And all that music still sounds awesome today. Dokken. GnR (Slash era). Motley Crue. All still good shit! Just wish there were fewer ballads...
Some of the ballads were the bands bests songs though. For example, Beth is just about the only song I would put in the awesome category from Kiss.

Van Halen and Kiss came out in the 70s though so I don't believe they qualify as hair bands
I was just about to post something along these lines. It makes me laugh how people have that distinction. Apparently all rock music from a certain era was crap because of the hairspray they used, but from a decade earlier have all the long hair you want and you are kings of rock. Good music is good music to me regardless of what current pop trend gimmick was used to market the bands.

You guys keep throwing out names of 80s artists, but you're missing the obvious. Greatest example of hair band awesomery ever:

Dude.

No.

It doesn't count as hair band if there's no guitar in it. That's pure pop. Just because he used an entire can of Aqua Net doesn't make David Bowie a hair band.

Your wrong!

Good God, you guys are serious, aren't you?

Like, I could understand listening to that stuff as some type of ironic hipster joke.  But that hairband butt rock shit is laughably bad.

Sometimes I forget how white all of you really are.

Not enough likes for this!

Plus I refuse to acknowledge David Bowie from that era. His best stuff was from before we were all born (except for Chewy).

Fun fact: Michael Bolton co-wrote "Forever" for Kiss, which was definitely their biggest song from the no-makeup era.

Listen to the Crazy Nights album by Kiss and tell me that isn't "hair" music.
I'm familiar with their entire catalog. I Equate that more with a group of old irrelevant men trying to keep up with something they're not.

fuck now I have to listen to Appetite. Thanks?
Eh you know you want to! Turn on a little Nightrain, turn the volume up loud, and just kick back and enjoy!

Yeahhh I knew this too, sadly. Supposedly he also did a version of it. But my masculinity won't allow me to give it a shot.

There is no other era of GnR. Do you hear me?!?

THERE IS NO OTHER ERA
Say what you will about Chinese Democracy, but I saw Axl's GnR a few years ago at the House of Blues in Atlantic City and it was fan-fucking-tastic. 3+ hours of just about every song you'd want to hear them play. There may only be 2 members in the band from back when, but the replacements are all excellent musicians. I hope they come back to the area soon. Even if I think Axl is a fat prick, GnR has several great songs (and they definitely transcend the "hair band" label, IMO).

Lets play: How racist is it?

How yellow or brown are you?

Springsteen is in the same group for me as Bob Dylan and Geddy Lee. They have written and performed some absolutely amazing music. Just don't make me listen to any of those sons of bitches sing them.
Not to single you out or this post but it's kind of a shame because this is how the music industry seems to work and think. I mean it's like the American Idolizing of everything. Sure some of those kids have amazing vocals but can't write a song to save their lives. Most of the time I'd rather hear something that I believe the person cares about than the bubble gum over produced world we live in today. The sad part is you also have people that can't even sing Live but sound great once the studio is done with them. I fear for the future Bob Dylans.

Tangentially related:

I was in junior high during the numetal outbreak. I'm glad I was an elitist metalhead by that point.

I got Chinese Democracy when I saw it at the library and ripped it. One day while playing a random mix at work, a song from it came on and I got so pissed off at how crappy it was and how it tried to call itself GnR that I immediatly deleted the entire album and never listened to it again. Axl may be great in concert playing the GnR tunes, but don't call your new dum band GnR because if it doesn't have Slash & Duff & Izzy, it's not GnR.

Called BBY Elite line and told them I wanted to PM Walmarts Batman LE. The guy said no problem and I was off the phone in 5 minutes. The guy just asked if I'd fill out the survey they email me.

Try again Tyler.

This from the dude who complimented Springsteen. You're right, he's fantastic. Except for the fact that his ability to mumble his lyrics put Eddie Vedder to shame and the fact that he always looks like he's trying to force out a 50 pound shit on stage!

Single me out all you want. I wouldn't change a single word from above. There are absolutely great song writers and there are absolutely great singers. Unfortunately, those do not line up as much as I would like.

Saying that is what is causing all the auto-tuned bull shit we hear now is laughable at best. The issue now is they want someone they can market. They do not care if they can sing or write. They just care how they look in their underwear on stage.

You do not have bubble gum overproduced stuff when you have great music and a great singer. That can still happen, it just takes effort. If the main labels dont want to bother, tons of indy labels still will.

I'm not saying this version is better, but it certainly has some coolness to it:
That one gets major cool points and is definitely better visually.

David Bowie covers are usually awesome though (assuming it is his good stuff from long ago). Nirvana's version of Man Who Sold the World on Unplugged is high up on my list of favorites. Granted, damn near every song on that is high up on my list of favorites, but still.

I can appreciate Bruce for his career and the great live shows he puts on, but I never really got that into his music. Some songs are cool, but I've never listened to a full album of his.
But those live shows! So good. 3+ hours of straight rock, no breaks. And Morello is his guitar player now, so those 60-year olds in the audience have to endure his guitar solos and it's fantastic.

I (fortunately? unfortunately?) had my musical awakening during the hey day of the hair metal era, so Bon Jovi was one of my staples. Of course those songs are kinda ridiculous now, but back then they were the bee's pajamas. Poison was my main jam though. Listening to that stuff now, Bon Jovi sounds less corny than most of those bands. I don't listen to it much anymore, but once in awhile I'll get into a mood where I listen to only hair metal for like three days straight.

Poison was so awesome. That was my first concert, with Tesla opening. CC Deville was the worst guitar player ever (although he did improve). I just remember they started Fallen Angel, my favorite Poison song at the time, and CC was on the wrong fret when he started the lick so the whole thing started awful for the first 30 seconds or so. But that Rikki Rockett drummer dude was no joke.

This one is pretty goddamn glorious despite the language change:
