First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

I was at best buy yesterday and they had tons of blue dragon, moh airboren, madden 08, kate and lynch, stranglehold. When I went today all of them were gone. I asked where did they all go and the guys working said that they are all boxed and ready to be shipped back. :( But they did miss the following:

I was going to head out to check this morning and when I saw everything still on the site at regular price, I figured it would be pointless. Thanks to the person who wasn't deterred like I was! I appreciate it!

Forgot to mention that I checked Assassin's Creed, Bioshock and Call of Duty 4 and all were regular price. I know that seems obvious, but then again, the pennied guides from today are still regular price on the website too.

Three BB's, including two of them that I know were overflowing with those guides last week. :wall:

All three, none anywhere to be found. Store locater says they're all in-stock at one BB, though they're nowhere to be found.

Haha, I just got home with 45 guides.... my BB had nearly all except Heavenly Sword. The guy checking me out was smiling the whole time (it seemed like he liked seeing all this stuff ring up so cheap) and asked how I knew these were so cheap.

Seriously, though, don't mention CAG next time. Shrike isn't just being funny, he knows what he's talking about. If you have to say SOMETHING, make it up or say you heard from a friend who works at a different Best Buy, or something. It's far better for us if CAG stays under the radar.

I'll try and keep my mouth shut, I just thought it was funny because the kid was enjoying ringing me up so much.
 
oh was my day eventful at BB...

I'm usually there on a drop day no later than 1 in the afternoon - I left at 3:30 today. When I got there I saw something I had never seen before: all the guides were ordered, alphabatized, and all the penny guides were gone. I found this odd, as they no I usually clean them out. So, I went to the person who price checks the guides for me, who told me she "saw someone with a crate of them earlier in the day". I thought I was beaten to the punch then. I asked her if there was someone I should ask regarding them, she said there was, gave me his name, and told me where to find him. Following her advice I ask the gentlemen if there was a guide drop today and where they went. He said they were all moved to the back and offered to go get them for me, to which I happily said yes. He came back two minutes later with an entire rack. He said I was welcome to all of them, and even got me a box to put them all in and a cart to put them in. After loading up I went to a register and the cashier asked me if I was grabbing all of them, because he wanted a need for speed pro guide - I told him to help himself to it and any others he wanted before the sale began, but he just took that one. I spent a total of 82 cents not counting the one I gave him. after foinishing up I go outside with the cart, to see its raining out pretty hard. To add to it, the box couldn't handle the weight and broke inside the cart. I figure I better get another box so I checked at a few neigboring stores while using pieces of the now ripped box to shiled the guides from the rain. All the stores had already broken up their boxes, but on the bright side the eb I hit up gave me a free god of war psp demo, so I gave him a manhunt 2 guide to say thank you. I actually went back to best buy afterwards and proceded to put everything in a total of 10 plastic bags - two other BB employees chatted with me as I filled the bags, one of him was the guy who marked down the guides and moved them to the back, and at the getgo said this to me:
"So thats's what happens to our guides. I'm just glad they're finding a use for them" The other one actually helped me bag the guides, so I offered him any guides he wanted, and he just took a Madden 08 guide (I offered the third guy too but he declined). After filling the bags up I headed over to the bus stop, took the bus home, and here I am (for the record, 10 plastic bafgs filled with guides is a bitch on the fingers). I'll post what I got today, including the ones I gave away, in my next post.

I bought multiple copies, but I did make sure to leave one of every guide. I felt bad leaving huge gaps in their walls, and also there were several kids watching me, so I didn't want to take one that they wanted to buy. I pretty much only took 3 of each, no matter how many they had though.
 
That is a great haul today Visc.

Of course the BB I went too was completly out of everything but Conan and Compass (both of which I don't have so don't want/need) the bad part was they had like 4 copies of Ratchet, 2 copies of Manhunt 2, and like 5 of Folklore (all of which I was looking for) on Sunday night when I bought Spiderman: FoF

Awsome penny guide story enjoy it while it lasts :D The way you started it out I was thinking it was going to end up being about how your gold mine store ended up pulling the guides then told you something along the lines of sorry we can't sell you penny guides anymore.

I had one lady get pissed I wasn't paying full price at the one I went to, and halfway through scanning she pissed and moaned to the floor manager about it. He saw me doing it and knew about the penny guides, but he didn't care. He told her that the penny guides are nothing new and that it was legit since no one took the time to pull them.

In the future, just say "on the Internet" or something else generic. Don't mention CAG by name, as we've had enough issues with the CC/Speedy1961 mess. Not that I can see any issues coming from penny guides and CAG, though the less attention paid to something like CAG at a retail store, the better.

I went to teh Palisades Mall in NY and the only guide I found that I wanted was Ratchet and Clank for teh PS3. Im looking for Warhawk and Heavenly Sword with no luck
 
Hit two BBs on the way home, one had cleared nothing, the other most of it (not the PC section...they never check the PC section). Left some at each location. I'll check the tradelist.
 
Crappity crap crap . . . I checked this thread before I left work (done early on Mon) and there was no info. Now I look and I've likely missed the mother of all drops

Actually, I use the Timmy Turner(from Fairly Oddparents) method of explaining where I get my info on guide drops from. I simply say 'Internet' when asked where I found out they're pennied from.

Oh and, as usual, my one local BB was a total bust today. It looks like they shrunk the guide section down to two wide shelves(where they have the guides spine out) and two levels of the Gamestop variety, like the ones in front of the registers.

And, what's this I hear about ANOTHER version of the Oblivion guide pennying? I know the old plain tan cover one did A LONG time ago. I'm going to go through and update the list with any guides I may have missed putting in the second post before and attempt to alphabetize them.

EDIT: I updated the second post with the list of current and semi current drop lists. It's now alphabetized. Good luck, my fellow CAGs. And please, please, please PLEASE:pray: keep the trade post banter to a minimum. Thanks.

They were all pulled from my store. The one I really wanted was Metroid Prime 3. I was able to find a Final Fantasy II, though...(hint, hint)

I know but that doesn't change the fact that I found one. It being an old one helps me since most people won't be able to find it at this point (assuming they want it) and makes it a little more desirable.

So where's your tradelist?[/quote]I've got three MP3 guides and don't even anticipate getting a Wii anytime soon. Your first in line if you want one, helpful local CAG that you are.

I stopped at a BB today and they actually had a box of penny guides and a sign ".01 Guides" and a list. Should snipped a pic, but buying guides is really new to me. Picked up several for me and trade and could get more. I think everything I got is listed here already. I'll post later when I have more time. This was the BB on Pleasant Hill by I-85, ATLers.
 
can someone provide a photo of the new oblivion guide that dropped? I want to see which one since there are so many
