Ratchet & Clank: Up your Arsenal Beta Invite
hey! im an Insider! :) actually, ive been catching up with ps2 coverage since i just got mine a month ago ...so yeah, this is a good way to get me to play it more, other than the CC sale.. :)
I am in the same boat. I just got mine like 2 months ago, and it has totally changed me (I play a lot more games).

and I pretty much built a collection of PS2 games out of the CC sale. I got more PS2 games than anything now.

Looking at the PS2 list for the CC sale makes you realize how much larger their library is than the GCN or XBox.
Is anyone interested in selling/trading their beta once the testing period is over? I'm a huge R&C fan and looking to complete my collection of R&C items.
Requesting the same thing myself. Anyone who doesn't want their disc anymore at the end of the beta, send me a PM. Sure, the disc is utterly worthless afterwards since you can't use it online after the beta period, but as a collector I'd love to get my hands on this disc!!!

I'll part with my beta disc, and a Syphon Filter Omega Strain disc too. How much is a post-beta beta disc worth around here?

..crazy collectors...

Hey, i still have my Revolt disc from the xbox beta, and it makes me miss those fun times before all thoise racist a-holes went on thier. Seriously, revolt is still my favorite game that has been on live.

So will the beta disc for R & C only have the online portion? No single player on it at all, as in a demo maybe? I figure nobody knows that answer yet, but did the Syphon Filter beta have the single player too?
Does Monster Hunter benefit in any way from the HDD? As much as I felt the gameplay in RE: Outbreak was a bit of a dissapointment, the fast load times of the HDD made it way more fun. I'm willing to forgive quite a bit if a game attempts something new...
And I'm back... heh.

No, MH doesn't benefit from the HDD. Not that it really matters, because the load times for each zone are relatively short. However, that doesn't matter anyways because there SHOULDN'T BE ANY LOAD TIMES!!! I mean, take Final Fantasy X for example. Yes, there were short fade-to-black-load-type-screen thingies in each area, but the areas were HUGE. Sanubia Desert for example. Big ass place, big ass zones. Monster Hunter? About the size of a Resident Evil Outbreak room (relatively). Trust me, d00ders, it's a shitty fucking game.

Honkey. ;)

BASTARD!!!! then again, i got my Hori contrller for my cube from defender today, so im busy anyways.

EDIT: oh yeah...communicator...uh oh...

So very generous of Sony to put a whopping... TWO maps... and ONE gameplay mode in at the beginning of this beta test.

They'd better get some more stuff out ASAP, otherwise I'll be one disgruntled tester!

but the maps are hella fun. Me and a couple others kept owning a whole bunch of people.

And just so everyone knows, I got the same screenname as I got here

also there is a guy floating around who is from Insomniac, so I guess if you see him you could ask him about some more maps

on the message boards, my screen name is StevenSeagal

they put the wrong address on the beta disc, so its on its way today after a phone call from ups. Odd considering the free issue of OPM came just fine (April Issue?wtf?). So yeah, my gf works a close tonight, so i get to do some clankin later.

after about 5 games you start to get the hang of it(how long it took me). Once I got the game down and with some good people, we were whooping people left and right.

I think the talent pool is rather thin for this beta so far... at one point, my team completely blanked the other team. They were 0-11, 0-6, 0-4. I was 6-2, 70% base dmg.

18-8, 40% base dmg

13-5, 28% base dmg

Still fun stuff though. I love jumping and flipping over people's heads, dropping grav bombs as I go. I have never owned, played, or seen anyone else play a R&C game, but the learning curve is nice and flat. Very easy to pick up and play--makes me want the retail version of this game.

Sony better hook it up after the beta, unlike the Syphon Filter one. Got nothing for playing that slop.

If anyone wants to play later on, add me to your buddy list. MegaHurtz is my handle.

I seriously doubt you'll get anything, especially since this isn't a "sony" developed title.

Sony IS distributing it though. Of course, Syphon Filter was a Sony product, and they didn't put out for that. God knows they should have, since that game was so very lame.

Maybe Insomniac is more consumer-friendly and not such cheapasses about getting free QA work. There's only 2000 of us! Hook that shit up!

I dunno, people were flipping out on the message boards when they saw that the developers played and actually seemed to give a damn about what the testers thought

wild Wop I will add you later.

I am Casey Ryback in the game

EDIT: even a coupon for a couple bucks off the retail game would be nice (about insomniac hooking us up). A discount off the game I think would be more than fair and a really nice gesture.

I do agree that Insomniac's presence on the boards is a big plus. It's nice to post a question or a comment, come back a half hour later, and see a reply from the source, not just other gamers. Cheers to Insomniac there.

I like the coupon idea too. $5 - $10 isn't too much considering the amount of hours we're likely to put in on their behalf, is it? I'd still prefer full credit towards the game... it works out to what, $.10 an hour?

Full credit would be nice, though only a select few should get full credit towards the game. Not everyone is going to put in a lot of time to the game, and I do not think their effort should be rewarded. I bet some do not even install and play the game after getting it.

It would be a definite plus to get people to play the game more if they knew they could get retail copies for being an efficient beta testers.

