My wifes web site - Nice jewelry good prices.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

recent drop section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(recent_drops)

master list section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(master_lists)

they will be filetered from the thread posts to the WIKI page as often as possible. Thank you for your contribution.

Listed in the wiki is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals from the posts of this thread and similar threads. I will update the wikis lists as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. Please dont have a fit if a store wont let you have them just move on. Causing trouble rarely gets guides and most of the time stops others from getting guides in your area. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

What is a Penny Guide:

To answer this question fully, one first has to understand the longstanding legal agreemenat which [book] publishers have with book sellers such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and other chain and Mom & Pop shops, as well as other retailers who similarly sell their books.

For several decades, publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Random House, et cetera will send out X-number of a title to stores to be sold. After a time, when it is decided that those older titles have little chance of selling and the store shelf real-estate would be better used for newer publications, they issue a recall to the vendors to field destroy all remaining copies of titles A, B & C.

The stores then will pull those titles from their inventory to be field-destroyed, and in their systems mark the publications as 1¢. The 1¢ price is to indicate to the publisher that they are no-longer selling the pulled title, and it is also to serve as a Red Flag to any cashier who might ring up a title (on the chance that the titles were not pulled as legally they were required).

When the pull lists are sent out by the publishers, and the stores adjust the price in their inventory (and pull and field-destroy the books), the stores also are to report to the publisher the number of the books they pulled. (This is generally done at a corporate level.) The publisher then credits the stores full cost of the books.

So lets say, MegaChain orders 8000 copies of the Bread Baker strategy guide for their stores in North America for say, $4 a piece. They owe $32,000 to Publisher X. Bread Baker being a big seller and a hard game, then sells 6000 of those 8000 guides, leaving around 2000 guides on the shelves when Publisher X issues the pull demand. Publisher X then issues MegaChain an $8000 credit for the 2000 unsold copies of the guide.

According to IAmTheCheapestGamer, some retailers also have deals where each copy of pulled titles sent to their recognized Recycling Centers are additionally issued further credit for being environmentally responsible in the manner in which they field destroy each book.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

ARGH! i had a stash of a few of the guides put away from Saturday to get today... when i walk in to check my stash, it was gone! DAM! I only had one copy of a few of the guides, mainly wanted KH2 and Bully... Dam whoever was cunning enough to find my stash!

Well, I hit three BB total and it sucked..the first one I went to which is by where I work is usually very reliable, but not today. Not a single guide even though I went an hour after they opened. I went to another Best Buy by my parent's house and that one was cleaned out even though just yesterday they had most of the guides on sale. I finally scored one, one guide, Oblivion  at the Best Buy by my house....but I also wanted Yoshi's Island DS and Bully

I can't believe I am saying this, but what are my chances of finding these in likr a cardboard box in the dumpster behind the store. I figure if I could get a hold of all the guides, a dumpster dive might be worth it...

Sadly, big stores like BB usually have compactors and you don't mess with those. You might have better luck at a smaller game store if you ever want to dive for guides. Sadly, the one I was diving got a new manager who actually takes the time to destroy the guides.

Wow, I thought it was just the Richmond area that was drying up for penny guides. I had been able to get pretty much anything I've wanted from Best Buy for the past year or so. A little while ago, the Midlothian BB still had a ton of guides from 2 or 3 drops prior. I've never been able to get anything from EB/GS, and TRU has been hit or miss. But Best Buy...they always came through.

Until the last couple of drops, that is. The cursed nationwide crackdown struck close to home.

The morning after a drop, the BB game department is a wasteland. Emptiness occupies the shelves formerly holding guides. Not just the penny ones - all guides are pulled. Not only does BB withhold the goods, they take away any hope of finding that rare penny guide (missed by the heartless rogues) hiding behind the WoW art books. It's like Best Buy killed you and then urinated on your freshly-dug grave.

But there is a hope...

