I could have sworn Raiden IV was slated for XBOX live Arcade, not retail. The actual arcade game is way to short to warrent a retail release for $40. Funny sidenote, I build arcade games on the side and the Raiden IV boardset goes for about $800 used..... yet Im complaining about $40.

Yeah, I'm not complaining about the price. Not when it would cost you $70-$90 to import the Japanese copy. And that's not factoring in the cost of importing a Japanese 360 you'd need to play it. It's a great deal if you think about it like that.

But it's strange they're charging double the price of Aces, with IV being only only one game (albeit the newest one). I think Aces is doing so well for them not only because it's a great compilation of three games, but it's a good value. Should be interesting. That all said, I'll gladly plunk down my $40 bucks, and I'm happy I didn't import the Japanese version yet!
I love this disc for $20, but I can't see spending double that on one game. I'll definitely be waiting for a drop.
Don't wait too long. Shmups typically see a very, very small print run and go OOP before they ever have the chance to see a 50% price cut.

When?

In the last two generations, I haven't seen any hold their price well. The last time I remember a shmup was sold out and going for crazy prices was Castle Shikigami 2. Shortly after, the publisher issued a massive reprint or sent out additional supply to retailers (notably GameStop, GQD, etc.). The price came tumbling down and still remains low. Even one of my favorite US-release shmups, Mars Matrix, is only in the $20 to $30 range for complete copies. R-Type Final, a game that seems destined to be lost in time, has prices hovering at the original MSRP from 2004 (new & sealed).

People should buy shmups early to encourage developers and publishers to bring out more of these types of titles. Otherwise, the waiting game seems to work fairly well for the cheap'm'asses. I already own this game, but I know I could've waited for a better price.

On another note, I would buy Raiden IV, but I believe the MSRP is too high. Before purchasing that title, definitely, I will wait for a price drop. A Raiden 'Compilation' with all the titles would warrant a $40 price-point.

Granted they have Treasure's hype behind them. Mars Matrix was released here at $20, so the fact that a used copy goes for $20-30 would suggest one shouldn't expect to see the game at 50% off. R-type Final seems to have been dismissed by the shmup community after failing to live up to Delta, but the fact that it has held those prices is impressive.

I'm not suggesting Raiden IV will be the next Radient Silvergun, but rather that it'll be scarce enough that you likely won't find it in the bargin bin any time soon. I could be wrong though.

Good points! Because of the Ikaruga XBLA release, I kind of forgot about it. :)

I apologize. My post veered from your original point. I was looking at long term ramifications, while you were talking about discounts. This re-directed our conversation to another issue. I should have positioned my examples in this manner: is there a time frame when these titles were heavily discounted or in bargain bins? The answer to that question is definitely yes. Were these titles 'freely' available at the discounted prices and was this time horizion long (3+ months) or short (1 day to 1.5 months)? I remember easily obtainable titles for long time frames, but I would need some hard data.

Ikaruga for GCN was $20 for a long time at BB. I believe its original MSRP was $40. Like you mentioned, it's long term value has taken a hit because of XBLA. Gradius V seems to be pretty volatile. I've seen a new sealed one go for approximately $22, and it came out at $30. I remember picking it up for around $10 at Hastings. In bargain bins, Mars Matrix was around $10. R-Type Final was $10 at EB for quite a while.

The time frame for the bargains were long. For at least three plus months, I remember many of those prices being valid.

This is a good discussion. In my spare time, I have been working on a model to determine price variances in games, so I like your type of posts. :)

I wish we would get more of this here: Another XBOX 360 shmup.

Japan gets a ton of these, but it's the worst selling system over there. :whistle2:(
