My wifes web site - Nice jewelry good prices.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

recent drop section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(recent_drops)

master list section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(master_lists)

they will be filetered from the thread posts to the WIKI page as often as possible. Thank you for your contribution.

Listed in the wiki is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals from the posts of this thread and similar threads. I will update the wikis lists as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. Please dont have a fit if a store wont let you have them just move on. Causing trouble rarely gets guides and most of the time stops others from getting guides in your area. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

What is a Penny Guide:

To answer this question fully, one first has to understand the longstanding legal agreemenat which [book] publishers have with book sellers such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and other chain and Mom & Pop shops, as well as other retailers who similarly sell their books.

For several decades, publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Random House, et cetera will send out X-number of a title to stores to be sold. After a time, when it is decided that those older titles have little chance of selling and the store shelf real-estate would be better used for newer publications, they issue a recall to the vendors to field destroy all remaining copies of titles A, B & C.

The stores then will pull those titles from their inventory to be field-destroyed, and in their systems mark the publications as 1¢. The 1¢ price is to indicate to the publisher that they are no-longer selling the pulled title, and it is also to serve as a Red Flag to any cashier who might ring up a title (on the chance that the titles were not pulled as legally they were required).

When the pull lists are sent out by the publishers, and the stores adjust the price in their inventory (and pull and field-destroy the books), the stores also are to report to the publisher the number of the books they pulled. (This is generally done at a corporate level.) The publisher then credits the stores full cost of the books.

So lets say, MegaChain orders 8000 copies of the Bread Baker strategy guide for their stores in North America for say, $4 a piece. They owe $32,000 to Publisher X. Bread Baker being a big seller and a hard game, then sells 6000 of those 8000 guides, leaving around 2000 guides on the shelves when Publisher X issues the pull demand. Publisher X then issues MegaChain an $8000 credit for the 2000 unsold copies of the guide.

According to IAmTheCheapestGamer, some retailers also have deals where each copy of pulled titles sent to their recognized Recycling Centers are additionally issued further credit for being environmentally responsible in the manner in which they field destroy each book.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Thank you

all guides are now listed in the wiki please go there. thank you.

Hell, I thought this thing was long since out of print, but I guess I was sadly mistaken, huh? LOL Oh well, good to know, so now I don't have to run back to that store to grab it, since I would have no interest in it otherwise.

If anyone's interested though and close to Northeastern Pennsylvania, it's in the shop called The Video Game Store in downtown Wilkes-Barre on South Main Street next to Gallery Of Sound.

And, the Trading Post(pawn shop up the block) has a copy of MGS: Substance for Xbox, but they want over $20 for it.

Just a couple local finds, in case any CAGs on here are local to me and want to grab some of these before they disappear.

Anyone check bestbuy today? I noticed Tomb Raider Legend guide isn't in the system. I'll be passing by it tomorow and i'll check a bunch of guides

At Best buy I tried dead rising, animal crossing WW, Kingdom hearts 2, Xenosaga III, Need for speed Carbon and another I can't remember, All full price.

Has anyone checked out the Bestbuy in Pasadena California? I'm interested in getting Dragon Warrior VIII strategy guide. thanks. (if I happen to stop by, i'll update everyone one what I find)

I need cash, so I'm posting almost my entire strategy guide collection for sale.

There are some rares and limited editions in there, as well as some RPGs and other goodies.

Anyone who is interested can find the post in the CAG Trading Forum.

Thanks,
Steve

Okay hmm... I still got a question. So if the guides get "pennied" out, do they stay at those prices until they are sold or are they sold at that price on a temporary basis? thanks.

MOST will stay at a penny but I've seen a couple cases where really old guides that were a penny at one time mysteriously reappeared at regular price.

gamestop just pennied out a lot of guides today

thankfully am friends with the manager so managed to get Tales of Legendia, Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, Grandia III, and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth

Sweet, I'll have to dig through the stacks in my local store, because I want every single one of those guides. Are there any more on the list?

Ok, so i SCORED at an EB here. Guy who worked there was really nice, he had already pulled the guides but let me have a go at them. I took one of each(of ones i wanted or thought CAGs would want), so consider the following a penny. Bold ones are ones im definitely keeping for myself.

