She died this morning while in the Funhouse in Killer 7. *sniff* I knew something was wrong when it took 10 tries to load up the game, but then in the middle of a stage I got a DRE. I guess she just couldn't take the intensity of that fucked up game.

Actually, it probably just needs is a quick laser calibration, but fug it, I'm just gonna trade it in and get a refurb for $30.

the only benefit of a new gamecube is a possible package deal.
that's the only reason I bought one - GC+Mario Kart+extra controller for 90 bucks

That's too bad...Resident Evil 4 killed my Gamecube earlier this year. What is it with Capcom games anyway? I had had that Jet Black Cube since launch.

Yeah, not only did capcom sell out to sony, they now make games that break gamecubes. bastards!

just read on gamefaqs that laser de-calibration is a problem for Cubes about 2 years into their lives. who knew? I wonder if they fixed that problem. but at least now I know not to Ebay for one.

If anyone wants to trade a broken cube for a working one, pm me. deal of a lifetime folks.

I bought mine used a year ago and the warranty said it was made in 2/2003. who knows where that slut had been.

good thing refurb cubes are cheap.

not sure if this is YMMV but I was able to trade in my broken one at Gamestop today for $25, so only $35 for another. not bad.

Do the decalibration, it costs like $6 and you get a tool to open your other Nintendo consoles.

I was going to, but I didn't feel like waiting for the tool to arrive in the mail. I'd rather get a refurb with a whole new laser.

I asked them, they said they'd take it for $25. they will probably give it to some poor sap, like this store usually does. I think the guy who took it was new though, but I wasn't about to argue with him about it, like he said "corporate pays to have these things fixed" :p

No more Killer 7 for you

RE games have been giving my GC problems though...hmm....

ohhh man, don't even joke about that!

Look out for those capcom games, they'll kill your cube dead.

First time the GC dropped the price at $150, i bought it with REmake. After a couple of days of play, i heard a loud click and then i saw the error about reading disc. It only happened twice. Im still using the same GC with no problems. So, is that 3 years already?

o i didnt know if you was trading it in to like Eb or taking it to a nintendo place. I know with the older systems they used to have like a swap fee

Would someone point me in the right direction... where do I get the tool and how do I do the cal?

Mine crapped out after many years of 5+ hours a day use... I picked up another one but wouldn't mind fixing the one taht broke.

I googled and found a few places...

yeah, it was gamestop. Nintendo charges $50 to fix them if your warranty expired.

Ohhhh so now the Gamecube has issues? I thought things like this were reserved for Sony?

Don't even get me started on my epic struggle with not 1, 2, 3 or 4, but 10 used PS2s. the first time I bought the old model, I bought it with EB warranty and had to exchange it 6 times- about 1 a month for the whole 6 month warranty- before I got one that worked for about a year. I sold that one before it broke and picked up another used one about 8 months later in anticipation of Xenosaga 2(sucked) and DMC3. I had to exchange that one twice before I got a decent one, but at that point, I just didn't want to see another old model ps2, so I sold it and got a slim line, which works nicely.

the ps2, as much as i love it, is junk.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say either is better but merely that these problems people are having directly contradicts Nintendo's fanboys comments that Nintendo systems never have problems.

I guess so. I was a bit surprized to see that it was considered a common problem with cubes, since I've seen nothing but glowing reviews of its hardiness.

I won't claim to be a fanboy, and I've never had a problem with my PS2, but I've had my GameCube freeze (Metroid Prime and I-Ninja).

My PS2 has worked since I got it about 2 years ago. I had one before that, but it was mostly my fault about it breaking...falling off the shelf and all.

And I think Capcom has it out for Nintendo, no Capcom games on PS2/Xbox have given me any trouble...really makes you think :p

Wow, lots of problems with Gamecubes.

I have had mine since launch day. I have opened it, modded it, left it sitting around to gather dust during busy times (on the floor no less), and have zero problems.

Also, this is Nintendo's first console with moving parts. Which could have something to do with it.

