Are there any specific classic old 8 - 16 bit games you play every now and then?

I play Mega Man 2 once a year just cause it's the best game in the world. And no Halo or GTA can ever take that title away from me as the best video game ever.

i love to go back to the old mega man games

EDIT: and to answer your question, i go back and play through secret of mana like once a year it seems

Actually, I just busted out the NESter disc. The Megaman's, the Castlevania's, the Marios.. even if its just to hear the music.

I always come back to Sim City for the SNES. Love that game.

And even though I don't own it, Paperboy (NES) was always a favorite.

Yeah the SNES version of Sim City is awesome... for some reason.

Every now and then I boot up Smash TV (SNES) and Life Force (NES). When I can, Forgotten Heros (GEN) gets fired up too. Anyone remember Forgotten Heroes?

Zanac (NES)
Metroid (NES or GBA)
Blaster Master (NES)
Gunstar Heroes (GEN)
Space Megaforce (SNES)
Blazing lasers (TG16)

I could probably be trapped on a desert island forever (with electricity of course) with these games.

Mike Tyson's Punchout... just to test my eroding skills and see if I still got what it takes to knock that sum'bitch out.

Yeah, I do all the time. Nothing quite like a good Punch-Out every now and then. Plus, I always fire up Chrono Trigger every now and then.

I am perennially playing a game of Picross -- be it the GB original, the GB sequel, or the Super Famicom version. I also play Kirby's Avalanche pretty often, and I'm happy to report I've still got "it."

Does the Kirby collection (forget name), Pilot Wings, and Donkey Kong Country all for SNES count.

That's the first system I owned so i love to go back and play the games I started out with.

i beat Final Fantasy 3 and Chrono Trigger once a year every year for the past 11 years.

all in all i think i've played through ff3 about 25 times.

oh and i still live and die by Super Bomberman 2 with my friends, and Super Street Fighter 2

75% of my time gaming is on old school games. I'm currently playing Guardian Legend again for the NES. I just put about 17 hours though into beating JAK 3 and did'nt play anything else , so I do have my new school moments

Street Fighter 2 (Playstation)
Bionic Commando (NES)
Earthworm Jim (SNES)
Starfox (SNES + N64)
Baseball (NES)
Punch-Out (NES)
Zelda 1+2 (NES)

Its all about sonic the hedgehog 3 for me! Only add that to the Sonic and Knuckles cart stacking thing. I play that at least once a week just cause its fun and an easy way to kill time.

Also I play Dragon's Lair quite often just to stare at the amazing animation of Don Bluth.

Several other people mentioned Chrono Trigger... I also cannot resist that pull. Unfortunately, I have to play the PS1 version, which adds annoying load times. Bleh.

An interesting follow-up question: what current-generation games do you think you'll still play regularly in several years?

Y-ES! My old school game of choice! Although I think that has more to do with the story behind it for us...

When me and my sibling was little, we got that for Christmas. Try as we might, we couldn't beat stage 1. Then, someone broke into our house, and stole just that game. We did the whole police thing but weren't expecting much and forgot about it after awhile. Several months later- they actually caught the kid who did it! (Yay military base police!) Turns out he took it to give a friend a birthday present, got scared, took it back and gave it to another kid. Most importantly, we got the game back, finally beat the first stage, and found out the lil' spaceship turned into a lil' robot! And I've loved it since. (granted, I still suck @$$ at it and can't beat anything past corridor 1, but I stil love it!)

As for new games I see myself playing later... Dynasty Warriors. I'm sure I will be playing some take on Dynasty Warriors forever and ever. :D
contra, tecmo superbowl, nes wrestling, nes hockey- actually a whole bunch of classic nes games
This guy knows what's up. Tecmo Super Bowl is just about as good as it gets on the NES. I fire that up whenever my buddy pays a visit. But just the one, the other guys won't play me because I destroy them.

I usually break out the SNES to play a game about once a month or so, I'd do the same on the NES if it hadn't quit working some time ago. I still play my DC on at least a bi-weekly basis too usually.
ROFL..Old School....you kids crack me up :)
I still play SEAWOLF on my Mame Cab :)
Wow, you must cooler than us because you play games that are a few years older than the games mentioned here...You're teh 1337 old school, word.

Deus Ex for PC is in between old and new, but I play it every year and will continue to do so. Since I'm talking in between, add Parappa, Um Jammer Lammy, Destruction Derby 2, Mr. Driller, and Pokemon Snap to that list.

As for PS2/Xbox/GC games, I'd say Animal Crossing, Monkey Ball, Amplitude, Katamari Damacy, Burnout 3, and Star Wars: KOTOR.

1. Any of the games in the Megaman series (except for legends, blech)
2. Gauntlet (NES)
3. Chrono Trigger (i again am forced to play the PSX version)
4. Tennis (NES)
5. Tetris (GB (how could i be the first one to mention this?))

