My wifes web site - Nice jewelry good prices.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

recent drop section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(recent_drops)

master list section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(master_lists)

they will be filetered from the thread posts to the WIKI page as often as possible. Thank you for your contribution.

Listed in the wiki is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals from the posts of this thread and similar threads. I will update the wikis lists as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. Please dont have a fit if a store wont let you have them just move on. Causing trouble rarely gets guides and most of the time stops others from getting guides in your area. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

What is a Penny Guide:

To answer this question fully, one first has to understand the longstanding legal agreemenat which [book] publishers have with book sellers such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and other chain and Mom & Pop shops, as well as other retailers who similarly sell their books.

For several decades, publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Random House, et cetera will send out X-number of a title to stores to be sold. After a time, when it is decided that those older titles have little chance of selling and the store shelf real-estate would be better used for newer publications, they issue a recall to the vendors to field destroy all remaining copies of titles A, B & C.

The stores then will pull those titles from their inventory to be field-destroyed, and in their systems mark the publications as 1¢. The 1¢ price is to indicate to the publisher that they are no-longer selling the pulled title, and it is also to serve as a Red Flag to any cashier who might ring up a title (on the chance that the titles were not pulled as legally they were required).

When the pull lists are sent out by the publishers, and the stores adjust the price in their inventory (and pull and field-destroy the books), the stores also are to report to the publisher the number of the books they pulled. (This is generally done at a corporate level.) The publisher then credits the stores full cost of the books.

So lets say, MegaChain orders 8000 copies of the Bread Baker strategy guide for their stores in North America for say, $4 a piece. They owe $32,000 to Publisher X. Bread Baker being a big seller and a hard game, then sells 6000 of those 8000 guides, leaving around 2000 guides on the shelves when Publisher X issues the pull demand. Publisher X then issues MegaChain an $8000 credit for the 2000 unsold copies of the guide.

According to IAmTheCheapestGamer, some retailers also have deals where each copy of pulled titles sent to their recognized Recycling Centers are additionally issued further credit for being environmentally responsible in the manner in which they field destroy each book.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.
I generally only get guides for games i have, or ones i expect to get eventually. Black is actually one of those games i thought i might get when it dropped, but probably won't =]
Seconded. As soon as I finish a game the guide goes on the TL. These things eat up way too much space.
Seconded. As soon as I finish a game the guide goes on the TL. These things eat up way too much space.
I've got a closet full of about 80 - 100 guides... every time a drop happens, I just keep whittling the number away.

Like I said earlier, it's ALOT easier than just selling them, because there are always new people to penny guide hunting who missed out on the previous guide drops, and would love to do a trade.

Plus, it saves me time, energy, and effort because I can just straight up avoid Best Buy, EB / GS, and TRU now for the next year, since that's when my stash will probably expire

But yea, I'm totally sick of looking at them.

Question - the Wild Arms Alter Code F guide says it comes with a Penny Arcade comic inside. Maybe I'm stupid or something but I can't find it. Anyone?

There's one on page 55.. looks like there might be a few scattered throughout.

I get guides for RPGs and games that my girlfriend likes. She likes reading the guides.

Other than that, I pass up the pennied guides.
.01 guides aren't supposed to be sold at all. Every time one of us gets them we're getting lucky. You're acting like you're owed something by GS. Trust me, they won't be upset if you refuse to buy .01 guides there anymore. You should be grateful if you get any at all. Just know that .01 guides are a crapshoot, sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't.

BTW, step up the quality of your posts. They read like they belong on gameFAQs.
LOL They belong on Gamefaqs?? Well, at least Gamefaqs doesn't use a 'counter' thats 'powered by Alexa', which is a known piece of SPYWARE. Every time I check my pc for spyware, guess what comes up en masse?

You got it: ALEXA. Of course, it could be due to my frequent checking of threads on this site for new drops and what not.

However, I do think that stores should be FORCED to sell the guides for .01 if they're out on the shelves still. And, like I said in my earlier post, if not for the dipweed DM, my 'prime EB' would still be getting ALL my business.

Admittedly though, most of it WAS for guides anymore, since I steer clear of GS/EB stores like the plague due to their practices of gouging on rare games and offering next to squat for trade values on everything else. And while many of their used games no longer look like they got played concrete frisbee with, I still examine every damned one before buying(even if its a $3 game).

Of course, also at fault are the quick traders, who play a game, beat it and trade it in the next damned day. Some of us like to keep our games for a few months to goof around with for a while after beating it.

