearly through with all the levels and trophies.  That's not due to lack of content it's just I dominated this on iOS and have just put the time in!  Also of note Rock Boshers DX is fantastic.  I like top-down games with single screen levels.  Collecting all three items per level is cool but what is better is replaying levels speed run style for the leaderboards.  I have loved many speed runners and with this I already have top 14 scores in the first 5 or so levels.  Oh and the minigames that unlock are actually good.  Especially the Aqua Kitty one.  I think I'll have to grab Aqua Kitty DX next time it goes on sale and pay more attention to what Tikipod makes next.

The PSP is a great system for all the other stuff it can do as well as the library of games.  To me the PSP-Go model is where it's at since it has 16gb of internal storage.  I think the battery life is a little better for playing games than my original PSP2000 (though it's probably not for digital vs digital games it just seems like it lasts a long time).  If the Vita came with 16gb or more of internal storage (or used something common like micro-sd cards) I would have bought one ages ago.   I've actually been playing my PSP-Go at night lately to remind myself how much stuff I have left to play before actually needing a Vita.   Granted I know eventually I'll buy one, but I have some other expenses to worry about right now.

Moon Diver is another spirtual successor to the arcade/Genesis version of Strider. Even as a die-hard fan of that series I really couldn't get into Moon Diver. There's a lot of repetition in the eviroments and enemies. There may be some fun to be had if you have some friends you can play through the game with, but otherwise you'd be best off to avoid it and just pick up the Strider reboot instead.

Kung Fury looks like a straight up ripoff/homage/sendoff of One Finger Death Punch. OFDP nailed that gameplay SO perfectly I doubt Kung Fury can hold a candle to it.

Walking games: Not even ONCE. Get that filthy indie garbage away from me. I'm not young and stupid any more. You can't trick me into thinking you're deep just by being vague.
So you're saying you got old?

THERE'S THE PUNCHLINE!

Thexder Neo is finally mine. I remember drooling at the box art for the original Thexder as a kid in my local babbages wishing I could afford an Amiga.
Holy crap. I have pretty much the SAME memories -- distinct memories of going into Babbages to buy Thexder for the Apple IIgs. I don't remember buying most games, but that one -- clear as day. I have no idea why.

How is it? Worth grabbing this one?

Specifically, I"m curious about the PSP version since i'd play it on my vita, not my ps3.

Idk everyone. Idk.

Parasite eves look tempting but will I actually ever play them?!

I just don't know.
Who cares if you actually play it? You own it, you win. All of us spend far more time enjoying the 'should I buy this game at this price' dance than we do actually playing games, which is most evident when you see people freaking out during a week with no good sales, even though they have thousands of hours in backlogged games.

Were Xenogears and Threads of Fate removed because they were accidentally listed on the sale? Also is the 3rd Birthday any good?
Blog comment implies that SE originally had them in the sale, but removed them, which caused the disconnect we saw. But it depends on how you read the comment.

Welp, you saved me $3. Can't handle tank controls. I assume from your post the first doesn't have them. Will buy, assuming i don't already own it.

Definitely worth it. While it may have loading times, it's still fantastic and easily playable on vita.

+1 I played through chrono trigger on my PSP
are all models of PSP moddable? I have one somewhere... a later model, need to go check. i never use it due to vita... but I'd be interested in emu.