Onimusha : Dawn of Dreams
Soul Calibur 3 : LE version
Metal Gear 3 : Subsistence

Radiata Stories
Dragon Quest : Rocket Slime
Castlevania : Curse of Darkness
Grandia 3
Tales of Legendia

Xenosaga 2(non-le version finally)
Valkyrie Profile : Lenneth(didn't get it, claimed by EB employee)
Star Ocean 3 (same as above)

Kingdom Hearts : Chain of Memories(older drop i think, was in the back)
Final Fantasy XI Atlas (same as above)
Prince of Persia : Warrior Within (same)
Suikoden Tactics (same)
Suikoden IV(same)

I'm looking for Valkyrie Profile : Lenneth , so if anyone wants to trade for that - let me know

You can add these also for 0.01 from EB/GS:

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
Harvest Moon: Magical Melody
Xmen Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse (Didn't see it on the Wiki under EB/GS - only saw it for TRU and BB)

I'm looking for Onimusha Dawn of Dreams guide, was able to pick up some others from this drop.

I went to 5 diff GS/EB and only 1 hadn't pulled any of the guides. One of the mgrs at the store I went to told me "they're starting to crack down on 0.01 guides so good luck finding any." :|

Idiot new EB manager didn't sell me any penny GUIDEs. He manual the penny guides for full price & wanted charge me $80 for it. Super Bastard .......!!

I'll try to update the wiki with the recent drops. I'm still working on the master lists for each store. I'm only doing lists for EB/GS, BB, and TRU. I might add Target and CC too. Other stores are YMMV, so I probably wont include them. As for the people wanting to print the master lists and take them to their local EB/GS's, that list is currently at about 50 pages (.doc) right now, with more to come ;)

if anyone can pick me up a harvest moon magical melody guide, i'm up for a trade (tradelist posted in guide clearinghouse thread), thanks!

ps. found an extra rocket slime guide if anyone wants to trade..

how u guys know which guides are pennied? u just bring up some random guides and let the cashier ring them up? or did u see a sticker priced as a penny?
Does EBGS usually refuse to sell penny guides?
they aren't supposed to but its YMMV whether they bother to enforce it, I lucked out because mine wouldn't sell so just gave them to me
how u guys know which guides are pennied? u just bring up some random guides and let the cashier ring them up? or did u see a sticker priced as a penny?
mine had a stack behind the counter and I just asked hey are those pennied out guides? then he let me look through them and pick a few out (after I gave him a reserve :p)
Radiata Stories
Suikoden Tactics

I'm looking for Valkyrie Profile : Lenneth , so if anyone wants to trade for that - let me know
I'm gonna go hit the EBs around here tommorow to check but if I can't find a Lenneth guide how much would you want for the Radiata and Suikoden Tactics?
'm still working on the master lists for each store. I'm only doing lists for EB/GS, BB, and TRU.
I've been working on an ABC list of the games with their respective stores. So people would be able to quickly see the guide they are looking for and see which store has pennied them out.

As an example:

Lord of the Rings : Return of the King
1¢ Game Crazy
1.62 Circuit City

Lord of the Rings: Third Age
1¢ Game Crazy, Game Stop

M
Madden 06
1¢ Game Crazy, Game Stop , Toys R Us
Mage Knight Apocalypse
1¢ Best Buy

At first I was including all dates, but it struck me with you list of dated drops that it wouldn't be necessary to do on this list. The drop list is better aimed towards answering, "has anything dropped to a penny recently?" More for the guide collectors and traders.

The ABC list would be for someone like myself who has a game guide in mind and wants to see which store I might find it for a CAG price.

CML for pretty much all the drops from this round (I want them, that is)

I'll head out and check tomorrow, but my hopes are not high, as there seems to be only one store in my area that even has guides on the floor anymore.

Especially looking for Valkyrie Profile, Radiata, Grandia, and Rocket Slime.

Thanks in advance
Sunova...

I was in my local EB earlier and they gave me all their penny pulls. This evening I hit the Avenue EB because I had to go to Barnes & Noble. Anyway, I see a stack of games on their counter including Grandia & Legendia, but also other guides I knew I had gotten at the other store. I ask if those were pennied. "No."

Could you just tell me if this (grandia) is marked down. Kid scans it, looks at me and says to my face, 15.99.

Guess which area manager is getting a call first thing tomorrow?

managed to get these guides

Onimusha : Dawn of Dreams
Dragon Quest : Rocket Slime
Grandia 3
Valkyrie Profile : Lenneth

you can add spy hunter to the list

Ya know, I REALLY should check this thread more often. Then again, after my last haul(none of which has moved out the door yet, cmon people let's trade), I'm starting to feel the crunch for space.

However, I know some of these guides will be high wants for people on here, so keep checking my list, as I'll hit up my usual EB later today to try and grab at LEAST one of each.

