Hey guys, I was hoping I could get some music advice. This weekend, I'm hosting a small 'rave' in my apartment. It's really just like me and 20 friends getting together to wear glow sticks, drink and dance, but it should still be fun.

Anyway, what I'm looking for is a good playlist. Nothing too special, but something they would play at a real rave. Being in college and in a fraternity, I mostly attend frat parties where they just play the newest pop music, so I have no idea what good techno is. I'll probably end up throwing some of that in, but I'd still like to have some new techno/dance music to play as well.

So if anybody has any suggestions for good, upbeat techno/dance songs, throw them out here. Try to throw out the good stuff, as I'm starting to get into techno music, so some of this might end up in my library permanently. :)

Thanks guys.

Woo boy. Can you narrow down your style of choice? There's A LOT of different dance music but are very different in sound. Maybe you can list examples of what you'd like to hear more of?

Any Tunnel Trance Force mix would suffice really... but yeah, we're going to need some more specifics. There are so many sub-genres of techno...

Didn't realize there were so many different types. :/ Is there maybe some samples you could show me and I could kind of narrow it down? Sorry to seem dumb, but I'm almost completely clueless when it comes to techno. I like a song if I hear it, but I couldn't tell you anything about the song. :/

I'm just going to go with the most popular mainstream groups.

Daft Punk, The Crystal Method, Prodigy, Paul Oakenfold, Pendulum

And when the party is winding down, some early Telefon Tel Aviv

Those are good, a little bit of Tiesto and Justice might be good as well.

Oakenfold and Tiesto went mainstream and aren't really considered true producers anymore. The Crystal Method was more Westernized and not true dance music, kind of like Darude. Daft Punk, however is still extremely popular overseas. BTW, techno is generally high BPM, hard beats. People like to associate it with most dance music, but it's not at all representative of the genre.

OK, since Trance is typically the most popular form of dance people are familiar with let's start you off with some tracks of various styles:

Oh god, how could you even recommend Deadmau5? They're the poor man's Justice.

I'm really into french house electro, so I recommend you check out:

Mr. Oizo - Lambs Anger
SebastiAn - Ross Ross Ross
Kavinsky - 1986
Danger - 9/17 2007

Check out Uffie too if you like some rapping on top of your electronica. Also, Daft Punk - Alive 2007 and Justice - A Cross The Universe are great live albums that will have your blood pumping the entire time.

Now that's dubstep if I ever heard it.
I was going to offer up some suggestions for the OP, but now I'm worried that they won't be cool enough for Jodou.
Lol, like anyone cares what I think. I just know dance music and what's considered hot or not.

I was big on this music in the 90s, but I can see I'm way out of it now. I don't recognize anybody.

Early 2000s for me but ditto. Find a reputable House DJ and throw on one of their sets and everyone should be satisfied. A lot of what is posted is good (except for the FFVII happy hardcore LOL) but let the pros do the mixing for you

Posting just so I can come back and check all these videos out at a later time. Like this kind of stuff but don't really know shit about artists or anything.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'm working my way through the music now. I'll let you know what I decide to put on the playlist in the end. Again, this is only a party for friends, so nobody really cares what the music is, but I'm liking the good suggestions, because as I've said before, I'm branching out with my music tastes. I used to be exclusively 60's 70's and 80's rock. Wouldn't even listen to newer rock. But I've come a long way, and now that I've got a lot of free space on my iPod, I'm looking for some interesting music. :)

If you have cable with Music Choice just go to the Dance/Electronica channel, or Area if you have Sirius/XM.

Sirius fucking destroyed XM's awesome electronic channels. It was all about The System.

You sir, have excellent taste. That's a great song selection right there.

Hehe, thanks. I've been listening to dance music for the better part of ten years now and those are a few more recent ones that made it to my private collection.

I'm not sure what channels XM had but I think Sirius' channels kinda blow. Chill is ok, Area is too rave for my tastes, it's all John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold, and the other one (can't remember the name) is crappy remixes of pop songs.

