For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

recent drop section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(recent_drops)

master list section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(master_lists)

they will be filetered from the thread posts to the WIKI page as often as possible. Thank you for your contribution.

Listed in the wiki is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals from the posts of this thread and similar threads. I will update the wikis lists as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. Please dont have a fit if a store wont let you have them just move on. Causing trouble rarely gets guides and most of the time stops others from getting guides in your area. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

What is a Penny Guide:

To answer this question fully, one first has to understand the longstanding legal agreemenat which [book] publishers have with book sellers such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and other chain and Mom & Pop shops, as well as other retailers who similarly sell their books.

For several decades, publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Random House, et cetera will send out X-number of a title to stores to be sold. After a time, when it is decided that those older titles have little chance of selling and the store shelf real-estate would be better used for newer publications, they issue a recall to the vendors to field destroy all remaining copies of titles A, B & C.

The stores then will pull those titles from their inventory to be field-destroyed, and in their systems mark the publications as 1¢. The 1¢ price is to indicate to the publisher that they are no-longer selling the pulled title, and it is also to serve as a Red Flag to any cashier who might ring up a title (on the chance that the titles were not pulled as legally they were required).

When the pull lists are sent out by the publishers, and the stores adjust the price in their inventory (and pull and field-destroy the books), the stores also are to report to the publisher the number of the books they pulled. (This is generally done at a corporate level.) The publisher then credits the stores full cost of the books.

So lets say, MegaChain orders 8000 copies of the Bread Baker strategy guide for their stores in North America for say, $4 a piece. They owe $32,000 to Publisher X. Bread Baker being a big seller and a hard game, then sells 6000 of those 8000 guides, leaving around 2000 guides on the shelves when Publisher X issues the pull demand. Publisher X then issues MegaChain an $8000 credit for the 2000 unsold copies of the guide.

According to IAmTheCheapestGamer, some retailers also have deals where each copy of pulled titles sent to their recognized Recycling Centers are additionally issued further credit for being environmentally responsible in the manner in which they field destroy each book.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.
put a piece of cardboard on either side to assure the guides won't get bent
Just an FYI, you can always take a marker and write "Do Not Bend" on the envelope, and they have to abide by that. Which means the delivery person will have to leave the envelope at your door or some equilivant, as they aren't allowed to bend/roll the guide into your mailbox.

I do that TOO, besides putting the guides between two pieces of cardboard. AND, the bulk bundles I've been sending out recently, I've been wrapping in static wrap to assure they won't slide around in the priority mail flat rate boxes I ship them in. AND, when I send out in those boxes from the postal service, I have them add pieces of tape to either end, to assure the box doesn't pop open en route.

I've had a few CAGs who said the outside of the mailers I sent looked like the carrier had dropped them on the ground and they landed in mud or something, but the guides INSIDE were still in great shape.

Now, on the other hand, I've been sent back guides in oversized mailers before with NO padding, NO mention of 'DO NOT BEND' on the outside of the mailer and just very sloppily packed. Then, on top of that, they complained to me when I sent back the guide(s) I was shipping THEM because I didn't mention that there was a crease on the back cover or residue leftover from where I removed the price sticker.

I know from first hand experience what Goo Gone can do to a guides cover if you rub it the wrong way or for too long, so that's why if I try removing the stickers and I feel alot of residue under the sticker, I will simply put it back in place. Although, I will say that many guides seem sticky when I have found them in the first place.

Every postman I've ever had on either side of the country has ignored do not bend. Do not assume that they won't if you write it on there, they generally don't care.

Baby oil works great for removing sticker residue. Put a very small amount on a tissue then rub the residue off. I don't recommend applying the oil directly to the guide just to be safe.

Hmm, but how many CAGs want to reveal that they keep a bottle of baby oil around? ;)

No shame in that game. Dry spanking = not cool.

WD40 also works well. Agree on not applying directly to the guide.

De-Solv-it is also a good product. All natural. =)

Strange that those aren't in the Wiki yet... American Wasteland has been dropped for months, and Untold was part of the last big drop. Scarface appears to be new, though, unless nobody caught it last time around.
Has anyone else tried Scarface at GS/EB B&M yet? I'm not convinced it's pennied since it's still $16.99 on the website.
I got mine at a GS B&M for $.01 on Saturday. See post above.

Picked up a couple of Superman Returns guide at a far away BB yesterday. I was surprised to see them on the shelf this late. I guess nobody wanted them and the store didn't even bother with them while they were pulling the rest

The same store had all 3 Superman Returns busts. $0.99 each. I promptly picked up all 3 designs.
Has anyone else tried Scarface at GS/EB B&M yet? I'm not convinced it's pennied since it's still $16.99 on the website.
I just got back from a GS, and it rang up regular price. It's weird, it didn't seem like he did a price adjustment behind my back, as he didn't do any unusual typing after scanning it. It's as if it rang up $16.99, like normal. So, maybe this is a YMMV, depending on your EB/GS?? Weird...

