My wifes web site - Nice jewelry good prices.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

recent drop section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(recent_drops)

master list section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(master_lists)

they will be filetered from the thread posts to the WIKI page as often as possible. Thank you for your contribution.

Listed in the wiki is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals from the posts of this thread and similar threads. I will update the wikis lists as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. Please dont have a fit if a store wont let you have them just move on. Causing trouble rarely gets guides and most of the time stops others from getting guides in your area. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

What is a Penny Guide:

To answer this question fully, one first has to understand the longstanding legal agreemenat which [book] publishers have with book sellers such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and other chain and Mom & Pop shops, as well as other retailers who similarly sell their books.

For several decades, publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Random House, et cetera will send out X-number of a title to stores to be sold. After a time, when it is decided that those older titles have little chance of selling and the store shelf real-estate would be better used for newer publications, they issue a recall to the vendors to field destroy all remaining copies of titles A, B & C.

The stores then will pull those titles from their inventory to be field-destroyed, and in their systems mark the publications as 1¢. The 1¢ price is to indicate to the publisher that they are no-longer selling the pulled title, and it is also to serve as a Red Flag to any cashier who might ring up a title (on the chance that the titles were not pulled as legally they were required).

When the pull lists are sent out by the publishers, and the stores adjust the price in their inventory (and pull and field-destroy the books), the stores also are to report to the publisher the number of the books they pulled. (This is generally done at a corporate level.) The publisher then credits the stores full cost of the books.

So lets say, MegaChain orders 8000 copies of the Bread Baker strategy guide for their stores in North America for say, $4 a piece. They owe $32,000 to Publisher X. Bread Baker being a big seller and a hard game, then sells 6000 of those 8000 guides, leaving around 2000 guides on the shelves when Publisher X issues the pull demand. Publisher X then issues MegaChain an $8000 credit for the 2000 unsold copies of the guide.

According to IAmTheCheapestGamer, some retailers also have deals where each copy of pulled titles sent to their recognized Recycling Centers are additionally issued further credit for being environmentally responsible in the manner in which they field destroy each book.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.
New EB/GS drop list updated based on recent posts. Sounds like all the titles listed are good.

Post if something is wrong and I'll remove it.

Floormat and 6669, I leave to your discretion for addition to the wiki.
Ok, thanks again. I probably wont update the wiki till tmrw, unless floormat does it. I had to edit the BB drops twice yesterday, so it might be easier just to wait till then.

these are up for trade...although i'm not looking for any guides in return. i'm mostly looking for games.
Went to a couple EB/GS stores today, looking for guides, but didn't find much. I *did* hear a couple of employees mention an e-mail being sent around about someone in the area hitting stores and buying up lots of guides. Is EB/GS starting to target guide hunters? Any employees out there have any more info on this?

FWIW, this was in the Baltimore area.
LOL For once in a long long time, I can say without a doubt that I am NOT the subject of that email, though I was at one time a huge guide hoarder. And actually, if you ask me, I think they ARE going after guide hunters and have people who are hunters pegged, since I rarely get guides at the GS stores locally anymore without sending in a friend to get the guides FOR me.

Then again, I think I only ever go to GS brand stores anymore when there's a drop or back when Kmart had lots of great trade fodder games for me to flip to GS during their phenomenal trade 3/get $10 extra credit deal.

Ahhhhh, so many Kmarts ended up sans their Clancy Triple Packs thanks to me and thus GS stores in the area ended up incredibly overstocked.

Otherwise, I personally think the chain(Gamestop) as a whole sucks ass with their ridiculous trade prices and gouged prices on harder to find games.

But hey, that's just my opinion....oh wait...no it isn't!!!