Their racks looked barren after my last haul from there, here's to hoping they haven't yanked the guides THIS time yet.
I've been working on an ABC list of the games with their respective stores. So people would be able to quickly see the guide they are looking for and see which store has pennied them out.
Yeah, after I spent an entire day updating the wiki based on the dates they dropped, everyone here said they wanted a store drop list. Its just a major bitch to do, since there's so much consolidating to do. I'm slowly whittling away at the file floormat sent me, separating it into 3 main, separate lists.
I wonder if Valkyrie Profile Silmeria is also pennied?
Yes, but unfortunately I didn't get one. [EDIT - Guess the employee who said she got one was wrong since it scans at full price for everyone else, sorry]

I'm amazed at how fast all the stores did this pull. Anyone who didn't get out on this one right away is probably gonna find there's not much left. I hit up 5 stores and only really scored at 1. The girl working there told me she had already snagged the only copies of VP1 & 2 that they had. She got some of the leftovers from the back that the employees had already picked through. I got a few doubles so I'll update my trade list this weekend sometime.

That's pretty lame. Employees shouldn't be able to pick through them like that. If they want them, buy them any other day w/ the discount while they work there.

Yea funny thing is we aren't really suppose to give them out we are suppose to rip off the covers and throw them away.
Yea funny thing is we aren't really suppose to give them out we are suppose to rip off the covers and throw them away.
I think it all depends on the District / Store Managers. Some of the EB/GS stores in my area are always cool about giving me the penny guides and will even check the back when I ask them if they have any. Others always make up excuses not to even sell me one off the floor if it rings up as a penny. I recently discovered that the "cool" stores all have a different DM than the others.

Thanks for the heads up on RE Archives. I saw a copy of that last night and was kicking myself for not having it scanned. I'll have to go back now. Thanks to the OP as well, managed to snag 10 guides last night.

Stuff I got which I didn't see listed:

Final Fantasy XI Online, Spring 2004 Edition (the guide, not the Atlas)
Damn, now this drop has some good stuff! Lots of RPG guides! Yay!!

I wonder if Valkyrie Profile Silmeria is also pennied?
I thought penny drops were nationwide, but I scanned the following at two different EB/GS and all came up full price even though it sounds like people are snagging them for 0.01.

Grandia 3
DQ: Rocket Slime
Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria
Street Fighter Alpha Anthology

Anyone else encountering this or have any idea why? The clerk even showed me the screen on Grandia 3 and I was watching him so he didn't change the price.

Will trade multiples for most of the RPG guides from this drop. CML please.

Also, why is it that some people seem to be having problems finding these at a penny? Can the store managers be changing the prices in the computers?

Yay, got a DQ Rocket Slime guide on my second try. First GameStop wouldn't give it to me even though I was snagging some used games, but I successfully coaxed the second with a preorder deposit.

Ended up finding a couple DQM guides. A surprisingly nice guy working there started talking to me about the recent markdown and said he and a few others had snagged the Resident Evil archives book for a penny. He then offered his copy to me for a penny if I did a preorder which I thought was really nice of him.

After I did the preorder and received the book from him he came out from the back room with a copy of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth guide which he also let me have. My faith in the chain is was restored after that. :bouncy:

Thank you for the heads up, OP!

I want Tales of Legendia (an employee took the copy that was set aside for me last night and I didn't get there until this morning), Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, and Yakuza guides

I have (all guides) Resident Evil: Archives, Half-Life (xbox), Saint's Row, Perfect Dark Zero, Hitman: Blood Money, Ghost Recon Advance Warfighter, Call of Duty 2, Soul Calibur II Limited Edition (just the guide), etc.

also non-sale wise am looking for the Vice City Stories guide and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops guide

Wow. I scored big today. I hit no less than 7 EBGS stores (2-3 more to go today while I'm at it). My dining room table is stacked about 6 in. high all the way across with penny guides. I even got 36 guides at one single store with lots of dupes. Super-hawt Japanese teenage counter girls (who have never heard of the penny guide thing and were just happy I did some of their work for them) FTW. :applause:

For those wanting guides, I need to sort through what I have and make a list of the spare stuff. At which time I will probably post a dedicated trade thread for myself so my inbox doesn't explode.

Don't PM me, and no cash offers (for now). I'll primarily be looking for other guides if in good enough condition and maybe some old clearance games. Thanks in advance.

Oh, and it isn't a penny, but if you can find a Disgaea 2 guide they are on sale for $9.99 and there also seems to be some kind of 20% off promo going right now as well (so $7.99 total).

Rang up full price at the Garner, NC EB Games.