Gee. And here I thought getting an (otherwise impossible) early crack at a game would be recognition enough. Not to mention that it's not costing you a single dime. You do realize how much of a privledge beta testing console software is right?
Gee. And here I thought getting an (otherwise impossible) early crack at a game would be recognition enough. Not to mention that it's not costing you a single dime. You do realize how much of a privledge beta testing console software is right?
However, when you force yourself to sit down and play a game that you may or may not enjoy, it can become work. It was work playing Syphon Filter for me. I can't count on two hands the number of times glitches disconnected me in the middle of a mission. I was stuck on the first mission for two weeks. TWO WEEKS of glitches, crashes, and disconnects. And the mission wasn't even fun! I probably would have sold/traded the free copy of that particular game, but I don't think the "honor" of trying that game out early was nearly enough compensation.

R&C doesn't look to have any of these problems thus far, and is genuinely fun, so I won't be terribly disappointed if I don't get anything out of this beta. I did find out that I may like the game enough to pick up the other R&C games, and this one when it comes out. Kind of like an extended free rental.

Then, on the other side of the coin, is Square. Free FFXI, Free HDD. $100 MSRP. HINT HINT SONY. HINT HINT.

What you just described I just happened to live through for 5 years. Being a paid tester is no better than a non paid tester. In fact, it's worse. At least you have the CHOICE to say "the hell with this crap" and stop playing the game. You think playing Syphon Online was bad? Try testing Elmo's Fun with Numbers for the Sega PICO. Or one of the Kings Field games for the PS1. I WISH I had a choice to say no.

Does sony give you the stiff that you need to get online and play if you have road runner? {network adapter, cables, etc.}. what about microsoft? does microsoft even have beta tests.what do they give you?

Sony gives you the game disc, and the manual. They probably won't even invite you for the beta if you don't have the network adaptor.

Microsoft often gives the retail game, promo items, or discount coupons to their beta testers. No idea how to get into their beta programs though.

EDIT

And daphatty:

I feel your pain on the Elmo game, but 1) you took a QA tester job of your own free will, and 2) you were getting paid for it. Not getting paid for a task means that I SHOULD have the choice to drop it as I see fit. The "employer" isn't ensuring my loyalty by way of compensation, so I put in what I think I owe them for the right to participate in their testing process and no more. I realize that isn't a consistent feeling across the 2000 people in this test, but it is reasonable to expect a modicum of compensatory goodies from the publisher (not the dev studio, in my opinion). Hell, I'd be happy with a T-shirt. I'm always up for more gym clothes.

Monday...I have to wait till monday...wasnt home to sign for the package. poopie..hey, gives me time to finnaly finnish Zelda 2

So, after a couple of days with the beta, what does everyone think?

I give it a B. Far too many interface problems/missing features in the lobbies and game setup screens. No mute/kick/ban player options for hosts. No way of knowing who is talking. No way of knowing what map you are playing while sitting in a game lobby. No rematch option (can't continue playing with the same people w/o exiting and recreating). Useless radar. Does not save your control preferences. Crappy rating system can put moochers at the top of the charts (seems to weigh win/loss over actual performance).

Sure, most, if not all of these problems will be fixed in the final version, but my grade is for the Beta version exclusively.

yea I totally agree with you. They have a solid foundation, and if they fix those problems you listed the game would be really really good
yea I totally agree with you. They have a solid foundation, and if they fix those problems you listed the game would be really really good
If Sony had a standard online platform a'la Live!, using the SOCOM 2 interface as a template (which remains the best I've seen in online console games), they'd have no problems at all. Shoot off an API to the developers, and BAM! all the necessary features at their fingertips.

There's just so much wasted space in the R&C interface. So much more information to convey.

Here's a question. A friend of mine is designing the levels for the online portion. During E3 he mentioned that the game was running at or above 60 FPS in their internal network environments. How does the game perform in the "real world" tests that you've been a part of? He mentioned that there would be some performance degradation when factoring in distance and variable network connections but I was just wondering how much of a difference there truly is.

Just got everything set up, i have wildwop added, but CR, your name keeps coming up as unavailable.

anyways, im off to play (WShakspear)

about a week.

and as far as the framerate goes, it does some pretty high, with some hitches here and there.

Its ok so far, reminds me a little bit too much of the original Conker death match, minus the pissing + more robots. Also, and i know its how ratchet works, it feels very slow as far as walking goes.

WHAT?!?! Socom 2 has one of the worst intercaces I've ever endured, IMO.

I will add you and WildWop next time I get on.

It is probably because there is a space in my name for R&C.

and daphatty the game runs very very smooth. sometimes I see a hiccup, but not too often.

Having played pretty much every Xbox Live enabled game and all the good PS2 online ones, I'd have to agree with WildWop and say that SOCOM 2 has the best and most extensive online interface on a console game yet, at least in my opinion. R & C's is just terrible.

I get most of my time in on Tuesdays and Saturdays, mostly before 11pm (work on Wed, going out on Saturday). My handle in R&C is MEGAHURTZ. Sorry for any confusion, Casey.

I got you added(you are ranked like 75 correct?).

If you end up playing tomorrow, bump this post up and I will get on.