I will admit, though, that I don't have a flying kinipshit if they refuse to sell the guides anymore. I know that thanks to the GS chain being so huge anymore, I can simply go another 10-15 miles down the road and try my luck THERE. And usually, if one won't sell them, ANOTHER STORE WILL.
LOL
LOL, Admittedly I ADMIT I always ENJOY reading your STORIES, they ALWAYS entertain ME. On the other hand, ALTHOUGH, in that case, it seems my GUIDES are calling me NOW. DAMN THE MAN.

No doubt dude, they offer squat for your used games, it must part of their obvious corporate motto,"WE RIP OFF OUR CUSTOMERS AND STEAL FROM THEM WHENVER POSSIBLE!" I am spreading the word to all friends, family, and business associates that WE ALL NEED TO BLACKLIST EBGAMES/GAMESSTOP when it comes to buying or selling your video game related items!!!!!!!!!

LOL The only time I liked them was when I traded my one or two PS2s that were malfunctioning to them and they took them and gave me between $60-100 for each at the time for them. One had a dying laser, while the other one scratched discs. It felt good to stick it to them by giving them my screwed up stuff. LOL

Thing is, I bought both PS2s used, so I didn't spend alot for them, so I made out in the end. And, that made me feel EVEN BETTER. Though, I did kind of pity the people they sold them to after I swapped them in.

That's alot of guides. So far, I've only managed to fill one shelf. I'd get alot more, but BB is my only reliable source for penny guides. TRU, EB, and GS never want to give these out. That and the GS close to me got a new manger who actually rips covers off the guides. I don't really feal like dumpster diving for guides that have been damaged like that. I might though for some rpg guides.

Its getting tougher to get the penny guides. The local Tru employee and manager would not sell me 2 guides that I wanted. Came out with every excuse they could (guide damaged, cover has markings and stickers, etc). Has anyone else ever got this excuse why they can't sell you a guide? I said I wanted to buy it, would even pay half the price of the sticker price since it was damaged. Only would sell at full price or just send it back to corporate. So I left everything else I was purchasing (Over $150 worth) and told them to keep it all. First time I was ever denied buying anything. They must have freaked out that they had an item on floor that was only a penny. that manager is gonna last long LOL

ToysRus has become really difficult for most people. I usually don't even bother, as their drops come months after BestBuy and Eb/Gamestop.

Oh, and those looking for guides may want to check the clearing house thread as a few CAGs are throwing away some guides soon, if they don't get any interest. Yes, I know that most of us already have most of these, but check their lists to make sure you don't want any of them.

I got recent EB/GS drop list in hand, And I'm hitting every GS/EB within 50 miles of my house today, will report how the finding go. Wish me luck.

Good Luck Vahn, fyi though is the trick with EB/GS that works is if you get a preorder then they might let you have some guides. Keep us posted bro!!!

I might have more guides than that, believe it or not, I have them spread out over 2 areas of bookshelves, an end table, and have a big ass pile of them with no place to go, I need to go through and whittle away the duplicates and games I probably will never get that I have the guides for... and I JUST got a huge stash of guides the other day about 3 feet high... I plan on taking a huge amount to a game store in Biloxi this weekend, if I can get anywhere between .50 and 1.00 apiece for them cash, I will be pleased... it would at least pay for my gas up there, since i was planning on going there anyway

LOL I love how everyone keeps posting tips for getting guides when it is completely batshit random.

I like to oil myself up, put on some speedos, and give the employee(s) a good 5m posedown in the middle of the store. As for what to say just set the guides down, smile, and make some obscene hand / facial gestures.

Way too funny, rofl!!!!!!!!

As someone who grabbed a shit ton of penny guides in the last two to three years, there *are* a bunch of helpful tips to make your life go alot easier when grabbing these.

It's really not "batshit random", because it's pretty simple to make a cautious cashier sell you the guides... the only time when it's completely hopeless is when it's a hard ass manager or a hard ass employee.
it's pretty simple to make a cautious cashier sell you the guides
I don't think I agree with that (when it comes to EBGS anyways, BB and GC are another story). The only way that's true is when you catch a total newb employee with no manager on duty. And even then they will usually call another store or a DM if they're not sure about the sale. In the case of EBGS I find that most employees know about the policy for pennied items, it's just that some don't care.
However, I do think that stores should be FORCED to sell the guides for .01 if they're out on the shelves still.
So you can get something for nothing? Kinda selfish. Though I'm sure you knew this.

It has nothing to do with EB/GS/BB/GC/or any other bookstore. It's a deal between book publishers/vendors and the resellers. Paperbacks are generally called to be field destroyed, and the vendor then gives the resellers (ie, GS/BB/et cetera) credit for the number of books which did not sell. It's to do with fiscal accounts and running a business profitably, as opposed to losing money.