Out of the new drops I would really want Atelier Iris 2, Wild Arm AC F and Wild Arm 4 but as usual I won't get any since the EB/GS here are the ass of all asses

Argh. I just ordered Test Drive Unlimited guide from buy.com last night. At least I got it for $3 and change. Guess I'll go head out tomorrow to Gamestop and see if I can get another one while I wait for the one I just ordered...and try to find that Atelier Iris 2 guide.
Hmmmmm, I was able to get the Best Buy locator links to work, here's what I did:
- I clicked on the "select preferred store availability" link
- That link goes to the "session has expired" page, so I then clicked on the underlined "here" link
- Then I went back two pages back to the Google cached page, clicked on the "preferred store availability" link again and it took me to the store finder page!
And for anyone that wants to know how to find cashed links though google

I used google to search for them. Here's an example which is good to save as a favorite to use as an example for the syntex of how to search for something on a particular website.

http://www.google.com/search?q="halo+official"+guide+site:gamestop.com

In this case the page is (or should be gone) from the site since the guide would be discontinued so you have to click on the "cashed" link. The only thing that makes this difficult is that some of the guides don't seem to be sold online (The Guide for Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin for example) but it's helpful for guides they did sell online and to also give you an idea of if a particular store didn't pull guides (or did a sloppy job pulling them)

I'm having the same problem :( I was having about 50/50 luck with it working last night and having this same problem. I completely forgot about it tonight as I was doing this up, I guess it would be best just to let Ron Simmons comment on this one for me - Damn!

I think I'll just edit it out for now and bring them back if I can figure out something to get around that.

Unfortunately, most of the guides are OOS around my zip code 94070, except for GTA: VCS.

Well, I had some fun dumpster diving. I got 3 sealed Pokemon XDs! If anyone wants them... I got an Atelier Iris 2 but it's slightly water damaged sadly. Wild Arms Alter Code F has the cover ripped off but it's nice and clean so I can tape it, I don't care that much. Snagged a Resistance Fall of Man and Soul Calibur 3/Tekken poster too. Gonna hit the other store and Best Buy tonight, damn having class until 8:30.

I was lucky to find a few recent guides including the following:

Atelier Iris 2: Azoth of Destiny
Blade Dancer
Drakengard 2
Everquest II Atlas
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
Just Cause
Star Wars Episode III:ROTS
Stronghold Legends PC

when i found a gamecube player at ebgames. i asked him about guides and he printed out a list of pennied guides that were at the store he let me have the guides that were on the list for free. if i found any since i was buying the gamecube player

here is the pics of the list. i was to lazy to type them out

Wait... he let you have the GAMES for free???

SHIT!!! And I just cleaned out an out of the way EB out of most of their pennied RPG guides too. I totally missed a couple Perfect Dark Zeros, since I figured they wouldn't let me have them. But, the guy let me dig through their guide BIN(yes, they actually had all their guides in a massive bin like they use for used games) and I probably walked away with around 30-40 guides for FREE.

I put in a reserve for $5 on God Of War 2 at another out of the way EB earlier today and the guy let me grab 10 guides(one of which was NOT even pennied, but actually $4.99) You know what that guide was?

DEVIL SUMMONER!!!!! It is now coming up @ $4.99 in the system, so any CAGs who want to grab one, but don't think they'll be able to snag a copy when it pennies, here's your chance for a cheap ass guide deal.

I'll be updating my trade lists SOON, MANY guides from this drop(but still no friggin DMC 3 or SC 3 LE dammit).

Devil Summoner guide for $5?! I really really wish I didn't pay full price for the guide and game at launch (largely 'cuz even though it's great, I've barely played it).
I wish that was an option for me. The closest one to me is in Indy.
Actually you may be able to find that some used book stores may buy these guides. A clerk at an EBgames told me about a bookstore that sold used guides, so my thinking is that they may buy them as well, who knows, worth a try I guess.
Devil Summoner guide for $5?! I really really wish I didn't pay full price for the guide and game at launch (largely 'cuz even though it's great, I've barely played it).
That's awesome... I'll definitely swing by EB and get that for $4.99 tomorrow.
I picked up another FF7: DoC and a NBA Live 07, which was actually marked as a penny. I noticed a few Oblivion guides, but they didn't match the SKU or ISBN numbers listed in the wiki. So, are the only ones that were pennied the ones without the new barcode stuck on the back?
I picked up 2 Oblivion guides today and noticed they had stickers over the original UPC codes. They matched the UPC codes you guys listed and they indeed rang up for $.01. I also noticed they didn't have that black bar across the top indicating that it had the new update info (probably the XB360 addons? is my guess) . It seems you have to look for one's without the black bar on the top of the guide cover and look for the sticker over the UPC on the back. Good luck!