I'd suggest some of the following:
-older ATB music (look for the album 7 Years) [The Fields of Love, The Summer, 9 PM til I come, and Ecstasy are all personal favorites of mine]
-Armin Van Buuren (anything he plays as "tune of the week" on his podcast is usually awesome)
-Motorcycle - As the Rush Comes (an all time trance classic)
-Gabriel and Dresden - Beautiful Things
-DJ Eco - Paradise Now

If you're not a fan of the genre, or that deeply into it, all of the stuff people are offering might be too broad or too narrow for you, with the exception of the super mainstreams like Tiesto or Oakenfold.

Just do as someone said and look up Tunnel Trance Force, or get a free podcast of Around the World by Above and Beyond or any of the other weekly podcasts, and play those. It'll generally give you a really good feel for EDM/electronic dance music.

I can see you're heavy into vocal trance. ;)

Armin is pretty awesome and I bump his show every week in my car, but his episodes are pretty hit and miss. People usually always vote up the weirdest tune of the week and if he plays one of his own songs/remixes it's almost guaranteed next week lol. Personally, I look forward to Club Elite Sessions every week because Mike NEVER disappoints. FYI, that site is legit; been using it for years to DL shows and never had a problem.

DJ Eco has been on absolute FIRE this year, so you can't go wrong with anything he's done either.

Someone made the excellent suggestion of downloading podcasts.

This would be the most efficient solution to your situation. Not only would a single free download provide you with at least an hour of music, but it is good means to getting you more into this style of music. Most podcasts of this type are weekly, keeping you coming back for more in healthy doses and would expose you to other artists.

I very much approve :applause:

Some of my personal faves/suggestions would be stuff from Dave Aude and Tiesto. You also can't go wrong with Kelis' new album.

Yeah, vocal trance has always been my favorite type of trance :). I would like progressive a lot more if the build-up was a bit faster from the early set heavy (drum) beats. I've only listened to about 50 or so of AvB's podcasts (not a big podcast guy), but I've tended to like most of the tunes of the week from his list that I've heard thus far. I'll have to check out the Club Elite Sessions, thanks or the link.

Thanks ^_^.

Have you tried The Kleptones? It's mash-up house music, great for people who aren't huge into techno, a nice stepping stone between stuff you will be familiar with and dance beats. Oh, and all they're music is 100% FREE to download. If you're also a cheap ass listener, head on over. I'd suggest starting with Night at the Hip Hopera, or the newest one, Shits & Giggles.

NP, just be aware I enjoy that show because there's little to no vocal trance. I don't like it much because it's too pop for me. And speak of the devil, listening to Armin live right now and guess what the voted future favorite is: his own song from last week like I said it would be lol. This one is a dud though, everyone is hating on it.

M.I.K.E. CES is on next, if you want to catch his show live. Just head over to di.fm trance and grab the free stream for winamp/wmp.

Definitely some Daft Punk, Justice, The Prodigy...

Didn't see these but they're by far some of my favorite artists; A-Trak, The Bloody Beetroots & Does it Offend You Yeah?

yup, they are great artists for sure.

if you want something faster may I suggest some of these:
Da Hool - Meet her at the love parade (try finding a track with a faster beat, it works well)
RMB - Spring, Reality, Deep down below (club mix) and Horizon --- you'll thank me later
Dune - Hardcore vibes (original, most mixes suck)
Scooter might work to, but not too much try finding all listed tracks but play two maybe three: fire, ramp, endless summer, I'm raving, and move your ass.

Rave used to be about fast beats, at least in europe back in the day.

and since you said you want to broaden your musical horizons in the dance music I would also suggest some goa trance music (aka psychedelic trance). Start with Infected Mushroom.

if you can't decide or just want some dance music in the background for your party than do what many here suggested. Download some State of Trance episodes (one episode is 2 hours of continuous music) and you ought to be good. Also compilation CDs like 'Tiesto - In search of Sunrise' or 'Cosmic Gate - Back to back' should do the trick.
or 'Cosmic Gate - Back to back' should do the trick.
Ugh, why do people like Cosmic Crap? Sounds like they just whip out a Casio keyboard lol. Good suggestion with Psy Trance though. I used to listen to that a lot maybe six years ago. I think Glassball was another DJ pretty popular back then.

Yeah it's a hit or miss with their music but I suggested their various artists compilation CDs, you should give it a spin. Listen to Back 2 Back 3.
