Yeah, I played the DS version to death... but I'm enjoying the PC version, too. It's nice to not have to squint at the screen so much to play! hehe

Gah, amazing price, but I'd much rather have a physical copy of the game for the future. I can tell BigFishGames is reputable since no one has complained, but does it have staying power in the future?

You can buy the game on disc from them, too. You have the option when you check out.

+ $7.99. It nullifies the savings. Plus, it all seems to go through their manager.

it's just like any digital download game. you open the game and it plays, but you get one little message after you exit that says "Thanks for playing!" with a Big Fish border. it's not like it's a full program that runs in the background like Steam.

if you don't buy it because of drm (not even sure the game has drm) or the company, then you'll probably hate the future of the game market much

Heh, it's not the DRM or the company that bothers me, it's that I'm a traditional old timer who likes CDs because it guarantees being able to hold onto it for the future years without worry of online validation when the servers die or junk like that.

Yoink! Thanks OP, this is great! I have spread the word and I am sure a few more people will be introduced to the wonders of Puzzle Quest!

BigFish is one of the major casual gaming sites, so I can't see it going away anytime soon. Also, as mentioned in the other BigFish thread, you can use the code "DETECTIVE" to get 50% off rather than 40%. At Hallmark.com, you can send free e-cards that come with a free game (Mahjong Towers Eternity, Mystic Inn, or Sudoku) and a code for 50% off any other game.

In other words, it is the DRM that bothers us :)

At any rate, if this has that style of DRM, I'm not touching it.

For those who are curious, I took the plunge and downloaded Puzzle Quest from BigFish. The process seemed painless enough; they installed a client that downloaded and installed the program.

At first PQ crashed to desktop on my PC, but I patched the file from Infinite Interactive's website and it appears now to run fine.

Not a bad deal for $10.

Where did you get that patch?

Puzzle Quest keeps crashing on my desktop too.

I looked on Google and found the patch.

The Puzzle Quest crashing issue should be mentioned on Big Fish.
Yeah, the XBLA version is pretty much identical to the PC version...
'cept you can notch one more game for superior mouse control. ;)

Puzzle Quest PC is still glitchy for me.

I DL'ed and applied the patch. Game no longer crashes at startup, but the sound is screwy now. Sound effects (battle/menu sounds/clicks, etc) regularly go mute. Background music seems to be fine, but the sound effects will last for maybe a few turns in battle then suddenly no sound effects. Sometimes it won't even get that far. Going to options, etc.. doesn't fix anything. I hate playing a game w/o sound effects - especially since I paid $10 for this.

Update:

Was just playing and just got:
The instruction at "0x020534b4" referenced memory at "0x02060ac0". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

Arrg!! I've had this computer for years and never had so many issues w/ a PC game. Typically I don't have any issues.

I didn't install the patch, but I have the same sounds problems. The sounds was just fine on the demo though. This blows.

I'd recommend buying the CD version (non-downloadable) version instead, at someplace like Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Valuesoft-Puzzle-Quest/dp/B000VRH6UE/

Are your sound and graphics drivers up to date?

No problems with the game at all on my PC... guess it depends on your configuration....

Pretty cool, it has voice acting etc ...something my DS version definitely didn't have! Though to be honest...the voice acting isn't all that great!

To my surprise Costco has the PC version aswell near the software section for 14.99 (same version as amazon's).

Great for those whom have are members and want a non Big Fish Games version...
Are your sound and graphics drivers up to date?
Yes,

I checked that out just after the errors. I'm usually really good about checking on drivers anyways. I also checked to have the latest Direct X, the latest Flash.

The error only happened once though. I'm more concerned about the not having any sound effects issue. I notice on Puzzle Quest's tech help boards, other users mention having sound effects but no background music.

I figured out when the sound glitch happens.

