question about wireless controller

sorry this is a dumb question but i cant figure out how to do it yet,
how do you go about changing a controller from being the second controller to being the first?
my controller (the first) was borrowed by my friend and now when i play i am always the second player, not that it matters too much but it could possibly if three of my friends play here.

i thought all you had to do was turn on the system using the controller of choice.

if that doesnt work turn on the system and re-sync it maybe?