(That's how my manuscript, "Revenge of the Killer B&M" begins. Soon to be optioned by Paramount, and coming to a theater near you.)

Anyhoo, after striking out at the Glen Allen and Short Pump BB's and the Parham TRU, I struck mini-gold at the Midlo TRU:

Pokemon XD [x2]
Final Fantasy IV Advance [x2]
New Super Mario Bros. [Last one]
Tomb Raider Legend [Last one]
NCAA Football 07
NBA Live 07

They still a few FFIV and Pokemon XD guides (~4 each), and plenty of Ghost Recon AW guides. Nothing else, though. As she's ringing me up, the cashier talks about how complicated Animal Crossing DS is and how it's perfect for a strategy guide. Then, as she hands me the bag: "Is Animal Crossing on your list?" I nod mournfully. "Shoot! we don't have any!" Shoot indeed.

The Midlo BB was a bust, so I went south to Colonial Heights. This TRU was also behind in their pulling duties:

FFIV Advance
Nintendogs Pups [x2]
DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 2 [Last one]
Mario & Luigi: PIT [Last one]
Halo 2 [Last one, from the last drop!]
Need for Speed Most Wanted [Last one]
Perfect Dark Zero
Ghost Recon AW

They had plenty of Pups and GRAW guides, and probably all of the sports drops (I didn't pay attention to those). They also had a couple Gran Turismo 4 guides. I thought they dropped last time, but I already had two or three at home, so I left them.

I work at the Colonial Heights Wal-Mart, and I was already running 15 minutes late, so I considered skipping the last Best Buy. After all, after three strikeouts, what could I possibly find but additional disappointment? But that voice in the back of my head, the voice that told me waking up early and driving to every BB and TRU in the Richmond Tri-Cities area was a good idea, had other intentions. "You know, Best Buy has to be accurate 100% of the time to keep people from buying penny guides," it said. "You only have be lucky once."

Screw Wally World. I have a destiny to fulfill.

A quick stroll through the game department yields nothing. I have only one other place to look - the PC guide section. The other BB's only had WoW guides, so I wasn't expecting a miracle. Quoth Locke to Ecko as the hatch station is imploding, "I was wrong."

There before me was a four foot section with guides stacked ten deep in places. I was a kid in a candy shop:

FEAR [Last one]
Call of Duty 3 [x2, ~5 left]
SOCOM Combined Assault [x2, ~5 left]
Saints Row [x2. ~5 left]
Guitar Hero II [Last one]
Red Steel [x2, Last one]
The Sims 2: Pets [x2, ~3 left]
Final Fantasy V Advance
Pokemon Ranger [x2, ~4 left]
Yoshi's Island DS [x2, ~5 left]
Bully [x2, ~5 left]
Resistance: Fall of Man [Last one]
Dead Rising [Last one]

And then, hiding at the bottom of the deepest stack: Kingdom Hearts II. Stuffed behind the fixture, almost out of sight: another KHII.

I get an employee to scan the two Oblivions (one stickered, the other sticker-free). Both ring up full price (just how many versions of this guide are there?). He looks at the rest of my guides, then says, "I can tell you which ones are a penny." Before I can tell him I already know about the other guides, he picks them up one by one and puts them on the counter. "This one, this one, this one..." He pauses at the Kingdom Hearts II guide. "I think this is still full price." He sets it aside and moves through the stack until he hits the other KHII. "I'll go ahead and scan it." He's surprised when it scans as .01.

He puts both in the pile and moves on until he hits the Dead Rising. "Aw man," he says, "I was hoping to get this one!" For future penny guide karma, I let him have Dead Rising. As I walk away, he says,"Um, how many Kingdom Hearts guides do you have?" I sigh and hand one over. I better get Double Rewards Zone Karma Points for this one...

So ended the most epic penny guide adventure of my short life. And so ends one long-ass post.

You're making a lot of people jealous Ozzy.

As for me... well... I guess at this point all I've got up for trade is a Kingdom Hearts 2 and a Metroid Prime Hunters.

