Redesigned PSP's impact on the market. (new design details)

As others have mentioned, the PSP is already the first successful non-Nintendo portable, which is already something.

One thing I think people forget is that the PSP is already a generation past the DS. Nintendo could release a new handheld a few years from now, and it might still not be as powerful as a PSP, or certainly would probably be in the same generation of hardware. In that sense I think the PSP has a likely shot at a much longer market life than the DS.
if sony would use their flexible oled technology into the new psp, the new psp could be amazing:
OLED has an incredibly short life. The first PSP's would already all be dead if they were using OLED. Unless someone can fix that, OLED will never replace LCD.
Honestly, as much as people bitch about the lack of a second analog stick, it's the LOADING times that kill it. For christsakes a portable should be a pick up and play. PSP is more of a sit down and play for a while vs in short bursts.
I've never heard actual PSP owners complain about load time. There are like a handful of specific games with load time issues (I think Midnight Club 3 and some wrestling game get mentioned-and some really bad strategy RPG). But most games are comparable to every other system. I've played DS games with worse loading time than the typical PSP game.

And at any rate, optical media makes sense for a system in the Playstation 2/X-Box/Wii generation of hardware.

I don't think there's any need for Sony to impose some sort of loading limit, and I wouldn't want them to, as it might stifle some kind of innovation. It's pretty obvious that the majority of developers handle the UMD format just fine. Actually most 360 games I've played have worse load time, but still nothing that's a big deal to me.
The new PSP is a joke. The changes are so minor that I do not see the point in them.
The point is to make the PSP better, which the changes did. I've been toying with the idea of getting a PSP and I think the new version has convinced me to buy.

What kind of cable is it? Does it come with it? You might be able to just extend it, though the signal could degrade. 8 feet is already really long.

Lies...But seriously, if you're going to say something that rediculous, please give an example to back it up.
Lies...But seriously, if you're going to say something that rediculous, please give an example to back it up.
Exactly. Wolfie, you just can't say crap without having anything to back it up. What DS games have any sort of loading time?

Load times on the system for quality software is not bad at all. Daxter, the Mega Man Remakes, LocoRoco, etc. all load almost instantly. That said, having them on the memory stick is still faster and more akin to a DS.

Huh? What weird responses. Typical for this site though.

All right, Final Fantasy 3 right off the top of my head. Individual load times are short, but it loads every single time you do anything. Star Wars Episode 3 is longish. I've heard of worse.

They're not bad, but the point is the Playstation Portable has never had any kind of load time problem beyond a few games, and you can find cartridge games with load time.

Side note: If you wanted DS level graphics, you could load everything into RAM and have shorter load times than any cartridge based system. Not that I want them to do that.

I don't know that the redesign will significantly push more systems, because like others have said, the changes are barely noticable. I couldn't even tell the images I found were of the new one until I read the article, so other than the colors there won't be a huge incentive for people who haven't gotten one yet - the only people who'll really appreciate the changes are those who already have or have played PSPs.

At least, it's not a redesign like the DS Phatty to Lite - when the Lite came out, suddenly way more people wanted one, they were just sleek and awesome looking. I wan't positive I was getting one until I saw all of the games at E3 2006 being demoed on DSL's... then I was sold.

The changes Sony has made are definitely good, but will the average consumer appreciate them?

Will the average consumer appreciate them? Not really. That's why Sony is hyping the bundles for value in addition to getting a "newer" PSP that will almost always hook in a sales or two from Joe and Jane Consumer. You know, cuz newer is always better.
Why do we have two redesign threads?
This one is old. Don't ask me why people are posting in it so much though.