I've had mine since day one and have played it more then any of my other consoles, (lthough the xbox is giving it a run now), and I have never had a problem not once and it even was pulled off of it's shelf by a controller incident involving a sack-headed chainsaw maniac.

my reset button is officially in the pushed down position as of yesterday. does anyone know how to fix that (without going in, of course)? the games still work, but i'm mighty pissed that i can't reset. i really like that function.
Mmmmmm....glad I picked up Killer 7 for PS2.
Are the loading times as bad as people are saying, or do they just complain too much?
Also does it lag when there are 2 enemies on screen like some people are saying?

On topic, once when my GC was acting up with REmake I threw it across the room (it did land on my bed, but the lid was somewhat broken and I fixed it) still once in awhile it will give me DRE.

Nintendo makes tough hardware. I remember seeing in a magazine the gameboy that was torched in a fire and yet it still worked. I also remember in another magazine they put it the GBA through the torture test including flushing it in the toilet and it still survived. That being said my SNES finally started to die this year after 13 years of owning it , it began to not play certain games. Every piece of hardware has a lifespan and the more complicated they make hardware, the more that can go wrong with it. So yeah Nintendo products will die but on the whole they usually last longer than the competition.

oh man, i should've tried that. My NES used to respond well to abuse. Then, when I stopped hitting it and started cleaning it, it broke on me. go figure

I haven't broken open the shrinkwrap yet (I just picked it up last night). Maybe I will tonight if I have time. I'll let you know, but I suspect that people complain too much. I read a review that seemed to be reviewing the GC version that also complained about load times. Maybe Apossum can speak to that (or maybe he already did - I didn't read all of his posts cause I didnt want to spoil anything for myself).

Load times for the PS2-- about 5-8 seconds, the cube-- about 3 seconds.
They are frequent and pretty hard on the eyes...for once, I've taken the seizure warning seriously.

Seizures, thats pretty funny. So the PS2 version is a seizure machine apparently
:p

no seriously, remember how old TVs had Vsync knobs and when you turn them, the screen gets all messed up....that's the Killer 7 loading screen. they both induce seizures, but I guess your chances of getting one are better with the ps2 version

I'm also surprised that so many people here have had Cube problems. I got mine a couple days before launch and haven't had any problems, save for a couple of freezing bugs (especially with Rogue Squadron III, but that game is known to be a little buggy).

I never had a seizure before. New experience for me :D

Ouch! I may have to trade back my PS2 version for the GC version.

Update: I couldn't wait....went and put my new black Cube on credit...gonna pay it as soon as my Nocturne auction is over.

But the funny part is-- they tried to sell me my old one again. I recognized a mark on it and I told him it was the same broken one that I gave them the other day. Either I mumbled or it must not have registered cause the guy responded "Oh no, don't worry about it, Gamecubes are the most durable system this gen."
I laughed and just told him to give me the black one instead. he looked really confused.

I think if you press x,y and start it'll reset with most games.

My Gamecube from launch has fallen of a shelf twice and still works. One time was due to my friend getting scared in Re4 and throwing the controller at me causing the controller to pull the gamecube out and fall. Another time was from my dog running into the controller cord while I was playing to chase my cat. Maybe some people just have bad luck? BTW this gamecube was bought at launch and has also been through every Resident Evil game.

now my new cube is a little sketchy-- I've been playing eternal darkness and during the cutscenes it makes this really loud sound-- kinda like the laser is constantly moving back and forth. I have to turn up the TV really loud to overpower it. I'm pretty sure it's not an insanity effect. anyone else have this happen to them?

Nope. My GC is giving out and it hasn't made any noises like that. I'll play a little of ED again just to make sure its just yours.

argh, good thing I picked up a warranty this time around. I hate buying used systems.

I bought a platinum one when they were first released, and Metroid Prime killed it within a year and a half or so. Luckily, it was bought from Best Buy, and was the only product I've ever bought a psp for, so I had no problems sending it in and getting a new one. At the time, I was looking up to see if the problem was common, as my gamecube would freeze every once in a while during MP, and it seems that the Gamecubes made in the first year, as well as the first few batches of platinum gamecubes, are the ones with a problem. If I remember correctly, it was something about a buffer overflow. I haven't had any problems with my new one, and it's about 2 years old now.

I think games like the RE games (minus RE4) for the GC give it trouble because its constantly accessing the disk. When you are in a cutscene you can hear it accessing it a lot and when the camera shifts etc...
