Don't know what to think about Alice: Madness Returns. The story was pretty good and the art style and level design were great, but the actual combat was kinda bland though mostly competent. You start with just a knife which is a fairly high damaging, short range weapon (press square) and then you gain more as you play. A wooden hobby horse which you use as a giant, overhead slamming hammer (press triangle), and a gatling gun and grenade launcher which you only have so many shots before they overheat and then you have to wait to fire them again. You also get a remote mine which doubles as a decoy that enemies will attack instead of you.
The hobby horse is pretty pointless as it is slow, does not do that much damage or have that big of splash damage even when fully upgraded. If it knocked back enemies or stunned enemies it would have a purpose. But particularly once you gain access to the grenade launcher it really becomes pretty useless as it does more damage and has a bigger blast radius. By comparison the knife is so quick if I am getting surrounded it is preferable to slash a few times and then switch lock on targets and slash the other, fire a volley of grenade at point blank range, or just use the short range teleport of R2 to get away. I wish the melee component of the combat wasn't so shallow.