That's the thing though, penny guide drops are usually universal, unlike the clearance games at stores, but there are times when something is maybe stickered wrong.

I wonder though, did the poster who said Scarface was .01 end up getting it because they MISSED scanning that guide and just gave it to them with the rest?

I've heard of that happening before. Also, here's the list of guides to look out for @ BB this coming month if they DO drop anything:

F.E.A.R.(PS3, 360): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=3CWQ3GEFKME3TKC4D3IVAFY?skuId=8160624&type=product&productCategoryId=cat02171&id=1161734368276

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas(PS3, 360, PSP): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8132834&type=product&productCategoryId=cat02171&id=1158321661257

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent(GC,PS2,Xbox,360,PS3?): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8033497&type=product&productCategoryId=cat02171&id=1157068283347

I included the page links so CAGs can keep track of them till they possibly drop. These are the only three marked @ the usual $9.99 pricepoint that the guides get BEFORE dropping to .01, though there's also a Gameshark Greatest Hits 2005 marked $9.99, so someone may want to monitor that one too.

Just figured I'd try and make a post that actually gives some decent info, though we never seem to know 100% what will and won't drop.

Oh and here's one more link, maybe someone will add it to the first page for easy access to the guides page from BB's site, if it isn't on the first page already:

Yes, that is completely possible.

The guys were very fun about the whole thing - they were having a good time with me. In fact, I helped them pull the guides they needed to pull, and got to pick any or as many as I wanted as I did it.

Now, it is very possible that they messed up on the Scarface guide. However, I can say for sure that I only paid a penny for it.

Naturally, I assumed that it rang up correctly. I will see if I can find the receipt to confirm.

Went to Game Crazy today :)

Zelda: Wind Waker $3.99
Shining Force NEO $0.00 (still one left in the Greeley store I was at a few days ago!)
Shining Tears $0.00
Suikoden IV $0.00

LOL I tried that approach, being helpful and helping the clerks yank the guides which were pennied at my local(and usually gold mine) EB. But, it was not to be, as they still only were able to give me one copy of KOTOR II's DVD version guide and one copy of Just Cause's guide, both without cover.

Thing is, I think that's the ONLY time those stores ever saw me, was when they pennied guides. Well, that and when they had that trade 3/ get $10 extra deal for a month on trades. Other than that, I would usually traipse in the next day or a couple days later and still be able to find assloads of the guides and be allowed to grab handfuls of them if I wanted to.

Times they are changing for me though....

I think you may have gotten lucky on Scarface. I checked the GS near me and it rang up for full price. I had it scanned with a few known penny guides and it was the only one that didn't ring up for a penny.

so went to my local eb today and was HOPING that the FFX and FFX-2 guides would be pennied out...but for some reason they're not...tho it says on the master list that they are?! if someone can pick up EITHER of these guides for me...that would be amazing! i would pay too!!!!!!! and i also would like to ask why FFX and FFX-2 are on the list if they're not pennied out?!

Thanks for the list. That will come in handy when they drop to a penny in the future. Good work!
so how do i acquire game guides via other means besides TRU or EB..like from people here...i mean i SEE the trade list and all but it's all so unorganized and im not sure to find what i want...
Most of us have trade lists in our sigs/under our avatars. Just click them and see if there is anything you are interested in. Most of us both sell and trade them, and aren't really looking to make a profit, so the prices are very reasonable.

Also, there's the giant guide trading clearinghouse, but not everyone with a tradelist has their stuff posted there (though they should!):

and welcome to CAG Penny Guides.

You see that little grey colored 'button' that has the initials CML on it under peoples avatars on here? It's off to the right of a number that's a deep yellowish color(which is their feedback number). Click on that for any persons profile or posts that has it and that will take you to their trade list.

Admittedly, some of them take you off of CAG and onto either Gametz or another trade site, but most of them take you to the page dedicated for 'CAG VIDEO GAME TRADING', which is also available in that scroll down menu you see at the top or bottom of your page you're on on CAG.

Hope this helps you to get started buying or trading on CAG.

Also, concerning the guides @ BB, I listed the ones currently @ $9.99 only, because those have the best shot at dropping, versus listing all of them.

But, it is good to have an archive readily available for a quick click through once any of those drop.

Good job, nonetheless..

No problem. I hope we can still access them after they "officially drop". Has anyone else noticed that some guides, especially Dead Rising don't seem to be correct for your particular store. I know of at least 3 stores that have that guide but bb.com would make you believe they are not available at those 3 stores. Weird?

