Just talking about the first party Mario Games where Mario played a key role. No spinoffs like Mario Tennis or Dr. Mario.
The games:
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Land
Super Mario World
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Galaxy
Obviously if you haven't played a game don't include it in your ranking. Now the controversy starts! Me first!

Super Mario World

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Sunshine - Although it has a pretty shitty difficulty level for a lot of shines, most are just right, which is better than the SMG and NSMB approach of having almost no difficulty whatsoever. Working a tiny bit for something > getting everything on a silver platter.
New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy - As much as I hate the single player for being short and really easy, multiplayer redeems this title to be tied with. SMG has absolutely GREAT visuals, but the level design leaves a lot to be desired. There were a few winners but most of SMG I was bored.
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels is way down here for being hard. Not "oh shit I need to practice that part" but "oh shit WTF do I do here?" Also tied with
Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)
Super Mario Land
---end---
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island I just couldn't get into. The levels were really long, as far as I remember. I might be wrong about this, so I'm not making it a part of my ranking until someone else confirms that it isn't just more of me bitching.
