Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Eight(MODS: Please lock, Thread Nine is up)

Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.
I think I am missing something here. I went to my local BB and they had tons of guides, but they all were for reg price. How do I get one cents guides ?
You need the secret password.

I usually clean my BB out of guides, but I'm fairly certain there are 0 CAGs in my area. Besides, I usually wait until the weekend after the drop (although I might head out tomorrow) so if no one has gotten to them by then, I take 'em all.

Not sure if anyone cares, but the following are pennied as well:

Secret Codes 2007, Volume 2 guide by BradyGames
Codes & Cheats by Prima

I also grabbed:

Golden Compass x 2
Thrillville x 2
Madden 08 x 2
Conan
Manhunt 2
MySims
Spiderman FOF
Stranglehold
Naruto
Kane & Lynch
Heavanly Sword x 2
Metroid Prime x 2
Blue Dragon
Lair
Ratchet & Clank
Warhawk

I'm really only interested in keeping 1 each of the last 5 on my list. I'll probably entertain some requests from CAGs to spread the wealth.

Watch out, people will accuse you of hoarding

I kid, I kid

Good luck!
Was able to score some of the recent drops at a Best Buy near me. Went to the east part of town and that Best Buy, which is always behind on pulling, actually had not one penny guide. I decided to truck it up to the north side BB figuring if any BB is caked full of lazy employees and ones that dont care this would be the one. So im gathering around 8 guides all different. I gathered 2 Super Paper Mario which were the same pennied guide from several months back and as the cashier is ringing them up, the SPM is ringing up $14.99. I told her immediately I didn't want it. She said wow this is a good sale, immediately calls a supervisor to ask if SPM was included in the 1 cent sale. He said no by her reaction and he also questioned her ringing them up and told her they weren't supposed to sell them.

He comes up and said he's not supposed to sell them but he doesnt care as we both agreed it cost BB more $$ in man hours to return these to the back (probably back on shelf again, LOL) then it would be to let me pay and walk out with them. He said it wasn't his call so he calls the on duty store manager and it's one that I have had problems with in the past as well with these guides but at a different location. She immediately grabs the guides, instructs another employee to go get the rest of them and she tells me that she's not going to be unethical and sell these to me? I advised her that they were on the shelf and so therefor she must sell them to me. She refused and said that 1 cent means to send them back. I told her that these are probably the highest profit items in their store and that there is NO WAY she is sending these anywhere as it's not cost effective. Well i guess i must know more about retail management then her as she storms away in front of customers and says "your still not getting these"

She left the area with her penny guides. She was very unprofessional and left her cashiers embarrassed as they told me they were sorry. Let's just say im glad I bought NOTHING from that store and that i had 2 children with me that required a cart that i left all the way out to the deepest part of their parking lot!

One way I know you can score these probably every time is to buy a Monster cable of some sort as if they refuse to sell the guides then, then just dont buy the monster cable. Im sure they will fold everytime as you can always return the monster cable.
First off, there were TWO versions of the SPM guide, one is pennied and one is not I believe. As far as the guides go, you should almost always use the line 'I heard you may be clearancing some game guides' to kind of help offset the shock of the items coming up .01.

Of course, any diligent cashier will ask a manager if that price is right or not and most managers will concede that they screwed up and missed some guides that weren't supposed to be on the shelf in the first place. Some of them may limit you to ONE of each guide or so, but ONE is better than NONE if you ask me.

Acting all superior and quoting that the guides are the 'highest profit' item in the store(which I doubt they are) just gets you pegged as an asshole customer and if you think they'll miss your bit of business because you swear to never shop there again, guess again. They will bid you adieu and ask the next sucker....errrr...consumer to step forward.

Believe me, I've dealt with the managers who won't sell actual price error items or items that ring up WAY lower than the sticker price(like the Circuit City in Middletown, NY did with an Xbox game one time with me). You just say 'fine whatever', then you go home and write a well written diatribe to the corporate office without swearing or calling anyone names. Hell, I got $20 in credit to use @ Best Buy last year when they had the $10 off Prima guides sale and guides were ringing up .00 in the system just from being nice and explaining what happened and how I was treated.

Oh and a final point, you didn't fuck up the managers day by putting your cart back in the deepest, farthest part of the lot, you screwed up the day of the poor lower tier shmoe who has to go out and collect them before going home at the end of the night.

I was shut out at three of the six Richmond BB's yesterday, so I decided to hit up the other three this afternoon after work. Come to find out, I only had to go to one. At the Midlothian store, I got:

Heavenly Sword x4
Blue Dragon (I keeping it)
Conan x3
Project Gotham Racing 4 x3
Folklore x3
Stranglehold x3
Warhawk x3
Final Fantasy x3
Medal of Honor Airborne x3
Manhunt 2 x2
Lair x2
Kane & Lynch x3
Ratchet & Clank x3
Metroid Prime 3 (I keeping it)

I didn't bother with Thrillville, Golden Compass, and a few of the other less desirable guides. There were plenty more of just about everything save Ratchet & Clank, MP3, and Blue Dragon (and there might have been more of those behind all those Halo 3 guides). I was so excited that I forgot to check for Oblivion (and my arms hurt so much from the stack I was carrying, I probably couldn't have carried any more anyway).

