PSNOT 3.0 - Let's Talk About University of Kentucky, Baby!

PlayStation Network alone generated more revenue than the entirety of Nintendo last year.

Look at how huge PSN has become. Digital gaming has exploded, no wonder PSN cards are constantly the top seller on Amazon. People are spending digital money like crazy.

No, not as bad as the earlier entries but it's still pretty much the same. Having one stick dedicated to movement AND turning makes things pretty clunky and having to stop moving every time you want to shoot something just seems weird.

Those were my initial thoughts after starting it up for the first time in years, but after playing through most of the first chapter I've gotten readjusted to it. It works, but it just feels wrong when you're used to moving so much more fluidly in other games. But I understand that changing the controls would call for other changes too (mainly enemy behavior) to make the game work so it is what it is.
It is a bit different, but it works for the series, well for 4 and 5. The first half of 4 is all about taking it slow and make every shot count. There's just not many games like that anymore, everything is about pumping as many bullets as you can into enemies as fast as you can. The slow pace and deliberate controls fit the game perfectly IMO.

That's cool to see. I'd love to see a breakdown of YTD by country, though, especially with physical sales displayed. I'm really curious about how purchases are divided nowadays and whether physical or digital is the bigger seller.

I'd guess retail is still bigger, but the gap is definitely closing.

I never thought digital would catch on this much, this quickly. I underestimated the convenience factor and overestimated how much people value being able to resale a game.

Thanks. By the time I checked the page before heading to bed, it was $12.30, but I still bought one. I enjoyed the trilogy enough on Vita that ~$4 per game is a fair price to go for the double plat.
BTW, don't forget that the individual PS4 games also have their own trophy lists. Only two plats total, sure, but in addition to the two plats you can also get another 10 silver and 43 bronze by playing the separate titles. Something to keep in mind if they end up on sale (unlikely, I'd guess.)

Do we know what all is involved in those numbers?  Like is PS Plus subs part of that number or is it just from game purchases?

EDIT: I think it must include Plus.  I missed that Network Services part on the graph.

Anyone else have issues on PSN Profiles where you click a game on your trophy list and it just won't open the page? I swear I have to click like 10 times sometimes before it will open, but when it does it's instant.

I think that's the CAG effect for the resale part. Trade-ins and flipping seem to be the norm here, but I think the only person I know in real life that consistently plays and trades is my cousin. I was anti-trading for a while because I liked collecting and figured getting back pennies on the dollar for what I spent wasn't worth it. But with GCU there is some value to be had now.

I was having that last night when I went to your profile then tried to click on Sun and Moon. No problems at the moment, though.

I have AC: China from when it was $3.30 in November; the other two would have to be the same price or lower for me to justify buying them a third time.

I know im spending way more on digital that I was on 360 (had a ps3 but 360 was definitely main)

I think part of it is the fact that they are discounting digital games so much more now than they were, good sales are helping people buy more.

Yeah, I don't think the average person really cares that much with trades. All they see is when they try to trade in need 4 speed and madden a year down the line and might get $10 back for the both of them. Only time I ever really knew people that traded, it was always trying to trade a system and their entire library in to get a few bucks off whatever new thing came out.

I'll be surprised if they put the other two on sale the same way now that the trilogies are out. Maybe they will. They're shit about DLC sales and the like though so we'll see.

The game is still one of my favorites of all time... I think there's just a little shock and adjustment that comes with getting used to the controls compared to what the normal fare is out there and I was experiencing that all over again after so many years.

I'd love to see a CoD collection without MP. I think it'd be better anyway since it would encourage people to stick with the MP of the newer games rather than splitting the online community throughout the additional titles.
I wouldn't buy it till it hit like $9.99 DOTD at BB. And even then I doubt I would. UCC collection without MP is one thing. But, COD with out MP?

Other then Ghosts I played many, many more hours of the MP in COD games. Even with Ghosts that was true but I didn't play a lot of it. Ghosts at least was a decent SP. Many of the other COD games I never got through the single player.

the controls are still painful even if they are tuned for the game. I tend to readjust to them pretty quick and it's still one of my favorites of all time, but I can't pretend that in 2016 the controls are as appealing to me as they were 10+ years ago. I prefer the controls in re6 (as silly as they are with the ground dodges/rolls and whatnot) because at least there I have the mobility to actually avoid a slow moving flying object headed for my face. I do think that re4 is definitely tank controls by definition (turn your body and push forward to move) but I'm sure you're right that it's not nearly as bad as the earlier entries.

I knew it when I went digital and you all made fun of me. I'm actually kind of half and half now (physical \ digital) currently.

