RDR feels empty because it's out in the west... It's nothing but dirt and scorpions! There's plenty to do, and you do all of those things because, besides maybe doing actual, boring, repetitive work in a town (or kidnapping someone for ransom, lulz), those are the most productive methods that can also be fun.
GTA IV is awful. The story sucked, there were so many issues with the cover system, and the weapons were bland. In comparison, RDR seems more like a piece of art, as it feels so much more polished/done than GTA IV. There was almost nothing going on in GTA 4 to get involved with spontaneously.
Also, it sounds like Soodmeg doesn't know about the campsite / insta travel / stagecoach. Stagecoaches are in most towns (a wheel with an exclamation mark over it), which will take you anywhere on the map for a small fee, or free when you get to rank 5 treasure hunting. Including waypoints. Same with campsites (go outside of town, off the road, and go to Provisions in your inventory, and use the campsite).
I agree with DLC, but it does sound neat. Overpriced though. I want some SP DLC! The GTA 4 DLC was ignored by me since I don't like GTA 4 (bought it on release, STILL have not beaten it. Ugh.)
I already know about those things. They dont really float my boat in the way a video game should. I am simply bored with what the game presents. But seriously, opinions how do they work again?
