Just talking about the first party Mario Games where Mario played a key role. No spinoffs like Mario Tennis or Dr. Mario.

The games:

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Land
Super Mario World
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Galaxy

Obviously if you haven't played a game don't include it in your ranking. Now the controversy starts! Me first!
Are you sure? You'll hate me even more than you do now!
Super Mario World
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Sunshine - Although it has a pretty shitty difficulty level for a lot of shines, most are just right, which is better than the SMG and NSMB approach of having almost no difficulty whatsoever. Working a tiny bit for something > getting everything on a silver platter.

New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy - As much as I hate the single player for being short and really easy, multiplayer redeems this title to be tied with. SMG has absolutely GREAT visuals, but the level design leaves a lot to be desired. There were a few winners but most of SMG I was bored.

Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels is way down here for being hard. Not "oh shit I need to practice that part" but "oh shit WTF do I do here?" Also tied with
Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)
Super Mario Land

---end---
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island I just couldn't get into. The levels were really long, as far as I remember. I might be wrong about this, so I'm not making it a part of my ranking until someone else confirms that it isn't just more of me bitching.

LET THE HATE FLY!

Super Mario World
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario Galaxy
New Super Mario Bros
Super Mario 64
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Super Mario Bros 2 (USA)
Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels
Super Mario Land

The number of levels in SMW and all the hidden extras put it on top for me, edging out SMB3. Galaxy is easily the best of the 3D Marios. I feel a bit bad about putting SMB down there as itw as the game that made me a gamer--but it just doesn't hold up well today compared to the others I put ahead of it.

Pretty tough to make the list overall, as I love (or at least really like) all of them.

Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario World
New Super Mario Bros
Mario 64
Yoshi's Island
Super Mario Bros.
Mario Land
Mario Land 2
Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels (at least the glitchy, Famicom version)

Man this is a tough one. It's really hard to put Galaxy in, since I loved my first run through, but I have no idea how it'll hold to the occasioal pop in and play that I've done with all the other Mario's. Well, let me give this a stab

Super Mario 64
Super Mario World
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario World II
Super Mario Brothers
Super Mario 3
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Lost Levels
Super Mario Brothers II

This is tough since I really enjoyed all the games. I would even say that Super Mario Brothers II is a decent game, played it a bit again last year, and enjoyed it.

I ranked SMB 3 kind of low. I absoutely loved it as a kid, probably put in 150 hours into it (was one of 3 NES games I had for a year, and played the heck out of it). But, because of that, I almost hate it now, not having other options when I was younger. It's a great game, but after about 20 min of it now, I just have had enough.

In reality, I feel like Galaxy is my favorite Mario ever, but I want to give it time. I know the 64 hasn't held up the best, but I loved it when it came out, and I can still play it now and enjoy it.

The official rankings - SUCK ON IT:

  1. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
  2. Super Mario Bros.
  3. Super Mario 64
  4. Super Mario World
  5. Super Mario Bros. 3
  6. Super Mario Galaxy
  7. Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
  8. Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)
  9. New Super Mario Bros.
  10. Super Mario Sunshine
I played the GB games way back when but I can't remember too much so I didn't include them.

It also would be interesting to see how much difference is between each number on people's lists. A lot of mine are near-ties, whereas others have giant gaps.

1. Super Mario Bros 3
2. Super Mario World
3. Super Mario 64

Those top three are pretty firm, and likely will never change.

4. Super Mario Bros
5. Yoshi's Island
6. Super Mario Bros 2
7. New Super Mario Bros
8. Lost Levels
9. Super Mario Sunshine

The rest of these games are all great as well, but will never eclipse my top three.

I never got even halfway thru Galaxy so I can't rank it, and I never played any of the Gameboy Mario's.

That seems about right to me. I've never played SML2 or the Lost Levels, so I have no opinion. Hrm. I can go download the Lost Levels from the VC, can't I? Suddenly, I think I need to do that.