Only hitting up stores in the tri-CITY area? LOL I used to nail alot of stores in the TRI-STATE area(NY,NJ,PA) with probably my best finds EVER being @ the Best Buy in Middletown, NY. Hell, there were SO many guides there, I had to come back the next day with a friend(who drove me in their car) to clean them out the rest of the way.

Second best haul I ever had was Springfield, PA(near Philly/King Of Prussia) which I hit on the way to Atlantic City one time.

BOTH stores have been pretty dry for guides lately though, not that I've been to BOTH in a long while(since I know a CAG who regularly hits the Middletown store).

Great haul, btw, and would you be willing to part with your hard found Tomb Raider Legend guide by any chance? LOL

I hit 2 BB's and 1 TRU. Nada. However, BB went through a phase before of suddenly pulling guides, but it wasn't too long before they started forgetting to do it again. I'm still holding out hope :).

Too bad they picked the best drop ever (imo) to start the pulling!

I went back to this store after 8pm that I was at for opening today. It appeared as though the employees got around to cleaning everything up, as there were no penny guides left at all and everything was very tidy.

Well, next time I'm going to stash stuff at a few stores and probably just hoard everything at one location next time, basically because it appears that BBs are getting very good at removing the penny guides so I figure I'm not hoarding from a CAG, I'm hoarding from the store employees :p

[quote name='guinaevere']For the first time in a while, my BB had zilch. A few Pokemon Ranger guides but those rang up at 16.99.

Aren't u the one who started a flaming Iamthecheapestgamer for admitting to hoarding at one time or another? I guess it's called Karma....

[quote name='guinaevere']Nope, you've got me confused with some other gorgeous CAG.[/quote] We're in a online forum for video game players who are too poor / cheap to pay retail price for their gaming supplies. I have a feeling you're one of the few.

2 stores-70 guides, hope this adds a tally to the positive side.

You know what makes me the most sad.....is thinking about the guides that were field destroyed, thrown into the garbage, wasted.......when there's people like us who want these guides for personal use!!!!

p.s. nice score Vahn and thanks for all help around here!

The SE store had a bunch of the Yoshi's Island DS pocket guides on the bottom shelf.

I was honestly not expecting everyone to have so much trouble finding guides this time around. I'm tempted to go back to the Colonial Heights BB and pick up a few more of the "desirable" guides (YI DS, Bully, etc.). That is, if they haven't been pulled yet...

Got one Call of Duty 3. They had at least one of each guide at my store the night before. Pretty sure they pulled them all. I found the one guide in the PC guide section shoved behind a bunch of other guides.

Not sure who the bastard is (I'd use a less friendly term, but I don't want the post being deleted), but thanks for clearing out the Mission Valley BB (San Diego) and keeping those of us who actually want some of these guides from getting any. The least you could do is trade them on here, not try and sell them on Craigslist. Little bastard!

Sorry, but your thinking is myopic and flawed.

If people knew they could just wait for guides to get clearanced out for $.01, that could be bad for the guide companies. In fact, "field destruction" of outdated paperbacks and magazines is common practice for bookstores.

No, actually I believe he is simply stating that it's disappointing to see such valuable products getting destroyed, for whatever the reason the company chose.

Besides, early adopters and people who need the guide right away will buy the guides at full price. It's just like any product in the world. When a product gets released, the people who want it the most and have the money will buy it at full price at release. Everyone else will say "I'll buy it when it takes a big price drop". This situation is no different.

For example, on the last Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper and Jak games, I knew that about a year after release, it would go GH for $19.99 like the previous games in the series. So, I waited patiently for about a year and picked them up for half-price each because I KNEW they would drop. Is that "bad" for the game companies?

If the guide publishers either made a product with more compelling features, or made it cheaper in the first place, then this wouldn't be as much of an issue.

I went to my local BB yesterday, found only a couple of Pokemon Ranger, but they ring up full price! What the?! Are there more than one version of this guide??