Reading your posts though, it sounds like you'd favor a store which gives everything away to you, and they then fail and close up shop. So a bunch of people are out of work, you have fewer places to shop, prices go up at other stores because competition has decreased, but YOU'RE happy because you screwed them (and the poor guys who paid their hard-earned money for your non-working ps2s) over with a couple non-working consoles and ya got a few free guides.

I am continually amazed at how people do not understand commerce and capitalism. And saddened by the selfishness of such attitudes.

Posted in the guide thread and updated my TL with my new haul. Got some harder to find ones in there, take a look! Is Roufuss still looking for Untold Legends? I found a few of those.

God I love working at a GS that doesn't care about the stack of guides in the back room :D There were so many leftovers that I couldn't even take everything. Stuff like Battlefront II, GRAW, GTA:SA.. they'll just sit there unless I need more :p

Even still, when I did go to EB / GS, even after they started cracking down, I usually just bargained with them. I would offer to drop two or three preorders at once, and 9 out of 10 employees jumped at this because that makes their numbers look great for the day. I'd usually cancel about a week later, when a different employee was there.

Over time, you'd keep dropping preorders, offer some friendly chat, get to know the employees, and getting the drops were pretty easy. I had 1 EB and 1 GS here, last year, where I could go in during any drop and they would let me take whatever I wanted, as long as I threw down a preorder (and I usually did). I'd get a ton of preorder bonuses for free too.

When in doubt, just offer to throw them some preorder's, most will budge, espicially if their numbers are shitty. If they say no, well, their loss either way because you offered to inflate their numbers. One time I found a ton of penny guides, dropped *five* preorders on one guy, and he pretty much let me take whatever I wanted.

A week later, I moved the $25 onto a purchase I made when different employees were there.

Dude, you are a complete idiot!!!!! He never said anything close to that!! Everyone here wants to keep these guides from being thrown into the garabage, what a waste of money!!! There's always someone out there that wants them so we store and trade them but we all know that and stores don't want to keep these on their shelves because they want to put something else on them. You don't know what you're talking about them getting a credit and such because everyone knows they still get a credit since they did NOT sell for full price, think before you open your mouth next time!!!! Anyone who's worked in retail can tell you this which is why it's always hit or miss whether you get them or not. If all store were following your lame ideas then they would all be out of business because if you go back a year or so you would almost NEVER be denied buying a penny guide!!!

Actually that may be a bit of an exaggeration. I was talking with an EBGS employee and from what I gathered they scan the guides out of inventory (by ringing them up normally) and then just throw them out. If they rip the covers off it is ONLY so the guides can't be resold, no other reason, the covers don't get sent anywhere and any I would assume they get their credit from the publisher no matter what really happens to the books.
it sounds like you'd favor a store which gives everything away to you, and they then fail and close up shop.
I can verify that. This is what we always do at my store. Pull the guides, ring them through so they're out of our inventory, and then toss them.

Now I just collect them when they're pennied instead of letting them be tossed. Everything still works the same. We would just short the drawers at the end of the night the amount of the pennied guide transaction.

I was thinking you were talking about something like dropping preorders, but I've tried that several times and have always gotten negative responses. That doesn't mean I don't still offer to pre a game if I see something good, it just never works for me. That works for me at GC though.

Are you just doing one preorder? You've usually got to drop them en masse, like 3 at a time to get an employee's attention.

I have worked with the corporate end of a large bookstore chain, and I have an uncle in Simon & Schuster. I know what I'm talking about.
Actually that may be a bit of an exaggeration. This is why some of the stores (those who adhere close to GS Corporate Policy) tear the covers off.

Zodemere2k, and anyone else who feels I'm lying or just an uninformed moron, call Prima or BradyGames or any publishing house (those are two publishers which do a lot of field-destroy pulls) and ask. If that's too much of a task, walk in to Barnes & Noble or Borders and ask the manager on duty about their legal obligation regarding Field-Destroying pulled titles. They'll be much more informed about the legal agreements and their responsibilities.

Asking the folks at GS isn't such a great idea as even the DMs and Store Managers aren't terribly informed about their legal agreements with the book publishers. Although Regional Managers and Corporate should be fairly up to date with policy. You could try asking them.

But this is the reason why stores such as TRU had a big crack down (I think it was) early last year and the memo went out re-inforcing the policy of pennied out guides to be destroyed and NOT sold to customers or even taken home by employees.

exactly.....so stfu guinaevere!!!
exactly.....so stfu guinaevere!!!
Aww, you really don't want to turn this into a flame war, do you zodemere?

If you'll read the post I put together exactly one above you, you'll get all the information you need. What DustBoogie is doing is against corporate policy and if his RM was aware that the employees were taking home the guides, his manager and any employees who were taking them would most likely lose their job.

I know that isn't what you want to hear, but it is corporate GS policy.