I scored all the Guides today at BB, Still missing FFXII CD artbook but it OK. I look forward hitting EB/GS tomorrow.

It's bad day today cos is snowing outside & kinda touch to get around :(

i meant to say guides. fixed error only grabbed a few that was on the list. will probably go back there. some of guides on the list wasnt on the floor

I almost hate to send everyone out again to stores they've already been to but it looks like there was a drop on Nintendo guides today at EB/GS. I picked up:

New Super Mario Bros
Nintendogs "Pups guide"
Paper Mario TTYD (Players Choice)

Might be others but those were the only ones I found. Nintendogs and Paper Mario are actually on the list that boyboy just scanned in a couple hours ago. Along with the Superman wall sticker, a PS2 skin and a couple PS2 "Ultimate COdes" disks (they're disks right?)

How much are they going for now?

This is at EB/GS, right?
edit. They're still full price on the website.

I was at ebgames today looking for rygar ps2. I saw like 3 employees ripping off the front cover 100+ .01 cent guides and placing them in a box. I asked them can i get valkyrie profile, they said no! haha so gay

Hmmm... well the list posted earlier confirms all but the New SMB guide which I learned about at one store but the manager had already taken the only copy. I went to another store and found 1. The employee there saw it was .01 and let me buy it then immediately started calling other stores looking for a copy for himself.

Sweet, I'll have to give them a try then.

Damn - I thought I was going to be the first one to post about Paper Mario and NSMB :( I hit 2 goldmines today - the 2 EBs I went to were extremely cool about getting me penny guides and in fact one guy told me to come back with a list because he wanted them out of the back room before they did inventory! I have extras of basically everything that was just pennied out (only the good stuff I took) but I honestly don't know what I would trade them for. I'll post in the guide trade thread eventually. Oh, here's a weird one for you that they had at this one EB - the first Summoner guide! It was actually out on the shelf right in front of the register and in flawless mint condition. And it was obviously a penny :)

Semi offtopic, but speaking of Devil summoner - i went looking for the guide online to see if local store had stock and it looks like the price of the game went up to $49.99...considering i bought it at EB for 29.99 a lil while ago, thats kinda odd.

Unfortunately, most of the guides are OOS around my zip code 94070, except for GTA: VCS.
Thanks so much but i ended up finally getting shot down at BB, it's a first. I checked all the links and two guides showed up at only one location in my area. So i drive all the way there and search high and low on the shelves and they're nowhere to found. So i ask a employee if they can help, he walked off mumbling something and never returned. So many minutes later i ask another dude, who can't help me but gets a supervisor type girl to help. She looks on website, not there, so i she looks thru inventory list and finds it 2 copies in stock on one of the guides. She goes to the back to ask some "media manager" where it might be cuz it's not on the floor, then then returns and says that because is discountinued they can no longer sell it. LAME!!!

I noticed that too... I wasn't quite sure where to post it. That is odd though, isn't it? The used price is still $26.99 too.

Will the new New Super Mario Bros guide be dropping to $0.01 at BB anytime soon? I saw two at BB I have had good luck buying penny guides at BB I think I will be able to get it there I really want the guide for it. For me EB GS is hopeless.

Crap, guess I gotta make a trip to EB to take a shot at Paper Mario in particular, might as well see about NSMB while I'm there. Unfortunately the manager and other employee I'm cool with don't seem to work as often as the new ASM and another guy.