Surprised most of you didn't pick up the LE Ghosts for $12.99 @ Amazon that day. I did. Then again if you just want the campaign $4 is better...but I got a cool steelbook thingy and you guys said those things are cool as hell. See I listen...sometimes.

there's a handful of dudes at my work that are pretty die hard gamers. I don't know that they buy every game, but every retail game that they do buy every one of them buys digital, day one, for $60 actual american money. I think four of them all had fallout 4 digital on day one. dark souls 3 also. bloodborne. not one of them buys discs even though they seem to stick to one game at a time. I literally don't understand it.

I fucking hate work luncheons. One employee is diabetic, one is on a super strict diet while figuring out food allergies, one doesn't like sugars and sweets, one is allergic to chocolate. As manager I get to balance all that shit. fuck that.

I am spending more digitally then I ever thought I would. Still not pre ordering $60 games. But when games are under $20 I certainly consider just buying it off PSN. Under $10 and I am likely to click buy if it is a game I think I might enjoy. I buy less games on release day then I used to. Still buy some but most I just wait till they are cheap. I will probably pre order Gears 4 on Live. Assuming they add a MP/co-op game mode or two I like to it before it releases. If not I might just get the disc. Will pick up some more 20% off Live credit this weekend at Target which makes it more in line with BB GCU and Amazon Prime.

Destiny was the only other full retail game I have bought digitally. And I bought it initially at Best Buy. Liked it and wanted the digital version so I could play on PS3 as well (which I almost never did).

Yeah, when I think of COD, I think of MP. Modern Warfare is probably my 2nd most played FPS behind Destiny. It was so much fun. Probably would've been my first plat if it'd had trophies.

I never bought RE4 again on PSN because I knew I would hate it.  The Wii was for the most part a steaming pile, but RE4 with light gun style aiming was fantastic.  I refuse to play it again another way.

First buying a 3DS game and now this.  I'm starting to sound like that douche that plays Pikmin aren't I?

Yeah I amazed how many people think nothing of doing digital pre-orders. Several people I know from another forum buy more digital tiles new at full retail then I buy physically.

Doubt I will ever buy more then a title or two ever few years at full retail (I am talking about $60 games) digitally.

Don't you have an admin that can deal with that sort of nonsense?

One thing they have going is GREAT tastes in games. I'm sure they don't know about your free gamefly library.

Kids with no families and disposable income can do amazing things.

Gaming Update!

  • Nova-111 : Fun little puzzle game (although the story could be fleshed out lots more). Definitely needs more check points. I died at the end of 2-1 at one little trial and error puzzle part, and then have to replay that whole level. If you don't finish that section you have to play all three levels of 2-1. I don't have time for this.
  • Hyperdevotion Noire - Slow moving SRPG. Fight new characters. Add to new characters to party.  Repeat next chapter.
  • Freedom Wars - I played this for about two hours straight last night (which is a rarity for me). 90 minutes of that time was spent just wandering around talking to NPCs as required by the game. Each mission just is the same of spend 10 minutes attacking the giant boss. The interface and layout is obstructive so you can't really tell if you're doing damage or not. The story is total nonsensical BS as well.
  • Stealth Inc 2 - Still can't get past 5-2. I really like this game and don't want to have to quit, but....

I had made a resolution at the start of this year that I wouldn't keep playing a game that I don't find "fun".  With Noire and Freedom Wars I'm not sticking to that. I keep playing the game hoping something draws me in.

eventually the wandering text fest in freedom wars does end even though it seems like it never will. I'm not sure the game will draw you in after that though, it's pretty much the same thing. I think I figured out that the thing that really sucks about it is that they completely block any progress you make - you get rare badass weapon drops and upgrade them, you grind missions to afford to level up teammates, you increase your abilities via the wack-a-doodle interface, whatever - they just up the difficulty on every mission so much that you never feel stronger. you get to the last fight and you don't feel like you've progressed at all - you actually feel weaker than when the game started. the post game is so brutal that I'm not entirely sure it can be done solo even though the rest of the game (more or less) can. but by that point each attempt at a mission takes 30+ minutes so it just isn't worth the effort.

I don't think I'd fault anyone for buying fallout digital day 1. You can play that stuff forever if its what you're into. Why bother with a physical copy if you're not into collecting and probably aren't gonna get rid of it?

Is anyone else just the slightest bit happy Nintendo is doing poorly? I mean as gamers we've pretty much screamed in their direction for at least the past 10 years and they didn't listen to shit. Kind of serves them right in a way.

Here's a snippet of a promising review for the Ratchet & Clank movie:

"an hour and a half of loathsome gargoyles yelling gibberish at each other over deafening laser fire, apparently pieced together with all the discernment and care of a fox dragging a torn bin bag around a garden".

I'm taking my boy on Sunday regardless, but it doesn't really seem like reviewer fare anyway.

I'm still hoping that they switch to 3rd party development for other systems, so yeah.
