Game: Shenmue - 5 disc limited edition (all mint when I sent)
10.50 (Game) + 7.50 (shipping)

I sent a game (Shenmue - 5 disc limited edition) in a package First Class w/ Delivery Confirmation like I always do. The person receives game says its all good except for the crack in the case. So we have been communicating back and forth, he writes well at least.

I felt bad because I could have shipped it in a box instead of a package with bubble wrap. So I was willing to go partial refund, but he wants $7.50 refunded because that would be proper to replace the case and erase the inadequate shipping. I replied back, I'm willing to go half the stated price ($3.25) but now I just want the game back, to either keep or relist (with crack stated) and ship in a box. Not even sure it's worth the hassle.

Question is, should I just give him the refund and be done with this? Or keep offering the partial or have him return (refunding him in full + shipping)?

Wow. Overcharging on shipping much? Christ.. it costs at most 3.50 to ship a game.

You should have shipped it in a bubble mailer, just give him the 7.50 back or ask for the item back and refund him the 10.50.

lmao. I would just tell the buyer that it's just a crack and let it be. If it was me, I'd allow for a refund but he'd have to send it back and I wouldn't refund the shipping price.

I don't think $7.50 shipping AND HANDLING is all that bad. That said, I keep my auctions to $4.50 - $5.00.

Seriously though, $3 to ship, $.60 bubble mailer, $.40 for printing, tape, wear , etc to print off label. $3.50 to drive to the post office and drop the package off.

Amazon's free shipping has seriously made people undervalue the work that people go through to package and mail items.

I think the OP's terms are more than enough. If the buyer didn't pay for insurance (not that I imagine it would cover this kind of situation anyway), then it falls with them.

The only time I would see this being an issue with packaging is if it specifically stated in the auction that the item would be shipped in a box.

Offer him the small refund and if he refuses, tell him to mail back your game with del. confirmation and you will refund him his money, minus your actual shipping costs.

I charge for shipping on all my auctions then offer insurance at the buyers expense and risk. If they choose not to pay for it (generally I offer it for just a couple bucks more) and the item gets damaged it's their own fault for being cheap.

I'm not trying to nitpick here, I just feel like being a smartass....half of $7.50 would be $3.75, not $3.25:lol: .

To a certain extent I agree BUT consider the OP's shipping was in a packge with bubble wrap for a 5 disc game?

Had the OP shipped in a well padded box, absolutely but he didnt so I think its safe to say his shitty packaging for this item is what the problem is.

Yeah but that won't hold up with Paypal. Insurance covers the seller, not the buyer.

He accepted teh refund of $3.75 (half off the shipping). Well for me, I normally price 5-6 depending on the game weight. I listed this one higher because it felt heavy and I did not have access to the weighing scale. But when I packaged it and weighed it at the post office, I found out I could just charge $6.00.

It's okay, my math skills are horrible when I wake up. I'm glad the buyer stated the value, because I just said half off the shipping price instead of a real number. Also I don't offer insurance unless I'm for certain the value of the item will exceed $30.00. I know it is meant to protect the seller and not the buyer, but I'm comfortable paying for anything below 30.

To break down my shipping/handling costs: $2.83 (First Class) + $0.18 (DC)+ $0.79 (package) + $0.11 (bubble) + $1.00 (gas to post office) ~ 5 bucks. I normally would have charged 6, but I thought the package would be heavy and end up being priority but it was under 11 ounces. *shrugs*

Glad it worked out for you.

Anyway, asking for a refund of the shipping paid due to damage in transit doesn't sound unreasonable to me. I'd probably have just gone ahead and done it. Although if it was one of the standard CD pieces that broke (front or back clear cover) I'd be a little cheesed that the guy wouldn't just swap them out with one of the 1,000 CDs he probably has lying around. If one of the pieces that is special to a multi disc set broke then yeah that's harder to find a replacement.

Yep, I guess Chitown is hoping to dupe ignorant buyers into eating the cost.

That's a good call. Whether the bidder buys the insurance or not I am generally over cautious with packaging and I always make sure the game is secure.