Basically the sound effects are fine until my first attack on the computer - then I lose the sound effects. Obviously, it doesn't take very long in the game to get to the first attack.
I just opened a thread at the Infinite Interactive support forums:
http://forums.infinite-interactive.com/showthread.php?p=8713#post8713
I tried the Adm's suggestion:

I heard of a similar problem a little while back with somebody on the Gamersgate version. I think they eventually fixed it by changing the "hardware acceleration" setting on their sound card.

To do that, go to:
Control Panel / Sounds & Audio Devices / Audio Tab / Sound Playback Group / Advanced...
Then change you "hardware acceleration" setting.

No idea why it is happening though. I think it happens on some AC97 soundcards.

Cheers

-Steve

Didn't work for me. I moved the slider from each gap from "Full" all the way to "None", closing and restarting the game each time I lost sound. I still lose sound effects even with hardware accelleration set at "none" - again, the bug is triggered when my first attack on the computer happens.

I don't have problems with any other PC games, so I have to guess its the game.

I'm wishing I never bought this game....

I'm sorry you're having trouble with the game. That always bites. :p

What sort of sound card do you have?

Sometimes games will auto-detect settings during installation, so if you've got the time and energy I would do this:

- Uninstall the game
- Update video / sound drivers (if not done already)
- Update DirectX (if not done already)
- Reinstall the game
- Patch the game

That may or may not solve the problem -- I can think of at least one time where it did solve a game problem for me.

Of note, the sound in PQ will transition at wierd places but that's a known issue with the game in all configurations. The total dying of the music is wierd.

I hope it fixes itself. (If there is any consolation, at least it's only $10. I once limped through a $40 copy of KOTOR II that crashed to desktop every 15 minutes.)

Update:

Ok, I got it worked out yesterday. I was so happy to have sound effects again, I played it for a lot of yesterday for uh, lost time...

I think what it was the nVIDIA Ntune drivers which I updated. I thought I'd checked that before, but guess I forgot. Previous to that, I had run DXdiag, updated DirectX, updated my video card drivers, updated Macromedia Flash, patched the game, ran the OAL installation - many of those I even re-did and probably since then.

I am happy that the game runs now. To be honest, if I hadn't paid money for this game, I'd have uninstalled it long ago. But since I paid for it, I'll be keeping it. It would have been NICE if they gave the courtesy of making a note about the glitches in the game before I made the purchase. Trolling the troubleshooting boards, I notice that a LOT of people had similar problems - either losing music or sound effects, or crashing... and there didn't seem to be really any clear fixes that worked for everybody.

In that respect it reminds me some of KOTOR. A great game, but it tended to be a bit glitchy, even for some Xbox owners. (As I mentioned before, KOTOR II, which I didn't like as much, was horribly glitchy on a computer that was running Windows ME at the time.)

I'm glad I had the sense to wait on this game before I bought it. I nearly purchased the Wii version when it came out, only to read that it had a host of problems the PC version did not (and for $30, no less). The PC version, by contrast, has been a blast. It's been too long since I've had a nice hours-burning RPG like this...

Good grief, does the PS2 version work? :D So far the Wii, PSP, PC, and DS versions all have at least some issues.

What issues does the DS version have? I played through the whole thing and didn't have any problems at all with it. It as great with a stylus. The only weird thing with the DS version was whenever you started up the game for a playing session, the layout of the grid was always exactly the same the first go-round... And the XBLA version is fine.

Wii version just has bad graphics and bad motion-control...worst version by far...

The portable versions were exploitable in certain skills that was balanced in the 360/PC versions. It also supposedly had some sort of issues with certain companions.

Yeah, the companion issue... companions did nothing at all in the PSP version.

One thing that is making me very happy with the PC version is that it has a native widescreen mode for my widescreen laptop. It is nice to finally have a full screen game that isn't stretched.

If you want to eliminate the stretching, there's usually a BIOS setting that does that. It gives you a "reverse widescreen" effect, with black bars framing the image on the left and right, but I much prefer that to having the image stretched and warped.

Or depending on your video drivers you should be able to set that there (especially with an Nvidia card).