In my experience, the website will still always show "unavailable" if there is only 1 in inventory.

Anyone know when the next .01 drop is at BB? I was there on Sunday and was surprised to see a few restocked guides like Dirge, Xenosaga III and Godfather (360)...I picked that one up.

Usually, the drops will occur on the first Monday of a month, Number83. Although, they did do a middle of the month drop this month I think. So, keep your eyes on the guides listed @ $9.99 on Best Buy's site as of now, as those have the best likelyhood of dropping next month.

Two of the main guides I remember from that list are: Rainbow Six Vegas and F.E.A.R.

Also, did anyone else notice that the Morrowind guide went back up to full price($19.99) versus a couple months ago when it was $9.99.

I think that is going to be the guide we're going to be waiting forever to drop, just like people keep joking about Mark Of Kri being $21.00 and not clearancing @ Kmart.

I had a great haul tonight at my Gamestop:

2x Paper Mario
Valkyrie Profile Lenneth
MGS3 Subsistence
6x Rocket Slime
Altelier Iris 2

I own all these games except Altelier, so I'll be keeping most of them.

The employee gave me the usual "We're not supposed to sell them when they hit 'that price'" speech, (i think he said 'that price' rather euphemistically so that the other customers in earshot didn't suddenly go nuts) but the manager approved it :) (I've never had a problem at this location.) I was also buying $100 of used games, but I don't think that really changed anything.

It is not a middle of the month , but the last week in January.

SOMEONE DELETED MY LAST POST WITH THIS DROP INFO!!!!

A week from this coming Monday, so 2 Mondays from now, you will most likely see your next guide drop. The fiscal year/month ends that Sunday before, so like ritual, the following Monday should be our anticipated guide drop. I'm working both Sundays so I will be sure to let all know if I find out early. Thanks, and please don't delete this one.

Thanks Vahn. I always look forward to your posts.

In case anyone manages to find one, Animal Crossing for the DS was pennied out over a week ago at EB/GS.

I managed to find one today after going to 5 diff EB/GS. It's up for trade on on my TL.

Tried a ton of other guides, this was only one that came up pennied. The clerk then said to me, "Looks like we missed pulling this one last week".

Confirmed. Only found 1 copy at 3 stores though.

ok, i don't think this has been covered but i have a question.

Does gamerush/blockbuster do the penny guide thing as well? i have a few nearby and they don't really have the greatest selection but it would still be nice to know......

That's pretty much a no. I don't recall anyone ever reporting getting .01 guides at a GR/BB.

If they DID do the penny guide thing, I know of at least 2-3 Blockbuster stores in this area with guides that are super old(last gen, PS2, Xbox, etc) that are sitting there collecting dust hidden behind newer stuff. And believe me, I had them PC some of those old guides one night about 6 months ago. ALL full price.

Also, if anyone can find them, these are the only two I recall seeing or grabbing from any FYE(includes Sam Goody, Coconuts, Wherehouse, FYE, a few more chains I think) chain store for .01:

GTA Double Pack(PS2 version, as I've seen and PC'd the Xbox version at a local store, still full price)(from another penny guide thread list from CAG)
Psi-Ops(grabbed this one personally, bought a pack of gum n they let me grab it for .01)

They DO but not in a way that benefits CAG's. Basically BB corporate sends out a memo that says field destroy these. The computer system is set up so that it waits until EVERY single store removes them from inventory. Once there are 0 in inventory across the entire country, then the computer pennies out the item. So unless you find a store that somehow managed to remove them from inventory but then put them back on the shelf, you will not find a penny guide. And even if you knew what was supposed to be field destroyed, it wouldn't matter since scanning it would just show full price  .

Has anyone compiled any lists frm FYE? I seen some really old guides there too. Not too many around me but one by my work. Any info other than these 2 guides?

The GTA Double Pack one I only read about in the older penny thread, but when it comes to finding it listed in the Wiki, I don't think it's listed there.

And actually, FYE is more AR about the guides than GS, as just getting that Psi-Ops guide for the price of a pack of gum was like pulling teeth.

The way I found the .01 Psi-Ops guide was to have a bunch of older guides PC'd, but just like with the guides @ GS/EB/BB/TRU, it's best to just bring up ones you think will be pennied, as asking for a PC opens the door to let them refuse the sale.

What surprises me though, is that while we have people giving info for most of the major stores, FYE and WalMart seem to be absent from most of the deal threads.

I'd like to think that Wally World and FYE(and the other chains under their corporate control) have nationally run deals that're more frequent than the occasional price drop on some newer games.

Is there anyone on CAG who can provide us with some info on these deals though, I wonder.....