Protip: Be sure to check the PC games section for guides. I found the Blue Dragon, PGR4, and Heavenly Sword guides there.

I stopped by the 360 store today, but didn't see anything. Whoops. I guess I should have gone in the Midlo store considering I live a mile away. I usually get shut out there, so I don't bother...
It is safe to say that none of them will collect dust... and I think the most of one guide I got was 6. That was because they had 14 of them (Thrillville).

I gave my mom 4 to take to the school she works at to see if any of the teachers kids had the game. I kept two. I'm done defending myself, call me a hoarder I don't care.

Just thought I would share my experience.
Some of those kids have leprosy, you see, and the ink from the Thrillville guide covers acts as a healing salve, so he was doing it for the children.

Come on, you bought the stuff because you wanted it, no excuses needed. But if you crow about buying that many mutliples, people get will get annoyed with you.

Once a guide is pennied, that SKU is always pennied. Though a store may put a new UPC sticker over the old one, and that will be a new full price SKU.

Hey guys, I'm kinda new, but this is a pretty neat idea. I worked at TRU for a while (9 months?) and odd and ends fell to pennies or dollars; I wish I had known about forums like these back then.

I'll hit up my local Best Buy (Tyler, TX anyone?) and see what I can get. :D

Be on the lookout for the Turok Pre-Order bundles also pennied out at BB. They are the ones with the Demo disc (360) and beanie knit hat. I scanned one of these for shi*s and giggles and it was also pennied out so I picked up the last 2. :bouncy:

I just love the way GameCrazy CSRs scan the penny guides and then proceed to turn over the guide and tell me the retail price is the acutal cost. Then he/she starts punching on the keyboard to alter the price...retail price that is. Happens to me all the time...at least 4 different GameCrazys.

What are the 6 Richmond area Best Buys? Theres only one Best Buy I go to which usually has nothing. Now that I know theres another shark in the water and a hoarder at that I'm going to have to be extra vigilant to get there early.

Now now everyone, let's keep the flaming to a minimum and the trade posts where they belong. Oh and second post is updated with the Turok Pre-order demo/beanie.

If you live in/around a major city, you're going to have this problem (whether or not they advertise themselves on CAG). I've already realized this and know which stores I need to get to and by what time in order to beat the other person(s). I've even purposely alerted the staff at one particular that they need to pull the guides after I've gotten mine just to keep a specific hoarder from getting their stuff. Was an oh so sweet revenge to see them walk out empty handed an hour later  Sure it was a dick move, but I haven't had a problem with the person since.

Of course, that doesn't work when someone isn't listing which stores they're hitting. As for me, I have hit stores all over at one time or another, mostly when I was out those ways for a day trip or whatever. I've gone as far as Connecticut(just over the NY/CT line), NY state(as far up as Syracuse in one area and Ithaca in the other direction), out to Paramus/Parsippany in NJ at times and I've even hit Harrisburg and Philly area stores at times in PA.

So yeah, I have definitely gone way outside 'my area' before for a deal or three, but only usually when I was already going to be going that way in the first place.

Have I lately? I've thought about it, since the one CAG has told me that one of my former 'haul' stores in NY state has stopped being vigilant and pulling guides and/or they(the CAG) stopped grabbing EVERY guide from there.

Picked up 41 guides today. I'd say I only got about half, maybe more, of what they had, but they're so damn heavy and I didn't want to hold up the line too much. I got at least one of everything except Golden Compass, Lair, and Madden 2008. I purposefully passed on Madden and Golden Compass (which they had like 10 of), and must've accidentally forgot Lair.

The only semi-desirable "guide" I was able to find at any of the Raleigh area stores was the RE Calendar. There were a few copies of Golden Compass and Madden at one location, but nothing else.
At my Best Buy I only got a couple Thrillville, Conan, Madden, and Sims Castaway guides. How often are guides at Best Buy pennied?
The last BB drop was November I believe, but they're usually more frequent. This was an unusual drought.

To be sure, the black Oblivion GOTY guide is *NOT* pennied, right? I grabbed those, since they included Knights of the Nine and had stickers over the UPCs, but then I saw the normal tan-ish BG that specifically stated "expanded" and had a sticker over the UPC and put the black GOTy ones back. Were they both pennied, or just the tan non-GOTY one?

1. Midlothian
2. Short Pump
3. Glen Allen
4. Hull
5. Mechanicsville
6. Colonial Heights

The trick is finding the particular Best Buys that don't pull guides - it's usually two, but hardly ever the same two between drops.