As for the other question about the current-gen games, i'd say Super Smash Bros. Melee, just because i can't get enough.

megaman 1
street fighter 2 turbo
super ghouls and ghosts
contra
castlevania 1 and 3
rc pro am
punch out
mario all stars (mostly for mario 1 and lost levels)
Pirates! / Pirates! Gold

im sure theres more, but those are good starts.

Until the GBA version came out I would drag out my NES to play River City Ransom once in a while.

As for PC games I still play tons of old PC games. Ultima 4, 5, and 7, Bard's Tale 1 and 3, Wizardry games (7 in particular), Wasteland, and a bunch of others are old favorites I like to replay whenever the feeling strikes me.

Hmm am I the only one that likes the original Dragon Warrior. I break that out and beat it once a year and if I have time I'll go through the other ones, especially 3.

I was just reading through the posts, also wondering why nobody had mentioned the Dragon Warrior games. I love those games so much, I have the menu music from Dragon Warrior (1) as my ringtone.

anyways, I couldn't say that I "break out" my "old school" games because that infers that I don't play them regularly. I play on my NES, SNES, N64, and 3DO more than I play on my Xbox, which is really saying something.

Here's some of my favorites:

NES:
Dragon Warrior series (o'course)
Mega Man series
Final Fantasy
Burgertime
Contra
Paperboy
Kirby's Adventure
(Jeepers... I'll stop there but let me know if you want the whole list)

SNES:
Secret of Mana
Final Fantasy series
Mega Man series
Rock 'n Roll Racing
Kirby's Avalanche
Kirby Super Star
(Ugh, again, let me know if you want the list of games I play)

N64:
Forsaken
Super Smash Bros
Pokemon Snap
Wipeout 64
Extreme G series
Star Wars Racer
(Same thing with the list)

3DO:
Need For Speed
Shockwave
(Listeroo)

There are tons of games that used to require a quarter to play that never get old... Ms. Pac-man, Mr. Do!, Donkey Kong, SFII, etc...

8-Bit
NES
Tecmo%20Super%20Bowl%20TS.jpg

That is, I would play it when my NES still worked.

Playing it on an emulator just isn't the same.

16-bit (I still play these on occasion)
Genesis
Gunstar Heroes
General Chaos

Sega CD
Snatcher

SNES
TMNT Tournament Fighters

The RPG's I play intermittently.

One nice thing about the Gameboy Advance is that I can relive a lot of 8 and 16 bit games of the past through it without dragging the old systems out.

A lot of Mega Man love in this thread, but did any of you ever play Mega Man Soccer? I used to play that with friends well into the N64 days, and would most likely still bust it out semi-frequently nowadays if I had an SNES.

Dragon Warrior IV (still my alltime fave and I still have my original cartridge and uber-taped up map/weapon list). Recently I bought one of the flash card adapters for my wife's GBA SP and I've been playing it on the GBA NES emulator.

Super Mario Brothers 3

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 3 for SNES (now I bought 8 or 9 for PS2 to try out)

Secret of Mana
FFIV/FFVI
Chrono Trigger

PC oldschool
Old school Gold Box Pool of Radiance for PC (needs a major slow down program to work - I still have my original 5.25 and 3.5 floppies in the box with manual and everything for the game)

Civilization 2
Master of Magic
Master of Orion 2

Snes

Zelda Link to the Past
Mario Kart
Street Fighter 2
Super Metriod
Mortal Kombat 1,2
Super Mario World
Super Metroid

NES
Contra
Pouch Out
Super Mario 3
Ninja Gaiden
Kaboki the Quantom Fighter ( have yet to finish....)

After playing a few of these for a while, it makes the current hard games look easy.

Every now and again, I like to go back to the original Zelda, Chrono Trigger, or Super Metroid.

Oh, and Tetris Attack. That was awesome.

Hmmm, I play lots of older games, I'm not sure there is a certain group that I rip out every year (outside of Christmas Nights, that always gets a spin in December).

For todays games that will be played in the future. I can see Amplitude, Ikaruga, and R-Type Final will be played in the future. I think part of what drives which games will be played is how different genre's take off or die out. Really, it seems the most played games are games that aren't available today. If you look at this list, lots of 2D platformers, non cenematic rpg's, and Mike Tyson's punchout (nothing today really compares to it). seems to be the main list.

Who knows, games like ESPN NFL2k5 might be played because it is a licensed football game that isn't Madden.

The original Sonic and Sonic 2 (IMO the best out of the Sonic games). Sometimes road rash 3 w/my 10 yr. cousin.
edit: almost forgot to mention tetris (no specific system). Been playing that and collapse in the arcade section.

In the future - I'm thinking my copy of Ratchet and Clank 2 may get some replay or maybe maximo since its stages are a lot shorter. Viewtiful Joe and Onimusha 2 for some quick action.