Anyway, my hope of finding Bully and FFV is gone, if any of you have extra of those for trade, please CML, thanks!

Glad to see so many of you still able to find penny guides... it's a wonderful experience indeed.

[/quote]If it was valuable, then you would have paid more than a penny for it.

Yes. Agree or disagree, that is pretty much the reason that Nintendo doesn't drop prices of first-party games. But that is neither here nor there. /thread derailment

[quote name='botticus']If it was valuable, then you would have paid more than a penny for it.[/quote]

Not necessarily. How many of us would pay $17 for a strategy guide? Especially since this drop had at least 5 guides I wanted. That would be ~$100. The products are valuable to me. I just wasn't willing to spend $17.
I also want a Ferrari. I don't have $100,000. The Ferrari is still valuable, however.

I wonder what the profit margin is on a new userguide. Frankly $20 on top of a $60 current gen game does not seem like an impulse buy. Especially with all the resources on the web (and the quality of some of the printed guides out there)

$9.99 would be a better impulse purchase for me while cruising the aisles.

Not sure if it has been posted.... but I just saw DoubleJump's official guide to Devil Summoner for $5 at GS. Very nice guide.

Could our friends on the East Coast who are early risers please give him an early-morning wake up call to inquire about these guides? Thank you. :)

off topic.

Anyone know about the guide for ninety nine nights for xbox 360?

I can't find it in a wiki. I read from some where that it was pennied some time ago. But it's not on the master list.

I gave you a 2 day warning with the best buy drop, wasn't that good enough?

Im confused as Hell. I searched the master list and 20 pages back..which are new? Are these 9.99 or 1 cent?

Bully
Call of Duty 3
Dead Rising
Elder Scross IV: Oblivion
F.E.A.R.
Final Fantasy V
Guitar Hero 2
Kingdom Hearts II
Pokemon Ranger
Red Steel
Resistence
Saints Row
Sims 2: Pets
Socom: Combined Assault
Yoshi's Island (both types)

Is that the latest Batch, I think Ive seen these.

The "warning" was fantastic. I love hunting for penny guides and all the insider info is helpful. I think the bad luck for a great many people is just too many people hunting for guides.

Yep, those are the new penny guides, but good luck finding those now.

[quote name='Prepster']Heh np and I probably should have said it which store it was, the one in downers grove. Which 4 did you hit up and were unable to find any?[/quote]

I hit:

HIP
North Riverside
Elston/Armitage
North/Sheffield
Touhy

None had Dead Rising, and only Touhy had the recent drops.

To add my story to the mix,
I knew I wouldn't be able to hit up BB until today (Tuesday), so I ended up stashing myself a FEAR, COD 3, and Saints Row. When I got into Best Buy today the guide section was pretty much empty. They cleared EVERYTHING out (this store had plenty of old guides from previous drops). Fortunately my hidden guides hadn't been discovered so I was able to pick those up. The weird thing is that they had about 10 Red Steel guides, each of them marked at .01. Seems odd they would remove all the others yet keep that one and mark it at .01. Big thanks to Vahn for giving us the early drops, and my sympathies to those who have lost loved ones in this tragic guide genocide.

Well, I went back to the scene of the crime to see if I could pick up some more YI DS, SOCOM, CoD3, etc. Unsurprisingly, there were big holes where the stacks of guides used to be.

There were a ton of Gears of War, Animal Crossing, and New Super Mario Bros. guides, though. I think I know which BB I'll go and stash guides at the end of the month. (Please penny guide karma, I gave you Dead Rising, please let me have some AC:WW action!)*

*Note: I have no inside information. I'm not suggesting these three guides will be in next month's drop.

[quote name='vahn401']I gave you a 2 day warning with the best buy drop, wasn't that good enough?[/quote]

I'm pretty sure he was referring to calling the guy listing all of the guides on Craigslist in San Diego.