As always went to BB a day late and they don't have anything. Went to BB on Sunday and they had tons of guides for Heavenly Sword, Lair, Blue dragon, etc. Finally had time to go today and they didn't have anything left except for tons of the Golden Compass. Sucks when I know the hoarders got to it first. They had 7 copies of each for crying out loud. SUCKS!!!!

With or without a sticker over the UPC? With a sticker it was a penny for me. It says Now For PS3 on it.

Did you try to black GOTY one?

Well I was happy until you said #6 haha. Oh well, they really never have anything and the other 5 are too far to justify the gas money to go hunting for stuff I don't really need. Sucks I bought Blue Dragon literally a week ago with Lost Odyssey and its pennied out but nowhere near me.

Didn't try the black one, but I CAN confirm the tan expanded (w/ Nights of Nine) with the sticker over UPC is a penny. Picked up that and Blue Dragon (only penny guides in my store, but luckily the only ones I really wanted)

I think GS had some guides drop and we didn't know. I can no longer find online any versions of the Tomb Raider Anniversary guides, Blue Dragon, Need for Speed Prostreet, or Metroid Prime 3.

i've been drinkin so alls i've got to say is.....cock blocker!

I was lucky enough to go to a BB further down from my house today and was able to pick up:

Blue Dragon x2
Ninja Gaiden Sigma x2
Spiderman: FoF
Manhunt 2 x2
Rachet and Clank
Stranglehold x2
Metroid Prime Corruption
Kane and Lynch: Dead Men

The best part was that there was a bunch more of each but I didn't want to be selfish/hoarder and left one of each at the BB.

I think that is a bit wasteful... Dante puts Hoarders and Wasters in the same circle of Hell

You know, I really respect that. I do the same. I only take what I know I need. People will use the defense "they're just going to throw them out anyway!", but when you take way more than you need, you're just going to wind up throwing them out too, so why not leave some for the next person?
Better that than getting 75 guides and throwing out most of them one day...

I am sure they will be picked up. While I was there getting my pile of guides there was someone picking up some Madden Guides so I am sure they won't go to waste at all

I've gotten rid of around 20 so far. Gotten rid of = sold/given away....So I'm down to 55 actually.

Maybe you should stop speculating about the future usage of guides that I BOUGHT. I have the right to do whatever the hell I want with my guides, I paid for them. If someone standing next to me had asked for half of them, I would have gladly parted with them. The fact of the matter is, no one else wanted them. Hell, another BB 18 miles from my house has every guide still sitting out. Obviously there are no CAGs in this area.

Not to mention this is a capitalist economy, so I am just doing what is in my best economic interest. Tired of getting preached at in this thread.

Someone needs to take their Midol. If you really don't care about what people think about what you do, then why throw a temper tantrum on the message board about it? They have opinions just as you have yours, and we live in a free-speech country where they have the right to say whatever the fuck they want to say, whether you like it or not.

Quitting with the snarky remarks, like in your post #325 above and at least twice that I remember seeing in the past few days that I let slide, will alleviate your "getting preached at". Seriously, chill with the victim mentality you seem to have. Several disagree with your methods of guide getting. Get over it.

You think that they should make a Lifetime movie on you, or something.

Oh man I thought I went to GameFaqs by mistake.

Anyways I got a copy of the guides I wanted and a few that I figured I could trade. I won't go into numbers but no more then 1-2 extras.

I think this was a pretty good drop, especially if I can score a Blue Dragon from Target on the cheap.

If anyone has an extra Blue Dragon they don't want/need, please PM me. I was able to snag most everything on the BB list except that one, and of course that's the one I need. Also, I'd be willing to pay cash for it, too, if you don't want to trade. Thanks!

Who is disagreeing with you? Seems like you're the one trying to to start a fight. I smell a faint whiff of troll...
So much of this belongs in the RPGG Discussion thread...lol, so much for that idea, eh, IATCG?
Yeah. I pretty much figure that people will do what they want to, plus I whored out my own TL in a post or three already, so I'm just as guilty.

Either way, if this newest guide thread needs to be redone in 3-6 months again because it's coming apart at the seams due to a ton of superfluous posts, I'll be happy to make another one since I've snagged my unfair share at one point or another too.

I just know that had I actually volunteered for a Forum Guide/Mod spot when a few came available, I would probably be chopping posts left and right like a madman. :whistle2:# Then again, I guess I get powermad when I am given even a lil power.

I have picture that I took with my phone of the receipt on which I bought the Turok Presell with Demo and Beanie if someone wants to post it for verification.

Well I've struck out getting Blue Dragon & Folklore guides. I think BLue Dragon was a priority guide pull this time around as I was able to get most of the drop at 1 store & when I inquired about BD guide the guy said they were gone. They had a ton of them previously too. Why would they pull BD & not the rest??

I was wondering the same thing, although not specifically with BD. But of the few stores I went to all had only K&L, NFS: PS, & Stranglehold with the others pulled. I wonder if they weren't on the list to pull.