Seems my district is really lax on these things. They'll probably crack down sooner or later, but for now, I've got more than I need.
Damn, my bf says that every time he'd take them to the counter, they'd scan them and tell him it was coming up full/another price.
So are they lying to him?
Yes. One of the kids at The Avenue EB lied straight to my face a week or so ago about tales of legendia and grandia III. I later complained to his DM whom I know and who doesn't concern herself much with the policy. (I'm also friends with the RM and wanted to complain to her, but I didn't want to kill all the penny guides in the region, and she would have cracked down on all the stores who give/sell the penny guides as soon as I opened my mouth.)

I'd rather the kid be honest and tell me, "I'll get in trouble" or "I'm taking this home for myself" than lie.

Anyone else planning on showing off the size of their e-penis?

Didn't think so. How about we go back on topic? I know it would be a nice surprise.

lmao

On topic: I went by 1 eb and scored a couple guides:

Nintendogs Pups
NSMB
The Movies
Xmen legends 2
Paper mario
Wild Arms Alter Code F
Atelier Iris 2

I'd show off my e-penis except it'd infect the website with e-herpes. Or people would just laugh at it...

Anyhoo, my EBgames pulled the few guides they had and threw them in the dumpster. I'd go dumpster diving but the problem is, I can't seem to find the freaking dumpster! I circled the area like a hawk but I didn't see the tale-tell white bag sticking out of any dumpster...not to mention it's freaking cold outside.

Talking about e-penis and the cold weather, Jimmy Johns ain't afraid to show it off if you look at their logo "A full eight inches even when it's cold outside!"

Way too funny when you have people attaching and accusing people of wanting stores to give everything for free and go out of business and for people to lose their jobs....yeh right....derrrr

I don't believe these guides have been mentioned yet:

EB/GS $.01

Metroid Prime Hunters
Legend of Zelda: 4 Swords (GC, Player's Choice version)
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (Wii)

Yes, it appears the first guide for a Wii game has been pennied.

I also FINALLY got a Tales of Legendia artbook for free after searching for many months :D
Way too funny when you have people attaching and accusing people of wanting stores to give everything for free and go out of business and for people to lose their jobs....yeh right....derrrr
Shrike, please put a ban on this fool.
I don't believe these guides have been mentioned yet:

EB/GS $.01

Metroid Prime Hunters
Legend of Zelda: 4 Swords (GC, Player's Choice version)
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (Wii)

Zelda and MP:H have been pennied for quite some time.. but that's news on the Tony Hawk guide. Can we get confirmation from someone?

Well then I'd have to find an employee either smart enough to realize it would inflate their numbers or stupid enough not to think I might return / exchange the preorders.

I may just be dealing with super hardasses when it comes to pennied guides. Maybe they think they EBGS / Brady Fairy is going to check their dumpster in the dead of the night.

I'll keep your multiple preorders suggestion in mind, but won't be too surprised when it works but they offer me something craptacular like 3 pres for 1 guide.
Are you just doing one preorder? You've usually got to drop them en masse, like 3 at a time to get an employee's attention.
sorry if this is a little off-topic, but i found one nintendogs guide and noticed it mentioned the dalmation breed was included, but i remember before there was a different nintendogs pups guide that didn't mention the dalmations...

for those who have seen this old guide and the new one, are these two pups guides different?

Confirmed on downhill jam. When I picked up the others penny guides the guy handed me a copy. I didn't even notice it was a wii title until now.

LOL I should try that, though I think I'd get arrested by the rent a cops(mall security) that patrol the local mall where I just found out the GS store DIDN'T pull ALL the pennied guides.

I found a Flight Simulator X guide in there, figured I'd try my luck, but it was the same girl who had never heard of penny guides till I brought up one or two the one day a couple months ago.

And, in typical newbie fashion, she called another GS store where they're total hardasses about NOT selling pennied stuff and that became HER stance. I love clerks who can't think for themselves, nice little puppets they are.

Anyway, I guess my local GS stores really ARE a wasteland now, even to the casual gamer with NO advance knowledge of which guides have dropped. So much for the days of customer service and 'the customer is always right'.

Oh and to whoever said about stores giving away their money by giving out these things, lemme just say that with all the money they ass rape stupid people out of for their games they probably paid $1-5 to the original owner to get to resell, they aren't losing much if someone grabs a couple guides. And, I still feel that if they didn't pull them, they're for sale at whatever price they ring up and if it's .01, then that's what it should be sold for.

Besides which, the local stores have been getting very dilligent about yanking guides, so it's not like I can find 40 of them in stock and 'break' this conglomerate of evil. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Gamestop SUCKS!!!

To be honest I wish EBGS did what CC does with guides (marks them way, way down to a fair price, but not all the way to a penny or $0.00).
